My immediate problem is that I was looking at Nero and somehow accidently uninstalled it. I was looking on the site and it's kind of dawnting knowing which one. Basically I just want one that I can copy cds and make cds from files on the hard drive. I noticed a free one there but don't know if it will copy cds. I don't mind paying a little but don't want to get a big one that does all kinds of stuff I'd never use. Any suggestion? Thanks. Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Houdy Chris, Well said and that's exactly right. Why go through all of the naggings of D I Y when you can get peace of mind by allowing someone who truly knows the product to take the edge off. I'm as savvy as they come with lots of computer related apps and stuff, but I always when something's over my head consult the experts and have no problems paying a couple a dollars for the peace of mind. It's a well spent investment and not a rip off. A rip off occurs when proper service is not provided, and by having the rockbox firmware pre-installed properly by an expert, is truly a service that gives peace of mind to all users, savvy and those of us who are non-savvy alike. I have clients who in fact pay me to do their scans, and software updates which by most of my standards any lay person should know; however they choose for the peace of mind to have me do it and are satisfied that the jobs done and done right. Now is that ripping someone off, or providing peace of mind for them? Tony God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the weaponry to make a difference. - coda from Immortals Anonymous -Original Message- From: Christopher Chaltain Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2011 12:27 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player I haven't bought one of these MP3 players myself, but the last time I was shopping around for a Sansa e280, I was tempted. Here's what I spent my time doing getting that Sansa e280: 1) First, since the Sansa e280 couldn't be purchased new any more, I went to eBay to find one. I don't spend a lot of time on eBay, so there was a learning curve doing this. 2) At the time, Rockbox only supported v1 of the Sansa E series firmware, so I had to contact each Sansa e280 seller and explain to them how to check the level of firmware and make sure I was getting one that had the v1 level of the firmware. 3) Once I got my Sansa e280, I had to reformat the Sansa's memory since it contained a virus. Luckily my antivirus software caught it before it got onto my hard drive. 4) After reformating the Sansa's memory, I had to download the utility to reload the Sansa's factory firmware. 5) I was finally ready to reinstall Rockbox, which fortunately went off without a hitch, but I'm very careful to install Rockbox manually and follow the instructions in the manual very carefully. 6) After getting Rockbox installed, I realized the battery in the Sansa e280 wasn't holding a charge. I replaced that battery with a battery from one of my other Sansa e280's, which had a different problem. I consider myself pretty technically savvy, and I did get an Sansa e280 with Rockbox installed on it, but considering how much time I spent doing it, spending a few extra dollars to have it all done for me would have been money well spent. I've also spent quite a bit of my time helping others get Rockbox installed on their MP3 players, so I know there are people out there less technically savvy than I am who probably could not have done what I did to get my Sansa e280 up and running. I don't think this is a rip off at all, and I think it's unfair to make people who are less technically savvy or have less time on their hands to feel bad or feel like they're getting ripped off when they go this route. I could change my own oil, but I choose to take my car to a place to have it done. I could do my own financial planning, but I choose to hire someone to do that for me. Paying someone for peace of mind or time saved is not a rip off. -- Christopher (CJ) chalt...@gmail.com On 03/07/2011 03:54 PM, David Truong wrote: Hi, For what it's worth. Not everyone in the blind community has the knowledge to install Rockbox on their player and set it up for themselves. I do that for them and they pay me a little extra to provide them with the finished product, and I help them with using it and enjoying their listening choices, which brings them pleasure that they would have had to pay hundreds of dollars for if they used another alternative, which perhaps they weren't in financial shape to do. Yes, Rockbox is open source and free, and some people find it easy to install, while others do not. It is these people that I help out with my service. No one is forced to purchase anything, and I'm completely honest with anyone who I deal with. Re: What's the easiest CD burning software?
Houdy, There's a lot of different fre one's out there. It really depends on what you want. For audio CD and Data CD and DVD creation you can get deep burner from http://www.deepburner.com. For a more advanced program which will create movie DVD's as well you can get tiny burn from http://www.tinyburn.com, however, this program uses a different type of installer and you also have to be careful because it wants to install a ton of additional unnecessary toolbars and bloat ware. Then there is DVD video soft's free studio4.8. This robust 25 program suite is a complete collection of converters, rippers, and burners which are all screen reader friendly. and allow you to do numerous tasks. You can get that one from http://www.dvdvideosoft.com Hope this helps. Re: my Cd's or dvd's will not play at all on my machine
Hi randy, This is a good news bad news thing as far as being able to help you with this goes. Tomorrow I'm going to be going out of town so I won't be able to do much for you after tonight but here's as much information as I can give you to help you on the road to recovery. Are you using windows xp with service pack 3? If the answer to this is yes, then this is a major problem. I went through a similar meltdown of my CD and DVD-RW rom drives and had to end up buying new ones. Let me try and explain what I hope has not happened to you because this got me good. In service pack 3 windows not only alters registry codes pertaining to your CD and DVD rom drives, they also implement some early windows installer technologies in there that are not compatible to today's packages. It's like having an ensult and trying to put a top of the line stereo system in it. This of course will not work and what's possibly happened is that the old technology has rendered the new CD and DVD-rom technologies useless. The end result of this is that you may have to do one of three things: The first of these is hopefully the solution for your problem and that is to go to the following link and download the patch from microsoft that's under the fix it for me link on the webpage. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060#nextsteps Once you're on that page, run the patch. After you have run it, check to see if windows still sees your drives then, try to play a CD or DVD in your rom drives. If they still don't work, re-install your rom burning software. This is especially true if you are running any of the following: iTunes software by Apple Nero software by Nero Inc Roxio Creator software by Sonic Solutions Zune software by Microsoft If you are using windows vista, these same steps apply. If you have done the re-install of the rom burning software and windows still refuses to see it or play your CD's re-install your CD-and DVD-rom drivers. You may also have to go to the website that makes your rom drives and check for the latest updater to your firmware. Be sure when doing this that you get the exact make and model to avoid complete corruption of the drives. Hope this helps. Hi don, in order to download torrents check out torrent sites like B T junkie.com, or mininova.oerg or you can do a google search on them. While you're on the sites you can browse through the different torrents that a available. Simply select the category you want to grab stuff from like tv shows. the different tv show torrents will be listed. select the download link and save it. Once you have it saved on your computer, open utorrent then from the file menu choose add torrent. Select the torrent you saved on your computer tab over to ok and the torrent will start downloading. When finished, itt will be saved in a downloads folder created by utorrent. This folder by default will be in the my documents folder. Hope this helps. Tony - Original Message - From: Donald L. Tony - Original Message - From: Curtis Delzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: the PC audio discussion list pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 4:13 PM Subject: decent sound card. Hi all! Well, apparently, my old SoundBlaster Live! has bit the big one. Drivers, loaded, effects, loaded, no sound, though. :) This is a modern computer, so nothing connects to the disk drives like for audio from cd roms as in the old days, but, nothing! It worked before, but now, nothing. What do you all recommend about a decent sound card? I record a lot from differing sources, so need something of decent quality. This real_tech97, is a piece of sh**t, really, sounds like a transistor radio through my audio_file Sony headphones, all highs and no bass hardly at all, and do not want to record over a motherboard installed chip set, under any conditions. So please, flood me with suggestions, and why, etc. I really do need to know! I would prefer a PCI mounted one, though an external USB is not out of the question, as much as why someone would recommend one more than they would a PCI mounted one. Why would an external USB mounted one be preferred, portability, or true audio-file quality? Do sound cards come with R I A A equalization for turntables and cartridges? It might be important, since if I bought, sometime down the line a V15 type 5 and a GOOD turntable, I'd want something that would justify such a good pickup, to be transferred into digital form properly. I don't need roll off in the card on the bottom end or top end, just flat response between, probably 10Hz to way above 2Hz. Those who think that twenty thousand Hz is the top end for music don't know about overtones and double speed recording of sound since I want to be doing, so that when restored to proper octave, no loss at the top end, know what I mean? Thanks, and come on guys, let your hair down as to why you think you have the best sound card. I truly need to know, and wouldn't you know it? Today or soonest since I have projects and my good old SB_Live! is no longer living. True it had a noise floor of probably no more than minus 65DB, but hey, most of the time, it worked fine and there was no limit on the bass response. I probably want to be able to record at 192000Hz, so keep that in mind if they exist yet. At least I want to be able to record at 88200Hz sampling. Re: stripping audio from an avi file
Hi scott, you can go to the microsoft site and get the windows media encoder which will convert the file from avi to windows media audio (WMA) and depending on what encoder software you have convert the (WMA) files to mp3. It's a long way to do it but I don't know of any straight avi to mp3 converter software. Hope this helps. Re: Free-For-All Friday
Hi, I've yet to weigh in on this topic but I'll give you my thoughts now. If it has anything to do with audio related matters and programs that provide us with ways and means of doing things with audio and such by all means that works. As for podcasts talking about touring my living space, my moldy oldies show, or my day in the dentist chair; puh lease spare me and the rest of us. Tony - Original Message - From: Jonathan Mosen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 1:53 PM Subject: RE: Free-For-All Friday Hi tom, let me say that as the founder of this list, I am really glad you are looking after it. It's a thankless task. I also think it's a credit to you that you sound people out for their views on these sorts of issues. I'd like to suggest that there is a difference between free for all advertising of podcasts and streams, and the mentioning of PC-Audio related streams or podcasts in context. For example, I think someone posted here about the recent main menu broadcast on MP3 players. To me, such a post is perfectly appropriate, since it directs people to additional info on matters pertaining to the subject matter of this list. Similarly, I think in response to someone's question about iTunes on here a while back, I directed people to the January FSCast. Similarly, I think the may FSCast would indeed be of real interest to people on here. To be honest I just forgot to mention it here. Petro often mentions his podcasts on Replay AV, and that's right on topic too in my opinion. This, to me, is all good stuff. What I think would detract from the list is everyone being able to write in to say, come and listen to my podcast where I've done a sound seeing tour of my dentist's waiting room or whatever. So to me, if the subject matter of a stream or podcast is of the kind that would be considered on topic for this list, it is worth a one-off mention. Thanks for your work on the list and keep up the great work. Thanks to all for your thoughtful and enlightening comments. I actually aggree with most of the posts thinking that an e-mail list should be rather restrictive in the content that is permitted. I'll explain my reasoning below for making the suggestion if anyone is interested in reading it. Otherwise, go to the next message. A week or so ago there were a few comments posted to the list about a piece of software that was no longer going to be accessible with a screen reader. Shortly after reading those posts I listened to the May issue of FS Cast and was amazed what all Jonathan was doing with the PAC Mate Omni. I got to thinking, and me thinking is a problem in itself, this is something any blind person who is the least bit interested in audio and computers should hear. I'm sure those podcasts have more listeners than this list has members, but there might be members of this list who aren't aware of that podcast. Likewise, there are other podcasts that I think are extremely helpful in teaching and demonstrating a lot of accessible hardware and software and perhaps a few list members would find them of interest. I think sometimes, we emphasize too much the negative and forget the positives of accessibility. Re: Ripping from Nero
Hi Peter, There's a couple of ways that I do it. I don't use the database option because quite honestly I don't know how the freakin thing works and I've used nero for the last 6 years sighs. But I use the traditional manual method of naming each track individually; unless I use the select all option and then name everything through windows explorer afterwards. There has been no response so does this mean that the answer to my question is no or that nobody knows the answer. I would be very grateful for any information. The question is pasted below. I am aware that when tracks are ripped and saved to the hard disk the track titles can be drawn down from the net. As long as Nero is running these track names are available and read when the files are viewed in Windows Explorer. However, when Nero is unloaded the track names revert back to 01.mp3 02.mp3 etc. Is there a way within Nero of automatically changing the actual file names to the track titles or does this have to be done manually to each track using normal editing techniques. Re: understanding Dvd-r discs
Hi Scott, I'll try to answer as much of this as I can considering I do this style of backup all the time. I took each of the questions you have and the answers are right beneath. So pardon the length of this gang and please feel free to weigh in if I've missed anything. 1. Can dvd-r discs be used to store mp3 and other compresse media such as WMA? If so, is the process for burning, if that is the correct term, the same as burning a cd? For example, can I copy/paste or send items to the dvd drive on my pc, then perform a standard data burn via Windows Media? Answer: There are two answers here. First, Yes burning is the correct term, and you can save audio files such as MP3's on them just like you would a data CD. As for the second question here. No, you cannot use windows media player to burn DVD'S unless you're running vissta and that's a whole different kettle of fish. You can get a program called deep burner which is a free rom-burning tool for the procedure. Go to http://www.deepburner.com to grab it. It's totally accessible and very screen reader friendly. I use it when I don't feel like using nero. Grins. If you get the program just e-mail me offlist and I will help you with the burning procedure. It's no problem. 2. Once I've gotten the mp3/WMA files onto the dvd-r disc, regardless of the method, can this disc then be played back in most dvd players, including video dvd players folks use in conjunction with their televisions? I realize there will be exceptions, but if there is a general rule/answer to this question, I would love to be enlightened. Also, if I have stored a large number of files, contained in multiple folders on this dvd, will a person using a video dvd player be able to view the names of those folders and their files? Answer: On this one, I'm not totally however, I believe so, DVD rom-players can play just about anything that you stick in them. Audio or video. So that should not be a problem, and a person with sight should be able to see what's on it. If anyone wants to weigh in on this, please do. 3. Amazon is offering a spindle of 100 dvd-r discs made by TDK for $26. Does this seem a good bargain? Answer: It's not a bad deal at all. I may consider buying them from there myself. Thanks for that tip. Hopefully I was able to help. Tony - Original Message - From: Scott Blanks [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where crashes are few and far between) lol is totally unacceptable so back onto the machine went VLC media Player, it was listening to both that I make the following observations. Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you can hear the differences quite distinctly. Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways, VLC is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems to be. I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much experience with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's probably due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under the Mac using command-left and command-right arrow respectively, on the PC version you use P and N on the keyboard If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try then use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just about everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs. question about CDDB and winamp 5.5
Hey gang, Has winamp lost the CDDB option in version 5.5? I was trying to get information about a CD and when I went to the CDDB button it said that it wasn't installed. What happened to it? The Gracenet service has always been a part of the program. This is strange. Hi There, Sorry for this one, I know this is off topic for the list. but when I've had this problem here's what works for me. run the check disc utility on the damaged floppy and have it fix system errors. Hi ray, Nero supports this format and the audio conversion pack will allow you to convert from this format to others and back. I've been told the MP4 format - or the audio part of the standard - is supposed to be better than MP3 both in terms of file size and the sound quality achievable with a lossy format. Can anyone comment on this? Also, I'd like to know if there are any shareware or reasonably priced converters around, either as stand alone converters or as part of audio editors. hi vinny, To my knowledge, you shouldn't have to format CD-RW'S. You can create and burn the compilation just as you would on a regular CD-R. Re: when burning a cd with nero what is the best bit rate to use
houdy Casey, For burning purposes I use any speed from as little as 12 to as much as 24x but no higher. Higher speeds for recording audio in nero or for that matter other burners tend to cause writing errors; trust me I've got the coasters ta proobe it grins. Tony - Original Message - From: Casey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 2:21 PM Subject: when burning a cd with nero what is the best bit rate to use What I would like to know is. When using Nero to make a copy of a cd that you own or have borrowed or whatever when you are selecting your speed for it to burn at witch is the best speed to use? What I mean is when you are setting Nero up to copy the disc and it is an audio cd. When you get to the place where you can select the speed for your drive to burn at like 48 x 32 24 16 witch one is best to select or doesn't it matter? Also is there a loss in the sound of the audio on the copy of the disk that you just made or does using one speed over another give you better sound quality for your copied cd? Just wanting to know cause I am burning a lot of disks today and would like to get it done with the best quality that I can. So I will look forward to reading any replies that come across the list on this. Thanks to everyone in advance for any assistastance that I might get on this. Recently had an interesting experience with writing data files to a DVD. Every 3 months or so I backup all of my important data files. I've got office 2002 on this thing and I use nero ultra version 6 to do the DVD and CD writing stuff; and I make it a common practice to do a backup of all of my backups just in case something goes awry. Well as the fates would have it something did indeed go quite awry. After creating the primary burn and testing to see if everything came out as it should I found that some of the data files read perfectly while quite a few failed to read at all. Ran every test in the book and still couldn't find any answers to why this happened. I then substituted the secondary backup DVD of the files and found that it not only read the files perfectly from the rom but just as flawless when reloaded back into the PC. My quandry here is what could have caused such a bum write with the primary DVD. I've been burning audio now for 6 years and have never seen that one till now. What do yall think could have happened? Re: More Bigger CD Storage
Houdy John, Here's a site that has information on 99-minute CD'S. It's CD media world and the link is http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_cd-r99.shtml There are some caveats you have to be aware of with this type of CD Though and the most important of them is these CD-R99 media do not comply to the CD Red-Book standard. If you experienced problems using CD-R80 media then forget about CD-R99 media as it will not work at all! Check out the site for all the rest of the details. The idea is, you get a trickle download, but from many sources simultaneously. It sounds like whatever you are downloading, there aren't too many sources for it.
