[OGD] hybrids
Guido, as a follow up to your last note and for those Aussies of on the list who may remember a cymbidium cross done in the 60's by Dos Pueblos Aust', C. Joyce Duncan. This cross produced many classic Green cyms ( for the time ) that were awarded and acclaimed for years. The parent are : Nicky 'Ku-ringai' x York Meredith. My father and I purchased pieces of both plants from Dos Pueblos in order to continue producing these great greens. (The plants were genuine by name and flower.) We crossed these ( both ways ) and sold and flowered ( along with many others )many hundreds of the resultant seedlings. The only similarity between the ? original Joyce Duncans and ours was that they were Green Cyms. All other features did not compare in any way. Therefore, if a remake of a cross is to be done, it will be a remake of a cross that I have done myself. I know variations from the original will occur but not the extent above. The problem is that there are some remakes in Paphs that one desires because of what has been produced in the past and unfortunately, one must purchase them in the hope that it may be correct. [OGD] bush snails
We had the same problem in a commercial Gerbera operation up here in Canada. The bush snails were causing irregular leaf growth and no flower production, looking much the same as a viral or broad/cyclamen mite infestation. I took some plants that showed more pronounced symptoms and drenched them in plain water. Within minutes, the snails were crawling out of the soil and up the leaf stems. In my experience, I would suggest using a slug and snail bait. We have a bio-friendly product up here called Ferramol, the Active Ingredient is Iron Phosphate. It AI is a naturally occurring mineral, used in many agricultural fertilizer products and is found in the soil. It is harmless to people, animals, birds and aquatic life. The bait actually drew the snails out of the soil, where they fed on the pellets. The label suggests that even a small amount of ingested bait causes the snails to stop feeding and within 3-6 days, they begin to die of starvation. Within 2 weeks, the plants were growing normally and we could not tell which plants had been infested. Hope this helps! [OGD] RE: Stripping the Woods
There's a person on eBay called Chase's Plants Prints from McKee, Kentucky that is apparently stripping the woods around them of Cypripedium acaule. They are offering them them in lots of up to 300 plants with fifteen lots available. That's 4,500 plants! They also appear to be stripping these woods of live moss also. This area is in southeastern KY about 100 miles from where I live. I think that this should almost be a criminal action as probably 90+% of them will die within the first year. Is there anything that can be done about such a thing? Their username says it all: kyatvrider (Kentucky All Terrain Vehicle Rider). This was on their eBay Store info: We sell moss for groundcover, pink lady slippers, southeastern gardens, ferns, blueberries, and dog woods as well as beautiful Animal Art Prints, My son whom is 6 helps me gather our plants and pick out the prints we sell. [OGD] Orchid removal
Eric Hunt ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) queried thusly: That question brought to mind one I've had for awhile - seems a good time to ask it. Is it illegal in any state to remove/collect *any* orchid, regardless of whether it is on public or private land? No, no; we're still living in America, still allowed to do a little with our private property. :-) On private land, it's a civil matter unless the species are federally listed or on a state protected list. So, then you need landowner permission, and, well, that's about it. On public land, it varies. Bureau of Land Management land is pretty much open range, and permits are cheap and easy- if they're required at all. Wilderness areas are much tougher- anything that leaves more than footprints requires so many permits as to be prohibitive. This was invoked with a species I'd LIKE to work with here in the desert (an orchid), but it's just not worth the hassle. National Parks and Forests are protected, unless you have a lot of money and own a drilling company or a thumper truck: http://www.sierraclub.org/ut/careforutah/p/DSCN4775.html Gives a whole meaning to Please don't step on the grass. But! If the species IS protected, then it becomes a patchwork. If it's state protected, then you need the state's permission. If it's federally protected, then you *might* need a mother-may-I from the feds, and almost certainly from the state. Plus, if it's federally listed, you can't move it between states without a pile of permits. And if it's federally- or state-listed AND on federal land- have mercy on your soul. I once caught some slob who sells these dig-em-ups on eBay selling Platanthera leucophaea, a federally listed species, as sold from his own property. Now THAT is perfectly legal UNTIL you offer them for sale across state lines. Then that's a big federal no-no. So, I dumped a copy of the auction to my hard drive, contacted the office of the US Fish and Wildlife Service nearest to the seller, and handed them everything I had. He still sells crap dig-em-ups on eBay, but no more platantheras. His feedback, last I checked, was private and pretty wretched as a percentage. Anyway- that's just what I've gathered from my exploits. Don't take my word as legal advice. I've only ever worked with one federally protected species, and it was an absolute breeze: one-page state application that got turned around in under 24 hours, private landowner permission, and- done. The six-hour round trip was the most painful part of the deal. Cheers, -AJHicks Chandler, AZ ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids
Re: [OGD] Stripping the Woods
At 08:17 PM 7/26/2004 -0500, you wrote: I guess it depends on what woods are being stripped. If it's private property with the owner's permission or their own property, then the removal of plants is perfectly legal in most states. If these plants are still part of the Paph, Phrag, Selenipedium complex, then they are on CITES Appendix I and wild collecting of them should be a violation of CITES as well as our ESA and the Lacey Act. Cypripedium are not listed as App 1, even though there are many rare true Cyps in China, and surrounding countries. Whatever the case, local flora are protected by state law, and most state laws allow collecting of wild plants on private property. Of course, I know you said this very tongue-in-cheek, George. ---Prem www.premdesign.com ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids
Re: [OGD] stripping the woods
I did send the following letter to Carl Harper and Joe Collins of the UK Office of State Entomologist/Kentucky Nursery Inspection: I just wanted to make you aware of a situation going on in your state that you should be aware of. An entity known as Chase's Plants and Prints in McKee, KY is auctioning on eBay very large quantities of Cypripedium acaule, the pink ladyslipper orchid. I'm not talking about a few plants either. They are offering up to 15 lots of 300 plants along with large lot quantities of 100's and 10's. They are also offering massive amounts of ferns and moss. I suspect that the majority of these plants are being stripped from the wild and sold without remorse to the gullible. They do not appear under this name in the list of KY certified nurseries or dealers that's on the website of the UK Office of State Entomologist/Kentucky Nursery Inspection. Would that violate KY laws 249.060 and 249.090? Their username on eBay is telling: kyatvrider (Kentucky All Terrain Vehicle Rider). As you probably already know, this orchid species while locally abundant in some areas, is quite rare throughout the country. It's also extremely difficult to transplant due to the symbiotic nature of the plant and a fungus in the soil. Failures to thrive over one year can exceed 90% after transplantation. They state right on one of their auction pages for a lot of 300 orchids, The difference in our plants and others is they are grown in the woods at our farm not in a nursery and they transplant and live so much better plus we will replace any plant that does not live up to one full year. This page's URL (link may wrap) is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=42218item=4315104383 The fact that ferns are mosses are also being auctioned in mass quantities means the possibility of erosion problems, not to mention the sheer rape of the woods that these are located in. Even though I'm not a resident of Kentucky, I live just over the mountains in Northeast Tennessee and greatly treasure our unspoiled woodlands and their diverse offerings. If these plants are not being sold legally, I would appreciate your investigation of this matter. At the very least, what they're doing is morally reprehensible and they should be enlightened by someone in authority. Here's the link to their storefront page on eBay. You may click on any of the items listed to get the details (URL may wrap): http://stores.ebay.com/Chases-Plants-and-Prints_W0QQsspagenameZl2QQtZkm It is possible as a state agency/law enforcement body to get their address info from eBay. [OGD] Endangered Species Act orchids
Prem Subrahmanyam [EMAIL PROTECTED] spaketh thusly: That's a very good question...as far as I know, the only time that there is intervention when it comes to private property in the US is for federally listed endangered species...for awhile, Isotria medeoloides was put on this list, but it is my understanding that it was moved back to threatened status. No other orchid is listed on the endangered list federally, although many states list various orchids on their own lists, depending on how widespread a particular orchid is in their state. Not quite. The US Endangered Species Act (ESA) lists Platanthera leucophaea (threatened), Platanthera praeclara (threatened), Spiranthes diluvialis (threatened), Spiranthes parksii (endangered), and Spiranthes delitescens (endangered). There may be more, but those are all I can remember off the top of my head. http://ecos.fws.gov/tess_public/TESSWebpageVipListed?code=Flistings=0 Of these, I've worked with Spiranthes delitescens. It has proven to be remarkably easy to germinate and grow from seed. We now have several hundred growing in sterile tissue culture- probably about as many or more as exist in the wild. [OGD] Re: Bush Snails
Jerry Hoffmeister asked about bush snails: I didn't have bush snails until I got bifocals. So, that's one approach, lose the bifocals. If you only have a few plants, you can submerge the the pots in water. The little stomachs with mobile homes will crawl out, and you can crunch them up. You gotta treat all pots, though. After getting bifocals, I used metaldehyde. I scored some Sluggit, and used it as a pot drench. Again, you gotta do all the pots, several times. Finally, you could repot everything, and I mean *everything* and put it into clean medium. If you use bark, you've gotta cook the bark or something, otherwise you'll get fresh infestation with every new bag of bark. ISTR one list member soaking his bark in an iron(??) solution to kill of the pests. Could be wrong on that, though.
