[OSList] An Improbable invitation. A poem about a job.

2021-11-20 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Hello lovely space openers.

I wanted to share something. Firstly it’s about a job advert but also about how
stuff we do at Improbable has been changed by the practice of invitation.

First off I’m sure my wife Matilda won’t mind me sharing this story. She formed
and co-runs an organisation called “Mothers who make” it’s an online and
offline support group that grew out of one of our own open space events. It
supports the idea that we need to open more space into our work and life spaces
so that the the roles of both mother and maker are not separate or marginalised
by the other.
Check it out you might want to take part. You can join from anywhere in the
world.

https://www.improbable.co.uk/job-vacancies

Anyway a few years back Matilda put out a job advert for a Producer role at MWM
in a traditional way. Job specs, salary, responsibility etc.. she got at most a
handful of replies. So she decided to create an informal advert. An invitation.
She spoke from her heart and from her passion and vulnerability with real
honesty about what the job would be and what it would involve. Raw. She got 100
applicants. A real indication that it’s not just the sessions called but the
original invite that need passion and responsibility to give it grip.

https://www.improbable.co.uk/

So Improbable (link above) is a company that makes shows and opens space
wherever we can are currently looking for a new executive director. We put out
the formal job advert a few weeks ago and shortly afterwards we put out our
informal invite which is below..

Please spread the word and notice that we are hoping to ensure no one should
exclude themselves from the possibility of interviewing, especially if you
don’t work in theatre.

Yes this might be you.

Here is the Invitation:

https://www.improbable.co.uk/posts/executive-director-informal-job-ad

Here’s the text so you don’t have to click a link!

“A POEM ABOUT A JOB.”

An invitation to Join us. A poem about a job.

On our Gathering blog, https://www.improbable.co.uk/posts/the-gathering
you may have read that we’re looking for a place to belong and to create
belonging. We've been gathering clues, seeking out places, talking to people,
in our quest for a home for the company. We have also just put out a call for a
very particular, key collaborator - last week, we announced that Improbable is
looking for a new Executive Director.

Our Executive Director will, of course, be helping to take care of Improbable -
what it is, what it does, what its unfolding vision is, and what it may be.
However, one vital focus of this person's role will be helping to make The
Gathering, our home for Improbable and our practice, happen.

You can read the formal job ad here.

https://www.improbable.co.uk/job-vacancies

It does what job ads have to do – it talks about tasks, responsibilities and
qualifications. There is a heading called 'Person Specification' which lists
things like:

Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent project management and time management skills
Experience of line management and excellent people skills
An understanding of funding systems and track record of fundraising from a
variety of sources

Etc.

What it doesn't and can't talk about is spirit.

Spirit Specification.

So we want to do that here. Not to list the spirit needed by the person in the
Executive Director role because the specific thing about spirit is that it does
not belong to anyone. It exists between people. An understanding of this is at
the heart of the company's practice, that the brilliance of the work, be that
an Opera, an Impro, or an Open Space event, does not lie in any one person's
singular stellar performance, but in the atmosphere between the players, even
amongst the audience - between all the participants, it emerges. Much like in a
poem, the meaning unfolds from the combination of the words and their
particular clustering, their constellation.

Here then, below, is a kind of poem. A list poem. It shares something of who we
are, and of our spirit.

This is our 'Spirit Ad':

We are Improvisers. Performers. Directors. Writers. Artists. Facilitators.
Parents. Partners. Friends.

We are leaders. We are listeners.
We are tricksters.

We have spent our lives following our curiosity, trusting the unlikely,
believing in the quirky, the subtle, and the irritating, giving time and space
to all the improper things that are usually dismissed or discarded in a
creative process. We are also all these things ourselves: improper, quirky,
irritating. We are not always easy to live with.

We are often… Sad. Overwhelmed. Furious. Funny. In despair. In hope.
Determined. Devoted. Disgruntled.

We believe that Improvisation can save the world.
We are wildly ambitious and not attached to the results.
We believe in the power of vulnerability.
We are committed to celebrating and holding space for the marginal. We mean
those marginalised by race,

Re: [OSList] This list serve is antiquated big time

2021-01-29 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Hi Steve

There was a weird thing that happened to me with this list. a couple of years
ago for some reason on my computer it stopped displaying who messages were from
in their name, as it had done previously. So I had to hunt for their email to
see who it was from further in the body of the email. This definitely put
relationship One step away and meant i just didn't engage with the email as
easily as I didn’t engage with the person first. This may be a simple settings
thing in my computer that I haven't done. I love the simplicity of this list.
But it didn’t quite build relationship in the same way.

Best Phelim

2021-01-11 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Hi Romy et al,

Yes we at Improbable have been doing OS events using Qiqo (and a lot of amazing
support from Lucas!) We’ve done about 20 since the first lockdown from about
10-250 people. We’ll be aiming to do our annual D event at the beginning of
Feb and that will be around 500 people. The biggest and most costly challenge
is access support and navigating such thing as captioning and BSL sign language
support around break out spaces. Happy to be part of this call if I can make
the timing work.

Lots of love to you all

[OSList] Opening space online in times of Covid and Crisis

2020-05-30 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Hello Dear Open Space friends.

Over the last few weeks we at our theater co Improbable have been on a fast
track journey of learning how to open space for our communities online. This
has involved facilitating events for some of the many communities we are
connected to: Arts centres, artists support networks and the wider UK theatre
community. As you may know we’ve been opening space for 15 years at our Devoted
and Disgruntled gatherings in embodied space… www.devotedanddisgruntled.com

We have so far done a number of pilots and four public events. Each of these
have had about 80-100 participants. Our first events filled fast in 48 hours
and we are now scaling and scheduling another next Tuesday 2nd to accommodate
the waiting list of over 250 people. The theater community here is challenged
and needs urgently to have spaces where meaningful conversations can happen in
a more hierarchically fluid way as our theatre buildings and freelancers are in
crisis We are just at the beginning of this and there is much more to
discover.

All of this would not be possible without the incredible help and support of
this open space community.

I am and always have been in awe of the generosity of spirit that this group of
people has. Special thanks to Suzanne Daigle, Tom Brown, Paul Levy and many
others on the OS hotline and elsewhere forgive me if i forget. But most of all
Lucas Cioffi who has been incredibly supportive in helping us ratchet this up
as the need has been so urgent. Lucas has been ever present often in the
background, guiding us to find our way of using QIQO simply and effectively
with our own style.

We are going to do an interview about our events and use of Qiqo for our D
events for Lucas but I just wanted to mention a few moments in closing circle
which have been truly touching. Many of our participants have already been on
zoom for hours and in many meetings online in these weeks as we have had to
navigate lockdown from our homes.
Despite this people have reported such things as.. "This has felt like the
first time I have been out in a public space since lockdown." "This is the
first time where I have felt energised and hopeful rather than drained by an
online meeting" and "This is the first time I have been in a truly creative
space since all this happened."

We will be publishing the first three reports from last week at the beginning
of next week and will keep people posted as we continue to open space for our
theatre community which obviously considers gathering to be at the heart pf
their lives and practice and have cruelly had this possibility stolen by
circumstance.

I mention the generosity of the people here and of course I know this all
arises from the wellspring of spirit which was Harrison's original gift of
letting us know about what he and his fellow conspirators had discovered when
they first came upon Open Space Technology. From a tired and energised open
space friend

lots of love

Phelim

any of your future discussions. Do you have any plans for further online

Hope you are well

These are wonderful photos and really capture the spirit of the event. I wish
that I had been there. Great to know that people are gathering and opening

[OSList] 2nd Global Improvisation Initiative

2018-09-21 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Dear Open Space friends,

As many of you know our company Improbable have been on a big caper using open
space for the last 14 years in our Devoted and Disgruntled events and in our
practice of making theatre. It’s the culture of our rehearsal room and it’s how
we make shows.

If we work in an institution as part of making our shows we try and open a
little space here and there...

www.devotedanddisgruntled.com

My initial interest in OS was first sparked because I recognised that it was
essentially another name for that other practice which runs through my work and
life:

IMPROVISATION.

As far as I saw it OST was one big elegant Improvisation game. It just covered
some of the aspects of my life Improv didn’t always get a look in on.

With that in mind I’m aware that many of you also share an interest in
Improvisation perhaps you use it, teach it or are fascinated by it. So I wanted
to let you know about an international event Improbable are co hosting next
year.

The global Improvisation Initiative is happening in May next year and is an
international gathering of all those interested in Improv in all its
manifestations and applications. Two days of the conference will be held in
open space. A Wosonos of Improv if you will:

all details are here.

It’s open to anyone and there are still a few weeks left to get in any kind of
paper, presentation or proposal if you desire. You may have something to
propose around OS and Improv.. who knows?

Here’s the blurb...

“In sectors across the business and creative worlds, old models of cause and
effect are becoming obsolete. We are beginning to acknowledge the complex and
chaotic nature of the systems that surround us. Flexibility, fluidity,
spontaneity and real time responsiveness are the essential qualities needed for
this accelerated world. The future will belong to those who can improvise
best.” Phelim McDermott & Lee Simpson

In May 2019, the Improbable/iii will be co-hosting the Global Improvisation
Initiative – a global gathering of improvisers, coming together to work on the
theme of AWARENESS. It’ll take place at Middlesex University in London from
15th – 19th May.

Would you like to be involved? We’re currently inviting calls for proposals
from improvisers, teachers, makers, performers, researchers and students from
any field to consider the symposium theme of “awareness.” We are interested in
proposals across a range of formats, including performances, talks, workshops,
presentations, papers, panel discussions, making and craft-based sessions,
roundtables, or any other format you’d like to suggest. Expressions of interest
should be 150-250 words, and the deadline is Monday 15th October 2018. You can
read more about the GII and how to submit a proposal below. Tickets to attend
the GII will be available later this year.

You can read more about the conference and how to submit a proposal here

Maybe see you there...

Love

Dear friends, Space Openers, Mothers, Artists, and anyone else who may have
found either mothers or art to be an important part of your life..

I'm sharing here some exciting news about my wife Matilda’s ongoing project.
"Mothers who make". Matilda has been opening space for mothers who are also
artists and don’t want to undervalue either important role in their lives. She
has been doing this for nearly four years now. The sessions are incredibly
valuable for mums who often feel isolated and whose art gets pushed out by
circumstance and the world. The work has been so far unfunded but they have
finally secured Arts Council money to expand the network. They are also
crowdfunding to match the funding they raised. Do check out the video and share
if you get the chance. You Will also see our children Riddley and Tenar’s
skilful marketing pitch! Any support you can give however small helps them
build the network and reach their goal to make this a growing network of
valuable conversation and creativity.

[OSList] Opening space for the Beatles

2017-05-22 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList
Hi Gang,

As some of you may know.. Open Space is a totally embedded part of our creative
practice here at Improbable when we create shows. www.improbab
le.co.uk . I love how the
principles sneak their way into so many things we do now. Check out the images
for our project doing a show in Liverpool houses for the 50th anniversary of
Seargent Pepper ;) https://www.sgtpepperat50.com/events/shes-leaving-home/

Full festival listed here..

When encountering "space invaders" I've always found the sentence... "Sounds
like a great session.."

A very useful internal mantra for anger or antagonism. As being attacked can
freeze one with shock.

If pushed sometimes I say that out loud... sometimes I just play it in my head
and it helps ground me.

As MARSHALL Rosenberg said all anger is the expression of an unmet need.

Maybe a lot of anger is an as yet unexpressed session.

It could have been a session about the question itself..

Best regards,

Does anyone know why this is of how to change it.

Re: [OSList] A Gift from Phelim

2016-04-15 Thread Phelim McDermott via OSList

Dearest Harrison and friends,

How sweet of you to post this. It was a prompt for me to watch this again and
easy to track time as dear Riddley is well into his fourth year now! I’ve been
a bit absent form the List as I’ve been SO busy with doing my first love and
making shows back to back to back! A few weeks back riddled grabbed the
microphone and did a very good impersonation of me opening the space. A random
scramble of principles and law of two feet... totally comprehensible. I’m
working on doing one less thing.

I’m currently in Newcastle opening a new show this coming week: “Opening
skinners Box. http://www.improbable.co.uk/work/opening-skinners-box/
 10 great psychological
experiments of the 20th century …. and their perpetrators!

However D still goes strong. Last weekend we held two simultaneous OS events
one about the future of Opera and one for Theatre in Exeter. The reports from
our events have now reached over 2000
http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/reports/
and we are touching nearly 100
of our OS events archived. http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/archive/
.

the conversations continue. our next one is about science and art
collaborating.
http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/devoted-disgruntled-arts-science/

I still check into the list but get quite overwhelmed. I also noticed that it
was harder to reengage when the List stopped telling me who posts were from
when i got an email and this is probably why vibe been less present.

Every day in rehearsals we open space and we will continue to open space
wherever we go!

lots of love Phelim
