Do you mean – Fold each step on all the units before going onto the next step?

 

Anyway I think it depends. My experience is that usually all steps are done on 
the first unit, then a second unit. Then enough units to make a corner or to 
show how to assemble. Often the rest of the units and the completion of the 
model is left as an exercise for the audience. 

 

For myself, I find that I learn better if I do the same fold on several units, 
then go on to the next fold.

Beware..it is not of the same quality as in previous years.  The first thing I 
noticed is that the paper does not fill the (wasteful) plastic cube.  Made me 
suspicious. I figured the weight must have changed.  
Yes, the paper is thinner, the cut is rough and it feels of a lesser quality.  
If you were fans of previous year’s memo pads, just a heads up that they have 
changed.

Sunday (4/14)? About 10 minutes into the episode, Elizabeth is reaches for a
model on her desk. It is one color, could be an augmented octahedron made
with sonobe units (12 pieces). I'll try to capture a video later today.

Go to www.ebay.com and look for 'A4 guillotine paper cutters'. You'll find 
several for under $20 which seem to have metric measures as well as the A and B 
dimensions marked on the metal board. They are listed as 'heavy duty'. I 
wouldn't cut more than about 6 sheets at a time.
There are several currently listed. Don't just checkout the cheapest. 
There are some bigger ones in the A3 size for a little more.

Meenakshi:
A stellated octahedron can be thought of as a compound of two tetrahedra, where 
the spikes are smaller tetrahedra themselves ( 
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellated_octahedron).  The Sonobe constructions 
have spikes that are pyramids bound by 3 right isosceles triangles and a 
triangular base. In the case of the Stellated Octahedron, the spikes are bound 
by 4 equilateral triangles. The Sonobe type constructions in no way satisfy the 
criteria for a stellated solid ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellation).

But then, I haven't found a good name for those Sonobe solids. How about 
pyramidized octahedron or icosahedron?

I've seen the terms 'elevated' or 'augmented' used to refer to these types of 
structures. The pyramid sticking out from the base polyhedron does not need to 
be anything special, unless you are looking for the stellation.

Mark passed early this morning with Arlene by his side. We are having a
small gathering for close friends and family tomorrow, February 19th at 11am
at Arlene and Mark's house followed by lunch at a favorite buffet at 1pm.

[Origami] Origami at the Joint Mathematics Meeting Art Exhibit

I just returned from the annual Joint Mathematics Meeting. There are two major 
mathematics organizations in the US. The AMS (American Mathematics Society) and 
the MAA (Mathematical Association of America). Together they hold a joint 
(combined) meeting in January. There is a mathematical art exhibition which 
features mathematical art of all sorts. This year a middle high school teacher 
submitted a dodecahedral 11 hole torus based on Snapology. And it won one of 
the major prizes! His name is David Honda. I met with David and his work is 
absolutely amazing. I am including links to his winning artwork as well as to 
his blog. I did not know of him until about a month before the meeting.

Bridges-2017 will be July 27-31, 2017 and it conflicts with Centerfold. It
is a wonderful meeting. There have been origami works

"Origami to Go" initiative mentioning how it worked.
There is something I didn't understand. If you get to the table on the first 
hours of the exchange, there would be nothing on it. So do you leave your thing 
and get a voucher for picking something up later?

I believe you don't have to have an even exchange. Some may only take, others 
may only give. It is up to the individual to refrain from taking everything and 
leaving nothing! Unless it is at the end and the stuff has been around for a 
bit, and no one is taking it.

Pipe cleaner flower warning
I will also cross post on both lists

I absolutely love this flower and have been using it at public teaching for 
years. But the last time I taught it, a young boy did something that still has 
me very concerned. I had been allowing the kids access to the pipe cleaners 
that I use for the stems. One of them, picked up a pipe cleaner and stuck his 
brother in the cheek! All sorts of warnings went off in my head. Am I liable 
for any medical expenses? What if the parents sue me?. 

Anyway the parents were unconcerned and replied that ‘boys will be boys’ and 
they rough-house all the time.

I still use the flower for public teaching, but I keep control of the pipe 
cleaners. I fold the stem around the petals and turn the bottom end back about 
¼” so it is not so rough.

I may be overly worried, but I just wanted to let everyone know.

I've been asked to teach origami action models to a class of 20 kids, from 
2nd to 5th, for the space of one hour. I will try to bring along a helper 
if I can. May I have some suggestions for TWO models that many kids of that 
age range could likely fold in the space of an hour? Thanks in advance!

I get a great response from the hopping frog made of green 3x5 cards.
It's not an action model, but pipe-cleaner flowers are easy and a great crowd 
pleaser.
Yami's spinner is a good choice, also.

(probably about a dozen constructions, each in the hundreds of units). So I'm 
wondering, could you all suggest some modulars that hold together particularly 
well?

Tom Hull's PHiZZ unit is great, but I'm wondering what else is out there.

I would suggest that 'square' is important. For beginners plain white
printer paper, cut square should be fine. Colored, if available is even
better. I use a lot of wrapping paper. Cutting it square is important, here

A little clarification on where the St. Paul's Church is located.

If you were on route 30 going to the Borders, at Wynnewood road go the
opposite way (actually heading south-ish).  It will be less than a mile on
your left.

Mapquest shows it incorrectly across from the cemetery and would have you
make a right onto Athens.  The church is actually across Wynnewood from the
cemetery.  The entrance is on Athens road.  It is quite visible from
Wynnewood road.  When you get there it should be quite obvious.

compared to KNK Zing Which one might be more useful for paper (and also

What are the PROs and CONs? Considering the price craftROBO seems a bit
expensive compared to knk-zing.

I'd pass on a bit of news: that we origami artists have reached a settlement
with Ms. Morris, and the case is now closed.

And I'm so pleased that Robert seems happy with the result.  I was afraid it
would go the other way.

Upon first glimpse, I thought of an old modular made from Paris Metro Cards. My 
second thoughts, were about Snapology. I do not know enough about making 
snapology to be sure which method is closer to the truth. 
  
I was doing the Paris Metro Card model in the 1980 - 1990s. The diagrams were 
in the MFPP's first Metro Card book.

It appears to be based on Heinz Strobl's Snapology Technique, but Heinz is
not credited.  I first saw it in early 2012.  Neat project, but I wish he
had credited Heinz for the original technique.

I found one that sounds like this sometime early last year.  The date on the
file of mine shows it was made in 2008.  The dates on the models run from
1973 to 2001.  Most of the models are from the late 1990s.  Many are
hand-drawn.
