The flatten area by the fisherman's road was use of sand for the
construction of the new nature and energy building being built at West End
2. At the present time there are no plans for turbine support building at
Jones Beach State Park.

Re: [nysbirds-l] RFI Corn Crake situation

2017-11-08 Thread Steven Schellenger
It is illegal to park, walk or stand on any part of the parkway. That being
said many people are doing just that to see the bird. The police only come
by every so often and clear out the people and the cars. If this bird
continues in the area police presence may increase.

Re: [nysbirds-l] RFI Corn Crake situation

2017-11-08 Thread Steven Schellenger
It is illegal to park, walk or stand on any part of the parkway. That being
said many people are doing just that to see the bird. The police only come
by every so often and clear out the people and the cars. If this bird
continues in the area police presence may increase.

In the for what it is worth department. I got word of a large raptor with a
white chest and face flying over the Southern State Parkway and heading up
the Bethpage State Parkway corridor. This bird was seen yesterday. So
anyone birding near North Massapequa, Seaford or Bethpage might want to
keep an eye on the sky. This is only a few miles from the Seaford sighting
of the Crested Caracara. This report was from an experienced birder but he
only got a few seconds look as he was driving on the parkway.

[nysbirds-l] North shore birding

2014-12-21 Thread Steven Schellenger
After bierding Jones Beach State Park this morning, I went to the north
shore to look for the Manderin Duck on pond on Engineers Rd. Roslyn Harbor.
The Manderin was a no show. Checked other ponds in area with no luck.
Then went to NYIT to look for the Greater White-fronted Goose found by Bob
Kurtz on Sat. NS CBC. after driving NYIT property found large goose flock
in field at corner of Northern Blvd. and Valentines La. Greenvale, NY. no
luck. On the way home passed by Engineers Rd. one last time, the only bird
on the pond was the Greater White-fronted Goose, scared off bya
neighborhood child that was probably coming to feed it.

Anyway, I went back in the early afternoon to take advantage of better
lighting. The glebe, I mean grebe, was by the first dock at the Coast Guard
station, around green buoy 7 (is that in for repairs or something?). After
a while, it swam out toward the outer sea wall. I do get the feeling it

did get close pictures today, I'm not real happy with them. As I'm due for
a web site update and I was set on putting up a grebe, I have a picture
that I am happy with. http://www.stevewalternature.com/

The time in between was spent driving down the causeway and back in hopes
of running into Rough-legged Hawk. The closest I got to that was Gary
showing me his picture from yesterday. I stopped off at Cedar Beach Marina
while the lot was temporarily open. Looking out and off to the west, I saw
two falcons flying westward - a large dark one repeatedly diving at a
larger, grayer looking one. Make of that what you will.

At Shinnecock Inlet this morning, the large number of gulls included 2
(perhaps 3) immature Iceland Gulls and almost certainly 2 Glaucous Gulls.
Three male Boat-tailed Grackles were on Dune Road at the Ponquogue Bridge
access, displaying a little to each other. A Snowy Owl was in the marsh
west of the bridge, near the edge of the bay. West of Docker's Restaurant,
the Black-crowned Night Heron was conspicuous, but I failed to find an
 American Bittern.

The Black Vulture was atop the chimney of a house almost opposite the
church on Sound Avenue at Church Lane. No birds of note were present at the
buffalo farm on Roanoke Avenue when I stopped there. Further west, a scan
of EpCal from several points yielded nothing. On Long Island Sound, viewed
from Park Road and Hulse Landing Road, only expected species were seen. A

Re: [nysbirds-l] Fwd: avocet (no) at jones beach coast guard

2013-08-03 Thread Steven Schellenger
The American Avocet found at Jones Beach State Park Coast Guard Station
sand spit by Bob Anderson, hung around for about an hour before being
chased off by a Peregrine Falcon that strafed the spit 3 or 4 times,
finally the American Avocet had enough and flew off toward the Loop Parkway
draw bridge.

Hi Andrew, I'm not on ABA so can't post about the avocet etc. but I have
blog of my own where I post my pics http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com/
I was at the JB Coast Guard Station looking for the avocet around 3:30 ,
but there were no signs of it...just saw short billed dowitchers, common
loon, black scoter flock, semi palmated sandpipers, sanderling in breeding
plumage. There were 2 obnoxious guys that walked onto the spit and were
chasing the birds away, so chances are they spooked the avocet away. Could
you please post this on ABA? I know it's sometimes helpful to post
 non-sightings too.

 Thanks,
 Rob

[nysbirds-l] East end of Long Island bird trip

2013-01-09 Thread Steven Schellenger
John Gaglione, Bill Hollweg, Rick Kopitsch and I spent the day on the
east end of Long Island, New York, looking for new year birds. Failing
to find a number of target birds, (Dovekie, Snowy Owl, Greater
White-fronted Goose and American Bittern) being some. We did find a
number of target birds, ( all three Scoters, Common Eider, Razorbill,
Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Goldeneye, Great Egret). We also had
some extras, at Camp Hero we had two Harlequin ducks, Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker on East Lake Dr., a flock of Common Grackles with at least
one Boat-tailed Grackle amongst them on the side of Rt. 27 in
Bridgehampton. The biggest surprise was at Kirk park in Montauk, NY on
the oceanside, After walking to the beach, Rick and I went back to the
car for our scopes, upon walking back to the beach, Bill saw a grebe
by itself to the east. He kept insisting it was different from the
Horned Grebes. I finally relented and looked at his grebe. I told Rick
to quickly look up the grebe page in his Sibley's field guide and
check for Western Grebe. After many looks by all of us, we were sure
of our ID of a Western Grebe. Calls were made and others were able to
get to see the grebe. On our way home we stopped at South Haven county
park to look for a reported Greater White-fronted Goose, but we did
not see it. We found a small flock containing 4 Pine Warblers, 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 3 Brown Creepers, Red and White breasted
Nuthatches, Tufted Titmice and Black-capped Chickadees.
A nice day of birding.

[nysbirds-l] Barrow's Goldeneye

2012-02-13 Thread Steven Schellenger
Finally made the early morning trek to the west pond at Jamaica Bay WR
this morning. When I got there at 6:45 AM there were two women there
already and they had the Barrow's Goldeneye found. Watched it swim
around and bath itself for just under a half hour. As soon as the sun
cleared the treetops and hit the water the Goldeneyes and Red-breasted
Mergansers took flight off the pond. I wonder if on a overcast day,
they might stay later. Flight time was 7:12AM

[nysbirds-l] Or Cr War - Hempstead Lake State Park

2009-12-10 Thread Steven Schellenger
This morning 12-10-09 8-10:30am while on our weekly bird survey of
Hempstead Lake State Park, parking field 3, we had an Orange-crowned
Warbler along the stream near where it empties into South Pond. Had
good looks as it flitted around for a few minutes. Nice color on the
underside of this bird.
