Hi,

This filter is a bit confusing to use (along with being poorly named since
it works with image data, rectilinear grids, etc.). When you choose the
Vorticity it returns the vorticity instead of the gradient field. When you
select Q criterion it returns q criterion in addition to the other gradient
quantity. It's on my radar to clean this up but I haven't gotten around to
it yet.

Ah, now it's clear :), thx

[Paraview] Paraview v 3.14, GradientOfUnstructuredDataSet1, vorticity

2012-06-06 Thread Ricardo Reis

 When using the filter

 GradientOfUnstructuredDataSet1

and selecting Vorticity, this result doesn't become available. On the
other hand Q Criterion becomes available under the right moniker...

 Is this expected?

I am guessing that Vorticity in your dataset is a 3D vector (which is
typical) and that Q Criterion is a scalar.

When you take the gradient of a vector, you get a 3x3 tensor (an estimate
of the Jacobian matrix, I believe). These 9-tuples are not as widely
recognized in ParaView/VTK filters as scalars and vectors so they will not
be listed in selection combo boxes for inputs. You should still see the
entry listed in the Information panel, though.

This filter, besides calculating the gradient, gives me the option to also
calculate

 Compute Vorticity
 Compute QCriterion

I'm starting from a velocity vector field. I would expect to obtain,
after the filter and selecting all options:

 - a gradient (here it gives only 3 main directions)
 - a vorticity vector field
 - a scalar field with QCriterion

Of these, the vorticity field is absent, even in the information panel.

About the error I'm finding I got checked this report in the gcc-4.6 bug
list.

 http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=47390

 So

 -Wl,--export-dynamic

will disapear. I have tried, has recommended -rdynamic (says it doesn't
exist) or -Wl,-export-dynamic but the version I have still hasn't the bug
mentioned in the above link solved.

I seems I have to revert to a previous compiler.

 Hope this helps someone.

And I am finding this error related to the paraview build:

is this an error with the current sources of paraview?

[Paraview] SpaceNavigator , builtin: (version 10.1)

 Hi

When using the space navigator, selecting the builtin: from the
pipeline browser, has soon has you give some input to it... it doesn't
stop moving for a long time. So it's trick and despairing to try to evolve
on the scene with the controller because it isn't fluid...

Any ideas on how to solve this?

 - with spacenav daemon off and starting the vrpn server

none works. The spacenav source brings a simple example program that
works. It's just a openGL cube that you manipulate with the
SpaceNavigator. Maybe the plugin should work with this instead of vrpn?
Just suggesting.

Anyway I will be grateful for any input, this device was bought with
paraview in mind.

Re: [Paraview] 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator and paraview

2011-11-07 Thread Ricardo Reis

Hi Nikhil

First of all, your input allowed me to get into the right track. It all
works now and it's great. Thanks

1 further question and more comments bellow. My use of Space Navigator is
to navigate my simulations and not to manipulate them. Something like this
was asked before in the list

 http://www.cmake.org/pipermail/paraview/2010-September/018757.html

Is this possible? To use Space Navigator to control the camera, user
movement and not to rotate objects? Or I must manipulate the all the
ensemble to make it seem like I'm moving through it?

On Mon, 7 Nov 2011, Nikhil Shetty wrote:

The reason we went with VRPN is because we were building a general VR
framework and needed the capability to support different devices (wiimotes,
gamepads, kinects etc). Developing a VRPN client plugin seemed like the
quickest way to do that and also our clients use VRPN so it was sort of our
way forward. But what you say makes a lot of sense but we are sorted of
limited by funding and the clients immediate requirements to be able to
support that. As a matter of fact the SpaceNavigator support in PV was a
community contributed patch to the original VRPN plugin. You are more than
welcomed to contribute native drivers support if you so wish to. I would be
glad to provide assistance in this endeavor if you choose to take it up.

After reading a bit about it I thought that would be the case. Anyway
spacenav seems to do more than 3D Connexion stuff. I think it can become
my pet project to contribute something to paraview code.

Anyway I will be grateful for any input, this device was bought with
paraview in mind.

As a side note, there have been quiet a lot of changes to the VRPN plugin
(its now called VRPlugin). We have a better framework to support multiple
VR devices (even tracked) from various VRPN/VRUI server sources and better
configuration mechanism to deal with these devices. However we haven't yet
ported and tested the space-navigator into this new framework. Its work in
progress and I will be sending out an email once we are ready with a few
more things (like documentation) in place.

Nice read, can't wait for the announcement.

[Paraview] 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator and paraview

2011-11-06 Thread Ricardo Reis

 Hi all

A SpaceNavigator has arrived in my desk and I have been trying to put to
work for paraview. I use Linux.

 I've found the wiki page

 http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/Space_Navigator

Compiled and instaled vrpn in my system. Updated my source code for
paraview using git and explicitly compiled the plugin for VRPN.

  VRPN_INCLUDE_DIR /usr/local/include
  VRPN_LIBRARY /usr/local/lib/libvrpn.a
  VRPN_QUAT_LIBRARY/usr/local/lib/libquat.a

I uncommented the relevant line from vrpn.cfg and started the server.

 When starting paraview with

 paraview --vrpn --vrpn-address=tracker0@localhost

 the result is

 Cannot open data file --vrpn
Application asked to unregister timer 0x6117 which is not registered
in this thread. Fix application.

I have also tried to go to the plugin managment and set the vrpn plugin
to autoload.

Anyway it is not working. Ideas?

 best regards,

 Ricardo Reis

[Paraview] Paraview, RC12, Version 02, 03, animation blows up

2011-11-03 Thread Ricardo Reis

 Hi

I've tried this with the latests versions of Paraview.

I have about 100 time steps in ensight files. It's a turbulent plane jet
gone bad.

I load it to paraview, I have turned off all geometry caching.

I set my countours (simple vorticity and pressure), click animation
and...

...about 40 time steps later it segfaults. I've seen it doing this
several times. I watched htop output and what I see is the Virtual memory
figure going up and up. When it's reaching almost 3GB RAM paraview bursts
into flames.

I'm trying this in a 8GB RAM, 64bit machine running Linux.

I can give my files for someone to test this. I don't understand why does
the memory usage increases non-stop.

[Paraview] paraview 3.11.1 segfaults in animation because out of memory

2011-08-11 Thread Ricardo Reis

 Hi

I'm trying to do an animation using paraview of several timesteps using
the ensight format.

Paraview seems to be increasing memory use with each timestep until it
reachs the machine limit and blows up.

I think memory use should be kept the same and arrays re-used no?

 feedback, opinions?

Sorry if the question is dumb... but is the workflow something like:

 - read geometry

[Paraview] ensight and parallel paraview

2010-08-05 Thread Ricardo Reis

 Hi all

I'm writing my files using the Ensight Gold format. I've also created an
ensight .sos file because I split my domain in several files.

Paraview version is 3.9.0, compiled from git

When running pvserver in parallel (mpirun -np 2 etc) the domain division
that paraview uses is completly different from the partioned files.

For instance, I have a 3D domain that is basicly a rectangular box. My
ensight files do the division like:

 +---+ +---+
 | | | |
 | 1 | | 2 |
 | | | |
 +---+ +---+

When opening the .sos file in paraview, paraview splits my domain as:

 +---+ +---+
 | 1 | | 1 |
 +...+ +...+
 | 2 | | 2 |
 +---+ +---+

Does it mean it isn't worthwile to split my ensight files?

 best reagards,

 Ricardo Reis

maybe not what you want and maybe of some usefullness...

In the xorg.conf you can put

Section Device

Driver nvidia
BusID PCI:07:00:00

VendorName NVIDIA Corporation
EndSection

I always had to start an xserver (if you have more than 1 GPU you can add
device and screen sections has needed to xorg.conf). I've been using this

Off course this needs to start X...

2010-02-25 Thread Ricardo Reis

When setting the opacity for a value different than 1 with a pvserver the
pvserver just crashes. This a version compiled from the CVS, running on a
debian machine with NVidia Quadro graphic board.

I've added in attach what what the pvserver spits while going down in

[Paraview] ensigth reader, simetric tensor error

2010-02-19 Thread Ricardo Reis

I've checked the Ensight Gold format and against the reader of paraview
and come to notice there's an error in the reader.

The ordering of values in the Ensight Gold format for a simmetric tensor
is:

SXX, SYY, SZZ, SXY, SXZ, SYZ

but paraview seems to be reading:

SXX, SYY, SZZ, SXY, SYZ, SXZ

 which is not correct...

No, it doesn't work like that. Your symmetric tensor isn't silently translated

conversion by means of e.g. the programmable filter in order to be able to use

through ens_checker and it reports everything ok. any ideas? Is something
broken? I can make the dataset available for try out (just email me).

[Paraview] compile from cvs, some binaries aren't copied to install dir

 VTK_USE_RPATH OFF

after make, make install the only binaries on the bin dir are:

 rr...@tenorio: /opt/paraview/bin
5003.0 $ ls
lproj pvbatch pvpythonpvserver
vtkSMExtractDocumentation

plugins pvdataserver pvrenderserver smTestDriver

but paraview for instance is the compile dir

I'm I missing something? I've been using the same options in ccmake for
some time without this problem...

However it does require you to have LaTeX installed on your system.

I would rather think that one that would use the feature would have LaTeX

Re: [Paraview] cvs error compiling, linux, glob

2009-08-20 Thread Ricardo Reis

On Thu, 20 Aug 2009, Karl Battams wrote:

I had the same thing a week-or-so ago. For me it was because I'd installed
Qt through 'synaptic' (on Ubuntu) and it wasn't a supported version. So I
compiled/installed the latest Qt from source and the GLOB error went away.
So check your Qt. Also, I think cmake leaves a log file that sometimes
sheds light on errors. That's perhaps worth checking.

It's possible but I would like to add this:

 - before the cvs version compiled ok (let's say one month ago)

 - after my recent co (I always do a full check out) it complained, before
the GLOB error, that my QT version was 4.4 and now it wanted 4.5

 - i've updated (I'm using debian), the 4.5 is gone, but the GLOB still
exists.

so, something changed in between, the error is located in this bit of
code:

IF(NOT Q_WS_MAC)
  FOREACH(qtlib ${QTLIBLIST})
IF (NOT WIN32)
  #INSTALL(FILES ${QT_${qtlib}_LIBRARY_RELEASE} DESTINATION
${PV_INSTALL_LIB_DIR})
  GET_FILENAME_COMPONENT(QT_LIB_DIR_tmp ${QT_${qtlib}_LIBRARY_RELEASE} PATH)
  GET_FILENAME_COMPONENT(QT_LIB_NAME_tmp ${QT_${qtlib}_LIBRARY_RELEASE}
NAME)
  FILE(GLOB QT_LIB_LIST RELATIVE ${QT_LIB_DIR_tmp}
${QT_${qtlib}_LIBRARY_RELEASE}*)
  INSTALL(CODE
MESSAGE(STATUS \Installing
\${CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX}/${PV_INSTALL_LIB_DIR}/${QT_LIB_NAME_tmp}\)
EXECUTE_PROCESS (WORKING_DIRECTORY ${QT_LIB_DIR_tmp}
 COMMAND tar c ${QT_LIB_LIST}
 COMMAND tar -xC \${CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX}/${PV_INSTALL_LIB_DIR})
 COMPONENT Runtime)
ELSE (NOT WIN32)
  GET_FILENAME_COMPONENT(QT_DLL_PATH_tmp ${QT_QMAKE_EXECUTABLE} PATH)
  INSTALL(FILES ${QT_DLL_PATH_tmp}/${qtlib}4.dll DESTINATION
${PV_INSTALL_BIN_DIR} COMPONENT Runtime)
ENDIF (NOT WIN32)
  ENDFOREACH(qtlib)

so, if someone would explain what this line of code does

  FILE(GLOB QT_LIB_LIST RELATIVE ${QT_LIB_DIR_tmp}
${QT_${qtlib}_LIBRARY_RELEASE}*)

maybe I could trace the problem to the debian package?

 many thanks,

2009-05-19 Thread Ricardo Reis

In this links you (and everyone else) can find the program ens_checker
which checks if your files are properly formated for the ensight layout.
It checks for binary and ASCII files. ens_checker.32 is for 32 bit
platforms, ens_checker.64 for 64 bit. Linux off course.

 http://aero.ist.utl.pt/~rreis/ens_checker.32

 http://aero.ist.utl.pt/~rreis/ens_checker.64

hope it can be of use.

 just do ./ens_checker.32/64 filename.case

these methods return 0 may help.

Hi

1 - I have rm -rf ParaView3 before doing the cvs checkout (in both
machines)

 2 - I compile with RELEASE and flags: -O3 -mtune=native

If you so wish I can compile with debug flags and try to check it. The
message appears on both sides (on client machine and server machine)

I can copy-paste the full message if you warrant so

I can also start a server here and you can see if you are able to
connect.

 Tell me what you prefer.

[Paraview] error in X86_64: libvtkalglib.so

2008-12-16 Thread Ricardo Reis

 Hi

Before it worked fine, now it doesn't.

I've checked out paraview from cvs in two machines, one 32 bit, the other
64. Both Linux, debian, testing.

I had done this before and everything worked fine. My options are MPI,
PYTHON, shared libs on, and RPATH OFF.

In the 32 bit machine everything works fine.

In the 64 bit I get this message:

  /usr/local/paraviewcvs/lib/paraview-3.5/paraview-real: error while
loading shared libraries: libvtkalglib.so: cannot open shared object file:
No such file or directory

Any ideas or needed output/logs to track and solve the problem? If I run
paraview from the build directory everything works fine, if it runs from
the directory were I installed it it fails with the above message.

 ideas?

No, I'm using a diferent dir and when I do make install he puts stuff
there.

If you just edit the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH in CMakeCache.txt (in the
build dir) and try 'make install' again.

I have this in my CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX

CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr/local/paraviewcvs.shared

so this is not the problem, it seems...

Should I atach my CMakeCache.txt ?

Everything is working fine now :) Last time I checkout (and it didn't

No, sorry, it escaped me (thread view can be tricky)

Rotating the points won't do it. I need that plane in a 3D context (ie, I
need to see it's relative orientation to the other 3D structures around
it), not just looking at it (2D wise).

What I can do, for this particular plane, is to write a structure grid
for it, then it will display ok. But what I would like to do is would be
to have the same treatment (write the same kind of files) for all planes.
I'll try to make some screenshots so I can better explain this.
