2003-01-17 Thread J Stewart

Dear List, I just had a
wonderful follow through experiance - minus a birth! i have been
following this wonderful women thru since mid 2002,and she was due 7/1/03,
however went 10days over with her now 21month yo. her 1st
labour was a swift 6 hrs, so i had a hunch this one maybe the same!
she was booked into be induced at 8am fri 17/01, so of course it came
as no suprise when she told me she got a show in the morn of the
16th! anyway, got a call at 2.15am fri 17 [today!] that she was in
the b/centre with 2-3min apart, so i broke a few land speed
records and got in there at 2.45, the baby was born at
2.42!! the amazing woman ruptured her membranes at 12.20 and
within 3hrs had a beautiful 8pound baby boy! the thing
that amazed me was the look on the dad's face when i walked in, he
could not stop apologising!! he was dissapointed i didnt get there in
time!! i reasuured him that this was about himhis wife and baby not me and
to relax! but it was so beautiful to see how they wanted me to be a
part of this experiance with them 'because i had made the time to come
to all the app's" said dad! we really are lucky that there are
people out there so open and accepting to let students like us be a
part of their birthing miracles!
so
i have now been to 3.5 births!! take care, love
jess. ps - mum and baby [and dad!] doing fine!

 Hi,

Just wanted to put in a plug for the NACE conference in Sydney on Feb
 21st-23rd.

There are still registrations available. There's a great line-up of
speakers including Sheila Kitzinger (and it may well be Sheila's last trip
to Australia) Susan Maushart, Julie McCrossin, and Andrea Robertson

 The web-page is http://www.nace.org.au/
And the toll free number is 1800 814 611 (it is suggested you use this
number if you are trying to register.)

 Love, Barb

2003-01-17 Thread Jayne
Did you see how much some of them are paying their ob's? This is out of
pocket that they can't claim back from their private health insurance. Some
of them are having to pay a $1,000 fee (non claimable) on top of their
consultations and birth fee. I'd much rather pay that to a midwife anyday!

That is a really depressing website to visit!

Jayne

Was pottering around looking at Essential Baby website a few nights ago.
A
true education let me tell you. I'm really happy with the fact that I
have
had three births in a hosptial setting with a fantastic supportive GP, no
stitches, a total of 20 mins CTG monitering in the whole three labours
(got
rid of that pretty quick) and no vac ext's, forceps or LUSCS. Not even a
hint of induction for any - they come too early! (39, 37, and 38 weeks
 gestation). Needed the analgesia though.

Anyway, I'm stunned at the amount of intervention these women accept and
even want. Multiple ultrasounds, induction with prostin, synt is almost
'normal', and all before 41 weeks. There is a section on Birth Stories,
and
within the last week a story has gone up under the heading - my fun
homebirth (or something like that). I think it's really well written,
informative, and gives an insight into the committment and midwife care of
this couple. Certainly a change from the other stories.

Dear All,

After being told about this mailing list several times, I have finally got

I am a doula/birth support person in Sydney and hopeful Bach. of Midwifery

I look forward to receiving your emails and being part of the discussion.

[ozmidwifery] Re: Birth Matters

2003-01-17 Thread Jan Robinson
Dear Joy and Maternity Coalition Editorial Committee

I have been reading the ozmidwifery dialogue about the MIPP page in Birth
Matters with interest. I believe having the title of MIPP seems to
narrow the scope of independent midwifery matters to the Victorian arena.
Perhaps the MIPPS page could become the ASIM page so that it disseminates
the views and concerns of independent midwives from around Australia.

As the national coordinator of ASIM I would be happy to provide updates
related to our members' efforts to provide more community midwifery choices
for women in each state and territory.

Birth Matters is a great publication Joy, lets make it reflect the national
effort to advance continuous midwifery care for every woman.

RE: [ozmidwifery] Homebirth Story

2003-01-17 Thread Larry Megan
In Adelaide it is less expensive to birth with a private midwife than our
top obs, costing parents upwards of $1,500-$2000 easily plus the expensive
necessary special ultrasound they recommend and any other costs involved.
Not to mention the pedeatrician's fees.
Our midwives fees were the best money we ever spent.

[ozmidwifery] Research support request

2003-01-17 Thread Rhonda

  Dear List -
I am posting this for a friend of mine who is working hard to also
  promote change.
She has a limited amount of time to getthis doneasks that
anyone with first hand experience or professional knowledge of how
devastated women can be and how the opportunity to speak up about this
after a traumatic birth would NOT do "more harm than good". She
needs this by the end of January.

Here is her letter - Anyone who has the time to reply can post a
reply to her at the snail mail address listed. Thank you so
  much.
  Rhonda.

  "Dear Rhonda,

I basically need some letters from women who have had an emergency
caesarean saying that their delivery did lead them to feel distress
afterwards, and that they would have welcomed the opportunity to fill
out a questionnaire asking them about their true feelings - that it
would *not* have made them feel worse to do so.Currently, the
ethics committee (mostly men, with several doctors on board) is trying
to block my woman-benefiting research, by arguing that the increased
'distress' put upon women by asking them questions a month after the
birth is not outweighed by the potential benefits of the research
(which sounds awfully like an attempt to silence women's voices and
prevent change!).But I am arguing that not only are there huge
benefits to women overall from the research, but that it is not going
to harm emergency caesarean women, by asking them how they feel.
Rather, it might actually make them feel better!I know I would
have welcomed someone that gave a damn about how I really felt! And I
would have liked to have known that I was not alone in how I felt
too.I also would have been reassured to know that there were people
working to make things better for women in the future so that they
didn't have to go through what I did.So anyway, if you'd like
to write a brief letter (can be less than a page, or whatever you
like) for me to include with my reply to the ethics committee,to help
get this research off the ground, you can send it to me at:Ms
Robyn Henriksen,P.O. Box 552,Geelong, Vic. 3220I have to
send my reply to the committee's 'concerns' in two weeks, so if you
wanted to contribute, it would have to be within that time. Thanks for
  any support you can give,Robyn."

Re: [ozmidwifery] Homebirth Story

2003-01-17 Thread Rhonda

Yes well i think that cost needs to be a matter of priority - people
pay $1000's of dollars each year to fix their cars and houses etc so why
is it such a big deal to pay for your own physical and mental safety - (I
am refering here to paying a midwife! rather than getting cheap obstetric
  abuse!)

I am having to pay about $5000 to have my gallbladder out as I wont
go back to the hospital where i didn't pay a lot but had my son ripped
form my body. Hmm - Just can't bring myself to go back there even
though I have my own surgeon. I guess that saving a little on
George's birth is costing a lot more in the long run. (Not that I
was given any choice as I had wanted to pay my own way and was told I
could not. Which is a big problem as women are not informed of their
choices.) My husband also wont let me go back into that hospital and
has said - well we will just have to pull in our belts a bit and pay the
private fees even though we don't have cover.

Not long ago we spent$2000+ on a new motor for our car to keep
it going so I figure that I am worth more to him than the car! Nice
  to know really! LOL
