I use my pen friend primarily to lable storage boxes, to summerize the
controls on in accessible devices, to keep track of when batteries have been
replaced on equipment and, of course, to label CDs.

I think that the most unique application I have is to get autographs at
live concerts. While other people in line get written autographs on the
recordings that they buy I have the artist create a lable for me in their
own voice.

But I do have a question. When backing up do you just copy the last file or
do you need to copy all 4 of them?

Thanks
Frank

get scrambled, since if you make a lot of labels you'll not want to lose

About as accessible as you can get.

The Controls for the Soundlink Mini and Soundlink III are laid out the same.

There are 6 buttons along the top and they are from left to right power, mute,
volume down and up, Bluetooth and Auxiliary.

When the Soundlink III or Mini is powered on the unit beeps when it has
detected a Bluetooth device that it can pair to.

Yes the Sony has a Speakerphone but many of worth bothering with, the only
one I've found which was any good was in the Yamaha MPX100 so if you're

Okay, so you've bought the thing so you can either take it back or make

Re: Another question about the Olympus DM5

2014-11-29 Thread Alex

Hi all,

As we are talking about this recorder, I have a dmdm-670 model.
Recently it won't connect to my computer, it will just say please wait
remote and nothing else happens, my computer doesn't even make the
device connection sound.
As i thought it was an issue with the software I tried reformatting it,
now I lost the voice.
Does anyone know how to fix this? First to get my voice guide backc and
second to connect it to my Windows 7 laptop?

Cheers.

Alex.

the recording timer, alarm and using the skedular or calendar easily.
Its truly the most accessible ever.

Hi. Well, where do I begin. I think I'm very spoiled because I have a
20gig Creative Zen touch mp3 player. This player is magnificent when it

Win7 drivers for the player so I can load it with music. I think it is
designed for XP users only. Giving I can't use it I was hoping the DM5
would have good sound reproduction and although it is reasonable at a push,
it doesn't compare to the Zen Touch. My disappointment was compounded when
I compared it with my mobile phone player which is superior to the DM5 in
sound quality. The DM5 spoken menus are inadequate. It tells you the
track
name but you get very little info of how many tracks you have on the
player.
For example if I decide to play music by selecting artist then it doesn't
give me the number of tracks in any particular artists folder and also when
I arrow up and down the list, the reaction time is very slow and that is
with speeding up the voice guidance. I'm inclined to just use my mobile
for
music listening unless I can get a better player that will give me very
high
quality sound reproduction. Oh, nearly forgot, I have to increase the
volume to nearly full to get a good level of volume, it seems the DM5
output
signal is a low one. It would seem to me that the player is truly meant as
a portable recorder and the music player function is an afterthought. This
player has never really been used, I'm just getting to grips with it. I
bought it a couple of years ago and it has lay in an equipment box ever
since and not been touched but maybe I'll consider selling it. Walter.

Re: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worthwaiting for - Pocket-lint

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
I pretty much addressed this in a question asked by another member a little
earlier, The Bose and the B&W are very good at displaying - in a sense of
sounds - the full spectrum.

Of all the speakers currently under discussion, which one provides really
good highs? My old ears ain't what they used to be, and so many of the
devices which I hear tend to go boom, boom, all bass and intermediate
frequencies. Please point me to something where I am more likely to hear
the highs.

Thanks.

The t7 sells for $349 in the U.S. on Amazon. Of possible interest is
the fact that the special aptx technology that it uses to improve the
bluetooth sound is not available on Apple devices and is apparently not
likely to be, since Qualcom owns the company that invented it.

Re: Penfriend Audio Labeler

2014-11-29 Thread Donald L. Roberts
From: "Vicky Vaughan" To: "PC Audio:

I use my Pen Friend for marking my CDS. No braille is shallow enough to play
in any computer or CD player that I have found.

Vicki, Are you familiar with the CD stomper? It is a device which comes
with square CD labels which are perforated in such a way that you can put
them in a Perkins or a slate to write the braille and then remove the
corners via the perforations leaving a circular label which is exactly the
size of a CD. You then place the CD on a circular platform after first
placing the adhesive side of the label face up. You then just press the top
side of the CD against the adhesive, and you have a thin but very legible
braille label on your CD. I used this thing for years and have never had
the adhesive cause an issue. I do agree with your note that adhesives at
least some of them will cause problems.
If you want more info about the CD stomper, just let me know.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi again!

You You may ask how do small speaker systems such as these manage to sound so
good and there’s no denying that they do? Well the answer lies in the Digital
Signal Processing used.

The Bose and B&w and pretty much got this down to a fine art and the Logitech
UE Boom which has been mentioned is pretty good though there’s a little
difference in how the sound is heard, the highs get a bit lost in the mid range
and bass but then again, the Logitech UE Boom costs considerably less than its
competition in the form of the Bose Soundlink III.

Some DSP effects are sensitive to the surrounding environments, take that of
the Bose Soundlink Mini which adjusts itself according to how loud the speaker
sounds and you can hear the DSP adjusting.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
That’s a very good question.

I’ve found that with the more expensive systems say from B&W and Bose all music
is very well represented whether it be classical, rock, wonderful smooth jazz,
thumping bass or whatever.

I think I know where you’re coming from and the well designed systems present
the music in a very well defined way for the whole spectrum whether that be
crisp highs, vocal mid ranges or the bass bottoms.

Hi all

Perhaps a silly question out of my own ignorance.

If you choose these kind of portable systems, would the kind of music that
you listen to make a difference?

Especially for acoustic music including classical music, the volume of the
sound is not that important but the clarity is?

Yep replying to this again, I have both Soundlink Mini and III.

I use them in different situations, if I’m reclining in my favourite chair
there’s nothing like the sound of the Soundlink Mini sitting on the chair’s

If I’m outside then I take the Soundlinke III out with me and put it on the

I still think the Bose Soundlink Air sounds better but then again its
slightly bigger than the Soundlink III, it really is a pity Bose
discontinued those.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
The Z@ is backwards compatible from N protocol so you’ll have no problems with
that part of it, I did a review of the Z2 for what its worth, an audio review
that is.

That system for $199 your money is truly amazing given that it only has 2 3.5
inch drivers to power it.

I think the reason for the price drop is that the Z2 is made in Chine but don’t
let that put you off, the quality is superb both in build and sound.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread Mary Otten
I like the sound link 3 ok. I heard it with the less expensive Bose
mini sound link, which was impressive for its size. But in the end, I
spent the extra $ because of the fuller sound of the 3. It can be a bit
too warm at times, and I think it definitely helps to have the speaker
elevated to close to the level of your ears when seated, rather than
having it sit, say, on a coffee table. But that's not surprising. I'd
love to hear the Z2, which now sells for just $199, and could double as
a dock. But I read that it does not use the 802-11N protocol, and I
would not like to drop back to the older G standard for the sake of
having the z2.

Just curious, what do you think of the Bose Soundlink III? I Wouldn’t be
without mine however I have found that placement can sometimes be critical for
good sound so its fun to experiment a little to see what a difference a few
inches over here or over there with speaker placement can make.

Re: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Absolutely right, if someone states that they don’t like something then there’s
hardly any point reading a review they post or even talking to them about a
product and yet its so easy to not like something.

I experienced this myself with logitech Headsets, I had one in 2007 and the
headset can only be described as utterly dreadful so I was very much against
Logitech headsets until people started talking about the H800 Wireless offering.

It took some convincing but I did buy one and - apart from the awful build
quality - I was impressed with it and still use it.

Yes, the H800 does have shortcomings as I said built quality isn’t good and it
would have been nice if Logitech had used a better Bluetooth system but its
still pretty good value for the buck.

Re: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
I guess its a matter od doing you homework when it comes to reviews and you’re
right about reviews, you read a few and you soon get the idea of who knows and
who doesn’t know what they’re talking about or what they’re doing.

When it comes to Short Wave radio sets for example, there’s some really good
review stuff out there and not just from those who are paid to review either.

Then again - having said all that - some of the offerings on the subject of
Short Wave radio sets come from those who ought to give the hobby up as a bad
job.

There’s a classic review that runs along this vein on the Sangean ATS909x and
I’ll try to find the link, I shouldn’t laugh I suppose but the review is
certainly side splitting stuff.

The chap who does the review tells us he’s been listening to Short Wave for
over 50 years and he knows what he’s talking about, he then proceeds to turn on
the Asangean ATS909X and examine the Short Wave bands.

As people who listen to these bands regularly today will know, they’re not as
populated as they once were so the chap - after not receiving anything much on
the Sangean - tells us that reception on this radio is dreadful and again he
knows, he’s been listening to Short Wave for 50 years!

Well now make what you will of all that but my only comment is that Short wave
today is certainly not the same as it was 50 years ago or even 20 years ago and
you’re certainly not going to receive anything much at 2 O’Clock or thereabouts
in an afternoon, that’s when this chap did his review and - as I said - I’ll
try and find the link to that again and post it.

2014-11-29 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I read that revue and it could hardly be considered unbiased. The guy
states from the outset he doesn't like B & W stuff so he is hardly likely to
give a subjective revue.
It's kinda like somebody saying they hate baked beans and then him being
asked to taste and give an honest revue and an impartial comment on which
brand of baked beans is best. At the end of the day if you are going to
spend a lot of money then you should always audition the equipment first and
do so on more than one occasion. The best option is to ask for a home
audition because even in the audition room of the dealer, the acoustics will
not be the same as your living room or bedroom. If the dealer is worth his
salt he should have a demo model or should be able to get one from the
manufacturer to let you listen to. I'm currently auditioning the B & W PV1
subwoofer. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now and have given it a good run
for it's money and like what i've heard and will buy one. If I had listened
to it in the store it most likely would have been through different
equipment and as I've said, different acoustics. For the most part, store
auditioning is great for narrowing your options until you find something
that might be to your taste then you could ask for a home audition. In the
end, it doesn't matter how many revues you read, your ears are the best
judge of what sounds good or bad to you. Walter.

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yes that’s true however it certainly wouldn’t sound worse than anything else we
have, as the reviewer said it still sounds pretty good.

So Amazon are selling the units? That’s a pretty good price, bet your life
they’re more expensive than that over here though I did get a pleasant surprise
with the B&W Z2, got one for $300 and that’s incredible value for money.

I think the other outstanding feature of this unit - apart from sound - would
be the battery life of 18 hours, don’t know any Bluetooth portable except the
Soundlinke III that would come anywhere near that, you get 14 hours from the
Soundlink and that’s impressive enough, about 6 hours from the Logitech UE Boom
but then again with the Boom I’m not at all surprised given the small battery
that thing has, again what the engineers at Logitech were taking at the time of
the UE Boom’s design one can only guess.

The t7 sells for $349 in the U.S. on Amazon. Of possible interest is
the fact that the special aptx technology that it uses to improve the
bluetooth sound is not available on Apple devices and is apparently not

In the review it said £300 but that’s English currency so you’ll have to do a

seem to be available in Australia yet or I haven’t been able to find an

Re: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hmm interesting but I really have to wonder what can be gained by comparing the
B&W with the T7? You only have to read the review I linked to and you’ll see
that we’re talking about 2 different systems, portable is a word that can be
applied to both sure but the B&W is bigger for one thing.

I have the Soundlink III as you do and I have 2 B&W speaker systems, the A5 and
the Z2 and I can only wish that the Soundlink III exhibited the quality sound
of the B&W Z2 even but then again, B&W products cost a little more.

As far as connection problems go? Well Bluetooth can be a little problematic at
times and it very much depends on your environment and what other sources of
radio interference may be around, Bluetooth was never intended to have a wide
range.

I’ve never had much trouble in connecting any of the B&W AirPlay devices and
there are around a Dozen Wi-Fi networks around my location now according to the
last scan I did but then again I did make a commitment to invest in the best
Wi-Fi routing device I could found.

The point I’m trying to make I guess is that there are so many variables and
circumstances when it comes to connection issues.

Okay, sorry, its my fault, I miss-read your message and thought you were
talking about B&O rather than B&W .

The B&W T7? I've not heard of that one so time to do my favourite thing
it would seem these days, type a few keystrokes into Google and see what
I can come up with.

Re: Wireless Speakers Comparable to JBL ON Tour

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Its actually slightly smaller too than the Jawbone Jambox but far better sound
and even more rugged.

I think both Jawbone Jambox and Soundlink MINI are around the same price, think
the Jawbone Jambox may have been slightly more expensive.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ah yes, there are some wonderful wireless speaker systems out there both in 1
unit and actual separate speakers and the good old names we know and love have
cemented themselves into the landscape.

I spoke of the Bose Soundlink III and Soundlink Mini, they’re smaller than what
you’re talking about.

I have a B&W A5 Wireless speaker system which is about the size of a kitchen
toaster but sounds as big as a pair of skippers connected to my Surround-Sound,
how something that size can fill a room is still beyond me.

I saw a review of a Keff Wireless speaker system and I’m going to make
arrangements to hear one in action next year having found a place using Google
which sells them.

These The Keff speaker system sounds similar to what you’re referring to, its 2
separate speakers but the whole idea is for people who don’t want their
speakers connected to an amp or receiver, they look like your standard large
type bookshelf speakers and you stream to them.

You’re also right when you talk of paying for good quality sound, even the B&W
A5 was a considerable outlay.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-29 Thread pete gurney
hi mary,

i've got two new bluetooth speakers a week ago both of which are fine one
is outstanding but costs more and the other has three diferent versions
each one stepping up in size.
both of these have built in speech that tells you when it's pairing and
when connected and the cheaper one even speaks what battery power is left.
there both made by creative, the dearer one:
sound blaster roar
has outstanding sound with 30 watts output from a unit that is roughly the
size of an A5 sheet of paper and 2 inches tall.
it has bass boost, the ability to expand the sound field, has a micro sd
card slot it's own built in music player and works as a speaker phone.
if you have an sd card inserted you can either play music that is on it,
press a record button to record memos or lectures and such like or if you
are on a phone call via bluetooth to the speaker a press of the record
button will even record your conversation which you can play back using the
buttons on the speaker.
it also has up to date codex built in so it can play uncompressed audio via
bluetooth or via the 3.5 aux in socket, it even has an alarm switch that
when activated a press of a button makes it work as a siron.
it works from both the mains or from the built in battery.
in UK pounds it cost £129 but i don't think it's much more in dollars
in the states.
the second is the:
creative muvo mini.
which i think is also known as the muvo 10.
this is about 7 inches long and 2 inches tall and deep.
it has a rubber coating and is suitable for use in bathrooms, on the beech
and anywhere outdoors even in light rain or where it will get splashed.
it's not as powerful as the roar but still has reasonable sound and works
as a speaker phone.
this one cost £50 UK pounds.creative do another couple of models of the
muvo with the rubber coating with each one being bigger and more powerful
and i think they are called the muvo 20 and muvo 30.

pete.

I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with
portable bluetooth capable devices. For reasons not particularly
relevant to this list, I won't have access to that speaker during the
school year, since it will be going to school with my spouse. So I'm
wondering about other alternatives, perhaps even some that might not be
as pricy as the Bose. I've just read about the B&W t7, which actually
costs more than the Bose. Then there are Braven models which look
interesting, albeit not much less costly than the Bose.

Since all my devices are ios, I could also use airplay, not necessary
to have bluetooth. What are people using and really liking in this
category?

Mary

Wireless Speakers Comparable to JBL ON Tour

2014-11-29 Thread Samuel Wilkins
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know of any good wireless speakers that have a sound comparable
to or better than my JBL on tour speakers? I have been considering the
Jawbone Jambox speakers, but I was wondering if theyhave the same quality as
the JBLs?
