Subject: Crackling Problems With The Creative X-FI Card?

I'm currently running into problems with the Creative Labs X-FI card. It
seems that when ever Windows makes a sound while JFW is speaking, there
 will
be a popping noise at the beginning of the sound. I'll also get a
 crackling
noise from JFW when arrowing fast through a list. I'm also getting this
crackling noise when I've got the Open dialog on the Screen in Sound
Forge, and I'm arrowing down through each item in the list to see which
 one
I want to open. Plus, when I tap the spacebar in SF, I'll get the
 popping
and crackling at the beginning of playback. Is anyone else having any
problems with this, and has anyone found a fix for this? I've been on
 the
phone with Creative, and tried everything they've suggested, but there's
been no joy in Muddville. I thought by going all Intel this time on my
 new
system for the processor and chip set, I'd avoid the problems of the
 past,
but I'm running into problems all over again. Plus, this card wasn't one
 of
the cheapest ones on the market. So any help would be greatly
 appreciated.

 Blessings,

 Brian

Thanks. Winamp does play some Windows Media files, but seems to have

Jaws sees it as a percent but it goes over 100%.

I think Winamp can play Windows Media formats if you have recent versions.
You probably have to change your file associations to keep built in players

I've been using the audio vault at www.cjob.com which lets you listen to
any previous hour of programing from the station within the past 60 days.
It uses Windows Media Player for streaming, and I don't appear to have any
other options. Does WMP ahve a seek-to-time feature?

I had a lot of crackling with Eloquence when I got this new computer and
it's onboard Realtek sound chip. This was fixed by two driver updates.
To
bad Creative isn't as good with updates. You would think by now they
would
 understand text-to-speech.

I understand it shouldn't make a difference if you are using AMD or
Intell.
It is the motherboard chip set that is more important. There is info

  Hi,

I get some slight clicks and pops from my Audigy 2 card when moveing
  quickly
through things or typing quickly but I think you can't get rid of every
single pop and click on JFW. I think part of it may be the low sample
  rate
of the speech and its being upsampled to 48khz for output from the audio
card. I tend to just ignore it. Now on my other system I have a SB
Live

and
  I
don't prefer it at all and will probably replace it with an Audigy 2

2006-03-14 Thread Brian Hansen
I've got the most up-to-date drivers available, and moving the card isn't an
option. According to the Asus motherboard manual, the slot I've got the

Firewire port in the BIOS to make sure that the X-FI is the only thing on
that IRQ.

I rarely encountered this audio garbage when ripping to the WMA lossless

began to think that there might be a problem with the media player or
the pc. But I've gone back and re-ripped some of the cd's I ripped
months ago, and they seem to be fine, so I'm hoping the bad discs wer an

I don't know but they probably can if you have the right codex
installed.

I've had good luck with WMA and their lossless format so I haven't

I thought error correction would fix that. Sad.

Do you have CDEX or Easy CD Extractor? One of those might do a

Re: Skype/mic help

2006-03-14 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

Thanks for the help. It seems to be working now (could hear myself when I
did the Skype test call).

I made Skype point to my sound card like you said (it was set on Windows
default device; though in Control Panel the default device was set to my
sound card so don't know whether that was the problem). I also undid the
changes I made from following the Skype sound set up guide - don't know
whether I misunderstood the instructions, but I had muted the mic and
unmuted the line in; that was when I started getting the error about make
sure you've selected the right device; so now I muted line in and unmuted
mic, and turned the mic volume up to the maximum and it works. Maybe the
original problem was just the volume not being high enough...I didn't think
to try that first!

Thanks,
Catherine

If you're having trouble making a skype call and you get an error
message about your recording device, it most likely means that you
may have the wrong one selected. go into your skype program, go to
tools, options and then go to sound devices. You should be able to
choose your sound card from there and have it point to a specific one
on your system. you can even have it set so if you get a skype call,
you can have the ring sound that happens come from your pc speakers,
but the output of skype will go to your USB headphones, because
Windows thinks of that USB Mic/headset as another sound device. the
other thought is that you may not have your headphones plugged in
properly. Make sure they're connected. Yeah I know, that's a pretty
obvious one, but you'd be surprised. Never hurts to check everything.

Hello,

Just subscribed to this list. Hope this is on topic, the problems I'm
having are to do with my mic/lack of understanding about audio
settings...wonder if anyone can help...

I recently installed Skype. At first when I did a test call where you
record yourself a message and see if you can hear it played back I
couldn't
hear anything being played back. Skype said I'd need to check my audio
settings. So I worked through the audio set up guide at
http://www.skype.com/help/guides/soundsetup_win2k.html
(I'm using Windows XP).

As far as I can tell I followed the instructions properly; I did recheck a
few things because really don't understand much about setting up sound
stuff, and pretty sure I've done what it says. But the problem now is I
can't even get to try and make a test call. As soon as I go to make the
test call I get an error and it says problem with recording device; please
check audio settings and make sure you have the right microphone selected.

I've tried a few times since making the changes I thought I was meant to,
and keep getting this error. Trouble is I can't remember what changes I
made, and I can't work it out from going through the set up guide again
because I didn't need to make all the changes it said.

As far as making sure I've got the right mic selected goes, I'm not sure
in
all the settings where that decision is made. Also, I know this sounds
crazy but I don't even know what mics there are to choose from: I have a
new computer and didn't take notice when I bought it of whether it has its
own internal mic; I thought I'm trying to use an external mic/headphones
set
I've got...but perhaps there's another mic somewhere and somehow something
I've done is makeing it all conflict...

As far as I know my mic is working properly - I haven't used it for ages
but
it worked last time I did.

I'm wondering whether I could tell people here exactly what settings I
have
in audio settings and see if anyone can help?

I could probably fiddle about and work out what settings I had originally
before going through the audio set up guide; but then I'll be back to
square
1 as far as using the mic goes...it'd be really good if people here could
help me understand what some of these settings mean, e.g. whether I've
muted
the right thing in audio settings according to Skype's audio set up guide.
And is there any other way I can test if my mic's working?

Anyway if that's ok, I'll describe my current audio settings...

Catherine

Hi There.

No expert on the scripts, but when you press the following keys; F4, F5, F6,
F7, F8 and F9, jaws announces; Play, Rewind, Fast Forward, Pause, Stop
Recording and Start Recording. This is very basic as the scripts read out
much more than this. In any case, the scripts are free so it's entirely up
to the individual if they wish to install them or not. Best wishes. Andy

Sonic Stage Replacement?

2006-03-14 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hi to the PC Audio list.
I have recently purchased what is refered to as a Sony Network Walkman style
MP3 player.
I have played around with the Sonic Stage software that is bundled with the
player, but have had no luck trying to figure out how to transfer files or
delete files from the player using this software.
It seems like a convoluted process, and of course, this player will not
recognize files transfered via Windows Explorer.
There was one program that I found for a Sonic stage replacement, but this
software also did not support keyboard navigation, only drag and drop
methods.

Anyone else have any better luck with this combination?

Which version of Sonic Stage are you using? There is now a version 3.4.
In general, none of the versions seems easy to use.

I think another poster to this list, Michael Lang, has had some luck in
using Sonic Stage.

As an alternative, you can use Real Player+ to transfer tracks to a Sony
player. You'll need to have Sonic Stage/Open MG Jukebox on your system.
The Real Player interface is a little clunky, but easier to use than
Sonic Stage.

If you need help with it, contact me off list.

Re: ripping with windows media player

2006-03-14 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Scott.

This is jitter and will be caused by either a dodgy disc or a dodgy CD-ROM.
You may reduce or remove the effect by applying error correction when
ripping. To do this:
1. Start media player
2. Go to tools and options.
3. On the devices tab, locate your CD-ROM drive and tab to properties.
5. Check the error correction checkboxes.

Your rips will now take longer but should yield better results.

Regards.

 Hey folks,

I've been using wmp to rip my music collection onto an external drive, and
for the most part I'm very happy with the process. However, on occasion I
will rip a seemingly fine cd onto the drive, and when I listen to the
ripped
tracks, there will be a clicking or ticking sound of a sort, almost as if
the disc might be skipping. This is perplexing when the disc, when
originally played, went through its paces without a hitch. Any ideas on
why
 this might be happening?

RE: Sonic Stage Replacement?

2006-03-14 Thread Ford Blackwell
Let me know if you need assistance. With Sonic Stage on your computer
and your dvice connected and on, you'll first activate the player, by
going to the Tools menu and following the promps in the Add Device item.
Remember that after running the Add Device, you need to shut down Real
Player and re-start it to enable the download. I don't think that's
obvious from their instructions.

The Add Device stuff can be a little tricky, but tech support has been
helpful in the past.

Re: Professional quality Ear Plugs For Concerts

Jerry, what types or brands of professional ear plugs did you sell?

I still haven't contacted a gun shop, but will do that.

I'm also wondering if Hobbytron, the vendor of several fm
transmitters, might have some. They sell a lot of hobby products,
including remote-control airplanes and cars. Maybe those things are
noisy enough to warrant earplugs, but I don't know that for
sure. It's at least worth a check.

Re: Professional quality Ear Plugs For Concerts

2006-03-14 Thread Mac Norins
Jerry,

They are called Sonic Two, from North Safety Products, I believe; I think
the subtitle name is Sonic Noise Eliminator and I had said that they were
from Norton, but I had a sighted person read the fine print, to find out
that it is North Safety, or something like that-- they are pretty common,
but a little hard to find!

You might be able to get high quality ear plugs at your local music
store. Musicians wear them all the time. I sold them in my music store.

Re: ripping with windows media player

2006-03-14 Thread Scott Blanks
No, these discs aren't copy protected. Also, I believe if there was some
sort of copy protection in place, it wouldn't allow any ripping to occur. I
can rip, some tracks just come out a little dirty, with some crackling or
ticking.

I rarely encountered this audio garbage when ripping to the WMA lossless
format. It happened with about five or six discs in a row recently, so I
began to think that there might be a problem with the media player or
the pc. But I've gone back and re-ripped some of the cd's I ripped
months ago, and they seem to be fine, so I'm hoping the bad discs wer an
 anomaly.

I don't know but they probably can if you have the right codex
 installed.

I've had good luck with WMA and their lossless format so I haven't
 installed
CDEX on the new machine yet.

I thought error correction would fix that. Sad.

Do you have CDEX or Easy CD Extractor? One of those might do a
 better
 job.

Re: accessible cd label software

2006-03-14 Thread Pam Drake
Dan,

Are these labels clear? I bought the CD Stomper but the labels
appear to be colored, and so would obscure the labels on commercial
cds. I'd love to label my cd's and I know people have used these
labels in their braillers, but we have enough sighted people looking
through the collection that I wouldn't want to prohibit them from
enjoying the labels.

yes this is correct. Some stations may broadcast their fm signal in
stereo, but may broadcast on the internet in mono.
So Replay AV is not doing anything wrong here.

Lowest common denominator. You broadcast in mono, you can reach more

Re: Sonic Stage Replacement?

2006-03-14 Thread Michael Lang
I can upload music from my HI-MD recorder with SonicStage: First I
select the device via a sub menu of the view menu. Then I select all
via the edit menu or by pressing Ctrl-a. Then I select something like
Copy to library from the extras menu.

I once downloaded something from my SonicStage library to my HI-MD
recorder accidentally. If I wanted to do that, I'd try to find the
right track with the play function (F6) and then use the download
function, which I think is also in the extras menu.

The anoying thing in SonicStage is, that one can not see the item list.
The program seems to behave like Ad-Aware, which also totally hides its
list of found Ad-Ware programs from the screen readers. Therefore, one
can often only use standard commands like select all, (Ctrl-A), to do
something with the list.
