Hi

Oracle 9.2.0.3
AIX 5L

anyone fail to start an instance after upgrading to 9.2.0.4

Everytime I try to start my instance which was working before the patch, I
receive 07445 errors.

Got the usual call raised but thought I would ask in case anyone had similar
issues.

Regards

Lee

RE: patch backout

2002-09-24 Thread John . Hallas

Managing patches with Oracle Applications is always a difficult task.
The various sites I have worked on seem to have the same general policy

1)Do not apply a patch unless absolutely necessary. A lot depends on the
type of patch, ie a simple fix is different from a big patch that can have
all sorts of implications.
2)Try and apply a megapatch or patchset wherever possible.
3)Also test beforehand. Invariably a copy of the database at the same
level is kept and a patchset will be applied and user testing will take
place. Focuse especially on areas that have been customised.
4)Proper testing requires extensive user involvement. This is costly and
has to be well planned. That is why applying a megapatch takes a bit of
planning. It is also why it is easier to justify the cost and work involved
if a number of issues are going to be addressed at the same time.
5) Minor, single issues patches can be applied (after testing of course)
where the risk of failure is small. The best way is to ensure that you have
a clean backup prior to application of the patch and therefore a good point
to recover to.

Hi List ,
What strategy you guys adapt for rolling back a database patch ( I am
talking about application patch not the oracle software patch ) . For
example if some table updates or some stored procs are going in .. how you
guys backout patch if something doesn't work after the patch . I was
thinking of taking export before applying patch and keeping it but that will
be time consuming ..considering data . Other strategy might be for each ddl
there should be an undo ddl and for each dml there should be an undo dml .
but that's complicates the life considering number of changes that might go
in patch . Any other ideas ??

Hi all.

Does anyone have the url for the ftp site to download the Oracle 8.1.7.4

Every time I click on the download button, it downloads the web page,

not the zip file.
So I am trying to download it via download accelerator, but need the

Any help would be great.

The last time I went to the patch download area on metalink, there was a new
link to ftp://updates.oracle.com. You can't browse this server, but you can
get a patch if you know the patch number and file name as
ftp://updates.oracle.com/patch_number/file_name. You can get these from
metalink. For instance, the Solaris 8.1.7.4 patchset is at
ftp://updates.oracle.com/2376472/p2376472_8174_SOLARIS.zip

No. First of all, you cannot uninstall patch 8.1.7.3 because oracle
hasn't provided
uninstall in any of the recent patch sets. You should just install
over the existing
8.1.7.4. The ONLY uninstall is the full, cold backup.

DO YOU MEAN RE-EXTRACTION OF THE COLD BACKUP TAKEN PRIOR TO APPLICATION
OF THE PATCH ?

If you decide
that the patch set
is not for you after, let's say, a week, you are stuck. Your only
option is to ask oracle
for one off patch for your particular bug.

QUESTION - STUCK = SINCE COLD BACKUPS TAKEN BEFORE PATCH APPLICATION WILL NOT EXIST ?

That is, generally, why I do not recommend plunging, head first, into
the new patchset as
soon as it appears. While waiting for two or three months, I monitor
RDBMS forums on the
metablink and released one off patches. Only when I am reasonably
sure that everything
is going to be hunky dory will I request my boss to authorize the
upgrade.

Oracle database patchsets for UNIX are cumulative. Applying the latest
patchset will include all of the fixes in previous patchsets for the
same baseline version. (i.e. The 8.1.7.4.0 will include the fixes in
8.1.7.3). Unless otherwise noted, you can apply the latest patchset

patches are supposed to be cumulative, so 8.1.7.4 should include all

Re: PATCH?

2002-04-29 Thread alan . aschenbrenner

Lisa,

Instead of a patch, I'd say it's more like a core dump. :-) Although,
a core dump usually frees up resources, but in this particular case
the resource load will only continue to go up over time. Maybe it's
closer to a forked process in either case, good luck and congrats!

RE: PATCH?

2002-04-29 Thread Fisher, Julie

That is to much. Since we're trying to create a new process, this is very
helpful.

A possible enhancement is -money. The default value would false since the
parent processes are often plagued by the undocumented options of
-childcare, -clothing, -food, -sports, -cars, and -private_school. Parent
processes would like to be able to change the value to true about 25 years
after the process is born. Pleas to ATT to add this option have been
rebuffed.

I am trying to install the 8.1.7.3 upgrade patch. Unfortunately,
somewhere down the road I have lost my oraInventory directory. The
installer says 'There are no patches to be applied. Metalink says that
the only way to get your oraInventory back is to reinstall the current
version of Oracle and all patches.

Does anyone know of a way to get the patch to install without the
inventory history? Or a way to rebuild the oraInventory directory? This is
a cloned database and I already tried copying the oraInventory directory
from another instance, but the files have the installation directory
hardcoded and the oraInventory files are binary so I can't change them.

If all else fails, I will reinstall Oracle. But that leads to another
question. I want to install the same components that are installed in
another instance (that it was cloned from). Is there a way to get a listing
of installed components? I ran the installer on the original instance and
selected 'Installed Products...' to get a listing, but when I saved it, it
gave me a ton of information, most of which was duplicates. How do I weed
through that listing?

RE: Patch installation

2002-03-11 Thread Baker, Barbara

Michal:
I'm not sure what the official answer is, but I would recommend recompiles
after each. I just went through this, and I know what a pain it is.
However, some of the patches I installed recommended a different level of
recompile (rdbms, util, netconfig, etc.). It seems safest to recompile each
patch at the level recommended. If there are any difficulties, you're not
left wondering which piece went awry.

BTW, if you have not already done so, I'd recommend going to 8.1.7.b
(patchset 1746764), and then applying add'l patchsets from there.

Good luck!
Barb

 Hi,
I am going to apply some patches on Oracle 8.1.7.3, Alpha OpenVMS.
I am not sure, if I have to rebuild desired products after installation of
each patch, or if it is sufficient to rebuild them after installation of
last patch. Is there any difference in installation (consequent rebuilding
of products) of patchset, patches and patch_basebugs?
 Thanks for reply.

RE: Patch sets

2001-12-13 Thread Kuijten, F. (Frank)

Denise,

I've installed patch 8 on both the dev.stations as the webservers.

I had to install the patch due to a bug with Reports not generating
PDF-files correctly.

Whether you have to install the patch on all systems depends on the reason
for installing it.
If it's a purely Developer issue (e.g. Dr Watson when using a function) then
no. If you have a bug concerning the runtime, then yes.

However having said this, I would personally recommend keeping all systems
in sync. It prevents suprises like Hey, it was running fine when I tested
it on my machine..

You don't have to regenerate forms/reports when installing the patch.

Regarding the iAS part : We're using IIS as a webserver. So I don't have
anything usefull to say about that.

Greetings,
Frank

I'm new here, so please forgive me if this isn't the right
 forum to ask this
 question.

We are deploying forms through Oracle's 9iAS Forms Server
 over the Web. In
regards to the Developer 6i patch sets available and running
 forms over the
Web, do we need to apply the Developer 6i patch set to the
 iAS server in
addition to applying the patches on the developer's computer?
  Do we need to
regenerate all the forms with the new patch set before we
 deploy them over
the Web? I've download the Forms 6i Patch 8 and it appears
 to also contain
patches for the iAS server. The statement on the readme file
 included with
 the patch is,
Under most circumstances, you DO NOT need to install
 any of these
patches. However, if you are instructed by Oracle Worldwide Support to
install any of these patches, please read through this README
 file before
starting your installation. I've got a TAR open with Oracle,
 but I haven't
been able to speak with anyone yet. If anyone out there has
 applied these
patches to either just the Developer 6i or the Developer 6i
 and iAS server
I'd appreciate any advise you may offer.

RE: PATCH confirmation

2001-11-30 Thread Baker, Barbara

From your patch number, I assume you're Sun/Solaris.
On a 3500 with 4 cpu's, patch took nearly 30 minutes.
On a 4500 with 8 cpu's, patch took about 20 minutes
YMMV

RE: PATCH confirmation

2001-11-30 Thread Baker, Barbara

btw...
When you apply this patch, the installer will likely tell you that the patch
needs an addtional 500 megs on your /oracle partition (on top of the space
already consumed by 8.1.7.0).

This is an Oracle faux pas.
8.1.7.2 takes about 20 megs more than 8.1.7.0 already consumed.

This also happens in patch 8.1.6.1.0 for Solaris 7 64-bit. Really annoyed

Thanks, what I thought is I installed the 8170, apply patch 8172, then
upgrade db from 816 to 817.2 directly. (not apply a 817 patch to 816 db)
Anyway, I think I will upgrade first to 817.0 and apply patch to 817.2.

then apply the patch release.

database from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7 then installed patch later?

 Thanks,

 Joan

I read the notes. It seems can go either way. I reinstalled the 817 base

816- 817, then apply the patch, or apply patch goes first? Maybe it
goes either way. But I'd like to hear some advice first.

Upgrade and then apply patch. (You could not apply a 817 patch to a 816 db
could u ??)

Re: patch question

2001-09-06 Thread JOE TESTA

Joan, check out the release notes for aix patches, if i remember
correctly:

8.1.7.0 - 8.1.7.1
8.1.7.0 - 8.1.7.2

8.1.7.1 - 8.1.7.0 - 8.1.7.2

to go from 8171 to 8172, i think you have to reinstall 8.1.7.0, run all
scripts, then apply patch and run scripts again.
