Subject: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation

Hi!

I just bought one of these units and would like to make comment on my
purchase.

Firstly I think that the unit does a brilliant job for what it is in
most respects.

The sound from the internal speaker is a little muffled however - having
already heard a VR Stream - I was already prepared for this, a bit of an
annoyance one might say so to overcome this I use a small BUniden
hand-held amplified battery speaker I've had for years, cost me $25
about 7 years ago, pity the Stream doesn't have Bluetooth but I guess a
product can't have everythint.

Now I don't know whether this is my unit in particular but I have
noticed that the downloading of data seems to be incredibly slow
compared to other devices I have on my network, I used the "Check for
Updates" function and - according to that - the firmware is up to date,
well at least the data does get downloaded I guess.

There's a hell of a lot of functionality packed into the VR Stream box
and a lot of this - such as the Internet Radio, podcasts and so forth -
I won't bother using - given I already have better solutions for that
sort of thing - but for those who don't the VR Stream provides a great
entry level to the world of Internet Radio and Podcasting.

Getting online with the Vision Australia library was a snap so I
downlaoded a couple of books.

Again, I have other Apps and so forth which I prefer to use myself but
the Stream is convenient for reading, no doubt about that even though I
read all my newspapers these days straight from the web site its good to
know I have a reliable backup.

Hello everyone,

It's possible that someone on the list may have already asked this question
some time ago, but I have no way to confirm that. Anyway, I'd like to
install Virtual Audio Cable on my computer to check it out and see what its
like. However, while researching about the software, I'm a little concerned
about the complexity of the process. People online have been saying that
uninstalling VAC is not quite as straight forward as uninstalling other
programs is. I've heard, that Virtual Audio Cable is one of those programs
that likes to spread its particles all around the windows operating system,
which means having to messa round with the system registry and/or installing
some third-party software just to get rid of it. Have any of you ever tried
using this program? Is it really as difficult to uninstall as some people
say it is? I just thought I'd find out now, before installing some piece of
software to which I won't be able to uninstall very easily. Thanks in
advance for any help.

enter. Then tab till you get to a tab control box and arrow to the right

Subject: every media player on computer lowers jaws volume

Now I remember many of us struggling many years ago with the problem I'm
having, usually happening with the old real player but also with some winamp
output plug-ins. So I'm surprised that it's happening and I know my
settings are right. Jaws is set to allow other audio and my players are no
different than they've always been. But whether it's Jaws 16 or 18--the 2 I
have on my windows 7 system--if I play an audio file and use Jaws, the Jaws
volume goes down super low. I don't have loud volume on my media players
mostly because I want to work with other programs while listening to music.
But as soon as an audio file starts I can barely hear Jaws.  The file stops;
Jaws comes right back up to the right volume. This is a dell system with
real tech high definition, and between Jaws going out and the shaky type
sound of the files I don't know if it's sound card or external speakers or
maybe Jaws needs repair? And it's no respecter of media players--VLC,
Winamp and Windows Media Player all cause Jaws to lower volume.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Joanne

I have a Logitech Webcam - actually I have two one for each computer -
that works absolutely flawlessly on Skype and Facetime and it must do
because others comment on the video the camera is capturing.

The camera has facial recognition and can auto focus - follow a face
  around a room - apparently.

I don't use any extra software, I know the camera does install some
drivers or whatever but Skype and Facetime seem to handle the rest of
  everything.

Audio is first-class through the logitech camera which has two built-in
microphones - one each side of the lense - and extra circuitry to
capture sounds around a room and block echo, it actually works believe
it or not and the blocking is the best I've heard apart from my Pollycom
Hands free desktop conference phone and the Gigaset DX800A desktop phone.

Camera is worth around $90 and is easy to set up, just place on a shelf
or on top of your monitor - on a tripod if you like -, plug into a USB
  port and away you go.

I don't create play lists, tag files or use anyplug ins.

All I do is make Winamp my default audio player and either press the enter

I got a copy of Winamp Version 5.... and installed it and straight away

Or am I wrong?

Any advice would be verry very welcome.

Very best wishes.

I have many interests and hobbies and obviously some of these are radio,

Yes indeed and I’ve just chosen my gift, the B T7 Bluetooth Speaker, I’ve
heard it often enough so now time to own one.
The B T7 is - in my view without a doubt - one of the best Bluetooth
speakers to own and - whilst a little more expensive then some - its not
outrageously so, in Australia the B T7 retails for $549 so I reckon it
would be around two thirds of that in the U.S.
Naturally the B T7 has AptX decoding as standard and a very good battery
life to boot, 19 hours from a full charge.

Anyhow I’ll write more about the product when it arrives.

Is this still round?

Where could something like this be obtained?

Hi!

I'm surprised Cortana hasn't been mentioned here
at all, for those who don't know Cortana is the
search facility in Windows 10 which combines
Voice Recognition to search for and accomplish tasks.

I use Cortana from time to time but for some
reason I don't feel as comfortable using Cortana
on my Windows Desktop as I do using Google on one of my Android devices.

In my view Google products have a strangle hold
on the Voice Recognition game but having said
all that its early days for Cortana and we're
going to see a lot of development in this area
from all sorts of players and perhaps we'll even
see Apple with their SIRI catch up in this area too.

I've been able to have Cortana open Apps on my
computer, tell me the time and current
temperature in different locations and have
Cortana open various web sites but I haven't
really been able to get much further than that.

I tried to have Cortana send an eMail but I was
told I didn't have an eMail account configured
which isn't quite correct, I use Mozilla
Thunderbird on the Desktop PC and - whilst
Cortana has no problem whatever in opening
Thunderbird when commanded - it must rely on an
Outlook Email account or something similar set up, that's my assumption anyway.

Surprisingly I haven't been able to get Cortana
to "Call" numbers and this struck me as very odd
given I have Skype, a Microsoft product
installed on the system. When I asked Cortana
to "Call 123 4567" I was told that, "Sorry, I
can't call anyone on this system".

So there we are, my few cents worth on
Cortana. Besides the voice recognition features
is the search feature from the keyboard which I
just wouldn't be without and of course I've been using this since Windows 7.

I've experienced this same oddity with the AppleTV 4th and 5th Gen.
It's like VoiceOver activates starting at volume 0 and then it
automatically raises the volume to the level set in settings after a
few seconds has elapsed. Once it stops speaking (It's silent for at
least 5 seconds) the volume automatically decreases down to level 0.
It's like VoiceOver is in sleep mode waiting for a command to speak
something. I'm not even sure if Apple realizes this quirk happens
with VoiceOver on the AppleTV.

I don't experience this at all on my iPod.

our newer TV, I have determined that there is an issue with
voiceover cutting out when there isn't already audio playing through
the sound bar. That is, if there is a TV show or some music or
whatever going through the Apple TV to the sound bar, and I use the
included remote or a Bluetooth keyboard to move around on the Apple

Voiceover does not cut out. However, if there is no audio streaming
through the sound bar from the Apple TV, then voiceover does cut out
and the first words are always missed. Someone on an Apple related
list said he had the same problem and solved it by using a Bluetooth
headset. The only Bluetooth headset I have is a single ear piece
Plantronics, probably about five years old, which I use on my iPhone
when I'm out. This guy thinks that the issue is some kind of energy

Howdy folks

I have a friend whose interested in getting a digital recorder, she
doesn't have an iPhone, at least not yet. She would prefer to spend no
more than $100 to $120 tops, and since she's also blind it would have to

someone go through the menus and learn them that way. Is there such a
recorder? I remember back in he early 2000s, there were lots of
recorders that you could use and they were really accessible, they were
great for podcasting. I'm not sure if such recorders exist nowadays,

Hi everyone,

My friend Jay is trying to build a playlist in Win amp. But, for some
reason, files keep playing automatically when they're not supposed to.

Here's what he does:

1. He presses l to open the add file to playlist dialog

2. Navigates to the drive and folder where the file of interest is
located

3. Presses enter on the filename.

When he presses enter on the file he wants to add to the list, the file is
added to the playlist like normal, however, the weird thing is that it
starts playing automatically. This is not supposed to happen. Also, if two
or more files are in the playlist, only one of them is actually showing. The
first file in the list shows, but files 2 and beyond don't show in the list.
Any ideas as to how he can fix this? Thanks.

Listers,

Please search your memories and tell me if you have encountered this problem.
But before I get to the problem, which might be obvious by this question. Is it
possible for an administrator to be able to tell if you are recording a stream
as apposed to simply listening to the stream on a program like Winamp, or any
other player for that matter?

The problem I am having is even after setting a scheduled session for recording
a particular program, TR will record for a few minutes, maybe
20 or 30, and though the recording is continuing, at least it appears that way,
the audio simply stops being input to the potential recorded product.

I have set the program up to reconnect to the stream in an unlimited fashion,
but this simply does no good, I still rarely get a complete recording, at least
not for the past few weeks.

This is a recent Phenomena. I have been making weekly recordings of this
program for many years, and have never experienced anything quite like this.

If anybody could please give me any insight into just what might be taking
place here, it would really be greatly appreciated. It really has me pulling
what is left of my hair completely out!

Sure hope to hear from someone soon, this is maddening!

Again, these are strictly set top boxes, more like the Apple tv in that

They can convert m4v files for you. The only downside to using this site, is
that if you have lots of m4v files, you'll have to upload them one at a

select what format you'd like it to be converted to, type in your email

that you can download to your computer. Hope this helps. Oh by the way, it

Ok, I do realize this question has probably been posted to the list
several times, but I'm looking for something more specific.

I'm looking for a totally accessible MP3 Tag Editor that works via
the "Right Mouse Click" menu of Windows Explorer.

So say I'm looking through a list stored on my PC using Windows
Explorer. I come across a MP3 song I enjoy listening too, but doesn't
have any MP3 tag information associated with it.

So I would like to be able to simply Right Mouse Click the file. Then
select something that says "Retrieve Tag Info." The software would
then appear and automatically search for songs matching the file's
naming structure "Artist - Song Title" in a song search engine
database (Amazon, Google, whatever.) I can arrow down the list of
matches and select one I feel fits the best and then simply click
Apply or "Save Tag Info" and then I'm done.

Can someone here please recommend a Paid or Free application that
works this way? My reason for wanting my MP3 songs properly tagged is
that it makes it much easier to categorize them in iTunes. Thanks.

By the way, I'm using the latest build of JAWS 17 under Windows 7 (64
bit) and a TripleTalk USB hardware synth.

I'm looking forward to the ability to install/use apps on the 4G version.

I have a SAMNet (System Access Mobile Network)
membership and love the descriptive video service
they offer. Use the iOS iBlink radio app to connect to my SAMNet account.

Get tired of watching/listening to Descriptive TV
shows and movies on my little iPod. Being able to
use my TV would be so nice thanks to the new 4G Apple TV. Can't wait!

Amazing how much I thoroughly enjoy TV shows and
movies now having the various scenes audibly
described (Just watched Ant Man this past Friday.)

At 06:46 PM 12/12/2015, you wrote:

Exactly that.

In Australia at least not only is the new 4G
Apple TV being sold but the 3G is also available.

There is quite a difference and the first
notable difference is in price, the Apple 3G TV
is around $110 Australian whereas the 4G 64GB version is around $350.

What’s the difference between the 2
generations? the 4G supports Apps - similar to
how an iPhone or iPad does - but the 3G
doesn’t however you can still purchase TV
episodes and so on from the iTunes store, use an
accessible version of Netflix, stream your
Music, listen to Radio Stations and use
Voiceover, no Siri with the 3G version
unfortunately but some might still consider the
3G version an absolute bargain, I know I do and
- now that I know that both 3G and 4G versions
are available - I’ll wait a little longer,
save a bit more and buy both Gens, can put one in the den for example.

And a final word with regard to the Apple TV 4G,
I notice that Pandora have released an App so I can’t wait to see that.

I honestly don’t know the answer to that question, the Microphone itself would
be I should think given the various patterns that can be used but the output of

Perhaps someone else here might have more knowledge on this point than I do as

failing an external synth route your speech to either a USB headset or USB
speaker For example, on
my desktop JAWS is on a dedicated USB speaker which allows me to run music and
what have you through
my primary sound card and send that audio to my stereo unmolested by speech.
When I do the live
webcast I route JAWS to my primary soundcard with SPL off on its own USB device
and plug an earphone
in so that speech does not enter the data stream.

Hi. I was asked to check this out from a user point of view and didn't find
it accessible. I was
asked on behalf of a charity project to play around with pre-uploaded music
files and didn't find
the free version much use. This guy wanted to upload audio files for the
public to play such as
info regarding government benefits etc. I'll paste my response to that guy
below so you will see my
experience. Walter.

Hi Glyn. Firstly my apology; I was going through my deleted items, clearing
them out when I came
across your email. somehow it went straight to my deleted items rather than my
in box. I would
have replied sooner if I had seen it so sorry about that.

OK. This is my initial input regarding the site. The music is displayed
clearly and the play
button is easy to find and activate but that is where the simplicity ends and
the problems begin.
Once you have activated the play button and the music plays, there is no way
you can use the other
play controls because the music drowns out the screen reader and as there is no
keyboard short cut
keys trying to use them is a hiding to nothing. You have to wait for a quiet
passage in the audio
before trying frantically to find a control but the quiet period never lasts
long enough for you to
find what you want. This is the free version and I noticed there is a Pro
service but I guess you
have to pay for that but there is no way of telling if the pro version is any
more accessible than
the free version and in any case, the people who would want to play any files
you upload would use
the free service. As I've said I've only looked at the site briefly and when I
discovered getting
to the play controls during playback was problematic I didn't go any further.
As with WMP, if there
were short cut keys such as
Control+s for stop or Control+p for pause or control+m for mute
Control+or+control
+r for rewind then it would be a good service to utilise. It might be
+you
can map the keyboard and create these shortcuts but I'd need to look further
into the site and I'll
do that as soon as I can. Of course this initial summery is from a blind point
of view. People
with hearing loss or other disabilities but who have site, or even some
partially sighted folk would
be able to use it. Unfortunately though if you have no usable sight and in the
absence of play
controls accessibility then it wouldn't be of any use to them. Nonetheless you
have to consider the
majority of people who would use the facility and a minority group shouldn't be
allowed to veto
something because they are disenfranchised; you can please all of the people
some of the time and
some of the people all of the time but you will never please all of the people
all of the time.
This doesn't mean that solutions aren't sought to resolve the
disenfranchisement and that might be
by linking to another service. I will ask on the tech lists I'm on to see what
can be done and will
get back to you. Walter.

Subject line says it all and I've been exploring the new recorder for a
couple of days though a big part of me does prefer my older Olympus DM4
and I'm still quite happy to use the faithful and most reliable Zoom H1
which I've had for around 5 years now.

I think what surprised me is the striking differences between the two
Olympus recorders, I know we did have a discussion on the differences
between the two machines on list a while back but actually comparing the
two physically side by side? Well I wasn't quite prepared for the shock.

The DM7 along with its looks does throw up some new ways of doing things
obviously, the control layout tells you that.

I think the internal speaker of the DM7 sounds quite a bit nicer than
  does the DM4.

I haven't as yet set up the Wi-Fi and I probably won't bother given its
limited use, that's a shame as the potential for that function is huge!
the hardware is there so why not go all the way and have access to an
Internet Radio Database or podcasting Database service? Perhaps I'm
talking about a future Olympus machine.

Hi!

John, for some reason subject lines aren’t appearing in the eMail you send
to the list so perhaps you might like to check your eMail client at your
convenience to try and work out what’s going on.

regarding your Victor Reader Stream with these Headphones? I don’t own one
of the latest generation of Streams but I did own one of the previous
generation and the audio quality was pretty decent through the headphone
output when it came to music, I’ve no reason to doubt that the later
generation would be the same if not better and I’ve heard others give me
encouraging reports on this subject, some people say that the audio from the
headphone output of the stream is far better than that of the iPhone and
that wouldn’t take too much to be honest so yep, enjoy your P7’s with your
Stream.

Hi!

I'm sorry if it is off putting, but right now there's not much I can do.
Until recently I used Outlook express which worked well for me allowing to

live mail and I'm still skating with it.

At some point if I can I will go back to Outlook, but I'm no computer

Hi!

John, for some reason subject lines aren’t appearing in the eMail you send
to the list so perhaps you might like to check your eMail client at your
convenience to try and work out what’s going on.

regarding your Victor Reader Stream with these Headphones? I don’t own one
of the latest generation of Streams but I did own one of the previous
generation and the audio quality was pretty decent through the headphone
output when it came to music, I’ve no reason to doubt that the later
generation would be the same if not better and I’ve heard others give me
encouraging reports on this subject, some people say that the audio from
the headphone output of the stream is far better than that of the iPhone
and that wouldn’t take too much to be honest so yep, enjoy your P7’s with
your Stream.

Subject: Bose and B

Hi there!

Firstly can you please use some sort of subject line so so others may easily
follow the conversation.

I assume you’re talking about comparing the B headphones with the Bose? I
had a feeling someone would ask this question and yes, I’ve done some
comparisons and offer my comments below, I’d be interested in other views on
this too.

Headphones as far as I can tell fall into 3 main groups, the general
standard type, the crowd pleasers and the audiophile type headphones.

The general headphones are the run of the mill stuff that you buy from say
$10 upwards to $50

There are some bargains to be had here but as a general rule if you want to
hear a top sound for music listening then these headphones aren’t as good as
others up the price change, good enough for most people perhaps.

I’ve certainly heard some nice sounds in this price range from the likes of
TDK, JBL etc.

Then you have the crowd pleasers from the likes of Bose, they have a bass
rich sound but often this swamps the mid-range and to an extent the top
frequency’s in a musical track but a lot of people like this sort of sound,
Beats are famous for doing much the same.

Then we come to the top of the line audiophile stuff from Sehneiser, Grado
Labs, the top Sony stuff, B, AKG etc, these cans are deliberately designed
to enrich the musical experience when listening to them.

When you listen to your favourite music you should enjoy its clarity to the
full, these headphones are designed so you can hear the attack of the piano,
the effects of the guitar, the silkiness of the strings, the whispered words
in some tracks and so on.

As I say, the notes I’ve written above are just general thoughts I have and
there are exceptions which I’ve noted here too, some of the cheaper
headphones really give you bang for your buck but you do have to look
around, do your research etc.

If you’re on a budget and you want a good set of cans that come very close
to audiophile spec then you will be astounded at the sound given by the
Grado Labs SR60I, think they’re around $75 US dollars.

Build quality isn’t superb and no, they’re going to sound rather quiet on an
iPhone, Note4 etc on their own through the standard headphone jack but they
do have the sound that’s pretty much unbeaten given what they’re worth.

Howdy!

Yes I’ve heard it said that these headphones can be a little uncomfortable
over a long period of time listening, I’ve not experienced this yet myself
and that’s most likely because I don’t usually listen to headphones more
than an hour at a time before a small break so perhaps that makes a
difference.

It should also be noted that the P7’s are not on the ear headphones but
rather go over the ear thus they’re closed and noise isolating so the only
thing you’re going to hear when these cans are placed on the head is the
source connected to them.

As far as lightning connector Amps go? I’m sure they’re around, I’ll have a
look and see what I can find.

Its been a good while since I used an IOS device so I’m not up-todate in the
world if Lightning Connectors and Headphone amps but I’d be most surprised
if one didn’t exist, the Amp I used was the old 30 pin Dock connector type
model but worked well, I’ll write back to the list when I find a model so
that probably won’t take me all that long, a chat with my friend Google is
on the cards definitely for this exercise .

Anyway keep enjoying your P7’S as I’m doing.

I've looked into headphone amps before, but couldn't find one with a
lightning connection for my iPhone6. There is one with the older Apple
connection but I couldn't find any for newer devices and I didn't want to
use the headphone jack as it would just pass on the faults of the built in
DAC. I would be interested if anyone has come across ssuch a thing.

Yeah and actually the more I think about it it's true. I heard some BNW
speakers once on youtube and even threw the guy's not so good camera they
sounded epic. This person was playing the ship fight at the end of A New
Hope and the X Wings were clearer then I've ever heard them. Keep in mind
this is on youtube and threw a meh camera, so how must those speakers
sound in actual life? I want them homy. Thing is that they were several
thousand dolars. So yeah I know these people make good epic stuff. But you
can't necessarily judge 1 product by another. Especially a cheeper 1 by 1
that is several thousands.

I don t its a question of what s best, everyone likes different things.
The question here is about good value for money and good headphones for
the price.

As I initially stated, - in my view - the B P7 certainly give you that
for their money, great and natural speaker type sound, incredible tough
build, luxury finish etc.

Downloading MusicHi All,

Finally looking to join 21st century, although did have vinyl out last

Rather than buying CD's, ripping them and putting them in a box in the
loft, looking for recommendation of simple MP3 download site that is
good value and accessible.

Whilst I use an I phone I have no interest in I tunes.

Thanks for your thoughts

Subject lines [was Re: Taking The Punt On A New Device]

2012-01-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, IMHO you use bad subject lines at your own risk. Depending on
which mail client I use, I'll sometimes only use the subject line to
determine if I'm going to read the message or just delete it. Others on
the list have said the same thing and the description of the list is
pretty clear that using good subject lines and changing the subject line
when the thread changes is expected. If you want some help or you want a
question answered then it's in your best interest to make the subject
line as meaningful as possible.

I don't think the RAR example is a good one since I think the originator
was confused and didn't realize that the RAR file type indicated a
archive and not a compressed audio format. Maybe that subject line
should have been changed, but since the subsequent responses had to do
with which tools to use to unpack the RAR file, I'm not so sure that was
necessary, although I have to admit, I don't remember the subject line
anymore.

Besides, just because someone else chooses to use a poor subject line
doesn't mean that it's then OK for everyone else to do it! Instead of
perpetuating a mistake, you could set an example instead! :-)

On 08/01/12 18:53, Dane Trethowan wrote:
I don't think I'll bother about the subject line, no worse than others

Anyway to other matters of far more importance.

An online seller with whom I do regular business with today offered
me a USB FM/AM/DAB/DAB+/TV Tuner USB stick for $25.00 Australian
Dollars including delivery to my door.

To me this was an offer I couldn't refuse, even if I can't get the
beast working under Window-Eyes which I'm sorry to say will be most
likely I'm suresmile then at least I can try another approach or
at the very worst! it will make a very nice gift for someone who can
 make use of it.

Now I'm going to give Twitter a mention again because its come to my
rescue, no sooner did I mention that I'd bought one of these tuner
sticks then I received quite a few messages from people who use
Screen reading technology who own these devices, it seems that users
of JAWS 13 have no trouble using the Tuner Stick whatever thanks to
the OCR technology employed, they can see the channels and therefore
click on the one they wish to listen to, record etc so that's neat!

The software supplied with the Tuner does not I'm told have any
keyboard shortcuts which is a shame and seems to be very poorly
written however users of Windows 7 can take full advantage of the
tuner by using the Windows Media centre.

I also heard of others who have used this Tuner under LYNUX quite
successfully, it would appear that LYNUX is the best operating
 environment for this tuner.

Anyway I'll keep the list informed of my progress with this device,
should have it this time next week.

more on .avi to data DVD subject

2009-02-10 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos

Let us know if that worked for you by using Nero to make a data DVD from those
.avi files you have and then using your home DVD player to play them back. I
sure didn't know this was possible to make them play on home DVD player.
Usually you have to convert the .avi files to DVD using a converter program.
Why are you using a DVD RW disc? You should only use a DVD -R or +R blank disc.
Most players now support both disc types but check your manual to be sure of
this.

If you have Replay AV 8 latest version you get Replay Converter application
which will do the .avi conversion to DVD NTSC (USA, Canada and some other
countries). I know the program is accessible because I use it and am a beta
tester for them. I use JAWS 10. These .avi files how did you obtain them? From
a camera?

You can also do DVD PAL format disc for playback in most other countries with
Replay Converter.

Applian makes Replay AV which comes bundled with Replay Converter. They have 30
day money back guarantee if it doesn't work for you the video conversions to
DVD disc.

Here's an old message that appeared on Blindtech about the original
machine. I stress that this message refers to the original unit, so I
agree we'll have to wait to see if the player itself is any more
accessible than the original which, according to this message,
concentrates on giving the illusion of reading a hard copy book. The
fact the last person who posted info on this saw only information about
speech output and references to flipping pages, and nothing about access
to the unit by the blind, I'd tend to doubt it has anything more than
the Stream has to recommend it for us; but it will be interesting to see
if I am proven right or wrong.

Subject: Re: Kindle reader

As far as I'm aware, the Kindle has no TTS, so there is nothing to speak
the menus or print books on the device. It is an Audible-ready device
and will play mp3 files, but if one is going to spend the price of a
Kindle then the VR Stream is in the price range and would provide
significantly more usability to a blind person. The VR Stream is also
Audible-ready and plays mp3 files as well as ogg vorbis and unprotected
WMA files. More importantly, it has TTS to speak the menus and navigate
the files.

The Kindle was primarily designed to be an E-text reader and that's
where its strength and popularity lies. I'm told by sighted folks that
have seen or own a Kindle that the screen really does give the person
the feeling that they are reading a printed book. I understand it has
the largest screen of any of the current E-text readers and that it
really does an amazing job of looking like a printed page rather than an
electronic screen. But that superior technology does nothing for a blind
person. If you just want a device to listen to audiobooks, then there
are many other much, much less expensive options available.

Now, if you have some usable vision and want to be able to read printed
material, then perhaps the Kindle would be a device worth looking at
just for the reasons I stated above: It has one of the largest screens
and has been designed to be very easy on the eyes. I also understand its
font enlargement capability is very good too.

Hope this helps.

 Good morning, Tom.

I filter list messages into a separate folder, not my in-box. I vote
 against
putting the list name in the subject line. It's done on another list,
 and
 I
often find it distracts me from the real subject. It means I have to
 keep
filtering the name out of my head when I'm going down a list of
 messages.

I know that however you resolve this question, it will be a carefully
 considered decision.

Late last year I did have the list name in the subject line and got one

 it
makes for easier filtering. If enough list members want it I'll put it
 in.

Hey guys, enough already. Tom has already decided he is not going to mess
with it. I'm sorry I brought it up

I definitely do not want the list name in the subject field. It would mean
taking much more time going through the mail.

 I agree with Jonathan.

Does it really add anything anway?

One would hope that list members are experienced enough not to require
 the
list name in the subject line to tell them what the source of the message
 is.

Oh please God, no! It serves absolutely no useful purpose and just makes
more verbiage to listen through. It's perfectly easy to set up a rule or
filter based on the header for those who want mail from the list to be
 in
 its own folder.

Tom, I'd think this would be a good idea for people that get a lot of
 emails
from various lists. I personally like it as well
