Hi, Do you mean, node is nothing but compute node right. Then it is straight forward you can add your logic scheduler or you can come up with your own scheduler algorithm which will take care where to create next instance. Go through the Good article on Scheduler: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/blogs/e93514d3-c4f0-4aa0-8844-497f370090f5/?lang=en Please let me know for further details the implementation or adding logic to existing. [Openstack] Greatest deployment?
Hello, Few days ago I read something about OpenNebula,it's the main competitor in open source for Openstack, beside Eucalyptus, as far as i know. I found ( http://blog.opennebula.org) something about tens of thousands of VMs and OpenNebula's performance (maybe CERN has such huge deployment, who knows they didn't mention that) and I'm just wondering what about Openstack performance. [Openstack] Unused code in Nova [was Re: Quota classes]

Is this association maintained by keystone instead? - is the quota_class attribute currently being set on the request context anywhere in the dispatch path? Is the idea that the auth middleware takes care of this? The basic answer is that there isn't anything in nova right now that does this, partly because it's a slightly difficult question to answer correctly for everyone. In my testing environment, for instance, I use a Turnstile preprocessor to set the quota_class attribute on the request context to be the same as the selected rate limit class. I envisioned that, ultimately, the quota_class would be set by the authentication processing middleware(s), but I'm not against adding an association to nova to manage that. So, I'm looking into the quotas code properly for the first time while reviewing one of the quota refactor patches and I come across the quota_class property on RequestContext My last 45 minutes have been: Where is quota_class being set? Nowhere in Nova, really? Let's double, triple check that. Maybe the auth token middleware is setting it? Nope. Well, let's look back through the git log and see if it was ever being set. Nope, even the commit which initially added it doesn't set it. Hmm, the commit which adds quota classes doesn't reference a blueprint. Ok, let's google quota classes. Ah, a thread with the blueprint which helps hugely and a similar question from Eoghan. Ah, Eoghan has also filed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/969537 So, turnstile is setting this? More googling turns up: https://lists.launchpad.net/openstack/msg09322.html Ok, dig into turnstile and nova_limits. Nope, they're not setting it either. Poke around Kevin's github repo and discover rs_limits: https://github.com/klmitch/rs_limits Rackspace-specific Rate Limit Preprocessor for Turnstile Ah! Now I see. This is code added specifically for a Rackspace specific plugin! Now, there are some positives here - the blueprint, discussions on the mailing list, the launchpad bug, that turnstile and co. are in github, etc. means it was actually possible to figure this out. Awesome, seriously. But ... please. Pretty please. Can we avoid adding unused code to Nova? At the very least, can we document in the code why unused stuff has been added? However, I discovered that Squid doesn't document official support of the method: http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/SquidLogs. Oh, how embarrassment. I'll get that fixed ASAP. I wanted to ask if there are any other key infrastructure pieces that foolishly hard-code request methods like this. It might make us want to rethink using PATCH at all. You've found the major one above; there are probably a few over-zealous inspecting firewalls out there as well, but given that this'll run over TLS (right?), neither Squid or any other such intermediary should be a problem (they could be deployed for SSL termination and/or as reverse proxies, but Squid, at least, can be configured to accept new methods http://www.squid-cache.org/Versions/v3/3.0/cfgman/extension_methods.html). OK. We have a message id, but I assumed those would be used to eliminate duplicates so this sounds like something different or new. It implies that the agent knows its own id (not hard) and keeps up with a sequence counter (more difficult, though not impossible). Did you have something in mind for how to implement that? Actually, this was my intent in the original blueprint when I specified the message_id field then a couple lines bellow: a process may verify that messages were not lost. On the implementation side, I was thinking that each agent would maintain its own sequence count, as a global instance count would be pricier. In my mind, non repudiation was built from the message_signature + message_id which should be unique for each agent. OK. That brings a couple of more specific questions to mind: Does the agent save its sequence counter through a restart? How and where? What about an upgrade? Seems easily stored locally. What would the down-stream consumer of the data do if it discovered there was a missing event? Who should do that detection work? Not sure we need to worry about auditing process yet, just make sure that we provide necessary the necessary information to do proper auditing. In principle, an audit process could then trigger an alert for further investigation of the issue. OK. As James (I think) pointed out in another message and I verified yesterday, the libvirt data is cumulative, so for those counters at least we don't need to worry about missing an event. On the other hand, that fact complicates the API a bit because the sum for disk I/O is not the addition of all of the events in the database but the volume value from the most recent event. We may need per-counter logic behind the API to perform the correct query if some of the counters are cumulative and some are incremental. Re: [Openstack] Greatest deployment?
Hi, On May 24, 2012, at 5:45 AM, Thierry Carrez wrote: OpenNebula has also this advantage, for me, that it's designed also to provide scientific cloud and it's used by few research centres and even supercomputing centres. How about Openstack? Anyone tried deploy it in supercomputing environment? Maybe huge cluster or GPU cluster or any other scientific group is using Openstack? Is anyone using Openstack in scentific environement or Openstack's purpose is to create commercial only cloud (business - large and small companies)? OpenStack is being used in a number of research clouds, including NeCTAR (Australia's national research cloud). There is huge interest around bridging the gap there, with companies like Nimbis or Bull being involved. Hopefully people with more information than I have will comment on this thread. We're developing GPU, bare metal, and large SMP (think SGI UV) support for Openstack and we're targeting HPC/scientific computing workloads. It's a work in progress, but we have people using our code and we're talking to folks about getting our code onto nodes within FutureGrid. We have GPU support for LXC right now, and we're working on adding support for other hypervisors as well. We're also working on getting the code into shape for merging upstream, some of which (the bare metal work) has already been done. We had an HPC session at the most recent Design Summit, and it was well-attended with lots of great input. If there are specific features that you're looking for, we'd love to hear about it. By the way, all of our code is available at https://github.com/usc-isi/nova, so if you'd like to try it out before it gets merged upstream, go for it. best, JP ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack Post to : openstack@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Openstack] Where to add the performance increasing method in openstack
Hi! You would want to report this information to the Scheduler (probably via the db) so it can make more informed decisions. A new Weight Function in the scheduler would be the place to add it specifically. We currently track the number of VM I/O operations being performed on each Compute node for this (build, resize, migration, etc) but nothing within the guest itself. Could be handy for certain verticals. Thanks guys. Here is the output of the curl command: {error: {message: Invalid tenant, code: 401, title: Not Authorized}} Seems like there is no such tenant in keystone database. I tried doing keystone tenant-list but it keeps on asking for one extra argument each time (i.e after keystone tenant-list, I tried keystone --os_username admin tenant-list and keystone --os_username --os_password tenant-list ). Sandy, I like the suggestion of graphvis, although I haven't used it for a while. Is there a dir in nova appropriate to put .dot files? I was hoping to get the proposal discussed a few round, and while it's getting stabilized, we can work on the graphvis representation. Thanks, Yun On Wed, May 23, 2012 at 11:28 AM, Sandy Walsh sandy.wa...@rackspace.com wrote: Hi Yun, I like the direction you're going with this. Unifying these three enums would be a great change. That way we can keep it under version control, have funky pictures and there are libraries for parsing .dot files in Python. Also we can use the graphvis doc to actually drive the state machine (via attributes on nodes/edges) I'd like to see more discussion on how reconciliation will be handled in the event of a conflict. Re: [Openstack] Can't ssh into instance
It's not an open-ssh issue. Your virtual machine simply can't fetch the metadata, cloud-init can't to be more accurate. Without this your ssh key is not imported. This is why the machine is well running, you can ping it but you can't access it because the authorized_keys file on the vm is not fulfill. If you are only running a nova-compute node, installing nova-api-metadata will do the trick! Also verify those values in your nova.conf : - --vncserver_proxyclient_address=IP_CURRENT_NODE - --vncserver_listen=IP_CURRENT_NODE - --ec2_dmz_host=IP_CURRENT_NODE - --routing_source_ip=IP_CURRENT_NODE - --my_ip=IP_CURRENT_NODE Let us know a little more about your setup :) Cheers! Re: [Openstack] Greatest deployment?
We did some considerable HPC testing when I worked over at NASA Ames with the Nebula project. So I think we may have been the first to try out openstack in an HPC capacity. If you can find Piyush Mehrotra from the NAS division at Ames, ( I'll leave it to you to look him up ) he has comprehensive OpenStack tests from the Bexar days. He'd probably be willing to share some of that data if there was interest ( assuming he hasn't already ). Several points of interest I think worth mentioning are: I think fundamentally many of the folks who are used to doing HPC work dislike working with hypervisors in general. The memory management and general i/o latency is something they find to be a bit intolerable. OpenNebula, and OpenStack rely on the same sets of open source hypervisors. In fact, I believe OpenStack supports more. What they do fundamentally is operate as an orchestration layer on top of the hypervisor layer of the stack. So in terms of performance you should not see much difference between the two at all. That being said, that's ignoring the possibility of scheduler customisation and the sort. We ultimately, much like Amazon HPC ended up handing over VMs to customers that consumed all the resources on a system thus negating the benefit of VMs by a large amount. 1 primary reason for this is pinning the 10 gig drivers, or infiniband if you have it, to a single VM allows for direct pass through and no hypervisor latency. We were seeing a maximum throughput on our 10 gigs of about 8-9 gbit with virtio / jumbo frames via kvm, while hardware was slightly above 10. Several vendors in the area I have spoken with are engaged in efforts to tie in physical layer provisioning with OpenStack orchestration to bypass the hypervisor entirely. LXC is not a good alternative for several obvious reasons. So think on all of that. GPUs are highly specialised. Depending on your workloads you may not benefit from them. Again you have the hardware pinning issue in VMs. As far as Disk I/O is concerned, large datasets need large disk volumes. Large non immutable disk volumes. So swift / lafs go right out the window. nova-volume has some limitations ( or it did at the time ) euca tools couldn't handle 1 TB volumes and the APT maxed out around 2. So we had users raiding their volumes and asking how to target them to nodes to increase I/O. This was sub optimal. Luster or gluster would be better options here. We chose gluster because we've used luster before, and anyone who has knows it's pain. As for node targeting users cared about specific families of cpus. Many people optimised by cpu and wanted to target westmeres of nehalems. We had no means to do that at the time. Scheduling full instances is somewhat easier so long as all the nodes in your zone are full instance use only. So was there thought about the fedora and other distributions when adding this as a dependency. I thought we were going to try to support both, but if a package is currently only in a single distribution, that makes it hard to develop on both. Not sure if this is valid, and it might be helpful: http://nodejs.tchol.org/ It seems like this hairy wart is coming back up again, ie, not including stuff on only one distro, or at least planning ahead accordingly to how the other distros can get it... Re: [Openstack] Nodejs in horizon
Hi Joshua, Node.js is in the standard repos for most modern distros. It's not an issue for Ubuntu/Fedora. We are using Node.js for a package called Less with does asset compression for us. Less is Apache 2 licensed so we have included it directly within Horizon: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/horizon/+spec/transition-to-lesscss Relying on Node.js actually opens up a lot of possibilities in the future for us to do realtime websocket communications via node.js and still rely on django to do the heavy lifting: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/horizon/+spec/realtime-communication All this aside, I'm a bit confused why you are asking us to justify a new dependency. (We don't have to.) What is your actual concern here? We are talking about a single package, and a single line patch to update devstack. Re: [Openstack] Nodejs in horizon
That's fine, I just want to make sure there is a vetting process for new packages. With documented reasons, documentation on how the distros will get to having that package (if they don't) and so on. Seeing that this is a multiple distribution project, it seems pretty relevant to make sure that everyone that is affected by this, is ready for it, especially for devs. Maybe that's just me missing some IRC log somewhere, but I just wanted to raise this concern on behalf of others (and myself). It'd be nice to have this vetting process be something more formal imho, but I'll let the community decide... On 5/24/12 12:43 PM, Gabriel Hurley gabriel.hur...@nebula.com wrote: Hi Josh, As for packages, I can't speak to Fedora offhand, but Ubuntu has the nodejs package which is what we've used internally for development and for the devstack gate going forward. The LESS binary itself is being bundled with Horizon to alleviate versioning incompatibilities and package differences across OS's. As for why, having been involved in the discussion and decision let me present a few components of the reasoning as they relate to Horizon's core values (expressed here: http://horizon.openstack.org/intro.html#values): 1. Manageable: The CSS stylesheet for the OpenStack Dashboard had become unmaintainable. It was and (until we split it up after LESS lands) is a complete mess, over 1000 lines long. We needed a solution that continues to allow us to build in a more reasonable fashion. There are plenty of modern tools for this (LESS, SASS, etc.). We can split apart the stylesheet into logical modules, define variables, mixins and transformations so we update code in one place rather than twenty... so on and so forth. 2. Extensible: LESS allows third-party developers to import and build from the core stylesheet(s) instead of copying and pasting the stylesheet wholesale, causing the pain of staying up-to-date with changes, bugfixes, etc. 3. Consistent: As mentioned above, we can define variables and mixins which can be used everywhere, preventing the I wrote the same styles ten places and forgot to update them all problems that every frontend developer knows all too well. 4. Stable: At this point node.js and LESS are well-proven technologies, being leveraged by large companies and large projects all over the globe. 5. Usable: From a developer standpoint, LESS and SASS are light-years ahead of static CSS in terms of writing code. The end product to the consumer is more-or-less identical. We did evaluate a number of other implementation options for meeting these needs (develop with LESS and commit both the .less and final .css files, using SASS which is built on Ruby, etc.) but came to this as the best long-term solution. CERN is more of a high throughput computing environment rather than a high performance site. Hi, I could only check the setup now but thanks for the tips, it worked! So the trick was to have the rabbit sevice on the compute host as well. Also there have been several other emails in the threat with more detailed info (e.g. Multinode=true instead of multinode=1, etc). Thanks for the help! /Nico. On 23 May 2012 20:55, Dan Wendlandt d...@nicira.com wrote: Hi nico, This may be related to another thread currently on the ML about multi-node devstack. There seems to be a bug in multi-node devstack that if you do not specify rabbit as one of the enabled services on each compute node, the nova-compute on the compute node tries to contact the rabbit server on localhost, rather than on the IP specified by RABBIT_HOST. If the compute nodes are not correctly connecting to rabbit, I believe the scheduler would not be able to notify those servers to create VMs, which *may* explain why your instances are getting stuck in scheduling. Looking at the nova-compute log on your compute hosts could probably help determine if this is the issue, as there would be errors due to the failure to connect to rabbit. Putting rabbit in the set of ENABLED_SERVICES on all nodes seems to have worked for me as a work around. Re: [Openstack] Quantum+Openvswitch: could not open /dev/net/tun: Operation not permitted
Hi Igor, Are you running this on Precise? If so, Precise is a bit pickier than previous versions about requiring a setting in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf You need to add /dev/net/tun to the cgroup_device_acl list in that file, and restart libvirt. This is actually handled automatically by a branch I've pushed for review in devstack: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/7001/ It has lots of positive reviews, but still needs one more core review and I've been waiting a while. If you're a devstack core, please give me a hand! :) Dan p.s. the root cause of needing to tweak /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf is that we're using libvirt interface type=ethernet elements to work with openvswitch. Starting in libvirt 0.9.11 (not available in precise), openvswitch is integrated directly with libvirt, meaning that using type=ethernet (and the workaround) is no longer necessary. Current status seems to be: - we're OK enforcing 2.4 coding standards for agent code in the quantum repo, so long as it does not become onerous (currently this is mainly a matter of simple things like not using as or with) - the bigger question is around code from other repos that may be pulled in, particularly openstack-common. Its unclear if those projects can be kept 2.4 clean, this may well prove substantially more onerous than just keeping quantum agent code clean (perhaps those requiring 2.4 can help with that). - another option is to avoid running the agents on dom0 all together and instead use the service-vm that is already used in xenserver deployments to run nova-compute. There are a couple options here, including a suggestion from rkukura to potentially utilize the rootwrap functionality so that the agent could run in the service-vm, but dispatch calls to dom0. mnewby has been leading the effort to maintain XenServer support and he has been out this week (and will be out next as well, I think), so I think exploring those options may have to wait a week unless someone else wants to drive. Re: [Openstack] [Swift] Question about cloudfiles API
It is mostly the likely the self-signed certificate issue you suspected. Java (and other languages) are pretty notorious for rejecting such unless you configure them just right. I haven't worked with Java in 10 years, so my knowledge of how to fix that is pretty useless, hopefully another will speak up and help. You probably had to use -k with curl right? That would confirm the self-signed issue. Just as a note, the SSL capabilities for the Swift proxy server are truly for basic testing only. You might want to start with non-SSL and then lock it down after you get things working otherwise. For SSL capabilities, an SSL-terminating load balancer in front of the Swift proxy servers is recommended. You /could/ use DNS-round-robin balancing to proxies with SSL turned on, but like I mentioned, that's really just for testing purposes. In a production deployment, you'd definitely want SSL terminated at the load balancer(s). Now, which load balancers to use is a whole other email thread, so I won't mention that for now, you may already have particular requirements in mind anyway. On May 24, 2012, at 3:03 PM, Shawn Heisey wrote: This question is probably more appropriate for the Swift mailing list, but I could not figure out how to subscribe to that list, so it's going here. I have set up a Swift cluster using the ubuntu multi-server HOWTO and I can use the commandline utilities to upload and download files. Now I need to do a test using the Java API. I downloaded java-cloudfiles and I can't seem to make it work. It fails at the login() step. I've got the default user/password set up from the HOWTO. Initially I suspected that the problem was due to the self-signed certificate, but watching syslog on the primary proxy server, I don't see any requests logged, but I do see a conversation happen on port 8080 with tcpdump. How can I troubleshoot this? Re: [Openstack] Nodejs in horizon
That's what I was worried about, and why I (just my opinion) think that we need to be a lot stricter about vetting new dependencies. There needs to be time given to say, ensuring that its really needed, if it really is, documenting why it has to be there in depth, getting various PTL's to agree on that, then comes the process of informing and/or discussing with the distributions about how to get that supported (if it isn't). That second stage might influence the first and so on. Since problems like this, although yes, it slows down development overall, seem necessary in a larger project with multiple distributions being enabled (for development usage and for actual prod. usage). I agree its early, but why was it problem in the first place? Well, I think you are witnessing it happening. We now know about it. It's early enough in the release cycle that hopefully we can react and make it not be a problem by the time Folsom comes around. In this particular case, it's a pretty big dependency. It's not just a simple Python library to package up ... but I do agree with Devin that upstream shouldn't hold back because of it, as long as the more invasive changes like this are made as early as possible in the release cycle. We'll look into the state of affairs for getting Node.js packaged. Pádraig Brady also has an interesting question/suggestion for this particular issue on the code review: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/7367/ node is a big dependency just for lesscss. I wonder could this feature be tweaked to give a configuration option to run lesscss on the client? That might be desired to reduce load on the server, or to ease the installation burden due to node not being easily available for all platforms at present. That would sure save us a lot of headaches if we could make that work. :-) -- Russell Bryant ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack Post to : openstack@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Openstack] New layout of the OpenStack mailing lists
Hello folks, we're working on a new mailing list server to host our discussions. The main factor behind the move was described in this message by ttx: http://openstack.markmail.org/thread/ybwazse63sgxozh2 The current layout is drafted on http://etherpad.openstack.org/newmlist-layout The open questions remain: - what to do with the current list hosted on Launchpad (and its archive) - where to host the list for DevOps (if we agree we need to add one) What do you suggest to do? thanks stef PS sent to the openstack dev list only FYI. Please keep the discussion on the openstack-community list. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack Post to : openstack@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Openstack] Nodejs in horizon
Calling it broken is a bit of an overstatement. As noted previously, node.js can be installed and configured (http://nodejs.tchol.org/) on Fedora. It's just not in the Fedora default package repositories. My reading of the ticket on the redhat bugzilla also indicates that there's active work to get it included, since it's becoming a very popular and wide-spread tool. I'm willing to spend more development cycles over the course of the Folsom release cycle to make sure there's a path forward for Fedora users, but I haven't heard any blockers here yet. Whether those solutions include documentation, configurable options for client-side processing for users who don't wish to use node on the server-side, or other ideas... Patches are always welcome. ;-) I would, however, ask the leadership of the Openstack community (the PPB?) to make some official documented decisions on distro support, though. I did a fair bit of googling and wiki searching and couldn't find any official list of supported distros for OpenStack. It'd be really helpful! :-) All the best, - Gabriel -Original Message- From: openstack-bounces+gabriel.hurley=nebula@lists.launchpad.net [mailto:openstack- bounces+gabriel.hurley=nebula@lists.launchpad.net] On Behalf Of Russell Bryant Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2012 3:38 PM To: Devin Carlen Cc: openstack; Yahoo Openstack Developers Subject: Re: [Openstack] Nodejs in horizon On 05/24/2012 03:40 PM, Devin Carlen wrote: Hi Joshua, Node.js is in the standard repos for most modern distros. [Openstack] [XenAPI] Implementing text console (log)
Hello, I am currently doing work on adding the text logs / console output into XenServer, a feature that has not been implemented: https://github.com/openstack/nova/blob/master/nova/virt/xenapi/vmops.py#L1345 At the moment, I have a sort-of working concept of it that only runs under XS6 (the only one that offers VT100 terminals), however it has a fallback to returning nothing if it doesn't find one, however, there is an issue. The way to get the console output is by getting the console URL and CONNECT-ing to it, an example of this in a curl is the following: curl -k -X CONNECT 'https://192.168.1.215/console?uuid=6e12b329-6d72-19a4-f8ea-61dedcd049b9session_id=OpaqueRef:d04043d3-4328-c1b6-1a2a-4a3638419967' The curl process will appear to be hanging, but if you run any commands or type anything, you'll see it appear in the screen. Obviously, you need your own session_id and console UUID with type VT100. The potential resolution I can see for this is simply having a process that CONNECT-s to consoles when any VM starts and just keeps storing it in a file and we can read that file at any given points, however, I'm not sure if we can create this type of architecture in Nova (or if we can start background threads, etc). Also, it would need to handle any reboots (as a new console will be generated) and re-connect to it. This should not be hard to handle as it only requires a restart when the connection is dropped. I'm not sure to as what the best way to approach this at the moment so I would like the input of the OpenStack XenAPI community so we can get this silly-sounding feature to output proper output instead of fake data. Improving logging by a lot (so that u can debug this thing) 4. Making what handlers I left work on RH and ubuntu... Might be useful if u want to try it. Well I notice there is no cloud-init package for EPEL. I took a quick stab at it here: http://pbrady.fedorapeople.org/cloud-init-el6/ I've already responded in IRC, but it wouldn't hurt to have a response in the mail archive. In short, the reason there isn't already a cloud-init for EL6 (or EL5, for that matter) is that upstream has been using python 2.7-only calls for a while now. In particular, a couple of calls to subprocess.check_output need to be replaced, and I think there are a few other issues as well. I don't think it's a huge amount of work to make it functional, but it hasn't been high on anyone's list. It would be cool if you have time to fix / test it, though. Ok I've fixed the check_output calls at the above URL. cheers, Pádraig. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack Post to : openstack@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack Post to : openstack@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
