Cheapest portable player to play audible.com .aa books

2013-01-21 Thread Dujari, Prateek
Hello gang.
the player I'm looking for is for a sighted person so accesibility to blind is
irrelevant.
What are some of the least expensive most basic portable players out there that
can play .aa audio books from audible.com?

2013-01-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
Audible has a list of all the players that support its books. The list
comes up anytime you download Audible management software. I assume that a
player that isn't on that list will not be compatible.

audible.com help/converting books to MP3

2008-09-04 Thread Joanne
First, I wasn't sure which to download--Audible Download Manager or Audible
Manager--when purchasing my first book. Not being sure I first downloaded
Audible Download Manager but found it confusing and wasn't sure where in Media
Player to find my file or how even to get into the player itself. So I
downloaded Audible Manager, which is on desktop and it says you can use its
player or Windows Media. Well I did get it to play with the Audible player and
I do like the way it continues from where you left off when you re-open Audible
Manager. But I don't know the hot keys as far as forwarding, rewinding and
using volume on this player and wouldn't mind help there.

But what I'd also like help with is being able to somehow convert Audible books
into MP3's so they can be played in Winamp. I know that somehow they convert
to small files and these files end in mid-sentence, but I do prefer Winamp and
am hoping someone can show me how to convert books to MP3.

Thanks.

There are four Audible formats. While format 4 is based on the MP3
format, you are not getting standard protected MP3's. Audible does not
provide its books in standard MP3 format.

Hi,

Grab an older version of goldwave or google for Sound Taxi platinum as both

You have to pay for sound taxi but Goldwave is free for 50,000 commands.

Another source for some of the same and other material is
http://www.audiobookstand.com It's encoded in drm wmp. You can also
buy books on cd or tape. They don't offer the same kind of reader
plans, but the prices aren't too bad and there's always lots of stuff
on sale.

Re: The quality of books from audible.com

2008-08-08 Thread Dave McLean
I've been a member for 8 years and I think the audio generally is good. Are
you using format 4 as your download format?
If you use one of the lower formats such as 2 or 3 the audio isn't very
good.
It could also be that you're downloading an old book and sometimes they're
only available in the lower formats (bit rates).

 Hi!

What to users of http://www.audible.com think of the quality of audio
books on the site? I have to admit to being a little disappointed that
the quality was as low as it was, I've written to Audible about this
and I hope that perhaps they may make higher quality encoded material
available at some stage, I for one wouldn't mind paying a little
more. I cancelled my membership but I still have my account on the
site as the service itself is a great one and I'm hoping that it will
 get even better over time.

Go with the Audible player. It doesn't take over your PC like Itunes and
it's totally accessible with either screen reader.

Hi larry, there is an Audible Desktop Player that will allow you to read
Audible content on your PC. A number of portable devices support Audible,
including PAC mate, The Olympus DS30/40/50, and plenty of others.

Media players and audible.com books?

2006-08-20 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, besides using real player that supports audible book. com books are there
any other players that can be used? I tried windows media player, and winamp
but, it doesn't acknowledge the files due to the AA extension. The reason I
want to use something other than real player is so that I could adjust the
speed of the voice from fast to normal or slow like you can do with windows
media player. Any help is greatly appreciated. Andy.

When I go into Audible Manager, I can select Edit from the file menu
andchoose the Options ... item. In the Desktop Playback page, I can
select Audible's Desktop Playback application, Real Player or Windows
Media Player. I'm not sure what this will do if you try to access a .aa
file directly, but it works through Audible Manager.

hi All,

I have been a member of audible.com for some time. I don't

Whenever I upgrade
winamp, it takes over trying to play those files. It can't
play them. The
only way I have found around this is to unselect all
filetypes in Winamp,
which defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.
Does anyone know
what filetypes I need to uncheck so that Winamp won't try
and play my
audible files?

My other question concerns the portability of these files.
I do not have an
mp3 player at this time, so I have been burning them onto
audio cd. The
problem is that I often get this horrible crackling noise in
the disk. Many
of my disks are impossible to listen to. I do have a cd
player that will
play mp3's. Can I convert the audible files to mp3 without
burning them
onto audio first? I could then get several books on one
disk, and that
would be quite handy. I'm open to ideas. Thanks.

hi All,

I have been a member of audible.com for some time. I don't
have any trouble
getting books, but I do have a couple of questions.
Whenever I upgrade
winamp, it takes over trying to play those files. It can't
play them. The
only way I have found around this is to unselect all
filetypes in Winamp,
which defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.
Does anyone know
what filetypes I need to uncheck so that Winamp won't try
and play my
audible files?

My other question concerns the portability of these files.
I do not have an
mp3 player at this time, so I have been burning them onto
audio cd. The
problem is that I often get this horrible crackling noise in
the disk. Many
of my disks are impossible to listen to. I do have a cd
player that will
play mp3's. Can I convert the audible files to mp3 without
burning them
onto audio first? I could then get several books on one
disk, and that
would be quite handy. I'm open to ideas. Thanks.

Preferrably this player should be somewhat accessible.

Suggestions please!

2005-12-08 Thread Sarah Heesen
Yeah, they just changed it this week. You still download from your library,
only there aren't 'archived programs or 'heard programs' links. Your titles
are all there on the library page. Mark the checkboxes next to the titles
of everything you want to download. The download link is down toward the
bottom of the page, and it will download all the titles you've checked at
once. Also, be sure to check the combo boxes at the end of all the links
related to each book. These are the audio-format boxes -- and the format is
automatically set at the largest format.

Hope it works. ... and Oh, yeah! The download window is Java, and I still
can't get that to work. Hope you have better luck.

I don't think this is the right list to answer you on. Go to the
blind audible listeners list on Yahoogroups and ask. You're right,
they have changed the site to something totally new, so knowing the
old site and ways of doing things won't do you any good. It's not

fwd: Audible.com article from USA Today

2004-06-06 Thread Norma A. Boge
Its books are never out of stock
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES - Audible.com has some of the most loyal fans on the Internet.
There just haven't been enough of them for the provider of audio book
downloads
to turn a profit.
Don Katz, CEO of Audible Inc., in the company's Wayne, N.J., headquarters.
By Jeff Zelevansky, AP
But Audible, founded in 1997, is poised to make money this year because of
the increased penetration of MP3 players such as the Apple iPod and a recent
Audible deal to sell book downloads at Apple's iTunes Music Store. Audible
also is close to proving that digital media can be more than just stealing
music,
movie and TV files in dorm rooms and dens.
Audible will sell what's expected to be the year's literary equivalent of a
blockbuster movie - Bill Clinton's My Life. The company will make it
available
on June 22 at 3:01 a.m. ET.
Unlike a conventional bookstore, where as many as 10,000 buyers might show
up for a best seller, Audible CEO Donald Katz says, We will never be out of
stock.
That's because Audible needs only one copy of a book on hand - a digital
file that is copied by customers to PCs and moved to MP3 players or CDs.
Clinton, in his first public appearance for the book, will deliver a keynote
address tonight in Chicago at BookExpo America, a gathering of 25,000 book
sellers. Audible will offer the speech free as a download by midnight ET.
This follows another recent freebie: former counter-terrorism official
Richard
Clarke's testimony to the Sept. 11 commission. That produced 100,000
downloads and many new customers, Katz says.
The $800 million audiobook market has been growing steadily. Revenue is up
15% this year from 2003, says the Audio Publishers Association. But the idea
of downloading a book was ahead of its time when Audible struggled through
its early years, says Mark Argento, an analyst with securities firm
Think-Equity
Partners.
There were too few MP3 player owners, he says. The turnaround came last
year, with the smash success of the iPod. Now, the story starts to get
really interesting.
Audible's annual revenue has grown to $19.3 million last year from $9.1
million in 2001. Argento projects 2004 revenue will grow to $30.6 million.
The company
has 115,000 subscribers. Argento sees the number growing to 500,000 by 2006.
Katz is a former journalist (Esquire and Rolling Stone) and non-fiction
author (The Big Store: Inside the Crisis and Revolution at Sears). He says
Audible's
short life has been anything but a cakewalk. It went dark for three days
after the Sept. 11 attacks because its servers were stored near the World
Trade
Center. They had to be reclaimed and moved.
ALL ABOUT AUDIBLE
 Founded: 1997
 Based: Wayne, N.J.
Sells: Spoken-word digital downloads. Offers more than 6,000 books, 22,000
radio programs and audio editions of newspapers and magazines. Best sellers
include The Da Vinci Code and Plan of Attack.
Prices: $14.95 for one book a month; $19.95 for two books. Buyers also can
shop a la carte: The Narrows by Michael Connelly is $24.95 at Audible for
the
unabridged version, vs. $25.15 for audiotapes at Amazon.com.
Discounts: Audible takes $100 off the price of an Apple iPod or offers a
free Creative Nomad MuVo MP3 player with a 12-month subscription.
Capacity: Digital audio can fit an average of 315 books on a 15-gigabyte
$299 iPod portable or 51/2 books on the 128-megabyte MuVo.
I was worried we'd decimate our goodwill with customers and that they'd
never return, Katz says. But the business eventually bounced back.
The same goes for Audible's stock. It once sold for as much as $15.50, but
had to leave the Nasdaq exchange when shares fell to a low of 30 cents.
Shares now sell for more than $4 and will be moving back to Nasdaq later
this month. They closed Wednesday at $4.03.
Microsoft and Amazon were early investors, though Microsoft later bailed
out. But new money came from Germany's Bertelsmann - which owns publishing
company
Random House and BMG Music - and from equity fund Apex Venture Partners.
Fans never stopped believing. With Audible, I feel like the world has been
opened up to me, as it never has been before, and I am reveling in it,
Sherry
Gomes says.
Gomes, blind since age 5, had to bring sighted friends to bookstores to read
the back of audio book covers.
With Audible, I can browse, says Gomes, 47, who lives near Denver. She
uses software on her PC that reads aloud text from Web sites and e-mails. I
can
look at the catalog, read the plot summaries - even listen to a sample of
the book if I like. I have access to books I never knew or dreamed could be
available.
Audible has many titles sold by competitors. But there are some holes in its
catalog. For every best seller such as Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Bob
Woodward's Plan of Attack, there are missing best sellers from publishers
who haven't opened to digital distribution. They include the Harry Potter
series
and Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
That hasn't

The books from audible are not mp3's, but you can use goldwave to convert
them to mp3's. Audible uses its own file format, but Sarai is right,
audible is accessible, so long as one knows how to navigate forms and use
one's screen reader's access features.

RE: Questions about audible.com

2004-06-02 Thread rinty
Wrong and fairly wrong. The books are not MP3's, they are encoded, so
that they can't be played on most MP3 players. You used to be able to
convert them to MP3, but not now, because of the latest version of
audible manager.

Audible manager is fairly accessible, though sometimes you have fun
and games downloading stuff.

RE: Questions about audible.com

We sort of had this discussion, and because audible books are
copy-right, Geoff the list owner won't let us discuss this on the
list, he can't really.

Officially you're right. If anyone wants more information, you'd
better email me off list, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can discuss it
there.

Sorry Geoff, I don't want to break the list guidelines, but neither do
I want to knowingly give false information, unlike American
presidents!, smile.
