Still looking for ideas on Real Alternative

2011-02-20 Thread Dave McElroy WA6BEF
I've installed Real Alternative and when I go to sites with real audio
content the program opens but the files do not play; they just remain at
zero. The buttons work, I can hit the spacebar and hear play or pause, but
just no joy.

Any thought anybody?

RE: Problems with Real Alternative

2011-02-05 Thread Dave McElroy WA6BEF
What I actually want to do is to play real player streams from a website,
movieflicks.com as it happens. Am I stuck with Real Player or can I
configure Real Alternative to do this? I noticed in the install it said
that wmp would only play files on the disc, so maybe I'm hosed. What do

If you like Winamp you could try Tara's Real Audio Plugin for Winamp. It is
found at

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Audio_Input_Plugin_for_Winamp.htm
You still need Real Alternative for this to work and there's a download link
for this at the link above. I've downloaded this but have not tried it yet
so can't say how well it works, but sounds like it would be worth a try.

Problem with Real Alternative

2009-02-16 Thread Samuel Wilkins
I am having a problem with Real Alternative. When I click on a sight that has
an imbedded real file, it gives me a message saying a general error has
occurred. When I click on more information, it says that no information is
available. When I go into normal real player, it just says I'm in Media Player
classic and doesn't play. I tried reinstalling Real Alternative and it didn't
work. What is wrong?

help needed with Real Alternative/Media Player Classic

2007-07-22 Thread Vivien Palcic
Hello list,

I recently downloaded and installed Real Alternative from www.whitestick.co.uk
in order to access the on-demand archives of PBS 106.7 FM (www.pbsfm.org.au).
The live stream is in Windows Media, but these archived shows are streamed in
Real format, and I didn't want to install RealPlayer and had read that Real
Alternative could also handle that format. During the installation one of the
components, which was checked by default (and which I left checked), was Media
Player Classic, and when I look for the program on the desktop or within
Programs submenu of Start menu, it's listed as Media Player Classic, not Real
Alternative. The version is 6.4.9.0 (according to the About dialog under the
Help menu). During the installation, there were components/options offered,
which I left in their default state, for the most part, as I simply wasn't sure
of the ramifications - eg. configure for Real Media. (I left this unchecked
because Winamp is my default player and I was concerned about potential
interference with Winamp.) Another option said something like allow for direct
splitting or it might have been allow for directshow splitting (sorry this
is vague, but I can't recall the exact wording). Not knowing what else to do, I
left it checked, but given the problem I'm experiencing now, I'm wondering if
that should have been unchecked and the other one (to do with configuring for
Real Media) should be checked etc. After completing the installation, I later
tried one of the archived episodes of Sunglasses After Dark, one of my
favourite shows on PBS FM, only to find that played the first half of the show
and stopped. (It runs for 2 hours.) Interestingly, when I tried the same
episode the next day, I got the second half, but I wanted to just play the
whole episode from beginning to end. Under the Help menu, both Home Page and
Documentation (sf.net) are offered, but in both cases, I had a frustrating
time trying to find relevant info when pressing Enter and going into the
respective sites. When I try the context-sensitive help in Jaws (Jawskey with
F1), I get:
JAWS may not recognize this control.
To show JAWS what type of control it is, press JAWSKey+7.
To see more technical information on the control, press Control+JAWSKey+F1.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Vivien

If you have Realplayer installed then Real Alternative is a backward step in
players. You shouldn't uninstall Realplayer as Real Alternative can't play
a lot of formats Realplayer can.

Wow! I thought flashing was completely irreversible. I guess if I wanted
 to
play DRM files, I get a cheap player for that purpose only. I heard, all
 be
it more expensive, that the Iaudio X5 also would do DRM files, but not
 sure
it suffers the same affliction when Rockbox is flashed.

Once you flash rockbox, Your DRM capability is pernimantly gone. You
 can
blaime this on DRM as it was written to be virtually tamper proof.

 Bad Microsoft eh?

Does putting the DRM-capable firmware back get the capability back? Or
 does
the Rockbox site really mean permanent when they say that flashing their
software to a 3x series Iriver destroys DRM capability in the sense that
reverting back won't restore that ability.

 Rick,

I do not use any DRM files so won't be able to comment on this.
However, when I next off-load some files I will locate a very large
MP3 file and see how it works with the resume feature. How large of
an MP3 file do you recommend using for this test?
Other than the resume feature, there is no bookmarking feature I am
aware of. By the way, I immediately replaced the original firmware
which required Windows Media Player transfer protocol, with iRiver's
USB mass storage capable firmware. That removes any capability of
loading DRM files. I'll post on the above in a few days.

Well, not sure what you want a player to do besides the basics. I have
previously used an iRiver flash player, ifp 795, and just 2 days ago
got
the
newer version, T30 512 MB flash player. Both have predictable menus
which,
if you are good at memorizing the features you want, you can use it
pretty
effectively. I got one of my kids to change the settings I prefer to
always
stay the same. But, the feature I most enjoy is the playback speed
adjustment. It goes from 0% to 50 percent in 10 percent incriments. It
is
easy to memorize the sequence of buttons. The features I like changed
are:
Fast forward and rewind speed increased from 1x to 6x.
Study mode turned

Does putting the DRM-capable firmware back get the capability back? Or
 does
the Rockbox site really mean permanent when they say that flashing
 their
software to a 3x series Iriver destroys DRM capability in the sense
 that
reverting back won't restore that ability.

Study mode turned on: this changes the forward and rewind buttons so
that
tapping it will not change tracks but will move ahead or back a set
number
of seconds

Kathy,

I know of no way to play RAX files in Winamp. And, I'm not certain you can
even play them with Real alternative.

The only reason I considered real alternative was that I was told I could
use it to select a different output soundcard than the windows default card.
Well, yes, you can select a different output card. But, I found, no matter
which card I selected, the output still came through the default card, as if
the selector weren't actually selecting anything. so, I said, To Hell with
Real alternative, and went back to the *real* Realplayer.

since it's hard to find hot keys with real alternative, if I should just go

Re: real alternative volume controls

2006-06-06 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi Joanne and list,
Joanne, to answer your first question, I don't use the media player
classic hardly at all. Sure it's there in place of real player, and I got
rid of real player because of the icon that appeared in the system tray that
I had to disable every time I started the machine. As well as it was always
trying to update itself. I have winamp set as my default player and media
player classic only comes up real occasionally on the web. Honestly I don't
know the answer to this one and I apologize. I looked in the program itself
and I can tell you how to mute but not how to access the volume control.
It's under the volume control pull down, I just can't access the hotkey with
window-eyes.

Real Alternative

2005-09-18 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Well, I've given up on Real Alternative. I couldn't find anyone to help me
troubleshoot why the audio output device selector didn't have any effect at
all; no matter what selection I made, it still played through my default

now, I'll just have to wait and see if Real Networks ever gets their act

real alternative?

2005-09-17 Thread Betsy Sawyers
Hi,

I am trying to listen to a couple of radio stations with Real Alternative,
but when I click on the listen live link I get a save dialogue inwhich the
file to save has a .smil or a .ram extension . After clicking save I am
returned to the listen live link. Some real media stations play just fine
with the winamp Tara plugin, but these wouldn't so downloaded the real
alternative, but still no luck. Is there a certain way I should set up real
alternative or will these simply not work?
Thanks,

RE: moving forward in real alternative

2005-02-06 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
Real Alternative is a package that allows Real Content to play in
other players. It is not a player in itself, though it does include the
Windows Media Classic player. However I, and most other people, use Winamp.
If you're using Windows Media Classic, I don't know how to jump. If you're
using Winamp, hit ctrl+j to jump to a specific time in a file, then enter
that as mm:ss. That is, 60 minutes would be
60:00
You will be taken to 60 minutes from the beginning of the file.
If you're using Winamp with the Jaws scripts, you can do relative

Hi,
I am using real alternative.
When you go to the go to dialogue how do you type in the minutes in the
edit box.
let's say you want to move forward 60 minutes in the program you are
listening to what do you type.
Thanks.

that as mm:ss. That is, 60 minutes would be

If you're using Winamp with the Jaws scripts, you can do relative

2004-09-15 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,
I tried Real Alternative and liked it a lot. The problem that I had with it
was that I wanted to use it to listen to sports broadcasts from the
University of North Carolina. They now have a subscription service where
you have to pay so much per month. When I tried to use Real Alternative,
the system came back and said that my real player was out of date and I
would have to update to the new one to use this service. I was using the
most recent version of Real Alternative and finally had to install the Real
Player to make it work. I was disappointed as I really would have preferred
to use Real Alternative.

 Hello Anders,

Yes, I have had this problem. One possible explanation is that the
station
can no longer be accessed by the ram file that has been saved in the
favorites, either because the station is no longer on the internet, or
because the station's internet address has changed. I had about ten
favorites, all of which disappeared during the last two months.

Could you please say what stations you are having a problem with, and I
will see if I have any better luck.
