first post: best mp3 player for a totaly blind user

2014-06-04 Thread Robert Godridge
Hello all.
I'm sorry if this has been discussed loads of times before, I'm new to
the list and unsure how to search passed messages.

I am totaly blind and am looking for an mp3 player. here are a few points.
i am using a sony nwz model at the moment, this is fine but it's only
16 gb. I have about 3 tb of music and collect records, so this is
getting to be not nearly enough even for day to day use, especially if
i go on holidays.
I don't care if it talks or not, in a lot of ways i'd rather it didn't.
I know that you can get big takling ipods, but I don't think I like
those too much.
The most important thing for me is that on my sony I can use the up
and down to go back and forth by album and left and right by track. I
love this feature about it, but I would like something with simple
menues so that if I so wish I can put it on shuffle for a while.

Do you folks have any suggestions to check out?
sorry for the long post!
Rob.

can you use a sd card with that player? the reason i ask is if you like
it that much, you could keep it and just buy a bunch of sd cards if it
lets you do that.

Unfortunately not. I don't think so anyway, I see no sd card slot on it.
I would highly recommend it to any other blind users, but I would
really like something a bit bigger. there is a 32 gb model, but it is
aparrently not as accessable as it's touch screan. can anyone conferm
this?

Yes, I do have a Milestone 312, what I like best is its size, very small,
but yet with good sound and also that it plays US Library of Congress NLS
BARD books. It has a 15-hour battery, 1 GB internal memory and it takes an
SD card of up to 32 GB. Pretty good recording and text-to-speech
capabilities. It has no wi-fi and thus no internet radio, but it has AM-FM
radio.

I'll have a look at that Milestone 312, how much does it hold by defalt?
do you have one, Humberto, and if so what do you like best about it?
reply off list if you'd rather.

Yeah, that ez thing sounds amazing!
but the price tag on it is bound to be enormous, so it might not be an
option rite away and to be honest as I do quite a bit of travelling

Hi Robert,

If you just want to play your music files and not access files from
NLS, Bard, read EBooks, access things from the internet, do OCR, etc,
then a rockboxed Sansa is all you really need.

You can hear what the Talking MP3 players are like and what they can
do by downloading or listening to this file:

http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/an-introduction-to-talking-mp3-players/

This would be perfect for your needs as you can use 64GB cards to
store your entire music library.

It will also read web pages

Are there any comparison articles regarding the Bookport, BookCourier, and
Milestone mp3 players, since they are the leading accessible mp3 players out
there? What are the advantages or disadvantages that make each one
different, for instance? They all cost about the same price.

Just my opinion here. Don't waste your money on MP3
players/recorders made specifically for the sighted user. Buy
the Book Port from APH. I use this device everyday to listen to
podcasts and other media I download. I transfer the recordings
Replay AV makes for me to the Book Port. You do not have to
worry about what menu your on as the Book Port reads all the
folders and files to you through your headphones. Uses double A
batteries. I hear that there's a chance for a newer Book Port
unit. Is this true? I would love to see the new BP to have a
better recorder and smaller body. Support for WMA and WMA DRM
would be awesome. Petro

The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi everyone!
A very interesting thread this one but (for my needs at least) the
Bookport doesn't seem to be the best MP3 player but it is by no means
the only accessible mp3 player around. Take for example my Nokia N70
mobile phone using the Talks software, no trouble whatsoever
accessing the MP3 music player on that and no trouble whatsoever
transferring files to the phone from my computers or downloading them
from the net as the phone is both USB and bluetooth compatible, its a
WCDMA phone so you have the added benefit of broad-band internet
speeds for uploading and downloading, I've been using this little
beauty for ten months.
Then of course there is my Iriver 340 which I've had for nearly 2
years now which has served me well with its ability to record, its
ease of upgrading to thigns such as Rockbox and the like etc.
Then I have my CD Players here which will play MP3 files and so it
goes on.
Well I looked at the Bookport and I have to admit it looks very nice
particularly if you're wanting to read allot of books etc but the
only downlside for my needs at least was the fact that I couldn't
find out whether this device could record say from a line-in audio
source, quite frankly for the amount of money I'd be paying for one
of these things I'd expect that to be part and parcel of the machine
but I do understand and respect the fact that everyone's needs are
different to everyone elses so therefor I'm reluctant to knock any
one product in favour of another.

RE: The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

Just my two cents worth on this also ...

I would rather go to the trouble of converting a .txt book into mp3 with a
reasonable sapi 5 voice than suffer listening to the very robotic sounding
speech of the bookport.

Sure technology has improved somewhat since the 1980s since that type of
speech was used?

only downlside for my needs at least was the fact that I couldn't
find out whether this device could record say from a line-in audio
source, quite frankly for the amount of money I'd be paying for one
of these things I'd expect that to be part and parcel of the machine
but I do understand and respect the fact that everyone's needs are
different to everyone elses so therefor I'm reluctant to knock any

Petro

Hi Dane,
The Bookport doesn't record from line in from what I remember. It does
internal mic. I read up about it a while back, before I found out about
rockbox. Apparently they're coming out with a new unit, so it might be
part of that one.

2006-12-09 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi,
Too bad I didn't know BookPort was supporting OGG. If I'd have known, I
might have saved my money and coughed up the extra 70 or more dollars to
buy it instead of my X5. Probably not, though. I'm happy with 20GB of
rechargeable hard drive, playing DVD's and AAC files. I've got Kurzweil,
so converting most books to MP3 is a matter of half an hour.
I think, and I'm not starting a war over this, or not intending to, that
Rockbox is the way to go for MP3 players.

Hi again,
Now that I think about it, a daisy player for the smartphones shouldn't
be too far off at all. There are ones for the Pac Mate, which is
basically the pocket PC platform, and if you have a phone that runs on
that it should almost be able to be installed. As for phones like the
n70 and such that run on the simbion, I thought there already was one. I
could be wrong but I remember reading somewhere or hearing on a podcast
about a daisy reader for the phone.

but
the BookPort has an extra row of buttons which enables it to perform
additional tasks, such as its Braille notetaking features. The
BookCourier

I'll keep an eye on that then. There was something else available,
can't think of the name of it now but it was quite an impressive
little box of tricks, it played and recorded to flash memory and you
could edit your recordings, transferring them to CD using the built-
in CD drive, it spoke as well and you could even create your own
daisy formatted material if you wanted to.

work like the NFB reader, that is you hold the phone over a page of
text and press the camera button butt one thing at a time as I'm
going off-topic.

Hi again,
Now that I think about it, a daisy player for the smartphones shouldn't
be too far off at all.

Now if I could have a phone that could do that plus have a daisy

 that would be just right.

 Subject: The best MP3 player

2006-12-09 Thread Caroline Ford
This could well have been the Plextalk PTR2 player/recorder. I haven't used
one myself, but Brian Hartgen who produces an audio magazine here in the UK,
thinks very highly of it. It costs around 575 pounds, I think, which is
about twice the price of the Iriver H340.

 Subject: Best MP3 Player

Petro

Ok, first question I have about this, I'm assuming that it can
record, how much RAM do you have at your disposal?

I would check the Access World archives at www.afb.org. I would
think they would have done a comparison sometime. HTH
