[Origami] A new Monthly Challenge for the CFC - Optical Illusions!

2024-05-02 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear creators and folders of the world,

I hope this email finds you well!
We have a new challenge for the new month. May`s challenge is about Optical
Illusions:
https://cfcorigami.com/challenge/optical-illusions

There are many great examples of that. The Origami Penrose Triangle, by
Alessandro Beber; the Skull and the Fish by Herman van Goubergen, and the
Arrow Illusion, by Tristan Miller, to name a few.

The CFC has a dedicated page for that, and every submission is presented in
the gallery, so by adding your new creations or, as folders, your
renderings of models, we can create a wonderful gallery on this topic.

As creators, you are encouraged to design a new model and blow our minds!!
You are also invited to upload old models to complete the collection.
As folders, you are welcome to add your folds, and please add full credit
to the creator.

You have to log in to the site to submit an image.

Thank you for participating!!

[Origami] Origami for the Blind - we need your help

2023-12-23 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear fellow folders,

I hope this email finds you well!

Lindy van der Merwe and I, Ilan Garibi, with the help of Michael Shannon,
started a project to create a hub for Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs,
thanks to Rikki Donachie for introducing me to this acronym) to enjoy
folding.

We aim to create the best conditions to allow blind and visually impaired
persons (VIPs) to enjoy paper folding.

The main idea is to incorporate all their needs into the CFC site
<http://www.cfcorigami.com>and to create a systematic way to match VIP
students with teachers (sighted or not).

What kind of help do we look for?

1. Teaching blind/VI people In one-on-one lessons, online or in person can
be highly rewarding. We need people to teach.

2. As with all folders, VIPs wish to fold more models than they get. We
need creators to work with us to help us create text-only instructions for
their own as well as for traditional models.

You can either teach or fold a model both can decide on, with a blind
person, who can then write the text-only instructions.

3. We would like to include instructions in different languages where
possible. Since the language must be accurate, translations to other
languages must be done by native speakers folders.

4. Blind folders are needed to test fold models.

5. Folding support via email or WhatsApp - Blind people often try their
hand with normal diagrams or video tutorials, especially if the text is
elaborated enough, but may get stuck at some point. This is where you can
step in and help them get over the obstacle! Be their eyes and figure out
the next step with them.

If you wish to take part, either fill out this form
<https://forms.gle/dd4RycCQpwmbocDF7> with all your details or write to
garibi...@gmail.com, and become part of our mailing list for this project.

Please share this email with anyone you think may be interested in this
project.

We thank you for your generosity!

Lindy and Ilan

Lindy is the creator of the Accessible Origami Project at
https://accessorigami.com, a blogger, and the CFC In Memoriam project
coordinator.

She is a blind origamist, living in Cape Town, South Africa.

[Origami] Origami for Teachers - Building a Community

2023-09-24 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear folders of the world,
We hope this email finds you well!

Dáša and I just published a book, Origami for Teachers, about how to teach
various subjects via origami. This is the first volume, and we wish to keep
it updated, as we always find better ways of teaching or folding the models.

We wish to build a community for all the teachers out there who bought our
book that will allow us to discuss, answer questions, and share ideas. On
second thought, we do not wish to limit it only to those who bought our
books, but to open it to all teachers.

We are going to have a mailing list and a Facebook group.

[Origami] CFC site - The Origami Groups` Map

2023-09-11 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear folders of the world,

I hope this email finds you well!

The CFC site (www.cfcorigami.com ) aims to unite the global origami
community around the world. This world stands on two pillars - the creators
and the folder organizations.

We already hold the most comprehensive and updated list of origami
creators, and now we aim to create the same list of origami groups.

We already created this page,
<https://www.cfcorigami.com/groups-organizations> with an active map. Yes,
we know the data is probably not updated, but this is the latest
information we could find.

If you run such a group or take part in one, please help us improve and
update the site. As a head of the group, you should have received an email
from us, with the link to register as a group admin. The admin will be able
to add images and information about the group, post, and manage the
group's events
directly from this profile. The events added will appear on the group page,
on the main CFC calendar/event list as well as in the CFC Monthly newsletter
.

As we aim to improve, please do not hesitate to send us your remarks!

If you wish to support the community, we are seeking a staff member to
manage the group section on the site. Fun fact - volunteering for the
public good will increase your life span! Please contact me directly about
that.

Finally, many thanks to Michael Shanon who keeps improving this site for
the benefit of us all!

[Origami] The Third Joisel Award - Voting is Open

2023-08-06 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear Origami Lovers,

The voting for the Third Joisel Award is open!

We have a record number of more than 200 nominations, showing some of the
most intriguing and artistic models created since last August.

Your choosing will determine the Popular Vote Award in all 8 categories.
You have to be registered at the CfC site
<https://www.cfcorigami.com/award-entries-2023> in order to vote.

You can vote on multiple models in each category, but you cannot give more
than one vote per model, so there is no point to log in twice and double
your vote.

Just remember, voting for all makes no sense, so give your votes only to
the best works!

To vote, you have to click on the model's image, and then click on the
thumb-up icon once. Now you can go back and continue your judging.

Voting will be closed on the 25th of September, and winners will be
announced in October. More details about that will come soon.

Best,

[Origami] A New Book - Origami for Teachers

2023-07-29 Thread Ilan Garibi via Origami
Dear folders of the world,

We, Dasa and Ilan, are extremely happy to announce our new book is out.
This is the second book we authored together, and with our combined 30
years in teaching, we present you the most thorough book for teachers (and
this is only Volume 1…)

This book is for teachers, allowing them to teach a variety of topics. Its
focal point is not the origami models, but the educational subjects you can
teach through origami. We use the windmill base to teach about the work of
M.C. Escher and a traditional cup to teach about the industrial design
process.

This book sums up our experience in teaching origami for the last fifteen
years, both for school students and design (Interior and industrial)
students. The lessons are focused on ages ten to eighteen but can be easily
adapted to younger or older students.

The book is written to support all teachers, assuming no experience in
origami whatsoever. The origami instructions are simplified and clearly
diagramed, or video recorded. Above that, we have full and concise
explanations to support the execution of the lesson.

Dear folders of the world,

I am happy to announce some new features on the Origami creator's site.

Origami Masters - our tribute pages to the great masters that are no longer

to create a complete list of the people who left a tremendous effect on the
origami world and give you the chance to get to know them better.

The Joisel Award #2 - Our annual award is running for the second year, and
nominations are open. If you have seen a model worthy of an award for its
technical achievement, or artistic values, you can nominate it on the site.

Resources - easy access to all the books and diagrams the creators added to
their profiles.

The Creators Map - shows the profile of the creators, including a list of
books, free diagrams to share, and how to contact them (directly, or
through the site). The main page shows the locations on the map of the
world.

The Origami Calendar - updated weekly, with all the known international
origami activities, free or paid, in-person or online.

Come and visit the site, whenever you want to see the faces behind the
name, ask permission to teach a model, or contact him directly (if the
creator chose to publish his email).

If you are a creator and do not have a profile on the site, please contact
me directly, at garibii...@gmail.com.

So mark your calendar: Saturday to Sunday, April 30th to May 1st, 2022.

>From the first days of origami, folded paper was meant to be used. Before
we had magnificent dragons there were models for rituals, holding salt, or
playing with the kids.

Our convention is dedicated to the practical side of origami. We have many
useful items, toys to bring a smile to your faces, and puzzles to sharpen
your minds.

The world of origami, like any other field of creation, can be divided into
two: the creations you are only supposed to look at, and the models you
must touch and use in order to enjoy them. The list is long: containers,
purses, bookmarks, earrings, airplanes, bowls, vases, magic tricks, paper
puzzles, and many more. It is time to celebrate the ingenuity of those
models, and make our lives a little better!

Our list of models, as always, is a mix of old and new, classic and modern
designs. We curated a list of 32 workshops by creators from all over the
world. Some of them will join us to teach the models, and some will be
taught by our team of expert teachers.

Please be aware that for the first time we are going to duplicate the first
lessons every day, and teach them again at the end of the day. By this we
make sure our times fit both Europe and the Americas!

America times: 12:00 to 22:30 (NYC time)

Europe times: 14:00 to 00:30 (Paris time)

[Origami] The Old Masters Project - looking for help

2021-12-15 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear fellow folders,

As sad as it is, no one lives forever, and I am worried that once an
origami creator is no longer with us, his legacy will fade away as well.
To prevent that, I am trying to establish a page dedicated to the old
masters of origami on the Community for Creators' (CfC) internet site. The
core idea is to have a page on each of the great names that will include
the story of his life, images of him and his work, a list of books he
published, and, granted permission, some diagrams of his, so visitors can
fold his models, and not only read about him.

In a way, it is like a wikipedia page, but without the need to meet the
demands wikipedia asks for, which with many cases are an uncrossable
barrier.

This is not a simple project, and I am unable to make it happen without
help.

What I seek is to build a team to research and collect this data. A
researcher will be asked to help write the text about the master, find an
image of his, etc.

I already have a list of old masters, which for sure is not complete, but
it is a good start. For most I also have who holds their copyrights.

If you wish to take part in this project, please send me a private message!

With my best regards,

[Origami] Geometric Origami COnvention - GOC1 - Invitation

2021-12-11 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear Origami friends,

Welcome to GOC - the first Geometric Origami Convention.

   -

32 workshops in two parallel classes.
   -

Learn from the authors of 14 books!
   -

A mix of new and classic models!
   -

Enjoy the Origami Lounge between the workshops!
   -

Recordings will be available for 6 months!

So mark your calendar: 29-30, January 2022.

Origami is a vast field for creators and offers countless genres and
possibilities. Usually, the figurative models take all the attention but
not this time. Whether it's a four-piece modular or a mighty Kusudama, a
one-sheet star, or a 32 units ring, the geometric designs are the stars of
this show!

The first Geometric Origami Convention is showing what is happening today
in this field. We collected eleven books that were published in the last
two years that we loved. From those books, we chose models to be taught by
the authors themselves. We will also give a review of each book, and tell
you why we handpicked it, so you can get a clear view of those books.

We will also give a preview of three future books, coming out during 2022,
Great books that really deserve your attention.

But new books are not the only source of models. We approached some of the
big names in this genre and asked them to join our journey. They will teach
new designs, most were never taught before.

And lastly, we will present some classic models, from great artists, to
complete the program.

The result is presented in the following booklet. A fair blend of old and
new, from all over the world, and from all kinds of geometric origami. We
highly recommend downloading the booklet from the event page on Mixily:

https://www.mixily.com/event/9103907373240656969

or download it directly from here:

For Paris time (GMT+1), use this booklet: https://bit.ly/3ow4il4

For New-York time (GMT-5), use this booklet: https://bit.ly/3y19SPM

your local time, or to add the events to your calendar.

We hope to see you at our convention!

[Origami] My 2nd tessellation book is out

2021-10-20 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear fellow folders,

I am happy to say my second tessellation book is out! After two years of
work with Franziska Schwarz, who did all the diagrams by hand, it is done.

you can find it here:
https://tinyurl.com/jzhjx5d2

It includes 29 origami tessellations, plus variations, all but two of my
own original designs. It is a bit more advanced than the first one, but all
are doable, and I believe, well explained. Origami Tessellations for
Everyone 2.

With seven chapters, I included some flat models (quite rare in my
portfolio) and circular models, but most are square-grid based, with a
volume, like the ones in the first book.

I wish to thank Fran for the extensive work and beautiful result!
Elina Gor, my graphic designer, did a great job completing the book in
time, just ready for the Christmas season!
Thanks to Maria Sinayskaya, Inbar and Alona Duani, my professional mini
team, Kathleen Sheridan, and Wojtek Burczyk, who helped make this book
better.

And now to the next project...

[Origami] The First Bookigami Event - Tuttle Origami Books and Kits

2021-04-27 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear folders,

We are glad to present to you our new event - Bookigami Tuttle USA.

Ever wondered what is an origami book like BEFORE buying it? Never thought
that reading a review would give you the whole picture? Always wanted to
fold a model first, to get the essence of the book?

This is exactly the reason we created this event, introducing books through
a first-hand experience. So stop guessing, fold and try before you buy!

The Event

We picked five titles from the huge catalog of Tuttle and chose a model
from each to fold along with you.

We are going to teach the five models through a Zoom session, present the
books, and tell you what their strong parts are difficulty level and all
you need to know before you buy it.

For his book, Marc Kirschenbaum will join us to teach his model!

The cost is only 5$, which you will get back, as a coupon to use on Tuttle
online shop, for any origami-related item. So, if you do like one of the
five books, this event will pay itself, and you actually get the five
workshops for free.

These are the books we are going to present:

Origami Fish And Other Sea Creatures Kit, Nick Robinson

Origami Masters Kit, Nick Robinson

Beautiful Origami Paper Wreaths, Noriko Nagata

Origami Animal Boxes Kit, Yoshihisa Kimura

Origami Dragons Kit, Marc Kirschenbaum

For registration just visit this page:

[Origami] What makes a great convention? The OI Origami Lounge

2021-01-24 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear origami friends,

The Covid situation forced us to rethink all we know about folding events.
Yes, nothing can beat actually being there, eating the local food, talking
to everyone, jumping from table to table, and interacting. Interaction,
this may be the key issue, isn't it?

We spent a lot of time trying to crack this puzzle, and we think we found
it!

In our first Origamisrael International Convention, we are going to
introduce the Origami Lounge!

Throughout the three days of the convention, 24 hours a day, the Origami
Lounge will be open as a separate room, besides the three devoted to
workshops.

The lounge will be full of tables, and once you are there, choose the table
you want and join it! We will have tables dedicated to Tessellations,
Modulars, Complex Design, and Easy Folding.

We can also open more tables, all you need is to ask! Do you want to have a
table for Spanish Speakers? Portuguese Folders? Action-Origami Lovers? Do
you want to teach a certain model? We can open a table for every one of you
(up to 45 tables, first come, first serve)!

Furthermore, after 23:00 (GMT+2), the Lounge will get a makeover, and it
will be a bar. If you want to join, you must hold a beer or a glass of
wine. Our DJ will play some background music, to allow for a late-night
folding frenzy!

If you want to join, make sure you download the 121-page booklet first,
from the event page on Mixiliy:

https://www.mixily.com/event/907326138628987

or download it directly from here:

Dear folders of the world,

I am proud to announce the CfC site is open to the public.

The aim of this site is to allow the community of creators to flourish and
to support creators in achieving their goals. One of the goals is to
connect to our audience, which means *you*!

Come and visit the site, whenever you want to see the faces behind the
names, to ask permission to teach a model, or to contact a creator directly
(if he chose to publish his email). You can also explore the *Creators Map*,
to see how many creators reside in your state.

Another great tool for you is the *calendar*, updated weekly, with all the
known international origami activities, free or paid, in-person or online.

We also have a map of all known conventions and the major details about
each.

If you are a creator and do not have a profile on the site, please contact
me directly, at garibii...@gmail.com.

As we aim to improve, please do not hesitate to send us your remarks!

The site is managed by a group of five: Wojtek Burczyk, Miguel A. Gañan,

The Program

The convention is divided into nine classrooms (three per day, for three
days), and every classroom tells a story. All the models (but the last,
after-midnight, hour) in this classroom will follow a unique theme.

Some of the themes follow the creators. Such are the classes for Grand
Masters, Tomoko Fuse, and Made in Italy.

Some follow the origami genre: Time for Action and Color Change are
self-explanatory, and so is Useful Origami.

We also have classes devoted to the paper to be used; by its shape - Don't
be a Square, or its type - Tant. The last theme, Impure, means the classic
golden-rules of origami do not apply. The starting point is anything but a
single sheet of square paper, and you will cut, or heaven forbid, even use
glue!

But this is not the complete story, no, no, no! This will be too simple for
us.

To make things more interesting, and to allow us to tell even more stories,
every hour has a topic, too! It could be Stars, Flowers, Pandas, Cats (oh,
so many cats!), Wings, Octagon from a Square, and Cats again!

Of course, each model fits the theme of its class! The first model in the
hour of the stars is *made by an Italian*, the second is not from a square,
as it is part of the *Don't be a Square* class, and the third will be an
action model, in the *Time for Action* class. Choose in the booklet which
class you will attend, and add it directly to your calendar with a single
click!

The teachers are Israeli folders (and Italian, and one is even from
Uruguay!), and we are all eager to have you with us.
The official language is *English*.

Let us help you forget 2020 with the best start for the convention season!

[Origami] The Test-Folder A-Team

2020-12-21 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear World-Wide folders,

I am seeking to build an elite group of folders, who wishes to help origami
artists to publish the best diagrams they can.

The core idea is to have a group of veteran folders, in each genre of
origami: figurative and geometric, who will test-fold and proof-read
diagrams of books before publishing them.

This team will get better and better with each book and will provide the
best possible filtering system to leave out all the mistakes and
hard-to-understand steps.

As for now, besides being the first to see the front line of the origami
world, the compensation is a free signed book, credit in the book, and the
gratitude of the authors.

If you want to take part in this group, please fill this form:

[Origami] Origami Modulars for Everyone - my new book is out!

2020-11-17 Thread Ilan Garibi
Dear Origami friends,

I am happy and proud to say my new book is out.
>From the last ten years, I collected 41 modular models, and succeeded to
convince the best diagrammer I know, Dasa Severova, to make the diagrams.
So many thanks for that!!
18 months of hard work are finally behind us, and the book is available now
on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Origami-Modulars-Everyone-Original-Designs/dp/B08NF36FFS/

The book is divided into four chapters: Flat Radials, Non-Flat Radials,
Six-Unit Polyhedra, and Other Polyhedra.
As promised by the title, the book provides a lovely variety of models on a
wide scale of difficulty levels, and the diagrams are so clear and vivid,
everyone can enjoy it!

The book conveys my (unique) way of thinking, with models like Inside-Out
Tetrahedron (who would think you can turn a tetrahedron inside out?) and a
cube that turns into a tetrahedron.
Some are action models, like the Magic Flower, and some are just georges,
if I may say so...
Most are my original designs, and some are the result of the cooperation
with Dasa, and the help of friends.

The book was edited by Sherry Gerstein, and Elina Gor is the graphic
designer, the same team from my first book, and they did a wonderful job!

So, if you wondered what could be the present you buy yourself for
christmas, this may be it. Go ahead and check it!
For now, the *Look Inside *feature on Amazon is still not available. You
can find it on my Instagram account: @garibiilan

[Origami] New TEDx talk - fourteen years of origami is 14 minutes

2019-11-14 Thread Ilan Garibi
Hi everyone,

I had the chance to tell my story on a TEDx event in Palo Alto two months
ago.

Although I talk mostly about origami, it is more about *change*, on a human
scale. It is about how I transformed since I decided to be an origami
artist. Everchanging, yet, it is still just me.
Just like origami, the sheet of paper goes through a major
metamorphosis but in the end - it is still the same sheet of paper.

Dear origami friends,

I am proud and excited to announce that my self-published origami book is
out!
It is called *Origami Tessellations for Everyone*, and it contains 32
original tessellation models of mine. In a way it summarize my ten years as
an origami artist, since there are not only diagrams inside, but also many
projects and real life applications I made from those tessellations, such
as jewelry, wall tiles and more.
I believe my unique way to teach tessellations makes this book truly to
everyone! I present a step by step guide for the single molecule, and then
a CP for 2 by 2 molecule project, as well as 4 by 4, with many tips and
explanations.

Re: [Origami] Permission question

2017-09-10 Thread Ilan Garibi
Copyright and teaching:

>From the USA law book:
*the fair use *of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in
copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for
purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, t*eaching (including
multiple **copies for classroom use*), scholarship, or research, *is not an
infringement **of copyright.*

Just to remind that the law is very clear about teaching - it is considered
as a fair use. The law simply says - teach whatever you like - including
giving multiple copies for classroom use.

Regarding the OUSA policy to ask permission from the relatives of a
deceased creator - I find this puzzling at the least. If a person dies,
the least we could do to honor and remember him and his work is by teaching
it. What kind of harm can we make if we teach his model without his
widow's approval? will she lose money over that? will she lose anything?

law, as well as customs that spread in a community should make sense, and
be of use. I think to ask a teacher to look for approval from the family of
a dead creator is (and I am sorry if I my words are too harsh - moderator,
you can mild down this line) bound to bury his work with him.

To make my point, I checked several books, and encourage you to do that
also - if there is no forbidding remark to teach the models included
without permission, and since the law regard teaching as a fair use, I
think OUSA, as well the community as a whole declare that for teaching
purposes one should not need to ask anyone for permission.

Come to think of that - what is the moral ground for a creator to
forbid anyone to teach his work? it's against the spirit of the copyright
law, and against the permission the law provides - how can you override the
law? I really dont understand that.

Best,
Ilan

question really pushed by button.
The next sentences are my opinion only.
For me, whenever you want to teach origami without profit, just do it.
Teach any model you like from any book you bought, or any diagram that was
published in a convention book you got. It is totally within your rights.
Do we really ask a permission from every writer to read his book in front
of our class? It doesn't make sense at all, just like with any other
creation. Do we ask permission from a painter to talk about his paintings
in class?

Moreover, at least in Israel, after a poet took the Ministry of Education
to court, for using his poem in a literature test, the law was changed so
any teacher, while teaching in any educational institute, can use any work
of art for his classes without asking for permission.

In a more personal note, I, as an artist, love to know someone teaches my
models. I feel honored and blessed by that. I gave, and give again, a
complete permission to teach any model of mine, give away any diagram of
mine to all your students, friends and family, including third nephews,
neighbours and strangers on the subway.

Origami is about sharing, and not to be afraid if you violate or not some
(disputable) rights if you teach a model.

Best,
Ilan Garibi
