 Ladies and gentlemen,

The hosting for the pc audio list and the domain name will
expire at the end of December. The list software has been
problematic for over a year. Not sending messages to some
people, not allowing some people to send messages to the
list, bouncing messages to valid e-mail addresses, a lot of
trash etc. I'm considering taking the list to free lists. I
don't mind paying for the domain name and hosting of the list
but the support just has not been very good.

I'm open to thoughts and opinions.

splitting files, automatic stop and screen reader sound stop

2014-11-25 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, All,

Happy Thanksgiving!

A couple of weeks back someone on this list recommended that I use
Totalrecorder to split a file into separate tracks.

Looking at the manual, I see that there's automatic stop and the ability to
suppress speech from screen readers.

The manual is very confusing to me. I prefer step by step instructions as to
how to do various tasks. Information is scattered throughout and I don't know
which items I should look at in order to accomplish my requirements.

Some of the screens in the program are not labeled so I was not able to figure
out whether a box works with seconds, minutes or even megabytes.

I realize it would be a time consuming project to write out all the steps, but
perhaps someone can point the way so I can figure out how to accomplish these
things.

audio source to mp3 output

2014-11-08 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello Listers,

I don't believe I've seen this covered. I have quite a few minidisks and wish
to copy them as MP 3 files. A number of devices can be used to do this, such as
the Victor Reader, second generation.

This is fine, but I'd like to take this a step further. My disks have perhaps
12 radio shows on them. My hope is to play such a disk through and have files
created by way of silence between tracks.

I'd sincerely appreciate your thoughts. Thank you very much.

I'm not using rewritable disks. In any case these disks play on other machines

bluetooth problem: one for the books

2014-06-14 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, Everyone,

I have been involved in the audio field since about 1947!! (Yes, that's right.)
This odd situation is simply unknown to me!

I have a mixer which feeds a transmitter. The receiver is attached to a PA
system. This works as it should, but it's a bit cumbersome. I have a tiny
bluetooth transmitter and a receiver. My plan was to replace my present setup
with the bluetooth gear.

The system works but not as expected. There's about a half second latency
between the transmitted signal and when it's received.

I substituted a Victor Stream for the mixer and the sound was fine. Well, I
couldn't check about latency.

I found this out when talking into a mike and hearing the PA system coming back
to me.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this rather bizarre situation.

I use one supplied by Kingdom Products in Pennsylvania. I've had it for years

There are two drawers, one above the other. There's a small panel with 4

Of course; this makes 1 at a time. It takes about 3 minutes to make one.

You'll need to check what models this firm offers now.

I haven'tdecided if I just want to do one at a time, or more than one.

Re: goldwave again

2013-11-09 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hi, John,

Pressing home after pressing control-j does move the audio cursor so I can
hear the start of the next cuepoint.

It used to be that when I used this same Goldwave version, 5.58, the two
cursors always tracked. I hunted around the various options but could not find
one which makes tracking of the two cursors possible.

Do you have further thoughts?

Many thanks!

Control j moves the start marker to the next cue point, but does not
move the playback cursor. After pressing control j, you can press home
to move the cursor to the start marker's position. If the file is
playing, playback should jump to the start marker position. I have play
3 set to cursor to end so that pressing the space bar will play starting
at the cursor, regardless of where the start and end markers are. You
can adjust the 3 play buttons in the control properties with f11 or
choose it from the options menu. If you want to confirm time positions
of start and end markers, press shift e and tab to the start or finish
edit box. The radio button that has focus when the dialog opens should
be set to time based position. Press escape to cancel if you don't want
to change the position of the markers.

I perhaps should have mentioned that the space does not stop a file and move

I hope this means something.

Re: goldwave problem

2013-11-05 Thread Joe Giovanelli
 Hello, Colin,

That áutoscroll box is checked.

We often use Cue Points to mark specific parts in a file. In my case these will
indicate where tracks are to begin on a cd.

In order to go from one such point to the next one, we use control-j.

Just to indicate what I've just tried, I changed to a different screen reader.

This next might mean something. When a file is playing, and if I press the
spacebar, the file should start from its beginning at the next press of the
spacebar. It does not do that. It commences at the same place it was when the
key was first pressed.

I hope I clarified this.

Again, thanks for your help.

Re: qchord

2013-07-15 Thread Joe Giovanelli
The QChord is an interesting musical instrument and when used as designed,
rather good sounds and musiclal arrangements are possible.

There is no way for it to be used as anything more than a MIDI synthesizer as
said previously. It cannot use VST or anything else.

If you need these things, you must consider other software or devices.

In addition to its use with a MIDI keyboard, the unit has many built-in
accompaniments which can be used to play with your singing or other musical
projects.

I recommend that you Google for the instrument and read about what it does
offer.

I don't believe I have any further to offer about this.

Joe uner the tools menu under the volume submenu you will find two more
menus, the match volume option and the maximise volume option. Under the
match volume option if you select the entire file you can tab through and
find the rms levels for the left and right channels of that file which will
show hyou the average volume level. Under the maximize option you will find
the highest peak in the file which will be expressed in db along with the
actual time where that is found. Then you can go to that portion of the file

Joe if you use the maximize feature you will be able to find out where the
highest peak is in the file in terms of time go to that section of the file
to find out what is causing that audio spike. What is the average rms level
you are getting in the file?

Subject: an interesting signal level problem

  Hello, Everybody,

I am running Goldwave version 5.8, along with Windows XP Professional.

I edit live recordings all the time and adjust volume with no problem,
till now. The file I'm currently working with is edited, all cue points in
place. I try to adjust for max. level but the signal is perhaps 20 dB
  lower than it should be.

I have either removed or lowered the applause volume. There's one song in
which the bass was way too heavy, so I brought that back. I tried
resetting for max. level, with no improvement.

I cannot find anything on this hour-long wavefile which is amiss, to me at
  least.

For grins I boosted the level to about 20 dB more than the so-called
maximus, and the signal is clean, telling me that everything should be
  fine.

Do you have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

I thank you in advance for any help you might have.

Re: Making .mp3's from cassette using Audacity.

2013-04-27 Thread Joe Giovanelli
 Hello,

It is not difficult to explain how to make mp 3 files when the person knows the
software. Think of all that person must know: how to edit pauses, set levels,
tell Goldwave to make the file or files as mp 3. Honestly, folks, it would be
easier for me to make the files myself than to explain the process to someone
who has no basic understanding of the process.

Colin, I think this is the best course. I have quite a few recording projects
right now or I'd see if I could help. If you can't help and if the person can
wait for an undetermined period, I'd do it. Hopefully there aren't many
casettes to copy and convert.

i'd got on fine with on my previous laptop), and although the sound
  is fine
when recording, playing the files back is very strange. Although
  the
overall quality is fine, the files seam to jump occasionally, so
  that parts

  these
  recordings are archers tapes,
so you may understand what i mean, when I say that the gaps between
  scene
changes are totally missed, and i'll go from one scene into another
  with
know pause at all. Do you have any suggestions about
settings i need to change? I've tried just playing around with it,
  but all i
seem to do is make the quality worse, or have know affect
at all, as i'm not as technically minded as some, i'm not as
  experienced.
If you like, i could up-load something to dropbox and show you
  exactly what
I mean? I've converted a file to mp3 just to see
if it was something in audasity itself, and sent it to someone else
  to test,
and its having the same affect. Again, I hope you don't mind me
  writing. Many Thanks,

problem with easy cd-da Extracter

2013-02-26 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, All,

I have a rather strange problem with easy cd Da Extracter, or its successor.
It used to run very well.

If I make a single track, the disk will burn. If I select everything in a
folder, I get a write preparation error.

When I first started using this software, I had a similar thing happen which
eventually worked itself out.

I've done virus scans, a cleaner program, removed unused programs, but no cigar.

I'm running Windows XP Pro.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this one.

If the chapters to be extracted have titles, is there a way to have them

for such titles, but I could not find a check box to go with that.

audacity

Hi,

I do not use Audacity, but Goldwave. I have a friend who does not have much
money so am looking into Audacity for him.

From a study of what seems to me to be a difficult manual, it looks as though
editing manipulations must be carried out by drag and drop. If that's so, how
can a blind user work with this program?

Is there a decent tutorial which can take me through a project and showing me
step by step how to make the software work?

I thank you for your help.

tiny tunes player

2012-12-17 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, Everybody,

You may have heard about a rather small player called Tiny Tunes. It claims
to have an excellent TTS engine, which means that it will read textfiles. It
plays various audio formats. The instructions tell us that it will read
folder names. Navigation is accoplished with a minimum number of controls.
Its 75 dollar price sounds great!

I strongly suggest that you do not obtain one. The speech is some of the worst
I have heard in my 30 years of computer use. I was not able to receive any FM
stations on its radio. I could write a long treatise on what this unit should
do as opposed to what it really does, but I won't. Suffice it to say that
navigation and response are erratic. When a few folders are loaded on to the
device, it will likely quit responding, leading to running down its battery.

I truly dislike writing negative things, but I have to do so in this case.

If you go to the Braille Super Store website, be sure to look for the company's
return policy. Among many unbblievable things, you'll read that none of its
products are warrantied. It gets worse from there.

Re: FM transmitters

Hi, Barry,

I use the C. Crane unit. I bought it a few months ago and it has been running
ever since.

I see no reason that it won't transmit over the required distance. If there's
a problem, clipping a small length of wire to the antenna will be more than
adequate.

Subject: FM transmitters

 Hi all,

I posted the following yesterday, but it hasn't come up on the list, so
perhaps for whatever reason it didn't get through. There
has been mention recently on the list of high end transmitters with multiple
inputs, but I am wanting something very basic which
will just do what I want. My original message follows.

I am looking at getting a small FM transmitter which will transmit the output
from a computer headphone jack to an FM radio
approximately 30 to 40 feet away.

I did a Google search and found the C. Crane FM Transmitter 2 which appears
to do what I want, but I have heard in the past that the
 C. Crane transmitters are a little lacking in output power. Does anyone have
one of these units and will it operate effectively
 over the required distance.

Alternatively, can anyone suggest an equivalent product which is better.

 Thanks,
 Barry Chapman

Re: would like information about the zoom h4n plese.

2012-07-15 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, Angel and List,

I use a Zoom H4N recorder for many reasons.

First, it provides 48 volts for certain condenser mikes.

Next, it is very easy to move between internal and external mikes.

Next, there's a buffer which holds 2 seconds of audio. What this means is that
if you're in a situation in which you don't know when a permance will start,
the buffer avoides your missing the first 2 seconds. In other words, as soon
as you hear the beginning of what you're going to record, you press the record
button and those first seconds will be there just az though you knew when to
start recording in the b/ place.

Next, because recordings are made on sd cards, it is possible to dump the
contents of those cards right to your computer.

I have a textfile written by Neal Ewers and Tom Kingston which does a great job
of describing the recorder and how to make it as accessible as possible. Even
if you found a recorder which might be better than this one, chances are that
it won't have instructions made to help blind users.

I doubt that I should put all that on this list, but if you decide to get the
machine, I will send you the material off list.

Let me know if I can be of more help.

No! The recorder only has two output channels unless there's something I have
not figured out. I have not tried to learn about multitrack recording, and
there's a dedicated folder for that.

You can only record on 2 channels at a time. There are 3 microphone

It's a great recorder if it falls within a person's needs.

Hello everyone, I have been recording an audio book for release, however the

able to remove that hum as much as possible. Does anyone know of a good hum
removal programme, or a good noise reduction VST plug-in that will work with
 Goldwave? Thank you.

Re: the h 1

2012-02-10 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Well, you're correct in a sense. There is still an option. The recorder idles
in record standby. The headphone output can be fed either into an analog
device or to the input of a sound card and hence, a connection to a computer.
It's not exactly a Usb solution but it's workable.

A note of caument. There is no mechanical isolation for the mikes so the unit
is highly susceptible to handling noise.

Hi, Tom,

Perhaps I'm missing something. Goldwave has a file merger feature which I have

If there are overlaps at file merge points, you'll have to take the time to
edit them. Apparently your project is important to you, so I guess it will be

Hello list: I'm probably going to be called stupid, unreasonable and
maybe other things too! But I wonder if this can be done? Here's what
happened: I recorded a show, using Tapin Radio this afternoon; what I didn't
realized is that I inadvertently had the thing set to split recordings!
That's not what I wanted! Consequently, I have over sixty files from this
program; what I wanted was the whole show, complete from start to finish!
Now is there a program that will allow me to accomplish taking these loose
files and putting them together to make it sound like the show would sound
from start to finish, and seamlessly? I guess there is the process of using
Total Recorder and somehow trying to figure out the proper order of things!
But that would be a mighty long process (the whole show is three hours long)
but this is what I would like to be able to do: have that show (the whole
3-hour show) and have it play as one recording! Am I asking for too much
 here?

wave to MP 3 conversion problem

2011-12-27 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hi, List Members,

I'm trying to do what I thou should be a straight forward thing. I have a
wavefile which runs about 5 hours and tried to convert it to an MP 3 file at
128 K, sampling rate of 44.1 kHz.

I used Goldwave to record and convert the file.

The finished file still says the file size is 2.8 GB.

This looks wrong to me.

Goldwave can play the file but Windows Media player cannot.

The steps to convert the file were:

I saved the wave file as an MP 3 file. Then I tabbed to attributes and
selected 128 KB.

I'd really appreciate someone telling me what I did wrong.

Thanks for reading this.

 Hello.

Sounds perfectly right to me. I've never tried saving such a huge amount of
data at once, but I can attest that it works for much smaller sizes. Maybe
you've encountered a bug of some kind?

If you have a CD ripper programme, most of them will convert wave to MP3.
You shouldn't have to do this but at least you'll be able to get the file
 you want...

 I have always used goldwave.  Simply load the wave file into the editor;
then do a save as. The save as dialog box has all the stuff you need.
One must set the file type and location as well as the format (bitrate,
etc.) before hitting the save button. A five hour file will take quite
some time to complete. Then goldwave will ask if you want to update the
sound in the editor to the new file. I always say no and close the file.
Then I open it again or go and try to play it in winamp. The new file
should be (maybe) ten percent of the size of the original file.

converting an improper wavefile

2011-12-05 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, Listers

I recorded and edited a concert which my CD burner rejects as an incompatible
wave file.

The only clue I find is that if I examine the information about the file it
shows a number: 1536. I see from looking at other files that I should see:
1411.

I am running Goldwave — a late but not the latest version.

My suspicion is that I may have pressed the wrong frequency button on my Zoom H
4 recorder.

Can I recover this file or will I have to record in analog? I originally
copied the file from the SD card used in the Zoom.

Thank you for whatever help you can offer.

loss of bass in my zoom h 4

2011-12-05 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello Everyone,

I have been using my H 4 for a couple of years and achieve great results. The
48-volt phantom power is a great feature.

A few days ago I got lost somewhere in the menus while changing between the
internal mikes and the external mikes. I got that straight eventally but from
then on the bass response was down perhaps as much 20 dB.

I never use the Effects module. Even so, the only place where there's a
mention of bass cut or boost is when using Effects.

It looks to me that whatever is done with Effects, it wouldn't include using
external microphones.

Has the machine failed or is this cockpit error? If the latter, how do I fix
this?

Thank you very much. You are all much more expert than I'll ever be.

Because a number of list members have recommended EAC as a superior CD

When I open it, I see installation finished. Looking around with the mouse

a Yahoo utility. I cannot find the installation wizzard for EAC.

What see is something called an IQ wizzard, which I have not seen previously.

I'd appreciate knowing how to unlock this puzzle.

Also, it appears that the software cannot run under Windows 7, which is not a

Re: How accessible is spotify?

2011-10-20 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello,

Spottify is a service by which you can listen to an almost limitless selection
of songs in a wide range of genras. As far as I could tell, there's no ability
to listen to radio stations.

You can only join Spotify if someone who is already a member sends you an
invitation. When you are accepted, there are two levels of entry. The free
one gives you access to everything but there are ads. I don't remember what
the fee is but it's worth it if you need to access lots of songs.

You are given an edit box in which you place your search term. The problem for
me was that, having done that, I couldn't read the search results. It appears
to me that the list generated from the search is printed in a non ASCII form.
I hope someone finds a way around the access issue because it's a great
service. No, you cannot download; you'd have to record the song.

I hoped, too, that the box would not appear after checking take no action. It
still does.

I've never been able to find and check a box which says Always do the
suggested action, after checking Take no action.

one of the action is take no actions then tick it for every time you
insert a disc and I guess the box will no longer appear.

 Hello, Listers,

In Windows XP, how do we turn off actions when a cd is inserted.

I do not want to be asked if I want to burn a disk nor anything else
when I put a disk into a drive.

I hunted through the Control Panel and in Windows Media Player but
couldn't find anything that seemed relevant.

I thank you for any help with this.

ecm-ms957

2011-08-26 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hi, List,

Some time ago some people here talked about the Sony ecm-#ieg mike. Curious, I
found one. As folks said, it sounds good in general. It has rather low
output, but more important, bass response is way down. It does work well for
speech, and, in fact, I used it to put a reading of a part of my book on my
website.

I find no adjustments other than the position of the on/off switch and the
rotating capsules.

I look for whatever you have to say about this.

Thank you.

cdex

2011-08-26 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello, All,

A member of this list recommended cdex to extract tracks from cd's. That was
very much appreciated, and indeed, it works quite well. There are some disks
which, for some reason, cannot be extracted.

I went to Sourceforge and found a later one (with a version number too long for
me to quote. Should anyone look for it, it's obviously the last version issued
back in 2009.

It extracts faster than the first version I tried. It extracts even those
disks which originally could not be extracted. Problem es that they don't
appear to go anywhere. I know where they should be found, but no luck. I
searched for the files and they couldn't be found.

I figured that I'd find aa clue in the menus but I could not find one. I don't
recall what happened when I tried using the help function.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or am not seeing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello again. I use COULDEX for this purpose, and I think that was the
program we used when I was on the phone with you. You'll run into the same
problem that you had before, if it won't recognize the cd info. It will make
a folder called no artist, with a folder called no title inside of it, if
you set it up this way. Then you'll need to rename the folders, but the ID3
tags won't be filled in properly, though you could tab through and fill in
the artist and title info before you hit f9 to extract into mp3. F8 extracts
to .wav, by the way.. If you take the time to do the filling in of the info
before extracting, then the folders that are created will be relevant.

and it works great, once you have it on your hd. you should also backup your

Although I'm not familiar with the recording you mentioned, I can say that, at
the dawn of stereophonic sound on phonograph records, London Records released a
recording called A JOURNEY into stereophonic sound. I'd have to play it to be
sure but I think the narrator opened the recording by saying:

This is a journey into stereo sound.

I don't know if this is the true origin of the sample, but it's my best guess.

Assuming I'm correct, the recording was an LP, two sides, which took the
listener to many sites, such as the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

I have it on a cd I made, consisting of various stereo demos. Perhaps you can
search for it. Maybe you can find a copy. It's more than I can tackle to send

Studio Recorder has a built-in VU meter. I have that software but have not had

 Hello list,

I am presently working at an archive in upstate NY digitizing some of
their audio. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of how I could make
a vu meter accessible. It would be nice to have an ability to read
levels in realtime so that I know where to back off the gain later. I am
using goldwave as my main editor since I know it and have used it for
the longest time. I am a window-eyes user, I know jfw has scripts for
sound forge, but I don't know jfw that well at all. There is not an ap
for window-eyes that I am aware of for sound forge. The adobe audition
ap provides basic function, but goldwaves interface seems pretty
accessible compared to others out there like diamond cut 8 which I
couldn't even get to do, wnything.

If there is not a solution to reading levels in realtime on a computer,
what do you recommend for finding peak levels of audio? A sighted person
can just scan the waveform for peaks, and the normalize feature is hit
or miss depending on the software used, the level set by the user, and
the range of frequencies in the recording.

That's true, but you can experiment with editing or speed changes and a few
more things. These things must be done on a file which you do not need; it is
experimental after all.

Re: microphone and stereo question

2011-06-17 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Joe and all,

I use a recorder to do most live recording and that's what I know best.

I think we need to know how you're miking your subjects. It also might be good
to know how far the speakers are separated. In fact, are you listening through
speakers or with headphones?

Is there a setting on the microphone which could possibly widen the stereo
image?

If your subject is very close to the mike, any movement can make a difference
to the sound stage. Have the subject stand a bit further away from the mike.

Is there quite a bit of reverb in the room used for recording. Rev. can add to
the stereo effect.

I use two mikes at 90 degrees , mounted on a single stand. I wish I could say
that my stereo is too wide!
I hope that helps somewhat.

Hi, All,

There is often a price to pay for radio sensitivity. Extreme sensitivity comes
at the expense of dynamic range.

Better head room can sometimes be gained by higher voltage on the first RF

may have trouble with the strong station leaking over the weaker one making
 it inaudible.

As I said earlier you do get what you pay for often and the sangean sets are
a case in point, I spoke about the wooden cabinet tabletop radios that
company makes, they actually build or built radios for CCrane, I think they
built the CCrane, CC+ and CC II.

You spoke of battery life? That's one very good point about the CC EP, it
will run for 350 hours on a set of 4 d size batteries, not bad at all!

Yep, its very sensitive no doubt about that but it does have some
problems and this is understandable given the price, after all $70.00 is
  a very small
price to pay for a radio.

If you're living near a very strong medium wave transmitter as I do then
it may be that your CC EP won't perform at its best due to interference
  from
 that
transmitter, this I'm told is due to the Single Conversion circuitry
  used in the CC EP.

To Illustrate the point, suppose you're tuning through the medium wave
band, you think you're hearing signals from far away when actually
  you're
 hearing
what appear to be ghosts or shadows of the local high powered transmitter
  instead.

The Solution? Well there are several you can try, the most obvious is to
spend say $50.00 more and purchase the CC SW which has a Dual
 Conversion
circuit and you notice the difference straight away. The CC SW is not
perhaps exactly as sensitive as the CC EP but its far more selective for
  one
 thing
and you certainly don't get the ghosting or shadowing I spoke about for
another, I've several CC Radios and I reckon the CC SW would have to be
 the
best CC Radio set I own.

I reviewed the CCSW on Blind Cool Tech a little while ago so you'll find
  the review there.
Blind Cool Tech also has a review of the CC EP from last year and I've
just done a review of the CC II radio which is more sensitive than the
  CC EP
however it suffers from the same problems due to its single conversion
receiving circuit, this review is still awaiting approval to the blind

Hello,

These days laptops work amazingly well. Saying this, there are, as far as I
know, no expansion slots in which to put a second sound card.

Whatever laptop you ultimately get, you must live with the soundcard which
comes with it. Even so, the soundcards I heard work well enough for most
applications.

I'll look forward to other thoughts.

Hi,

Check the volume settings. Make sure that the line input is not muted or you
won't hear anything from the card, even if sound is being recorded.

This should be true for both the internal and the external soundcard.

Hi folks. I have another question related to this topic. I have a del lap

on my sound card. I think the brand is IT Audio, if I'm not mistaken. I
tried an external sound card, thinking that would help, but never got any
audio that way either. To clarify, I hear sound from play-back of CD's and
internet audio and windows sounds fine, but if I'm trying to record
something, I can't hear it coming through the sound card, until while I'm
recording it. Hope I've made sense here. Any ideas?

recovering title and track info

2011-03-25 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hello,

I've been going 'round in circles with recovering title and track information
from cds for which I have no notes. COULDEX fails in part because its database
is not complete. I'm not sure why Mapler fails, but my guess is that its
database can only be accessed one time if I didn't buy Mapler.

All I need is a program dedicated to this one purpose. I don't to extract
tracks. It doesn't have to supply hot and cold water. All it has to do is to
permit me to obtain, copy and paste track info into my Jukebox database.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions any of you may have.

Re: track tagging programs

2011-03-25 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Thanks for your note.

I looked at Audiograbber and my antivirus program tells me that there's wrong
with that site. I could have told the firewall to let it run, but was
reluctant to do that.

I can't pretend to be super great with these programs but it appears that the
Audio Tag Editor isn't accessible. I don't a way to look at menus. Usually
the alt key will show me the basic menus, but pressing that button shows
nothing.

It seemed hopeful in that, before inserting a disk, I saw the blank form for
track, title and more. Once the disk was inserted, all that disappeared. I
saw a list of folders which I guess I was to select but alas! I couldn't do it.

I've spent lots of time with dead ends but I guess I'm learning something in
the process.

I have yet to install Winamp and see how that works.

Hi, JM and All,

Many of your questions are best answered on the QWS mailing list. You'll find
it shown in the excellent manual which is supplied with QWS.

Goldwave will help you if you create a number of MIDI files and want to put
them onto a cd;. You'd record the data from a MIDI synth into Goldwave and
then edited out pauses or whatever else is needed.

Subject: Introduction, and so forth

 Hello.
I don't seem to recall introducing myself on this list, so here goes.
I'm JM. I'm a tinkerer and a dabbler and an alchemist. I'm starting to
experiment a great deal with sound manipulation on the PC as well as getting
my feet wet in MIDI stuff. SO far it has been interesting, although I feel
like much of what I do is guesswork. I'm a JAWS user, and i've been running
both audacity and goldwave with some success, especially with goldwave,
whose responsiveness, keyboard commands and scripts make it possible to
perform most tasks a non-screenreader-user could do without even knowing
what they're about, simply because in some ways having wave forms and other
visual data at your disposal makes things remarkably easy if you're not
really looking to do professional stuff. Basically I think it's incredible
that almost anyone can do complex editing without really understanding the
principles; for us though some understanding is really necessary in order to
 accomplish anything.

So I'm very interested in a lot of things. I've read through some manuals,
guides and so on, and what i've noticed is that there are a lot of resources
we can use, if we just know where to look. I'm interested then in any tips
people here might h...what other programmes should I be looking into? I
have yet to purchase a Midi keyboard but I have started using a programme
called QWS, which is a Midi sequencer whose functionality is completely
keyboard-friendly and which even lets you play notes on your QWERTY. I also
have found a lot of VST synths that seem like they'd be fun to play with,
but I'm not quite sure how to make them work, and in any case they might not
be too useful until I get a keyboard to play on.

I found a programme called Soundplant that I had some interest indd_basically
it lets you trigger samples using single keys. You could use it with one
sample to vary the pitch with each key, creating a sort of musical keyboard
with whatever sound you choose, or you could enter in several different
samples and have different keys trigger each one, creating a sort of collage
or whatever. Unfortunately the programme seems 99completely* inaccessible...I
can't even read the main window at all and none of the standard windows keys
will work. Anyone know this programme? is there something else out there
 that will perform similar functions?

So, I know this is a lot of ground; my main question is rather vague, merely
asking for any tips from fairly experienced users. What should I try out?
What should I avoid? I got a Creative soundblaster x-fi card and while the
hardware seems rather good barely any of the software that came with the
card is usable for me...n even the media player. . This seems quite normal
for Creative Labs. I certainly think next time I'll try getting a card
bundled with more friendly software. What are your experiences?

 Thanks folks...

I use a Braille Sense for e-mail and occasionally the translator messes things

I wrote that for you so that there couldn't be a translation error.

As for c d e x, well, when I put a cd into the drive, I see tracks and times,
but no titles onor artist data.

Pressing f 1 does not launch help. I looked at all the files in the c d e x

I hope I conveyed the reason I'm stuck.

Hmm, odd. Are you using braille input to type or format your messages? I
checked your message, and it turned my original message into the word
couldex, when my actual message said c d e x, as four distinct letters. I'd
never seen that happen before, when it made c d translate into the braille
contraction could. Anyhow, once you put a cd into the drive and start couldex
up, it will automatically pull the cd from its database, assuming it's a
regular commercial cd. It goes by the time of each track. That's how it
figures out what cd you've put in. There are a couple of places where using
the mouse cursor, or Jaws cursor will help, specifically in opening up areas
where you tell the program where to store the files. Also, you'll probably
want to read the help area inside the program that deals with the percent
signs and how to structure that format so that it puts the files in the
correct folder structure. On another unrelated note, and you may want to
respond off-list for this, but have you kept up with Ed Potter's
announcements which he continues to do? How are you doing otherwise? He said
you might be in Virginia, but also I think you're from New York as well.
We've not corresponded before, but when the archives of Playback magazine
and the underground tapes became available on mp3, I listened to the
magazine from its beginning, though I hadn't ever been aware of it
beforehand. So keep asking questions about couldex, and I'll try to help as
 best I can.

attenuator. I found that the middle position (least attenuation) is great for
all sorts of recording. I usually take its sd card and put it into my computer
and edit my work using Goldwave. It is no problem if the levels are sometimes
low; I just maximize the volume with the proper Goldwave tool.

If all you wish to do is record using the internal mikes, you don't need to
concern yourself with menus. Just turn on the unit, wait 30 seconds, and then
press the record button twice.

To end a recording, press the top of the joystick. Pressing it again will
begin playback through the headphones.

The noise is so low that I can happily ignore it.

I often use external condenser mikes which require 48 volts. This does require
dipping a toe into the menus but it's absolutely easy. I've never come to
grief here. I can explain that to anyone who needs the info.

There is no line in jacks. These's a way to use the XL connectors but I do not
know how to set them up; it is not necessary for my particular needs.

Just in case someone cares, I've dabled in audio since 1946 and earlier.

Subject: Question re Zoom Series Digital Recorders

 Hello colleagues,

I am very seriously considering one of the Zoom digital recorders and have
heard many positive things particularly about the Zoom H1. Curiously, there
seems to be a consensus on discussion lists that the H1 model is preferred
even over later models including the Zoom Hbled. Are my perceptions off the
reservation, or are they valid? If they are legitimate why does the H1 seem
to be preferred over later models of the Zoom-H series? Thanks in advance for
 any guidance you can offer.
 Best regards,

Re: Question about goldwave, CD reader.

2011-03-14 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hi, Mark and List,

Just to be sure we're on the same page, go to tools by pressing alt-that. Then
select cd Reader and press enter.

From what you write, that's what you're doing. I wonder if perhaps you're
running Windows 7 and using a version of Goldwave which is not compatible with
that operating system.

If this isn't the problem, I have to guess that your copy of the program is
corrupted. Get another copy and uninstall the current copy before installing
the new download.

I rip cds occasionally and have no difficulty.

 Howdy,

I just got Goldwave, and I am still learning how to use it. I tried to rip a
CD, using the Goldwave CD reader. When I hit enter on the menu item CD
reader, my computer made a very strange noise, and then restarted. I tried
it several times with the same result. I am pretty new at this computer
stuff, but I really don't think it is an operator problem. I hope someone
 can help.

Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player

2011-03-10 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Hi, List,

There's more to the proper operation of a talking MP 3 player than installing
the Rockbox folder. There's another folder involved.

There are quite a few functions which I suspect that most players won't
support.

I'd rather have Mr. Mesa's technical support than I would want to experiment
with. I have one of his units and it's excellent.

I plan to purchase one of these devices, and frankly, in spite of my level

Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player

2011-03-05 Thread Joe Giovanelli
The Rockbox folder is very complex. In order for files to be spoken, there are
some utilities which must be run. These are in another folder which is a part
of what Mr. Mesa has in his Sansa players.

I think it's wonderful to see that he has taken the time and trouble to offer
these products. He is well versed in the workings of these players and is very
patient with people who may have difficulties with the players, especially when
they first receive them.

Hmm, not sure about this, bordering on going against the Rockbox open licence
agreement, as you'll see from his web site he's selling Rockbox installed on
 the player.

Re: disk burning software

2011-01-26 Thread Joe Giovanelli
Thanks Jason. What you suggest sounds good, but most of the files I wish to
burn require divisions into tracks. Can this be done with one of the options?

You said that Nero should work. I have the version for Windows 7 and that
version appears to be inaccessible. I can't find an earlier version. Even
then, can start IDS be added to my files?

No you don't actually windows7 has been accessible for me what you do is
put in the cd then a window should pop up and say how do you want to
burn this disc with windows explorer or windows dvd maker, well you
choose windows explorer then a edit box comes up with what the wizzard
should think what the cd should be called, erase what is in the edit box
and title your disc then hit enter after it asks you what do you want
to use this disc as a USB flash or a cd for playing cd players choose
the second use it for cd's check box checked then hit enter then a list
view should come up alt tab to the folder you want to burn to the disc,
then use up and down arrows on the folder to select the folder, and then
hit your applications key and arrow up until you here send to hit right
arrow on that menu and then arrow down until you here send to dvd drive
hit enter on then and now alt tab back to the dvd drive hit your alt key
it should say menu bar arrow up until you here burn to disc hit enter on
that and a window should appear asking you do you want to burn a data
disc or audio disc choose one of those options by hitting right left or
up and down arrows and then tab to it says next button and then it
should start burning on the disc there are also options to tell the
wizard what to do before burning the material to your disc hope this
helps you, if this doesn't work then get nero and it should work for you.
