[opnfv-tech-discuss] [Dovetail] Initial input on SDNVPN test compliance with Dovetail criteria

2017-03-31 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

As promised last week, I have started to fill out the test suite structure
template for SDNVPN. I ran a bit out of time but there's some initial input for
discussion here:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/sdnvpn/SDNVPN+Testing#SDNVPNTesting-TestcompliancetemplateforDovetail

The same page also contains the detailed test case descriptions.

General comments:

- it would be good to collect input like this in Dovetail somewhere
(I'd prefer Gerrit over Wiki for that purpose since it's going to be easier to
review & comment), instructions should be provided.

- The template is asking for a statement if the tests are in the
defined testing scope as set by the C committee, which is not yet available.
A catch-22 apparently...

Regards, Tim

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [dovetail]dovtail repo udate

2017-04-06 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Hongbo,

Would it make sense to go ahead and submit patches for these changes so that we
can review & discuss on Gerrit? I think this would speed up the process...

Regards, Tim

Subject: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [dovetail]dovtail repo udate

Hi dovetailers:

It is time for us to update the dovetail repo. I have taken the action item to
send the email for this topic.
Add Sofia and chirs here to help us check docs.

Here is my two cents for the starts.

About the docs directory:

-dovetailtool
-plugfest
-testing
-testsuites
-userguide

In order to keep consistent with the OPNFV docs: here is the suggestion:

docs/testing/user/testsuites/IPv6
docs/testing/user/testsuites/worksheet
docs/testing/user/dovetailtool
docs/testing/user/index.rst
docs/testing/user/teststrategy
docs/testing/developer/?

I suggest to remove the plugfest related files, since the plugfest has its own
place.

Here is repo:
-.gitignore
-.gitreview
-INFO
-LICENSE
-dashboard
-docker
-docs
-dovetail
-requirements.txt
-setup.cfg
-setup.py
-test-requirements.txt
-tox.ini
-utils

My suggestion: 1) move the utils to the dovetail 2)move the dashboard to the
dovetail

Any comments are welcome.

Best regards

hongbo

All,

After checking with several scenarios owners during the Release call today,
there was a consensus that people were ready to tag for the Danube 3.0 release
on July 14th. There were some scenarios with degradation compared to 1.0 or
2.0 releases, but they would be explained in documentations (e.g. due to
upstream bug).

So, I'd like to ask the TSC members to vote on the following by 5pm Pacific
Time July 12th.

"Does the TSC approve the Danube 3.0 release date of July 14? (+1, 0, -1)"

Thanks,

Ray

This is exactly the intention of the proposal, under the side constraint of
drawing from already existing tests. The question to the TSC was if this is
enough for an initial release. I think your answer is no.

The Dovetail team needs concrete guidance what is missing. The above is not
actionable, please be more specific.

What do the other TSC members think? Are you satisfied with the proposed test
scope for an initial release of the CVP? If not, what is missing?

Georg provided a detailed context on doctor and models. I just want to add
that, in a nutshell, we are considering these and other areas as use case
testing. The SUTs functions scope remains the same. So I think we are largely
in sync in terms of capturing the middle ground that you we're referring to.
Stress testing then adds another dimension.

I'm still on road, sorry slow response.

Hi Dave,

Your comments are very valid - and mainly in line with (my interpretation) of
the future direction of the Dovetail test scope as discussed last week. We in
fact agreed that more basic NFVI testing is required. As a result of this, the
vping test cases have been proposed for inclusion. Let me add some more color
to Tim's summary:

Doctor:
Our observation was that the Doctor tests run on (all) scenarios without the
requirement for scenario owners to add special components or configuration.
Because of this, the functionality tested by Doctor can be considered as basic
NFVI functionality rather than scenario- or project-specific functionality.
Nevertheless, this needs to be investigated and confirmed as part of the
Euphrates scope.

Models:
The relevant aspect of the model test cases is that they include multi-VM VNF
deployments and connectivity tests. In this regard, you can consider them as
vping++ test cases. In the context of Dovetail, we will investigate how we can
leverage these existing test cases without requiring specific functionality
developed by Models. For example, we could factor out the model translation
process used by Models and instead just use plain Heat templates or even just
bash scripts. The important aspect under test here is a more complex VNF
deployment.

Of course, all those test cases need to be checked against the test
requirements defined in Dovetail as part of the Euphrates work.

Best regards
Georg

2017-06-23 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Dave, all,

Sorry for misunderstanding your point. In that case, is there any other
feedback from other TSC members on the proposal?

Tapio & Ray, I think we should reserve some time in next week's TSC to go over
the suggested test scope (both mandatory and optional parts) for Danube
compliance testing once more so that the Dovetail team can be confident about
focusing on the right things.

On the contrary - the initial release scope is fine, my comment was on the
"future plans" piece.

Thanks,

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] [dovetail] TSC and DoveTail meeting to discuss scope and needs for CVP testing

2017-06-13 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

During the Beijing design summit, the Dovetail team has considered the recent
feedback from TSC and has identified the following set of actions towards an
initial CVP release:

  * Have all ongoing documentation-related Gerrit reviews merged, documents
finalized (no editor's notes, open actions etc.)
  * Move HA tests from optional to mandatory
 * For information: Current HA suite kills OpenStack service process and
verifies continuous API availability
  *   Make Functest's vPing a mandatory test

We would like to request feedback from TSC if this set of actions is sufficient
to address the recently provided feedback, or if there is anything else the TSC
would deem required for the initial release.

In addition the Dovetail team walked through the list of OPNFV feature projects
and concluded that currently no other projects than the already included ones
are advanced enough for compliance verification, due to varying reasons (e.g.
depending on midstream patches, etc.).

To provide visibility into what would be coming next, an initial list of work
items for Euphrates was created:

  *   Stress testing
  * Include Doctor (optional/mandatory is tbd)
  * Include Models (the OPNFV project) test cases (launch a sample multi-VM
VNF)
 * We need to check these against the test case requirements
  * Incorporate more OPNFV feature projects (e.g. SFC etc.)

Regards,

Tim (on behalf of the entire Dovetail team)

There is an hour allocated for this topic. I’d encourage everyone interested,
esp. TSC members, please make an effort to join:

  * Day 2, Tuesday, 14:00 - 15:00, Sculpture Room, Dovetail Danube status and
release planning, consideration of OPNFV projects in Danube, and tutorial
session

And if needed, this session can be extended to the next hour which currently is
allocated for Euphrates topics but less urgent. There is also a TSC/board joint
meeting on Friday that has a dedicated timeslot to report on CVP. With both
sessions, we may have the time needed. Tapio, I’m not sure how practical of
scheduling another meeting with the TSC at this point, but Chris’s point is a
good one, maybe we can ask/encourage TSC members to join the Dovetail session
above in order to facilitate quicker resolution. Thanks.

Subject: [opnfv-tsc] [dovetail] TSC and DoveTail meeting to discuss scope and
needs for CVP testing

Hi Tapio/HongBo,

On this weeks TSC call I understood there was an identified need for some form
of working session between the TSC and the DoveTail team to describe the
wanted/needed scope of CVP testing that DoveTail should develop for the CVP in
any given release.
As a number of us we will be in Beijing next week would this be a good
opportunity to start such a dialog? We have things like DoveTail Euphrates
planning etc on the agenda, but it would seem that we have an urgent need to
set the scope of Danube together with the TSC as a basic pre-requisite to any
other planning work.

Do we have sufficient representation at the event for such a dialog?
Could we potentially reallocate one of the scheduled hours to facilitate such a
discussion?

I don’t think we should ignore the feedback from this weeks TSC meeting, it
would seem urgent that we get this done so that we can make progress on the
right things moving forward if we hope to launch something this year.
If we are not able to do this next week, I would propose we find another way to
close this gap asap as it would seem to be urgent in the context of getting the
CVP going.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Opening the nomination period for the TSC Chair election

2017-09-22 Thread Tim Irnich
Dear TSC,

I would like to nominate for the TSC chair position.

A long time community member and contributor to OPNFV, my first contributions
were in VSPERF, later I became PTL of the SDNVPN networking project and more
recently as Ericsson’s TSC representative. Aside from project contribution I
am active in community health and development initiatives such as scenario
lifecycle and consolidation, and as a member of the C Committee including
Dovetail/CVP work. I am now ready to fully invest my time and effort in
working with the TSC to drive the OPNFV community forward.
I believe OPNFV is at a critical point at this moment. We have created a unique
baseline for defining open source based NFV, in terms of community, technology
and processes. Now is the point in time where we have to start managing our
deliverables more actively and start forming consensus around key APIs,
behaviors and characteristics, in order to fully live up to the ambitions the
project originally set out to. We have to turn our attention from the “how” to
the “what”.

If elected to the TSC chair I would focus on facilitating the following topics:
- Work with the TSC to guide our project through the community coalescence
towards the Umbrella project. I am familiar with and well connected to
OpenDaylight, fd.io and a number of other open source projects, and I want to
use this to help position OPNFV optimally in the Umbrella project.
- OPNFV scenario consolidation and lifecycle management, including related
aspects of CI evolution. We need to start coordinating use cases across our
reference platforms in order to maintain our ability to deliver.
- Explore and promote emerging use cases beyond the current data center focused
scenarios, e.g. edge virtualization.

Best regards,

Tim

Hi,

I would vote for having something similar to Yardstick [1] but centralized in
Releng with an easy python lib that enables functions like SCP things to/from
the deployed nodes.

For your third point, log collection shouldn’t be done at test case level. It
should be performed by CI after running the test tools, otherwise you can a
false negative when running those test on non-OPNFV installers.

Jose

Hi,

Just to highlight this, from a Dovetail/CVP perspective, the important aspect
is that there are no dependencies on OPNFV-specific resources/lib in order to
be able to run test cases against commercial non-OPNFV deployments.

Having to write an adapter for a particular commercial deployment before you
can run Dovetail is obviously not really an option. So, for tests which require
SSH/SCP access, we need to think about...

  * If the adapter can be parameterized, so that we can make it a
configuration option, e.g., specifying login credentials, source and target
directories, etc., similarly to Yardstick.
  * Reuse what Yardstick is using?
  * If the test case be parameterized such that it does not attempt to gather
logs if used for certification? (limited use, of course)
  *   …

Cheers
Georg

Hi,

With regards to Functest, you can run it on any OpenStack deployment as long as
you provide a proper RC file and meet the requirements on the jumphost (docker,
connectivity to the deployment, …).

However, in some cases, some test cases from feature projects require SSH
access to the deployment and to make things centralized, the deployment handler
was created [1]. This is a library that allows users to get the number of nodes
from the deployment, functions to SCP things from the nodes and some other
utils. The bad part of it is that it only supports Apex, Fuel and OSA for now…
unless someones volunteers to write the other adapters for joid, mcp, compass
osa.. This library might be used to extract the desired logs after
Functest/Yardstick runs in CI to place them in artifact repo and post-analize.

Jose

Hello,

StorPerf very much relies on knowledge of the installer to gather information
about the block storage underlay. For example, the number of Ceph nodes, or
even Ceph vs. LVM, is very relevant to the final report. I also wish there
were an installer agnostic method of collecting this information as right now I
keep that code in the ci/daily.sh and other scripts.

With the new releng repository being created, perhaps it is time to start
moving some of the installer specific code there? I also see that being of
benefit when adding XCI support, as technically that would be yet another type
of installer.

Hi Srikanth,

As I know, some Yardstick test cases also need to login nodes. Yardstick uses a

You can refer to

some examples.
Hope this will help you.

2017-10-03 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

Thank you all for your trust and support, it is a true honor to take the seat
that Tapio filled so well. Thanks to Tapio and Fu Qiao for making this a real
election – I take this as a key sign for a healthy community and a committed
membership. I am looking forward to the interesting challenges ahead and to
work with all of you to continue adding to OPNFV’s achievements.

All,

The TSC Chair election closed on Friday, and I'd like to announce that Tim
Irnich of Ericsson will be the new TSC Chair for OPNFV. Congratulations, Tim!

It is a testament of a healthy community to have three very worthy candidates
running for the TSC Chair election, so I want to thank Fu Qiao, Tapio, and Tim
for their nominations. We also had 90% of TSC members casting their votes...

Last but not least, I want to thank Tapio for his service to the OPNFV
Community in the past year as the TSC Chair. I especially appreciated his
efforts to check in on dormant projects and to encourage "mature" projects to
step forward for graduation reviews. A lot of these activities were behind the
scenes, but keeping tabs on the health of 50+ projects is important for
continued community growth. I know you're not going anywhere Tapio, so I look
forward to your continued contribution to OPNFV :-)

Thanks,

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Fraser Milestone definition - Particularly for New MS' like MS 4

2017-11-28 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Maryam, all,

Agree that the milestone definition deserves more explanation. Let us bring
this up in the release meeting - Dave can you add this to the agenda once there
is space?

In my opinion what you write below captures the spirit of the milestone but I'd
love to hear Dave's view. Another question would be how to prove milestone
compliance to Dave in a way that is easy to consume from a release management
perspective.

Regards, Tim

Subject: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Fraser Milestone definition - Particularly for
New MS' like MS 4

Hi folks
I believe we still need some clear definition on the meaning of Milestones for
the Fraser Release. While I understand that
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/SWREL/Release+Milestone+Description has been
deprecated - there are now new Milestones on the Fraser Release Page
(https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/SWREL/Fraser ) like MS4 Test framework ready
that never had a definition and doesn't provide me with enough detail.

Can someone please clarify what MS4 is:
1.(for example) Test framework ready means:
* - Test Framework features planned for the release have been
implemented
* - Code has passed code review and has been committed to the
associated project
* - Framework features have been formally verified by the test project
team
* - No new framework features after this date - only test case
development
* - ...
Thanks in advance
Maryam

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Draft OPNFV governance documents under LF Networking

2017-11-24 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Ray, community,

Thanks for sharing, this is a really good start for a certainly non-trivial
exercise.

Couple of comments and suggested changes:

  * 2.b.i: [nit] To avoid ambiguity we should clarify that we are referring
to the current TSC composition, e.g. by saying “…names as TSC voting members
[..] as of Dec 1st 2017”. URL needs to be corrected,
opnfv.org/about/governance/tsc
  * 2.b.ii: we should oblige ourselves to document the steady state solution
through a charter update rather than a wiki page
  *   2.g: [nit] “The TSC may elect…” -> “The TSC elects…”. If I remember
right, the Umbrella project will have a Technical Advisory Committee, to which
OPNFV can send one delegate. So I’d suggest to add to the end of the paragraph:
“…, and will represent the Project in the Technical Advisory Committee (the
“TAC”) of LF Projects.”
  * 2.h.vii refers to a function of “Series Manager” but the term is not
defined anywhere. Due to the reference to Sec. 7 I suspect this is some sort of
legal oversight role?
  * 8.a: why is there a need for an approval of TSC charter updates by LF
Projects? My assumption is this intends to ensure a review of intended changes
from legal/formal point of view. I would feel more comfortable with a “need to
consult” type of language rather than a formal veto right.

Best regards.

Tim

Networking

All,

As was discussed in the TSC call yesterday, attached are draft documents for
Technical Charter (essentially replacing current Bylaws) and TSC Procedures
(replacing current TSC Charter). In case you were not able to join the call
yesterday, Heather's overview presentation on both documents are available at
https://wiki.opnfv.org/download/attachments/2925933/OPNFV%20governance%20docs%20under%20LFN%20v3.pptx?version=1=1510667186000=v2

If you have any questions/feedback on the document, please let me/Heather know.
We'll also have an agenda item on next few TSC calls for further discussions.

Thanks,

Ray

[opnfv-tech-discuss] [SDNVPN] new timeslot for weekly meeting

2017-11-20 Thread Tim Irnich
Dear SDNVPN project members,

Please note that the time for the weekly project meeting has moved to 09:00 am
UTC since we currently only have participants from Europe. This is valid
starting from this week, i.e. there will be no meeting today.
I will send a cancellation for the old invite (Monday 16:00 UTC) shortly, but
please have a double-check and delete the old meeting manually if needed, to
avoid future confusion (these things don't work reliably over mailing lists).

Regards, Tim

[opnfv-tech-discuss] TSC meetings during the holidays

2017-12-12 Thread Tim Irnich
Dear TSC,

I would like to propose skipping the TSC meeting on Dec 26th and run the
meeting on Jan 2nd with a lightweight agenda and keeping it short if possible.
If anyone would prefer a different approach, please let us know. We'll take the
decision in next week's call.

Regards, Tim

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Gambia release themes

2018-06-12 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

Following up on the discussion in today's TSC call, here are the current draft
release themes that were initially discussed at a Plugfest session (Etherpad
notes) and then drafted by
Ray and myself the morning after. The purpose of this is to create visibility
and shared ownership around our main objectives for Gambia (notwithstanding
project autonomy of course) and to provide us with a basis to identify and
request appropriate funding from the LFN board.

  * Focus on Cloud Native & Edge stack design, integration & testing
 * k8s base artifacts across installers and drive common test criteria
 * Process/tools for Continuous Deployment of Cloud Native applications
 * Support for "middle-box" container networking
 * Diversify the Pharos spec to support "Edge Pods" in Pharos labs and
LaaS
  *   More sophisticated testing methodologies
 *   Long-duration testing
 * Observability testing (e.g. integration with OpenStack Vitrage)
  * Integration with additional OpenStack projects like Blazar (resource
reservation), Masakari (improved HA), and Vitrage
  * Continued evolution of OPNFV Verified Program (OVP)
  * Development of a release process that enables Continuous Delivery

I'll keep massaging this based on further thinking and whatever input I
receive, and will provide updates in this thread. I'd like to invite everyone
(TSC or not) to review & provide input.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] [ONSEurope] Soliciting OPNFV submission ideas

2018-06-07 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

We have the CFP deadline for Open Networking Summit Europe coming up on June 24
[1], and I wanted to invite the OPNFV community to submit OPNFV-related talk
proposals. As you may have heard through other channels already, the conference
has been extended from 2.5 to 3 days in order to make room for additional, more
technical content, so that we should have good chances of making our work more
known.

It would be great to have a bit of an overview what OPNFV as a whole is
submitting, so I'd like to invite you to share your talk proposals and ideas in
this thread.

Thanks and best regards, Tim

Re: [opnfv-tsc] [opnfv-tech-discuss] Changes to JIRA permissions, and OPNFV LDAP groups

2018-06-26 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

Since we didn't manage to address this in today's TSC call, can I please ask
anyone interested to take a look at the below proposal and if no concerns are
brought up by end of Thursday EOB (June 28), we'll move ahead with this.

Regards, Tim

Subject: [opnfv-tsc] [opnfv-tech-discuss] Changes to JIRA permissions, and
OPNFV LDAP groups

All,

I would like to eliminate the per project group:
opnfv-$project-contributors

replacing it with a global group:
opnfv-contributors

This action will be transparent to users.

This is part of an effort to automate creating a new LFN project.

Going forward we would like project creation to be done via a specialized
gerrit review that when submitted will create all the resources need for a new
LFN project. (gerrit repo, ldap group, JIRA, mailing list tags, read the docs)

The changes to groups will effect JIRA only, as contributors can already +1 and
create patchsets for any OPNFV project.

Currently in JIRA submitters have the additional 'admin' permission And
otherwise, the jira permissions, listed below are the same for:
opnfv-$project-contributors and opnfv-$project-committers

Below is a summary of the changes I would like to implement.
I have added a short description of the permission for the less obvious ones.

Assignable User
Any opnfv-contributors

Assign Issues
Any opnfv-contributors

Close Issues
Any opnfv-contributors

Delete Issues
Only opnfv-$project-submitters

Move Issues
Ability to move issues between projects or between workflows of the same
project (if applicable). Note the user can only move issues to a project he or
she has the create permission for.
Any opnfv-contributors
-currently this only works if a user is a member of multiple opnfv-contributors
groups

Resolve Issues:
Ability to resolve and reopen issues. This includes the ability to set a fix
version.
Any opnfv-contributors

Schedule Issues
Ability to view or edit an issue's due date.
Any opnfv-contributors

Set Issue Security
Ability to set the level of security on an issue so that only people in that
security level can see the issue.
Any opnfv-contributors

Transition Issues
Ability to transition issues.
Any opnfv-contributors

Manage Watchers
Ability to manage the watchers of an issue.
Any opnfv-contributors

Edit All Comments
Ability to edit all comments made on issues.
Only opnfv-$project-submitters

Edit Own Comments
Ability to edit own comments made on issues.
Any opnfv-contributors

Edit All Worklogs
Ability to edit all worklogs made on issues.
Only opnfv-$project-submitters

Work On Issues
Ability to log work done against an issue. Only useful if Time Tracking is
turned on.
Any opnfv-contributors

Please provide any feedback that comes to mind I would like to present this to
the TSC.

Regards,
Aric

[opnfv-tech-discuss] [SDNVPN] Standing down as SDNVPN PTL

2018-01-17 Thread Tim Irnich
SDNVPN Committers,

I would like to announce that I am standing down as SDNVPN PTL. I feel that I'm
no longer able to fill this role the way it deserves given my other obligations
and would like to make room for someone that can dedicate more time.

I understand that Peri, who has been making significant contributions to the
project during Euphrates and Fraser, is interested to take the helm. If you are
interested as well, please let us know by Wed next week. If Peri remains the
only candidate, we will use a simple +-1 vote by the committers to approve.

Hi all,

Looks like Peri is the only interested candidate. SDNVPN Committers, can you
please respond in this thread with +1, 0, -1 to indicate your opinion on having
Peri take over the PTL role for the SDNVPN project?

Thanks and kind regards, Tim

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Seeking demo ideas for LFN booth at ONS

2018-01-26 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Brandon, all,

thanks for highlighting this opportunity.

Off the top of my head, a couple of ideas what OPNFV might be able to show:

  * LaaS: explain the idea, demo resource booking via the dashboard, show how
a pre-deployed OPNFV scenario gets spun up & handed over to the user.
  * New test dashboards: Explain the OPNFV test ecosystem, show how we use
the dashboards to visualize quality improvements and capability gains over a
development cycle
  * Use of XCI for upstream patchset verification/gating using another LFN
project as example (ODL?)

Just a starting point of course, and although I am aware that we basically need
to submit ideas today, I’d assume putting together a rough proposal should
still be possible. Any volunteers to drive one of the above topics or any other
ideas?

Should there be any other OPNFV-related proposals underway, I’d be grateful if
those could be shared in this thread for community visibility.

Let’s make sure OPNFV gets the visibility it deserves!

Regards, Tim

Subject: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Seeking demo ideas for LFN booth at ONS

OPNFV Tech Community:

We wanted to reach out and let you know that there will be space for a few
demos in the LF Networking (LFN) Booth at ONS. We've received a couple good
ideas already and are looking for a few more to consider. Our goal is to show
compelling uses of LFN networking project technology to solve real world
industry challenges. Demos that show cross-project elements (e.g. between ODL,
ONAP, OPNFV, FD,io), that map to a specific industry use case, and that are
endorsed by a service provider are preferred. That said, we have some room for
demos that highlight the innovative work and value-add from projects that don't
necessarily meet these criteria.

Please submit your demo ideas by January 26 by sending an email to
bw...@linuxfoundation.org. LFN staff
leadership will then review the options make the final determination which
demos can be accommodated. Idea submitters will be notified by February 2.

In your email describing your demo idea and requirements, please indicate who
the demo manager(s) will be. A demo manager is required as part of each demo
proposal and will be responsible for the following:
· Define the scope and storyline of the demo
· Respond promptly to requests for additional information
· Meet all requested deadlines
· Setup and test the demo pre-show
· Staff the demo during the expo hours (along with some other designated team
members to help share the load)
· Be willing to participate in media activities, e.g. video
· Take down the demo post event
ONS sponsors are of course welcome to host demos in their booths on the show
floor. Check with your sponsorship managers to explore these opportunities.

Please let me know if you have any questions and we look forward to hearing
your ideas.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] OPNFV meetup at ONS Europe?

2018-08-02 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

I'd like to request opinions on whether we should organize an OPNFV F2F meetup
adjacent to ONS Europe (Sept 25-27, Amsterdam). So far I assumed the
presentations we've got accepted for the conference program plus the
possibility for self-organized sideline meetings would be adequate but given
the increasing number of questions it seems in order to base this decision on a
community discussion.

What's your opinion, would you prefer to organize an additional OPNFV-specific
meetup day (some other LFN projects are planning for this)? If there's enough
demand this would certainly be something worth investigating.

Regards, Tim

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Leaving Ericsson, joining SUSE

2018-09-04 Thread Tim Irnich
Dear OPNFV community,

I'd like to announce that I'm leaving Ericsson as of Aug 31st and will be
joining SUSE as of Sept 1st. My new role at SUSE will be Program Manager
Developer Engagement.

My new employer is kindly giving me the required headroom to continue serving
as TSC chair for the next couple of weeks, until our upcoming TSC election has
been conducted (which is planned to happen during September), but my new role
will unfortunately not allow me to run for another term as TSC chair.

The day to say goodbye to OPNFV altogether is hopefully far in the future but
today I'd like to give a big shoutout to the Ericsson team that has done so
much for OPNFV and has always been a fantastic crowd to work with. Thank you
guys, I'll miss you, and keep stacking!

In terms of reachability, the transition will hopefully be seamless. My
Ericsson email will no longer be valid as of today, and I'll send a note from
my new email once everything is up and running at the other end. In the
meantime I can be reached via tim.irn...@gmail.com<mailto:tim.irn...@gmail.com>
or via Linkedin and Twitter.

Thanks and kind regards,

Tim

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] Wiki page for 2018 Goals

2018-03-13 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

I updated the wiki page based on today’s discussion. I’d propose to use the red
text as input to the TAC/Board request for OPNFV goals.

Ray if nobody objects by end of your day, I’d suggest to proceed like this. If
anything comes up during the night I’ll handle it during the European morning
before the TAC meeting starts.

All,

Following-up on an item from the last TSC call. I created a wiki page to
summarize the discussions we had on the Etherpad at
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/meetings/2018+Goals

Dave Neary, Wenjing, Tim, and I had to chance to sit down and go over this last
week at the Open Source Leadership Summit, but would welcome others' feedback
on this as well

Thanks,

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Project team meetings at ONS

2018-03-21 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi all,

It is great to see the many interesting OPNFV sessions planned for the
developer forum next week.

Can I ask all organizers of project team meetings or hacking sessions to
indicate the planned time and location (once known) to the Wiki page (thanks to
those who have done this already)?

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] OPNFV Plugfest - Jan, 2019 - Nokia Saclay-Paris, France #announce #plugfest

2018-10-22 Thread Tim Irnich
Fu Qiao,

my understanding is we'll end up having 3 Plugfests in 2019, since the
one in January is just a spillover from 2018 (it "belongs" to the Gambia
release). At least we have assumed two Plugfests in 2019 LFN budget
planning.

thank you very much for your contribution and leadership. OVP wouldn't

I'd also like to thank and congratulate the Dovetail community on the
second release, big accomplishment!

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] Discussion of OPNFV Strategic Plan

2018-12-04 Thread Tim Irnich
Hi Frank,

I attempted to make the slide cover everything we do, so that we have a
baseline to continue with (both in terms of communicating the projects
direction to the Board and externally as well as fleshing out the
details for ourselves). My thinking was that sooner or later we would
probably move to doing cloud native only but at second thought we
probably should not state it like this yet.

So maybe we should rather just remove Cloud Native from the headline and
say "Integrated reference stacks and DevOps platform for NFV and
beyond". I've also removed it from the second main bullet and added a
sub-bullet "Address state-of-the-art NFV and evolution to Cloud Native
and Edge".

Does this solve the issue?

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Infra Evolution: Labs

2018-12-07 Thread Tim Irnich
We seem to be forgetting that a significant fraction of our hardware
comes through donated Pharos labs. I think it is important to maintain
and evolve the possibility for companies to hook up labs with hardware
of their choosing (within the limits of the Pharos spec) to the OPNFV
federated labs infrastructure and run the OPNFV stacks on their hardware.

Particularly in the light of the increasing importance of hardware
accelerators, Pharos labs have the potential to enable OPNFV to become a
proving ground for integration of such hardware into the broader open
source ecosystem. This is a unique capability of OPNFV that, as far as I
am aware, exists nowhere else in the industry.

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] Discussion of OPNFV Strategic Plan

2018-11-27 Thread Tim Irnich
The way I understand Trevor's concern is that if we start spending more
time on packaging tools and supporting their usage downstream, there
will be less time for doing integration work and driving upstream
production readiness. Which is something I'm concerned about too.

Pretending that this problem doesn't exist isn't helpful IMHO.

No, I'm rather suggesting to make sure our understanding is complete
before we proceed. We clearly do not yet sufficiently understand what
exactly the decision is you're asking us to take, so we cannot proceed.
Let's continue to work on this until we have the required clarity, and
then decide.

Hi Aric,

Ok please resend the invite to Prem and me, I'll make sure those get accepted.
Diego is the inactive committer - I plan to ask him to resign according to the
process we have for that. I need to check if he formally became committer if he
never accepted the invite.
