Re: Strange problem with the compass

2022-06-24 Thread David Lymn
Maybe Google is using wifi towers to create a compass bearing. This
software might only work when the phone is moving. You need to look at your
phone specifications to see if it has compass hardware.

2022-01-18 Thread David Delille
Hello

In OSMAnd, when I reached my destination, I can see a message on the screen.
The message is "you're arrived at destination" (or something like that).

I want to avoid this message. Is that possible ?

Thanks for help

This is a great addition to the program I think.

But does anyone have any idea how to remove the custom colors from the list

Re: Poi possibilities & problem

2020-05-31 Thread David
CP, i see your point with endless icons, my sugestions were for a few (i think
often used) extra travel icons like campsite hotel "national"park and swimming
hole.

And a few extra basic shapes (like triangles) for people to use for their own
"in-icon-sub-divisions", so there dont have to be four diferent campsite icons
and six differen swimming icons.

i don't know what tagging is, if you mean putting information in osm, that is
verry usefull for public info, like is there a museum here, maybe less so for
does this museum have a toilet, and verry debatable for was this a clean
toilet. (Although my wife thinks this is information we should all mark on our
personal map).

The way osmand is going with this poi feature makes it extremely usefull for
registering PERSONAL, non-public information, in my case mainly for travel.

But i see lots more posibilities:
For biologists marking samples in the field (red-animal-up trangle)- spotted
male wolf here; (red-animal-down triangle) female; (square) couple...
(Blue-flower-octagon) rare orchid population here, (blue-flower-square) only
single orchid...
For city scouts:
(Yellow-octagon-exclamation mark) repair this pothole a.s.a.p.
(Green-square-question mark) have a gardner have a look at this location in the
park.
As i say, endless posibilities.

Re: Poi possibilities & problem

2020-05-29 Thread David
Thank you so much.
I realy love what you are doing with the poi function.
When you fix the group color default, it would also be great to be able to set
a default group icon (and dare i ask a default group shape).

As an illustration:
I travel extensively in a motorhome and use poi groups to mark all usefull
places. Now i use brown for campspots and put in the name or comment wether it
is a "wild" spot, free official site, or a payed site with facilities.

A default camping icon would help differentiate campsites from hotels (also
brown) and rv dumpsites (also brown).
And a default shape would differentiate between payed, free and wild spots.

Swimming holes come in different forms too, rivers, lakes, hotsprings; (now all
blue) could have different default shapes.

Restaurant local or international food, now all white
Friends, family, co-worker adresses, now all pink...

The possibilities are endless.

Ps:
An upwards pointing and a downwards pointing triangle could also be usefull
shapes.
For instance:
Upward pointing with restaurant icon: realy good restaurant.
Downward pointing with hotel icon: realy bad hotel.

2020-05-26 Thread David
And ...
I am missing travel/leisure icons.
Like hotel, campsite, restaurant, supermarket/shop, park, viewpoint, swim spot,
beach, rv dump station, nature reserve, museum .

Also in de symbols group letters and symbols like ? ! # @ & € $ + - ✓ would be
nice.

This is no complaint, but constructive sugestions. I think you made a
wonderfull added feature with these new poi features.

Thanks for making this great app.

Poi possibilities & problem

2020-05-25 Thread David
The new poi icons and shapes are great. Thank you, I think I will use them a
lot.

But
When I create a poi and pick a different group/category from the last used one
it does not get that new groups pre-determined colour. Although the next poi
will. This feels like a bug that the standard poi colour will not be set until
after the first point saved in a group.

Question or Suggestion:
It would be great if it were possible to set a standard icon for a poi group.

Auto zoom

2020-03-01 Thread David
When navigating the zoom keeps reverting to the 200m scale when I hit the blue
button to snap the current position to the middle-bottom of the screen. There
is no auto zoom if I do not snap the position with the blue button, but then my
position keeps running off the screen.

I set auto zoom to off, and time to reposition on 'never' in the settings, but
that does not seem to help.

This way I only get a verry small part of the map on my 12" samsung tablet,
witch is a pitty, specialy while touring, I like to see what features are in
the few kilometers around me.

Is there someone who knows a sulution?
Manny thanks in advance

Thanks for the suggestions, sadly the POIs are neither very interesting for
the general public nor the license allows me to publish them in OSM.

I'll try converting to osm and then converting them to a map file.

Import many (100k+) POIs into OsmAnd

2019-12-02 Thread David Bengoa Rocandio

Hi,

I'm trying to display about 100k POIs in OsmAnd, I tried to convert them
into GPX, which resulted in a 250MB file (each point has some description
too), when importing into OsmAnd as favourites OsmAnd hangs and eventually
crashed with OutOfMemory, so I guess it's not the way to go.

How should go about doing this?

Regards,
David

Guru Maps & OSMand

2019-11-06 Thread David Thum
Howdy,

I checked out OSMAND and I love the maps. I've been using Guru Maps app
and love it. It has so many features including a folder system to file
away GPS tracks.

Is there any way to use the OSMAND Maps in the Guru Maps app? I have
installed other maps in the Guru app and the default map is a version of
OSM so it seems like it would be possible. Would be willing to pay for the
maps of course.

Thanks,
Dave

2019-10-19 Thread David
Thanks Harry
I might have mis-worded my problem, all I did was change the speed settings in
the navigation settings.
(I would not even know how to change the heuristic coefficient)

Minimum speed from 20 to 10 km/h
Standard speed from 45 to 33 km/h
Maximum speed from 130 to 100 km/h

I hoped to get more realitic driving time estimates for my little motorhome.

I programmed a extra profile for navigation.
For my motorhome I set minimum speed on 10 km/hr. Normal speed on 33 km/hr. Max
speed on 100 km/hr. All way lower then the normal car settings.
On a 2250 km roadtrip Osmand calculates a minnimal difference !!With the slower
motorhome having the lowest amount of driving hours!!

Re: OT: Android head units

2019-10-03 Thread David Remelts
Paul, here is a link to the ATOTO web site that gives some dimensions for
the unit:
http://www.myatoto.com/index.php?m=content=index=show=15=57

If your faceplate really is only 1.5U it probably won't work. You need a
full 2DIN opening for this unit. My truck had a 2DIN faceplate but the
internal (guts) of the unit was only 1DIN. I had to remove some sheetmetal
under the dash to get this unit in. But I knew that ahead of time based on
reports by others. The modification that I had to make does not cause any
structural integrity issues and does not prevent reinstalling the old unit
if I want to.

In my 2014 RAM 2500 the display is perfectly positioned, it does not block
the heat/AC vents and it does not interfere with my manual stick shift.
The screen does not have a polarized filter so polarized sunglasses do not
block the display (at least I have not had any issues with that). I also
like that it has a physical volume knob. In fact, it was one of my "must
have" requirements - I hate fiddling with on-screen controls when I need to
quickly increase or decrease the volume.

Re: Re-entering expressway wants me to backtrack

2019-10-02 Thread David Remelts
Hmmm... that's interesting. I will have to experiment with that setting.
In the rest area scenario, I think that might work if it simply indicates
that I am off-route and points back to the route (I think I can find my way
back onto the expressway without guidance ;-) As long as it doesn't do
the double back thing after I converge back on the original GPX route,
that's good.

However, I can envision a scenario where it could be a problem if it does
not actually recalculate the route to get you back on course. A couple
weeks ago we were going thru an unfamiliar city and they had the street
all torn up. I had to deviate from the route and the detour was not marked
at all. OsmAnd did an excellent job of rerouting me and getting me to my
destination.

So, like you said, it may not be ideal either way.

Re: Android Auto?

2019-10-02 Thread David Remelts
@GeneW, you've got an overwhelming array of options when it comes to
upgrading the unit in your vehicle. Personally, I opted for an Android
head unit to put in my truck for navigation while pulling our 5th wheel
trailer. With an Android head unit pretty much any app that you can
install on your phone you can install on the head unit so you're not
constrained by compatibility issues like you are with a proprietary system
like Android Auto. The head unit that I went with is the ATOTO A6 2DIN
A6Y1021PR. It has a 10" display that sits out away from the dash a little
ways and has a little bit of up/down/left/right tilt so you can get a good
viewing angle. I've had it for about 4 months and we just returned from a
4800 mile trip and I am completely satisfied with it. I set mine up with
Car Home Ultra as my home screen. There's an excellent tutorial on setting
up Car Home Ultra here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ATHzb5HSPRQ

I know this is a little off-topic for an OsmAnd forum but just wanted to
throw this out there as a hardware option for running OsmAnd.

Re: Re-entering expressway wants me to backtrack

2019-10-02 Thread David Remelts
I am using the same version of OsmAnd+ on the tablet. Also the same map
files. I suppose, as a test, I could use the tablet for navigating the GPX
route instead of transferring it to the Android head unit in the truck.
That's what I used to do before I installed the Android head unit but the
mount I had in the truck for the tablet placed the tablet on top of the
dash and I had problems with overheating the tablet if I was driving into
the sun. I'll let you know the results when I get a chance to test it.

Re: Auto Zoom not zoomed out far enough

2019-09-29 Thread David Remelts
Ik and Peter, thanks for confirming this. I really hate to give up
autozoom because it is really useful to have it automatically zoom in close
as I approach a turn. Maybe I'll play around with the auto-center time so
I can manually zoom way out to get an overview and then after a minute or
so have it automatically re-center the map at the default zoom level.

Re: Re-entering expressway wants me to backtrack

2019-09-27 Thread David Remelts
Bart, thanks for the tip about the "Pass along entire track" setting - I
will test that the next chance I get. I confess that there is so much
about this app that I don't know yet but the more I do find out about it
the more impressed I am with it. I am beginning to learn that when it
doesn't do what I expect not to blame the app but my own ignorance ;-)

But your comment about the difference between GPX and generated routes
makes me start to question my normal method of using the app. I still want
to use my tablet to design the route because it is so much more convenient
and comfortable to be sitting in the fifth-wheel planning the next day's
leg of the journey than it is to sit in the cab of the truck to do it. So,
maybe rather than saving the route as a GPX I should just save the markers
that were used to generate the route on the tablet, transfer them to the
truck and regenerate the route.

And, speaking of differences between GPX and generated routes: I have
discovered that if I want to reverse the route the GPX route will
recalculate the route based solely on the end points, ignoring any
waypoints that were used to create the original GPX route. Whereas a
generated route will retain the intermediate points, although they will
have to be manually reordered.

So, all in all, it seems that there are many compelling reasons to use
generated routes whenever possible.

Thanks again.

Auto Zoom not zoomed out far enough

2019-09-27 Thread David Remelts
In my navigation settings I have Auto Zoom set to long-range yet when i am
driving at highway speeds (65 mph or more) the scale at the bottom of the
map says .5 miles. In fact, it did not seem to make any difference at all
when I switched it from the default "mid-range" to "long-range". This does
not really seem very "long-range" to me.

I am curious to know if this is what others are seeing or if there is a way
to make it zoom out further at highway speeds.

Re: Re-entering expressway wants me to backtrack

2019-09-27 Thread David Remelts
I am quite certain that it was a GPX route. My normal method is to use
OsmAnd on my tablet to create the route and when I am satisfied with it I
will save it as GPX and transfer it to the Android head unit in my truck
which is running the same version of OsmAnd. Then I will load that GPX
file and start the navigation.

But, I think you are on to something. I did have occasion to generate a
route directly on the Android head unit in the truck and ran into an
unexpected detour on the route. OsmAnd did inform me that I had been off
the route for two tenths of a mile (or whatever) but it never tried to make
me go back and hit the points I had missed.

So, obviously, the next questions is: why do they behave differently?

Re-entering expressway wants me to backtrack

2019-09-27 Thread David Remelts

Say I am following a north-bound route on the expressway and I stop at a
rest area and then exit the rest area to continue along the route.
Obviously, I am rejoining the original route at a point further north than
where I left it when I entered the rest area. OsmAnd+ seems to realize
that I have missed some points along the route and thinks I really need to
go through those missed points. So, it will recalculate the route and tell
me to get off at the next exit and re-enter the expressway going south
until I have passed the rest area and come to the next exit where I am to
get off and re-enter the expressway going north again and continue through
the missed points on the route. If I ignore the instructions (which, of
course, I do) it will recalculate the route again and pick the next exit
for me so I can re-enter the south-bound expressway. Eventually, it will
give up and just continue along the original route without trying to
backtrack.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a way to eliminate this
behavior?

Possible to change lane guidance color?

2019-08-22 Thread David Remelts
I'm new to OsmAnd and there is a lot I have to learn about it yet but just
spending time reading posts in this forum has helped me so much already.
Thanks to the community!

I am wondering if there is any way to change the lane guidance colors? On
my Android head unit in my truck the lane I need to be in is displayed as a
kind of pale yellow and the other lanes are gray. I have to really look
closely to tell the difference - it would be better if there was more
contrast so that just a quick glance would be all that's needed to see
which lane is highlighted.

Re: Import of GPX files created by OSMAND into Garmin BaseCamp or Garmin Devices

2019-03-04 Thread David Martin
Agree. I have been looking for somewhere to ask OSMAND to look at the
export of GPX files. I *always* import GPX to Basecamp or to the (older)
Mapsource and neither can handle the GPS files that OSMAND produces. So
this 'feature' completely breaks my workflow. And by the sound of it, for
quite a few other people too. I am not knowledgeable enough to determine
what's broken, but presumably OSMAND developers do know. Presumably some
(new) GPX data is being output that older progs cannot handle. Please give
us an app option, or remove that data ?

Osmand has this info, because it uses it in the highness/steepness graph.

Just use one of the flags if you want to mark a place for a longer period.
That is where they are for, you can even flag several places.
I personaly think it is an improvement that the big orange blob does not stay

Contour lines map painfully slow

2017-07-23 Thread David P
I have come back to this app a few times over the past year hoping this might
have been fixed. It has not. Maybe there is a tweak to get it to work better.
I live in California. It's a huge state. I suspect the issue is from the size
of the downloaded map for this state.
When using the contour lines, the app pretty much locks up when tying to pan
around.
Is there a fix to this, maybe the California map can be broken down into groups
of downloads so this program doesn't have to load 1Gig of map data?

Improving: Markers import from Google MyMaps (.KMZ) to .GPX

2017-07-03 Thread david
Hi, first I'd like to show you something, and then ask questions how to
make it better.

-- Google MyMaps --> OsmAnd

One of the best things about OsmAnd is that we're able to stay offline and
navigate. A part of that should also be saved markers. Correct me if I'm
wrong, but we don't have an online, collaborative way to do this with
OsmAnd.

I did this simple solution needed for my project:
http://totalism.org/maps

It uses Google MyMaps, and offers .GPX endpoints.
It does this via a .PHP script that converts the native .KMZ, a zipped
.KML, to .GPX, , wrapping gpsbabel.
I'm able to open it in browser on my mobile device, and then "import" it as
OsmAnd markers.

The whole thing is a few lines of PHP:

http://totalism.org/E2H/kmz2gpx.php?LINK=z2VTgpJjSQEo.kYW_4SV5qz-U=Bologna,%20Italy

The marker *types*, however, are lost in the process.

this (marker color / ico / type)?

Re: Noob cannot get UK postcode search to work properly (Android)

2017-04-17 Thread David Leslie
Thanks for the info. I have now copied the obf files to the correct folder
(the same one as the World_basemap) and have been able to get the map to
display the poscodes. But If I search on a postcode, even under POIs, I
still cannot find many postcodes including G41 5PH. Am I doing something
wrong the way I am performing the search?

Re: Noob cannot get UK postcode search to work properly (Android)

2017-04-15 Thread David Leslie
I think I have possibly missed out a step for the app to see the obf files
I've copied into the /data/data/net.osmand/files folder. At the moment, I
tap on Search the Address then Postcode. If I type in, say, G41 5PH it
comes up with a few entries for G41 5.. but not the postcode I searched
for. Is there something I need to change in Settings or a different way of
doing the search from what I gave above?

I have OsmAnd installed on my Redmi Note 3 Pro running Android 7.1. The UK

Does anybody know what the new numbers are that are displayed below the
lattitude and longitude numbers on de screen that pops up if you long-tap on

The numbers look like this:

How to orientate the map during the navigation ?

2017-04-07 Thread David f
Hello everybody.

I'm facing a problem, i'm sure i can have the possibility to orientate the
map, to the driving direction when i use the navigation mode, but i can't
find the proper option in the config menu...

At the moment the map is all the time orientated to the North (i think),
and never moves (i mean the map's orientation nevers changes, but the map
is moving/slidding following my GPS position), i would like to have the map
orientated regarding the actual direction.

Can you please help me to find the right menu/option to activate.

I have the 2.5.3 version.

Thanks in advance.

Hiking / walking trails beyond 500m zoom

2017-03-01 Thread David
Hi,
I am currently in nepal, and on my map (walking setting) the small roads and
tracks disappear only when I zoom in from the 2km setting to the 5km setting,
and I am talking realy small trails (1 foot wide paths between the rice fields,
amazing someone put them in OSM). From the 5 km setting up they would be
actualy clutter up the map verry much.

When I say 5 km setting I refer to the measuring line at the bottom of the map
as I know no other way to identify the zoomfactor.

Hi. OsmAnd beginner here. Bear with me.

I was wondering if it was possible to upload my own shapefile/layer data

own personal/offline use? Obviously, I don't think anyone else would care

right direction.

I agree,I think they (the powers that be/ the programmers) do pay attention,
usualy good ideas eventualy end up in the program. And I am VERRY happy with
the way it is improving and improving.
But it looks like this point keeps being missed, it has been dicussed off and

Maybe the programmers don't see the problem, well, let me tel you: IT REALY IS
A PROBLEM.
So if you have some time, please make it so the "Do not zoom" option does NOT

A pointer with direction and distance to a "destination" seems like a nice

Re: OsmAnd vector format and rendering

2016-11-01 Thread David Taylor
That is great. From that I was able to determine that the vector fromat is
.obf a proprietary format by OsmAnd and it is very compact.

Would use of the .obf format be restricted to the GPL license associated
with OsmAnd?
I need to create a custom business solution that is tailored for a more
specific use and I can't use anything related to the GPL license.

If the obf format isn't licensed as GPL then I could create my own obf
parser and renderer that would work for me.
