RE: recording CDA on a data disc

2005-01-09 Thread Blind Melon Chitlin
Hi, was wondering the same thing .
So I asked a sound engineer friend of mine.
The story is, the surface layer of the disk, i.e.. the data layer where
the information is burnt, is the same.
The difference is that if you buy music cdrws, some royalty money go's
off to the record companies.
So buy cdrw meant for data.

Subject: recording CDA on a data disc

Hi, this is Steve. I thought I understood a few months ago, but
now
I am confused again. Just to see what would happen, using Roxio Easy CD
Creator, I placed a data disc in the burner, chose music CD, and made a
copy
of a Cd from a .cif. I put it in my regular audio CD player, and it
played. There must be a difference or both data and music CDs wouldn't
be sold.
Could someone explain, please?

Re: Looking for XM users

2005-01-09 Thread mimi
Well, it's true the visual features are
not user-friendly for visually impaired,
but I love the boombox anyway. Nothing
can persuade me to throw away that
receiver or anything I like so much just
because the display cannot be accessed.
Manufacturers as you know, manufacture
for the masses. We are only a small
minority and if they made these items
completely accessible, we would have to
pay more for them. It does not make
sense but we are only a small part of
the larger listening audience.

There is a clock and sleep timer on the
Skyfi SA10 I have. But I don't
care. I can't use that feature on my
receiver, either. But I use everything
else I can access.

XM Radio

2005-01-09 Thread Jardata_Mail_Services
Hello List!

I recently signed up for the XM Radio Online Service. I have been able to play
a few stations online, but for the most part, it is a hit and miss proposition.
I emailed XM Radio with my complaints and asked them for a better way of
accessing their stations online. They say they are committed to helping all
of their customers and want their service to work for us all. I have one of
their receivers and boombox setups and the radio works fine, except for a
periodic satellite-reaching problem. I'm in an apartment and sometimes I lost
signal when the antenna falls or someone walks across the signal in another
oom. They could bet a better antenna for those radios. It would also be good
if they had a Direct TV type setup and we could use Direct TV or Dish dishes to
run our radios. I hear it works fine in cars. Maybe they have small dishes on
cars. The home system antenna does not have a dish, just a long antenna.

What is wrong with just having buttons or links that work upon pressing the
enter key or pressing the spacebar to reach a station or stream. They can
still have this linked to security password and user name set up. Or they
could offer a text only version for those who use screen readers (as a separate
page); then we could go there first and then have the links list right in front
of us and could click on anyone we please. There is only 65 or so choices.
I'm sure someone on this list would be glad to help them out along these lines.

I haven't tried the other service, but you must have a radio to have access to
their streams. I hear their streams are free to radio subscribers. XM Radio
should try this too. Or the other service should change their policy and make
their internet streams available for subscription alone.

Hi guys,
I have a program called Win-lame that encodes mp3s and ogg vorbis. The
problem is that I don't care for the interface, because you have to set the
settings each time rather then having presets. I'm used to Razorlame as my
mp3 encoder. Is there a good free ogg vorbis to wave converter out there

My personal stand alone yamaha burner will not recognize data cds. You
have to use audio cds, whether you want to or not. This, as I understand
it, is standard for these kinds of burners.
I still don't know what the difference between data and audio cds is, but
it applies to both cdr and cdrws as far as my burner is concerned.

Okay, I give up! How do I get started with Goldwave

2005-01-09 Thread Kathy Szinnyey/Fred Otto
Hi, Gang! Well, I took some of yous guys's advice and downloaded the
Goldwave shareware to make its acquaintance. Short of going over this
manual about a hundred times, can somebody direct me as to how to navigate
around and edit a file? I know how to record something but don't know how
to stop the recording, and I don't know how to work with the file once I
have it. With Soundforge and Studio recorder, I can start playing a file,
stop and start it, select stuff using braces or the shift arrow keys, but
that doesn't seem to work in Goldwave!

The manual seems to have some very nice tutorials but I can't seem to find
the very most basic information a totally blind person can use. Any help

manuals, etc., that would be great, too. I'm just totally bumfuzzled!

Re: Okay, I give up! How do I get started with Goldwave

2005-01-09 Thread Marijan Janev
Hi Kathy,
Here some basic Goldwave shortcuts:
ctrl+F9 = record
ctrl+F8 = stop recording
F4 = play
F5 = rewind
F6 = fast forwar
F7 = pause
F8 = stop
[ = start selection
] = end selection
shift+E = opens a dialog box where you can change the start and end of
selection
ctrl+T = trim the unselected parts
ctrl+s = save

So, as you can see, [ and ] work in Goldwave as well. In the beginning I
also had a problem to understand the concept of selection and moving through
the file in Goldwave because I firstly learned using Sound forge like you.
But you need only practise.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Marijan

Re: recording CDA on a data disc

2005-01-09 Thread R Q J
Hi Cris,
That can be said of any cd.
There are too many factors involved, in burning cd's,
to say with absolute certainty that one way is really better than another.
Prime example, I have been burning, erasing, and re-burning on the same
cdrw's,
for the last 9 months.
In that time, I have never been unable to retrieve any data from any disk.
On the other hand, I have had some cdr's, that I couldn't access.
The quality of the manufacturing process has slipped since cd's first became
available because they have become more popular.
In the beginning, the technology was new, and therefore, the quality of the
product had to be very high,
in order for it to get a firm hold in the market.
Once established, competition grew, and the manufacturing process speeded up
to keep up with demand
Like everything else in our modern society, quality suffers, when more speed
is added to the production process.
So, you just have to find a combination of media, and hardware that works in
your particular situation, and stick with it.

Kathy,

Before you start to record a new file you have to press
control plus n to open a new file. After pressing control
plus n you are given choices for the sampling rate you want
to record at, whether you want to record in stereo or mono
and other options. When you have selected how you want to
record tab to the OK button and press enter. You can then
begin recording with control plus F9 and stop recording with
control plus f8.

Hope this gives you more of an idea on how to use Gold Wave.

Hi, does anyone know where I can get Sound forge 6 and how much does it
cost? Second, is Sound forge shareware? I am looking for Sound forge 6
because I use windows ME and Sound forge 7 does not support windows ME.

I found it on EBay a few months ago. The person sold it very cheaply
and I was glad to get it since I don't currently have the funds for SF
7.
