I don't disagree, but the machines are there... in the

  Not
to beat a point into the ground or wave MS's flag, but that's why win9.x
is a HOME OS, while NT and W2K are business OS's. There is no and has never
has been any illusion of security involved with the Win9.x OS and that

While they may not be the highest in security, there are
things that can be done.  I know that if you use the Windows update,
there are security updates for both OSes.  Also, there are updates for
IE that are security updates as well.  You should also probably disable
the file & print sharing for WinXX as well.

hi,

we will be deploying Win2K from scratch on the user's machines (around
700) replacing NT 4. SO I was reviewing our machine naming convention.

Our Offices are located in two cities, one single domain.
So far we would use something like "CityName-Department-User Real Name"
(where city name and department are abbrevations) to name workstations.

Usually the NT Names are the users Company ID, which is unique.

I was wondering how you guys/girls are naming your workstations and users.

I pulled this from their Code Red Docs:
The following Cisco products are vulnerable because they run affected
versions of Microsoft IIS:

Cisco CallManager
Cisco Unity Server
Cisco uOne
Cisco ICS7750
Cisco Building Broadband Service Manager
IP/VC 3540 Application Server

They have an advisory list that you may want to look into. I don't have the
info here, but I will look for it -just remind me offline ;)

There should be an urgency! This isn't 1985, it's 2001, and the world

run or execute and destroy not only your network, but cause complications on
others is a responsibility YOU have. Don't let users have dangerous access to
anything that comes over the internet. Scrub your files at the gateway!

That sounds quite off.  Did you notice my post regarding
the difference between the two systems (Carnivore & Echelon) this

traffic to and from.  Also, do you really think that they are dumb enough

Anti-Attack Feds Push Carnivore    By Declan McCullagh ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
  2:00 a.m. Sep. 12, 2001 PDT    WASHINGTON -- Federal
police are reportedly increasing Internet    surveillance
after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon.    Just hours after three airplanes
smashed into the buildings in what    some U.S. legislators
have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents    began to
visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers,
according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition
  of    anonymity.    An administrator
at one major network service provider said that FBI
agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple
of    Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in
our core, along    with offers to actually pay for circuits
and costs."    The person declined to say for
publication what the provider's response was,"but a lot of people" at
other firms were quietly going along with the FBI'srequest. "I know that
they are getting a lot of 'OKs' because they made it apoint to mention
that they would only be covering our core for a few days, while their 'main
boxes were being set up at the Tier 1 carriers' -- scary,"the engineer
  said.     [...]    Microsoft's
Hotmail service has also been the target of increased
federal attention, according to an engineer who works
there.    "Hotmail officials have been receiving calls
from the San Francisco    FBI office since mid-(Tuesday)
morning and are cooperating with their    expedited
requests for information about a few specific accounts,"
the    person said. "Most of the account names start with

  Arabic."

Well, Carnivore is for "known" addresses -it doesn't just
snoop all communications.  Echelon, which has been in place for quite a
while, originally for phone conversations, is the one that will listen for
certain words, and flag them.  Whether or not they are using Echelon (which
is constantly said to "not exist", the British Parliment just had a vote on
whether or not to keep denying its existance) in conjunction with Carnivore, I
do not know.

Re: How to restart Notes Service ?

2001-09-10 Thread Kelly Borndale

There are several processes that you would have to kill within taskmanager
in order to be able to restart the client and or server. Unfortunately (or
fortunately, depends on your view of Notes) I don't have a server here in
from of me, but if you want to contact me offline tomorrow when I am back in
the office, I can let you know which they are. Check out Notes.Net, too.
And watch out for virus scanning software.

Are you sure you have all the Notes processes stopped? Try sorting by name,
and make sure that there are not any client processes running on the server.

DESCRIPTION | ** Win32.Apost.A@mm is an Internet Worm that works on
Windows systems. It spreads through e-mails as an attached file and is
activated when the user executes the attachment. When is executed,
the virus copies itself in the root of every drive (including floppy-disk)
under the name readme.exe. Also, it copies itself in the Windows directory
and sets the following registry key to be executed at every startup:
  HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\macrosoft
"%windir%\readme.exe" After this, it uses MAPI (Mailing

have a machine behind reception which is used for DB Queries and everyone
always leaves it loged in. Ive decided to make it hard for them by having the
workstation lock if they dont use it for 5 minutes. That way the next person
to use it will have to track down the previous user to unlock it. Im sure the
annoyance will fix it REALLY quick!!!
Any ideas how i could achieve this, i dont want a
screensaver password i want the workstation locked.

Thanks to all
who replied.  We are reviewing this topic since users are allowed to
send and receive personal mail as well as Official mail due to our remote
location.  While it may have no legal standpoint at this time, it does
make the point to those who receive it that the disclaimer is drawing their
attention to something they should be aware of.  I realize no one likes
them, I was just looking for some examples since I have seen quite a few at
the bottom of emails sent to this list.  Thanks

Re: ID Monitoring??

2001-08-22 Thread Kelly Borndale

Why not just change the password to what he thinks he it
is?  Is he able to login at all?  Are you able to see where the bad
logins are coming from?  Could he have possibly installed a service on the
win2k machine using a different password?

  Subject: ID Monitoring??
I have a user who is constantly getting locked out of his
account.  Heclaims that he isn't typing in a bad password 3 times
(the lockout number)but that it just suddenly happens.  What is the
best way to monitor his IDto determine what and when the bad password
attempts are happening?  Inchecking through the event logs on the
BDC's I don't see anything, or elseI'm not recognizing it for what it
is.I am in an NT4 domain.  We have multiple BDC's.  The user
is having thisproblem when they log on locally to the network and also
  when RASing in.They have 2 machines, a W2K and a Win98 machine that they
  use.Any help is appreciated.Marchttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

I need
to do a search on files and search for specific text inside the
file. I know Windows search will do this, but then I want to be able
to save to a text file so I can ream some people. What simple,
free tool can do that?

Neck and back problems.  You may want to visit your
dentist.  You are really straining your jaw, and that affects other
muscles.  S/He may be able to help you with exercises to stop grinding, and
a bite plate for night time use.
