[nysbirds-l] Water challenged Willow Flycatchers

2012-06-03 Thread Glenn Quinn
I'm used to seeing (or hearing) Willow Flycatchers in the general vicinity of
salt marshes. This weekend, my son had soccer games in Levittown and Dix Hills.
Both locations are far removed from any salt marsh habitat or any water at all
for that matter, but both locations seemed to have some kind of recharge basin
with singing Willow Flycatchers.

Levittown location:
40.716017, -73.525575

Dix Hills Location:
40.788844,-73.390474

The Levittiown field appears as MacLaren Stadium on Google maps (they'be got
some nerve calling this hole in the ground a stadium).

The Dix Hills field appear as Half Hollow Park on Google maps (it's also called
HBC Soccer Park).

Anyway, I thought some people might be interested and was wondering how many
recharge basins on Long Island might have this bird as a breeder.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kite Spot Dragonfly

2012-06-03 Thread Steve Walter
I got some feedback to this post with news that a River Cruiser was seen
today on Ironwood Road. It was photographed but the contact info is not
available. If you are that person (or anyone that comes across one in the
future), can you please send me a picture? There could be a unique
population waiting to be identified.

Thanks,

Steve

This is off topic, but for the benefit of some birders -- those that took
interest in a dragonfly that I pointed out at the Mississippi Kite spot the
day I was there (May 31). I had called it an Illinois River Cruiser, which
made sense as that's the only River Cruiser so far recorded in New York
State. Illinois River Cruiser (Macromia illinoiensis illinoiensis) is
considered the northern subspecies of what's now called Swift River Cruiser.
I noticed something was amiss when I edited a picture for posting on a
dragonfly e-mail list (you can see it (not a bad picture considering it was
40 feet up in a tree) at my web site
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ by clicking the dragonfly tab) . Then I
got feedback from the leading expert in the state on dragonfly
identification. He is of the opinion that this is either the southern
subspecies Georgia River Cruiser (M. i. georgina) (which ranges from central
New Jersey southward) or a hybrid (wouldn't that be fitting in an area where
Blue-winged and Golden-winged Warblers mix it up). So it just might be that
some of you went to see a rare bird in New York and saw a dragonfly even
rarer in the state.

Both Mississippi Kites put on quite a show this afternoon at Sterling Forest

There was also a singing Cerulean Warbler a little down the road at the Laurel

Bald Eagle and Raven were seen from the bridge at Narrowsburg in Sullivan Co
early this AM.

[nysbirds-l] NYC: Bryant Park, Sat. 2-Jun incl. 4 warbler spp.

2012-06-03 Thread Ben Cacace
Date: Saturday, 2 June 2012 (2:50p-6:25p)
Location: Bryant Park - between 40th & 42nd St. off 6th Ave.
Reported by: Ben Cacace

Weather for 2-Jun for Central Park (2:51p-6:51p) < http://bit.ly/M0mx5p >:
- Conditions: Clear to Mostly Cloudy

- Wind direction: N - WNW
- Wind speed: Calm - 8 mph (gusts to 18 mph)

I did a similar multiple hour visit to yesterday's 13 spp. but the totals

The only additional bird was a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER feeding on the
ground in the SW border garden of the Great Lawn. The total number of
warbler species over the 2 days is 6 with Northern Waterthrush & Blackpoll
Warbler missed this afternoon. The YELLOW WARBLER continues in the trees
along the east side of the New York Public Library in the Locusts & London
Plane trees north of the lions. It was heard singing briefly.

One of several OVENBIRDS on the west side of of the library continues to
sing south of the Great Lawn and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH continues in the
southeast storage of the park.

** Total species - 9 **

Personal abundance categories based on over 160 visits to the park.

'Rare' seen several times [1 spp]:
- Yellow Warbler - 1 male continues on E side on NYPL N of the lions in
Locusts, heard singing briefly

'Uncommon' seen less than 1 out 10 visits [2 spp]:
- Swainson's Thrush - 1 continues in the SE storage area
- Black-and-white Warbler - 1 on ground near SW border garden to the Great
Lawn

'Common' seen 1-7 out of every 10 visits [3 spp]:
- Gray Catbird - 2+ with 1 in NE border garden & 1 SW border garden
- Ovenbird - 2+ incl. 1 singing S of the Great Lawn & 1 is SE border garden
plus 1 in NE border garden
- Common Yellowthroat - 4+ females incl. 1 N of lions in hedges & 1 in

missing forehead feathers

'Abundant' seen more than 7 out of every 10 visits [3 spp]:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Request from Blue Chip Farm

2012-06-03 Thread iwarshauer
Blue Chip Farm has been very accommodating to birders over the years and
birders have been respectful of the horses. Please do not go on the fields or
do anything to interfere with the horses or we will not be welcome. It only
takes one bad apple. Irene Warshauer

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Request from Blue Chip Farm

Earlier this week i got a call from Jean Brown of Blue Chip asking that birders
refrain from entering the horse fields
while birding. Her number is 845-895-3930 X 14 or sell 845-705-7157.
She understands that Blue Chip has birds hard to see other places.
She got my number from the Audubon website (the only place she knew to look). I
said I would notify Mearns and John Burroughs too

Thanks Lynn,

It's a very sad situation when those who manage Blue Chip have to make such a
request, obviously because of previous offenses. Over the past 40 years that I
have been birding at Blue Chip Farm I have NEVER seen a soul violate those
grounds but things do change. I will call Jean Brown tomorrow and my
recommendation is that they record the license plate of ANY offenders and that
they call the State Police and have them arrested for illegal trespass. I'd
also like her to let us know who the violators are and what their license
numbers are. Knowing our Mearns members I very sincerely doubt that ANY member
would violate those grounds in any way. We all know just how many wonderful
experiences we have had with outstanding sightings.

Regards,
