I live on the lake and have noted high numbers of common merganser, hooded
merganser an occasional wigeon, mallards, swan, lesser scaup and tons of geese.
In October there were ruddy ducks and we do get pied billed grebes from time to

To my surprise there is a Red-necked Grebe on the east side of Lake Ronkonkoma.
Other notables for this location being a red-throated loon and red-breasted
merganser (a mention this because in the past it was commented that others have

A good day for red in the name?

Also the ridiculous number of common Merg as usual.

Larry et al,

I live in southeast PA, about an hour away for the Black-backed Oriole which

While this is an exciting sighting, I think it's important to realize that
this is a species that shows only limited, mostly altitudinal migratory
behavior in its natural range in Mexico, and like most orioles is routinely
kept there as a cage bird (and thus, perhaps, illegally north of the border
as well). I think PORC is going to have its hands full trying to suss out
the provenance of this bird.

Subject: Re: [PABIRDS] Black-backed Oriole. Berks county

Jerald and all,

Along with the difficulties Scott Weidensaul already mentioned about this
species (primarily altitudinal migrant, endemic to central Mexico, not known
to wander widely, commonly kept in captivity at least in Mexico) is the fact
that it's an adult male -- precisely the age/sex one would most expect for
an escaped or released cage bird. If this were a young-of-the-year bird
(probably more likely to "get lost" and while also less likely to have been
shuttled up here illegally) it would be a different story. Of course, if it
was a young bird it would probably be passed off as a Bullock's or a hybrid,
ha ha!

The truth is that there is no way to prove that this bird is wild. Unless
it's directly shown somehow to be an escaped captive (which *is* provable in
certain cases), ultimately the provenance of this bird is unknowable. So it
will be up to every individual birder's own subjective judgment and
philosophy to decide whether this bird "counts". The Pennsylvania
Ornithological Records Committee, and indeed the ABA Checklist Committee,
will likewise be forced to make an entirely subjective judgment on the
record according to nothing more than their own personal philosophies and
intuition. That's simply the way it is with birds like this -- there's no
way to know for sure. So my advice would be this: if you would like a chance
to see a free-flying Black-backed Oriole and not have to travel to central
Mexico to do it, then go see this bird and enjoy it, and don't get too
caught up in the unknowable question of whether it "counts". In the end,
everyone's lists are their own.

Good birding,

Geoff Malosh

Allegheny County

(PS - my guess is this bird isn't going to "count". I'll probably go try to
see it at some point anyway.)

there are any thoughts on the pedigree of the Black backed oriole being seen

2017-02-04 Thread Ardith Bondi
WBF did, in fact, post this bird to their FB page. Unfortunately,
because of the nature of FB, the post got buried pretty quickly when
other posts were made after it, and it required a bit of effort to find
it. The good folks that work there have enough on their plates already,
and while they learn about bird species for rehabilitation, they are not
all birders who are aware of which might be considered "rarities" for
the area. That is why birders who are aware of releases usually do try
to get the word out. It just may take a day or two, like what just
happened.

first day one was reported there to NYSBirds. The origin of the bird
was
rescue from on-land stranding in Brooklyn. WBF posted to their Facebook
page a video of the bird catching live fish swimming in its waterfowl
rehab pool (pretty amusing, actually). They do that to make sure the
bird can catch its own food before releasing it.

Hi Ethan and all,
I have checked with WBF in the past in regards to for instance Virginia
Rail sightings. Am hoping to work out an agreement on heads-up notices in
the near future. Chasing rare bird reports and celebrating successful
twitches, becomes sour experiences when one afterwards find out that it was
a recent rehab released bird.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Pt. to East Hampton Birds (Suffolk Co.)
We started the morning birding the north side of the Point from the
restaurant. There were low numbers of scoters and eiders on the north side but
good numbers of Red-throated Loons and Bonaparte’s Gulls. The highlight of the
mornings birding at Montauk Pt. was a first winter Little Gull feeding fairly
close inshore off the restaurant with Bonaparte’s Gulls.

When we birded the south side of the Point we came upon a flock of some seven
thousand scoters with some Common Eider mixed in. We did not observe a single
Razorbill anywhere. At Fort Pond we came upon our FOS Red-necked Grebe. There
was a nice mix of birds at Hither Hills State Park, including five species of
raptors. The only birds of note were two Pine Warblers feeding on the lawn in
the east picnic area.

Just had extremely brief looks at a non-breeding plumage RED NECKED GREBE on
Purdys Reservoir, viewed from the end of Deans Bridge Road in Purdys NY.
Unfortunately the area of open water it was in was obscured by many trees and
the bird vanished just as I attempted to digiscope it with my phone. This is
the first time I've ever had one at this spot but considering the recent
incursion I was suspecting one would show up.

2014-03-16 Thread redknot
By 3:30 it had moved north into the eastern lobe of the reservoir in the
Massapequa Preserve about 50 yards south of the bikepath bridge. Great looks
provided from the shoreline adjacent to Brady Park. A few ring-necked ducks anf
hooded mergansers on the water.  Also had a FOS osprey making a FOS dive on a
fish that will not live to see the Spring.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe and Woodcock @ central Park NYC

2014-03-15 Thread Cesar Castillo
I haven't seen anyone post since this morning.  The Red-necked grebe was still
there at the Reservoir at 5:30PM.  I stuck around the park (at the Ramble)
looking for Oriole and maybe Pine Warbler, struck out on both, but decided to
stay until sunset when some locals alerted me to Woodcock activity in the
morning.  After the sun set, the woodcocks started calling and flying all over.
I counted 6 from the Ramble to the Museum (AMNH), and saw one quickly fly into
the street (Central Park West) infront of the Museum, then quickly did a U turn
in the air and back into the park.  It was definitely a good night for Woodcock.

Central Park today. (No one need subscribe nor register, merely have
standard internet access, in order to read all of the reports
appearing on nysbirds, unlike some other reporting mechanisms which
need not be named...)

The grebe was still present as of 5:25 p.m. Thurs., and it had flown
(I saw it fly) from near the s. shore to near the w. or almost n.w.
side of the reservoir (that flight at about 4:50 p.m.) In watching it
fly, I initially believed it could have flown out & away from the park
as I momentarily lost it in sun-glare, looking west-sw, but it had
come down in the newly-opened swath of water along the western side of
the reservoir. (there are also continuing Red-breasted Mergansers,
both male & presumed female, but these ought pose no ID issues, in any
reasonable views.)

Other changes today noted by Peter & some others, gulls were few
today, while Wood Duck numbers at the res. had reached at least 7.
Also missing for the most part were N. Shovelers, although 1 or 2 were
still at the reservoir this late afternoon. 2 pairs of Hooded
Mergansers were in opposite corners, at the nw & se edges of the open
water. The reservoir still has well over 50%, perhaps still 75% ice
cover, although more signs of ice break-up are evident by today.

good birding,

Peter,
How much breeding plumage? I saw the bird yesterday with binocs, quite far
away, late in the day with bad light and light rain and I could not discern
any breeding plumage, just shades of white and gray.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe on Patchogue Lake (Suffolk)

2014-03-10 Thread Derek Rogers
I had the pleasure of viewing a Red-necked Grebe at very close range yesterday
afternoon while birding Patchogue Lake.

The bird favored the south end of the lake and best viewing is from East 2nd
Street, located on the west side of the lake.

Lee Stocker just emailed me, reporting that the bird continues as of this
afternoon.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe, Manhattan, NYC 3/7

2014-03-07 Thread Thomas Fiore
Friday, 7 March, 2014 - Manhattan, N.Y. City

On an afternoon cycle around the northern portions of Manhattan's
waterfront, I came upon a Red-necked Grebe (in basic / winter plumage)
very close to the shore at about the "latitude" of West 168 Street,
off the upper part of [what I assume is still known as] Riverside
Park, and a good 1/2 mile south of the G.W. bridge and the well-known
landmark along the river shore at the bridge's base, the "Little Red
Lighhouse"... I watched the grebe for many minutes as it fed & swam in
a light ice flow, as well as out in more open water. This is my first
sighting of this species off Manhattan itself - within a few yards
most of the time I watched. (I may return to the site soon to see if
perhaps it is still close by, & photographable... (don't forget camera
batteries, duh) and if I don't make it there this late afternoon, may
try there tomorrow. I'm not quite sure where parking is for this area,
with a lot off the southbound W. Side Highway (or Henry Hudson Pkwy.,
same rd.) that is next to a sports area around the W. 150's (?), maybe
W. 145 St. - that lot is open now. My access is by 2-wheeler, bicycle
that is and thus along the bike & pedestrian pathway along the river's
edge. There is a very slight cove at the area where I saw the grebe...
& yes, I know how common this grebe species has been for some
(including or esp. in other boroughs of NYC) but it's a great sighting
for Manhattan - maybe even better for being a "west sider"...

Also, being up in that neighborhood, I continued on to the lagoon (&
Harlem river cut-thru that comes in from the Hudson river to the west)
at the northernmost end of Inwood Hill Park, next to West 215 Street,
and, sharing the sight with 2 other birders, saw the very striking
partially-leucistic (?) Canvasback, with a couple more of that species
in standard plumage, plus the also-striking (esp. so close by & off
Manhattan) drake White-winged Scoter, plus the 3 Scaup which I would
say are Greater, but will defer to Joe D's ID as well as anyone who
may have been able to photo, or scope, them. A Red-breasted Merganser
was also present at this area as I arrived but moved off. There may be
parking on or near West 215 Street, and there are #1 subway train
stops close by at Broadway, a 5-10 minute walk to the east.

Additional duckage was provided on the Hudson river with at least 9
Common Goldeneye (5 hens & 4 drakes) well off Spuyten Duyvil, as
viewed from the river-edge ballfields at Inwood Hill park, that are
accessed from the west end of Dyckman Street. Also, and perhaps seen
by others in recent weeks, there were at least 9 Canvasbacks around
the south side of Riverbank park, off about West 133-134 Sts. & when I
watched, not that easy to observe as there are a few obstructions and
areas which are completely off-limits to the public as one approaches
the water-treatment plant under Riverbank park. I saw little of note
at Swindler Cove park & adjacent areas (off the east end of Dyckman
St., n. Manhattan) later, but that whole area can be well-worth
checking - especially as ice clears away.

I may as well also mention that the previously reported drab-plumafed
Pine Warbler, 2 Baltimore Orioles (one in full adult male color), &
some of the other birds recently seen all continued at the feeders in
Central Park's Ramble this morning. The warbler & orioles may take a
while to appear, the more so if various hawks are lurking and or other
temporary disturbances are found.

good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe etc, NY Harbor

2014-02-09 Thread Gabriel Willow
On today's NYC Audubon Winter Eco-cruise, we had some great sightings:

In Buttermilk Channel by Governor's Island, we had a large flock of a couple
hundred Scaup (all Greater I believe), also several Buffleheads, Red-breasted
Merganser, Gadwall, Am. Black Duck, and Double-crested Cormorant.

In Erie Basin there was the lingering American Coot, more of the above ducks, a
Horned Grebe, and a few American Widgeon. In the harbor off of Redhook we had a
number of Red-throated Loons and a bit further out (somewhere off of Sunset
Park) we had a pair of Red-necked Grebes.

Several more Loons were spotted around the harbor & narrows (probably 8
Red-throated & 3 Common), as well as a number of Horned Grebes & the usual gull
species.

By Hoffman Island we spotted several small flocks of Long-tailed Ducks and
American Black Ducks.

Swinburne Island had a charming gang of Harbor Seals loafing on the rocks (at
least a dozen, including several small yearling pups).

Birds on & around Swinburne included a few Purple Sandpipers, a Ruddy
Turnstone, several sanderling, a flyby Common Goldeneye, and a Great Cormorant.

Not a bad day!

Cheers,

Gabriel Willow

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe from Piermont Pier, Rockland Co.

2014-01-27 Thread Alan Wells
The Red-necked grebe reported by Evan Mark at Piermont Pier, Rockland Co.,
was seen at approximately 2:00 PM (1/27/2014) well out into the main channel
of the Hudson River just slightly upriver from the end of the pier. The bird
was in the scope for about a minute, but was frequently obscured by
whitecaps. I left for about 2 minutes to retrieve my camera but could not
relocate the bird when I returned. Probably still around but the high winds
and chop on the river made viewing difficult.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe etc. NY Harbor

2014-01-26 Thread gabriel willow
While leading an NYC Audubon Winter Birds & Seals eco-cruise today around NY
Harbor, we saw some nice birds.  Several large rafts of Scaup (mostly Greater I
think, but too distant for me to safely say) were sheltering along Governor's
Island and the Red-hook shore, probably totalling about 400 birds.  Also dozens
of Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, and a couple of Hooded Merganser.  In
Erie Basin, we saw several Gadwall, an American Wigeon, a single American Coot,
and Black Ducks.

Out near Swinburne & Hoffman Islands, past the Verrazanno Narrows, we saw
numerous Long-tailed Ducks, a few Common Goldeneye, a Common Loon and a Horned
Grebe.  Also a half-dozen Harbor Seals in the water by Swinburne, which were
unusually acrobatic, splashing with their flippers and porpoising clear out of
the water on several occasions.

On the way back, I tried to see the Common Gull as we passed Veteran's Memorial
Pier, which at that very moment Andrew et al were observing, but it was too far
away (it was pretty confusing trying to explain to the folks on the tour that
there were a bunch of common gulls around the pier, and one rare gull, called
the Common Gull!).  However, we had a great view of a Red-necked Grebe in the
water off of the sewage treatment plant, which is the first I recall seeing in
NY Harbor in some time.  It took flight and headed west towards Staten Island.

A nice (if brisk) afternoon out on the water!

Stay warm,

Gabriel Willow

I saw the Red-necked Grebe today (between 1PM and 2PM) swimming (alone) on the

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe & Razorbills, Rye

2011-12-30 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi all,

RAZORBILLS continue off Rye, Westchester County. Bob Shriber and I had a good
number this morning (~7, but probably more present), with many sitting on the
water. Conditions on the Sound were very calm, allowing us to also pick out a
RED-NECKED GREBE relatively far offshore. Lighting at Read is best in the
afternoon, so sound-watching conditions could be good if calm waters persist
throughout the day.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe at JBWR

2010-05-31 Thread John Gavrity
Found a Red-necked Grebe in the marsh opposite bench 6 on the west
pond. When I left it was swimming west. Took some photos through my
blackberry I'll try to post later.

Sorry Doug, the emails I sent got kicked back to me.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked grebe, late yellow warbler, and waterfowl

2009-11-15 Thread Seth Ausubel
A few interesting birds on a warm November day included a red-necked
grebe scoped on Great South Bay from the fishing pier at Captree State
Park, Suffolk County, and a very late yellow warbler, also at
Captree. The warbler was in the brush on the north edge of the
parking lot where an asphalt path leads to the middle of the fishing
pier. "Bull's Birds of New York State" (1998) lists the extreme fall
date for yellow warbler as 24 Oct, though I think there are some more
recent late records in NY State and there are records into December
and January in other northeastern states. The bird was bright yellow
below with a faint diffuse orange on the breast, and bright greenish-
yellow above including the crown. According to "Peterson's Field
Guides - Warblers", by Dunn and Garrett, birds at this late date would
be D. p. amnicola, or another of the northerly breeding sub-species,
though this bird seemed very brightly colored, more like the
coloration described for the locally breeding subspecies, D.p. aestiva.

Waterfowling in Suffolk was slow. A female common goldeneye was at
Connetquot River State Park. It took an Internet search for me to
identify a male cape shelduck, which was at Belmont Lake State Park.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe sighting

2009-11-08 Thread Rob Jett
I ran into Steve Nanz at Floyd Bennett Field this morning. He was
leading a trip for the BBC and told me that they spotted a Red-necked
Grebe earlier in the morning. They were at Plum Beach and the grebe
was on the bay traveling towards Sheepshead Bay. I headed back on my
bike and spotted the bird a little past 12 noon. It was at the mouth
of Sheepshead Bay, closer to Kingsborough Community College than Plum
Beach. I was on a concrete pier (of sorts) at the end of Brigham
Street. To get a closer look I rode my bike around to the Kingsborough
campus where I was stopped by security. Apparently, the college
doesn't permit bicycles on campus, even if I just walked it. How
forward thinking and conservation minded. Anyway, I tried looking for
the bird from the Menorah Nursing Home seawall, next door, but was too
far away from the eastern tip of the peninsula. Here's a link to a map:

One other sighting of possible interest was a flock of 10 Horned Larks
at the Cricket Field in Floyd Bennett Field.

Good birding,

Rob
