RE: OT - interviewing your superior(fun question)
I don't usually read the OT posts but I glanced at this while deleting stuff. Apologies if anyone already supplied the correct quote. What Al Gore said was 'While in the Senate I played a major role in creating the internet'. Apparently he was a major sponsor a author of the bills that transformed arpanet into the more commercially oriented internet. I used to have links that traced the evolution of that entirely truthful quote to 'I invented the internet' but dropped most of them after the election. I could probably track them down again in the unlikely event anyone was interested :). I think it was Wired magazine that first used the word 'invented'. ISO9000 because it will tell you whether the shop is methodical or not. Whether there are expected consistent deliverables or not. At the same time, because ISO certification is a double-edged sword, you will find out whether the manager is an empire builder, and whether they implemented ISO properly there. In some places ISO is just a huge paperwork exercise, à la Dilbert. In other places ISO certification can be used to prevent narcissistic careerist empire builders from circumventing company policies re. staffing allotments, resource distribution within departments, and whether the staff there is qualified to do their jobs or not. ISO can also be use to prevent overlaps in responsibility, and it can force managers to really take responsibility for their departments to walk the talk so to speak. Before I reincarnated as an Oracle DBA I worked in a pharmaceutical company's audit department and one manager absolutely refused to be specific about what each of his staff people's responsibilities were. He wanted to peg problems on any of them, from day to day, and not leave a record, so that if there ever was a problem he could delegate accountability to his subordinates. The euphemism for this sort of thing is a team player - when you see that on job postings, be wary. Anyway, I'm cutting down on the e-mails now. That should be a relief to some list members. The way I see the ISO900x stuff is this. If you say I kick every box before I ship it to a customer, and you do just that consistency. You are a ISO900x perfect company. Although consistency is extremely important, so isn't efficiency, credibility, as well as many other big words. Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if both are frozen. Christopher R. Ahh, but in ISO9000 land, you need to fill the paper-work out to prove that you have kicked every box before you shipped it like you said you would, and then ask the customer if they can attest to the fact that you have kicked the box. what this has to do with delivering the product is quite interesting. Then they wouldn't be ISO9001 certified, where design comes into play. If kicking boxes doesn't do much, why is it in the process and get rid of it. If kicking the boxes helps verify that packing procedures do protect the product well, then incorporate it into audit procedures. No need to do it for every box, though, a few per batch should be enough to get reliable stats. ISO9002 just covers consistent delivery and being able to track where problems occur so you can fix them, does it not? I was actually working on GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) standards, which is a bit different, but it was interesting to see people's reaction, depending on whether they were organized or not to begin with. Some people saw it as a positive thing, other not, most people just saw it as part of the work environment because they were, after all, trying to get FDA approval for something. I believe these things work best in areas where processes don't change often, like manufacturing. For research departments, forget about trying to document standardized procedures because people don't know what they will do from one day to the next, each day's results drive the next day's work. Also every few months, once a project is finished, they start another project which may have almost nothing to do with what they were doing before. RE: OT - interviewing your superior(fun question)
I agree GLP works best in a manufacturing/production lab. However even research labs can use GLP. It's a matter of how you go about your individual lab procedures. Yes, you do different procedures each day, but each day there is proper handling of reagents, cleaning of equipment, and running of standardized documented laboratory test procedures. These can all be part of the ISO process. If you are developing NEW procedures you need to methodically document each step so that it is reproducible by someone other than you. This thread has gone waaay off topic, however the principles mentioned above are also applicable to DBA and development work WRT new procedures and methodical documentation. He also included something like "in the Congress" in his statement, so it was pretty clear he was speaking about providing political support as opposed to technological innovation. RE: OT - interviewing your superior(fun question)
Let's not get carried away, here, Jim. Even if he said something perfectly reasonable in context, you can't deny people the right to obscure his words in a damaging way. That just wouldn't be right! It's like: "I opened a socket, but didn't accept any packets" from the networking class that Bill Clinton taught. hehhehheh -Original Message-From: Jim Conboy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 6:23 PMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: RE: OT - interviewing your superior(fun question) He also included something like "in the Congress" in his statement, so it was pretty clear he was speaking about providing political support as opposed to technological innovation. RE: OT - interviewing your superior(fun question)
Yes, the statement is different, but just based on the words in the sentence. Playing a role in inventing!= inventing. Odd thing about words: they mean something. Hell, I play a role in the community on this listserv. I am certain Jared and Esteemed Company would make the semantic mistake of thinking I AM the community on this listserv. Unless, of course, I were in Florida, where votes don't count. G JUST KIDDING!
