Iriver HD recorders

2004-07-06 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Folks,
Nice to be back on the old list. Does anybody know if the iriver HD
recorders/players are accessible please? My Understanding is that through
the line-in, or the onboard mic the default file format is mp3. It would
be nice to record straight to .wav, but mp3 will suffice given that the
bit-rate can be set high enough to preserve as much of the original sound
as possible. anyway, this might all be academic if the devices are not
accessible by visually impaired folk.

many thanks.
Joe

Re: problem with EZCD DA extractor 7

2004-07-07 Thread Joe Paton
rob,
I have a feeling that the manic fin who writes the program, and constantly
updates it, has changed the list view, to a grid. Don't know if this is
your problem, but it's the reason I haven't upgraded from version 6/x

At 18:29 07/07/2004, you wrote:
Hi all, got a problem with the latest version of the above, which I
hope someone can help with.
When I try to copy a compilation Cd, the programme lists all the
tracks as separate directories, rather than all the tracks in one
albums directory. each directory is call Artist name/album title. So
you'd have say Robert Palmer addicted to love, survivor addicted to
love, meatloaf addicted to love, where the album is called addicted
to love and it's a compilation album, where 3 of the tracks on the
album are by Survivor, Robert Palmer and Meatloaf. I want the
directory to be called various Artists, the next level down to be
the albums title, and the bottom level to e the track name with the
artist. The problem is of course, where the album is by a particular
artist, I.E. a Mike Oldfield album, Mike Oldfield needs to be the top
directory name, with the album, say Tubular Bells, being listed as a
sub-directory off that, along with the other Mike Oldfield albums.
Hope that's reasonably clear, and if you can help, it would be very
much appreciated. I don't appear to have had the problem with earlier
versions of EZCD.
Thanks,
Rob

Re: Goldwave jumping (I think)

2004-09-08 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Morey,
I think what you may have achieved is to have removed what goldwave thinks
as clicks and cracks from the whole sound file. What you need to do is
select the areas where there are crackles and apply the effect to those
specific areas.

HTH good luck.

seperate tracks. This was accomplished with no problem.
I then tried playing one of the tracks and all of them kind of had a very
fast echo in every word or note played.
It is so fast that it sounds like everything is breaking up very fast.
The only thing I checked in the effects menu, was to remove any cracks and

Any suggestions on where I went wrong?

the control panel is not real accessible. They have a few presets for echo

the new Creative external cards that plug in to your USB 2.0 ports. These
cards are the cleanest I've ever heard with no distortion and you can move
the card from machine to machine. There still a little pricey but well
worth the money.

Re: a somewhat techie question about the LAME encoder and Total Recorder

2005-03-30 Thread Joe Paton
Hi Larry,
Did you get the full lame release? I mean did you get the razorlame which
I would call a front end for the lame encoder? Here you can make a number
of adjustments to the encoder. However, I am not sure if those adjustments
will be passed to gold wave when you use the encoder. This is probably a
dumb question, but if you record to .wav format, do you get the image shift?

Not sure this waffle helps, but it might help a little. Just a lame excuse
don't you know.

Best,
Joe

Hi listers,
Hopefully there is a solution to this rather annoying problem when
recording with the LAME encoder. When playing back a program I recorded
from XM Radio last night, I noticed a problem that occurs with some MP3s
where instruments or vocals will shift from either the left or right
channels almost to the middle channel, so to speak, when there is silence
in the opposite channel from the solo instrument or vocal. This happens
also in other combinations, but the point is, that it shouldn't. This
effect is most noticeable when listening through headphones.

I can't seem to find any way to work on more advanced LAME settings within
Total Recorder like one can using CDEX. Does any one have any ideas as to
how to best go about tinkering with this thing, so hopefully I can stop
this behavior?

Thanks very much in advance,

Paul,
I guess that a 64-bit processor may well improve overall performance. It
will certainly cost you much more, so looking at the return on investment
and the actual performance improvements would be worth further
investigation. However I suspect that faster multiple Hard disks, Low
latency sound cards, as much RAM as you can install will far outway the 64
bit processor. I guess that to fully benefit from a 64 bit Main board and
processor, you will require 64-bit applications.

What about the apple and tiger running pro tools?

Re: Separate audio mixer advice?

Hi Jim,

I guess you are going to plug the mixer in to the sound card, and audio
devices in to the mixer. Good system. What you may like to look for, is a
mixer which has channel switching off and on. So you can say, turn off the
audio source with the push of a button, leaving the mic channel open. Then
re-enstate the audio with the push of a button. This would save you
re-setting the faders each time.

Just a thought.

windows media which version

2009-12-29 Thread Joe Paton

Hi folks,

I'm an old boy returning to this great list.

My question is, which version of Windows media player, either 10 or
11 is best with either JFW9 and window-eyes 7.11?

I seem to recall that there may have been accessibility issues with
wmp 11. Is this correct?

Also, does anybody have the whereabouts of a tutorial on this dratted player?

Thanks a bunch.

RE: Total Recorder various versions

2010-01-05 Thread Joe Paton

David,

I aggree, unless you want to do what total recorder calls background
recording. I don't think GW does that. The TR scheduler may do more
remote recording than GW but that's for others to enlarge
upon. You'd really need to do a side by side comparison, features
and accessibility et cetera. It's true that GW have taken
accessibility as a priority and there's good JFW and wineyes support
for it.. Doesn't mean that TR isn't as accessible out of the box, I
don't know but I doubt it.

Re: sound card

2010-01-06 Thread Joe Paton
Les, the M-audio cards are good, sound great, but if you are using a
screen reader, the latter versions of their interfaces are a bit
tricky to navigate. The M-audio doesn't utilize the windows mixer,
so you need their control pannel to adjust the card controls. It can
be done with window-eyes, but it takes a little perseverance, and
constant use of the mouse pad.

Good luck.

Hi All,

Well, I'm considering one of the Olympis digital recorders, the
question is, which one.

I think there was a series of them ending in 30, 40 and 50. I've
seen

the 30 and the 50. However, I think there are several newer ones
since then and what I need to know is how do they differ in size,
features and cost?

There are other brands also, but there are just to many to keep up
with.
Perhaps I should tell you what I want to do with it maybe that would
help you guide me in the right direction.

I'm a storm nut and I want to record thunder without it being
distorted.
I
want something small that I can just grab and go when I need it. I
may use it for general notes and things, too, but capturing thunder
and transferring it to the computer is my main objective.

Any advice and recommendations will be appreciated.

Kris

Re: Wind noise question

2010-11-08 Thread Joe Paton

Dave,

You could try removing certain frequencies, but
the trouble is that the wind noise covers quite a wide frequency band range.
Then of course, the sound of your voice will
inevitably change as you reduce frequencies.

It's a learning curve, and the olympus range are
not tollerant of wind noise, even human breath on
the nics. A wind shield could save this in future.

There are many of these weird things I use the induction loop coils in a
 hearing aid for.

I can hear the hard disk of my iriver hard drive booting up for example.
And my cell phone to know if it's starting up or not.

If a normal hearing person can get hold of a small amplifier with an
induction loop built in, you will be able to check all kinds of
 interesting things.

 Hi!

Now this tip isn't going to be for everyone as not everyone wears hearing
instruments which can be used with induction loops but if you do? Well
here's a handy way to use your instruments to great effect when sorting
 out
one of the very few functions of the Zoom H1 which isn't accessible.

I'm talking about the Bit and Sample rate of the file you're recording,
 this
is changed in Standby mode by using the fast forward and rewind
 buttons,
rewind takes you back through the cycle whilst fast forward takes you
forward through the cycle of bit and sample rates.

When recording using Wave Broadcast format you cycle through 44.1KHZ 16
 Bit,
48KHZ 24 bit and so on right the way up to 96KHZ 24 and back to 44.1KHZ
 16
bit so how to tell where you are.

Well turn your instruments to pick up induction loops and put the
 recorder
near them. Now start recording, you'll be able to hear the recorder as
 it
writes to the SD card and the slower the rate of writing then the small
 the
sample size, 44.1KHZ 16 bit has the Zoom H1 writing to the SD card about
every half second whilst 96KHZ 24 bit has the H1 writing to the SD card
every sixth of a second or so.

Just thought others may find this helpful as I do, still haven't worked
 out
a way to set the date and time for date/time stamping of recordings but I
have to admit to not trying too hard, after all! one can change all that
when the files are copied from the H1 to your computer.

Once you experience the ease and simplicity of Studio recorder, you

RE: Accessable Hard Drive for Hi Fi

2011-01-09 Thread Joe Paton
You may have a problem if the external drive goes into standbye mode
as some of them do. The spin-up process, then the reading process
may as has been mentioned, rely for smoothe audio results depend on
some player buffering.

You can probably set a reasonable size cache on the external drive as well.

Others on this list will know better than I do about such things however.

Good luck.

I was thinking it would be slow whenever you were copying files over to
or from the USB drive over that 1.1 USB connection. I'm not sure if the
access rate over a 1.1 USB connection would be so slow as to effect your
ability to play audio off a drive attached to such a port. It would
probably work, but your player may have to do a tiny bit of buffering.

There's a few things you can do to see if you have more hard drive space
out there. When you go into My computer, do you see any other drives
listed besides the C drive? If so, they may be other partitions on your
hard drive.

You can also use Windows Disk Management to see how your hard drive is
partitioned. Go to your desktop, arrow over to My Computer, and hit the
shift+f10, right mouse button or applications key to bring up the
context menu. Arrow down to Manage and hit enter. Now you can arrow down
to Storage, Disk Management and then tab over to check out how your
drive is partitioned.

You will free up space by deleting programs you aren't using, but
depending on the programs, it probably won't be very much. How much
data are you talking about transferring? Are any other partitions
besides C listed? there may be a recovery partition that you could
steal, if you don't care about ever recovering the machine or if you
already have recovery CD's burned. BTW, what OS is running on this
 machine?

When you ask about additional memory, are you talking about RAM or
hard drive space? How much RAM is there now? Prices on memory and hard
drives only come down, so finding hardware for older systems can end
up costing you enough to make it worth buying a real cheap low end
system. Since it's a laptop, you'd have to replace the drive that's
there, which would mean a lot of work reinstalling Windows onto the
new hard drive, assuming you have a license and the install media for
Windows. Depending on how much RAM you have and how much the laptop
will support, you may be able to add more, but this probably won't buy
you anything when it comes to storing media files on the hard drive.
Something like Crucial.com at http://www.crucial.com/ can take you
 through the RAM upgrade process.

You could use an external drive, but I think you'd find the speed
 frustrating.

Re: Amazing Slowdown

2011-06-25 Thread Joe Paton
Yes chris, it's a good programme. If you select the correct slow
down type, there are three, The granularity of the audio is minimal.

I've used this software for about 2 years now.

There are also competitors, check out seventh string software, or
seventh string solutions can't remember which it is now, but there
programme does the same tasks, but there is a pictorial display at
the bottom of the screen giving a view of a musical stave with an
approximation of the chords or notes being played. Obviously not an
awful lot of use if speech output is the only interface, but if you
have useful vission, or use screen mag,, it might be a contender.

Roni software, in the form of amazing slowdowner does in my
experience offer the best audio quality when the source is either
slowed or speeded up.

Another feature, is the ability to set regions, or pre-sets and
assign the regions to keys on the number row. Pre-sets are set with
control and a1 through 9, and retrieved by pressing the number key on its own.
So you can jump between trickey parts of a piece of music that you
are working on. These marked areas also hold the parameters that you
have set in terms of the playback speed, pitch as well.

There's a host of keyboard commands to control the program found
under the options, preferences menu. You can perform the same audio
functions with MIDI, I haven't done this being a guitarist not a
keyboard player. Not even a guitar player really, more of a bass player.

good luck.

Re: Totle Recorder verses GoldWave?

2011-07-04 Thread Joe Paton

Carlos,

Ok. Think about what you want to do. Obviously you want to record,
using the PC. You'll want the most input resources available to
you. Line-in, stereo mix, .wav and whatever else your sound card supports.

Capturing the audio, in which ever form, can be done by most
recording software, that is not the end of the matter.

You might need or want, or have to edit some recordings. For most
processes, goldwave has full keyboard support, and integrates with
most major screen readers to a greater or lesser extent; I.E there
may be scripts or setfiles to improve access, but these are not
necessary when you understand the audio software you are running and
have a good working knowledge of the screen reader in use.

If itr's straight recording, with little edditing, then mp3 direct
cut will facilitate the recording of audio with .mp3 files as the
output file format. This is free, but cutting, copying, pasting,
equalizing only the volume fading in/out is just about it with mp3
direct cut. but it's fairly straight forward, and will capture and save audio.

Goldwave, Sound forge, record all and total recorder are but a few
audio editing packages which give reasonable access .

The goldwave dev. team are always responsive to the needs of screen
reader/magnifier users, and will take on board, then modify or repair
elements if they are broken, or just not accessible; That is worth
paying fifty or sixty canadian dollars for in my opinion.

Sony's sound forge, although you didn't mention this, is extremely
powerful, and is the highest price tag.

In earlier versions, care needed to be taken with the total recorder
drivers, because they conflicted or isolated other required sound
drivers. This was not difficult to fix, but caught a few of us on
the hop when things that used to work no longer worked. This issue
may have been resolved for further stable releases of the software,
other list contributors can confirm or not this situation.

If however you want to multi track record, then probably up for
consideration must be the Reaper multi track recorder; This is where
there are say a drum track, then a bass track, keyboard track, main
vocal track and say 3 harmony vocals. So you can then play and edit
each of these 7 audio source tracks till you have what you want, then
mix them together, and save the project down to an audio file format.

Reaper is not free, but I think the rae pluggin for better access is.

This is also a considerable learning curve, so be prepared to listen
to pod casts, and read the manual.

Going back to goldwave, the manual is brilliant. In .html format,
navigation and searching and locating results is a breeze when you
understand your web browser and how to use the screen reader for
navigating .html documents.

Audacity is free I think, I don't have much experience of this though.
sorry this is a little sketchey.

Just some thoughts for you, and good luck.

I don't know Roxio since about version 6. As I recal,
 back then, when
you select the rip function, you have several controls
 that you can
tab through before starting the rip.
One of those controls was for the format and quality,
 i.e.
.wma at various bit rates, .wav, or .mp3 at various bit
 rates.See if
you can find such a control. Also check in the menus
for
 option
settings and see if there is such a menu.

To check and see what bit rate the track was ripped at,
 highlight the
ripped track, right click on it and up arrow once to
 Properties.
Control tab to the Summary tab and tab or arrow down
 through the
various options until you find the bit rate. In the
 Summary tab
you'll wat to make sure that the Advanced option is
 checked/activated.

If you can describe the process you go through as you
rip
 a disk, it
might help us to figure out where in the process
 selection
 of the rip
 format and quality is located.

 Good luck.

RE: Further to my cd creator problem

2012-01-19 Thread Joe Paton
Adrian,

as tom ses, it sounds like the bit rate, and maybe even the type of encoding
needs to be checked.

I haven't used easy cd extractor since version 11. but in the output tab you
determine what encoding you want, flak, mp3 ogg wma or whatever. Then you
determine the bit rate along with lots of other peramaters.

You may have an accessibility issue hear, as I say, i have no experience since
the earlier version, but once set up, it should be a breeze to use.

I hope you get an answer either from the forum or the good folks on this list
who no much more than me.
good luck,

Joe

Hey Tim,

I really don't have a problem editing audio. After all, that's what it is, so
I can happily select passages, fine tune the selection, mix, paste, copy and
other manipulating functions without problems.

Maybe if I used the scripts i'd find it easier, but it works just fine right
now.

It would be nice, but not essential to hear the record, play, pause, stop fast
forward et cetera spoken as they used to be, but it isn't impeeding me at all.
I haven't undertaken any batch processing with this latest release, so we'll
see how it goes when the time comes around.

Thanks,

Hi list,

By chance, does anybody have version 3.7 or there abouts of
reaper? It certainly is not available from the web site as far as I

My understanding is that this works considerably better with the REA
screen reader plug in which rumour has it, is not being further
developed to work with version 4.x. Rather the developer appears to
have disappeared if that makes sense. Maybe another enthusiast will
pick it up, got to be some dollars in it.

After a few years Jonathan no longer wanted to be moderator
so he turned it over to Jeff Harris. I'm pretty sure that
Jeff is the one who obtained the domain name and took care of
the web hosting site, at ultrahost.us. After another few
years Jeff no longer wanted the list so Jonathan again became
the list owner and moderator.

Again, my memory is a bit fuzzy on the time interval, but it
was perhaps five or six years ago when Jonathan asked for
volunteers to take ownership and moderating the list and, I'm
not sure why, but he chose me from those who responded. I
did not write the guidelines for what is appropriate to be
posted to the list. It was either Jonathan or Jeff.

It's a difficult decision to make as to what is appropriate
for the list and what is not. When the guidelines were
written, there weren't devices such as iPods, iPhones,
Humanware or Victor Streams. Discussing cell phones has been
off topic on this list for a long time. Jonathan even has,
or had, a list for these discussions.

Since the traffic on the list is still rather small, I think
we'll just see how subjects and issues play out. Any
comments regarding the content of the list will be appreciated.

I do pay a fee every year for the domain name and web hosting

streaming issues in windows7

Good evening folks

The problem here is that when I want to play an audio stream from the
net, any player chosen is stopped. Playing files located on the
machine is fine, but either entering a stream address in to say
winamp, winamp comes back with The address and the message access
denied winamp stopped.

Same with windows media player. Obviously it doesn't give the error
winamp stopped.

equally files will not play if they are called from the email client,
or internet explorer, this used to work during better days when XP ruled.

I've temporarily disabled firewall and UAC, but to no avail.

Anybody had this problem and wants to share how they got round it?
or, never had the problem and wants to share how they would get round
it if they did have it?

RE: Spotify Accessibility

2012-06-04 Thread Joe Paton

Hi,

I've had an account for a couple years, the spotify runtime
periodically updates itself, and with Window-eyes I can do what I want.

Insert searches, add to playlists, create new playlists and so on.

You can see that my requirements are but basic, anything more
complicated and there may be trouble ahead. But it does what I need.

Re: Still Looking For Help With Winamp

2012-07-05 Thread Joe Paton

Hi Tom,

I am not fully convercent with all the symptoms of your problem.

However, the screen reader's volume should be independent of the winamp volume.
I think the screen reader actually directly adjusts the audio device,
where the winamp volume adjusts actual output from winamp.

I could be wrong, I often am.

you need to start from somewhere as they say, so remove winamp.

Then go to the program files directory, and remove the winamp
directory if it is still their.

to be completely thorough, you could also remove the directory in
documents and settings, users user applicationdata there's a winamp
sub directory their which holds user settings, and I doubt if the
audio side is controled from here anyway but be completely sure,
remove this directory as well.

re-install winamp, remembering to accepth the clasic theme on the
visualisations side of things.

If you haven't got an recent winamp let me know and I'll send you a link.

If after re-install, then the problem shouldn't be winamp, but a
shared component.
So then you might want to re-install your sound card drivers, not
always easy, but can be done.

I suggested that you try another player to try and narrow down the
sources of your problem. Not conclusive, but a pointer.

Good luck.

Hello Ray,

I've wrestled with this one.

By using the jaws cursor, and setting the restriction to Frame, it's
then possible to access the bit-rate, and output file type boxes,
click in these boxes and you can change the values.

It's a pig though.

I had better luck with window eyes, but that's about as much help to

Good luck.

Hello Ray,

I've wrestled with this one.

By using the jaws cursor, and setting the restriction to Frame, it's
then possible to access the bit-rate, and output file type boxes,
click in these boxes and you can change the values.

It's a pig though.

I had better luck with window eyes, but that's about as much help to
you as flying to the moon in a bolsa wood glider.

Good luck.

Joe

Suggest you try the Any DVD/Clone DVD combination.

Clone DVD is the copying software while Any DVD makes sure you can

The Clone DVD interface presents a series of pages where you tab
from control to control. Some use of the review cursor (mouse
cursor) is needed but it is usually obvious what has to be clicked on.

Clone DVD now allows you to copy blue ray DVDs or step blue ray down
to normal DVD.

It also allows you to copy one or all the titles on a disk.

There is a small charge for the software but it is well worth it.

Have a look at the page:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd.html

Any DVD and Clone DVD have been around for about 10 years which is
more than can be said for a lot of other programs.

Using reaper be sure to use the rae pluggins.

Whether audacity or reaper is the better, I wouldn't comment.
either program has strong screen reader support.

Hank,

There is a keytstroke needed so that the data you want to play after
recording is available. Dan't recall what it is just now, but it works fine.

Maybe REA access is no un der developement, but as at the last
release of reaper i believe that it worked pretty good.
One of the facilities I like in reaper is that, I can record track 1,
say first vocals, guitar, or bass, then monitor that track while
recording next instrumental parts or further dodgy harmonies.

If this can be done in audacity then that might suit me just as
well. But for MIDI and audio then Sonar (costs a few dollars
though) reaper may be best value.
Somebody who has used audacity with extensive midi control could
better advise you.

Hank,

When you've finished recording a track in reaper, the highlight is at
the end. So you press either, control-home, or home on its
own. Then the file will play from the start.

Just off out, so hope this helps.

Sharon,

Your original problem was, that you had to manually fix the saving

I sent you the procedure for making the default save option for file

That wwas what you wanted, or have I missed something.

Just revert the save options for stereo when you want to do a run of

I don't see a goldwave glitch at all, seems to work in this area

Hi,

The nice thing about these drivers, is that they support Stereo mix and the
recording of streaming audio.

Re: gw connect question

2013-01-08 Thread Joe Paton

Hello,
many solutions for this.
Probblem might be that, if you are not using an external synthesiser,
and using a screen reader, that would be recorded as well as your
two-way conversation.

Just a thought.

Re: re sound taxi

2013-02-01 Thread Joe Paton

Hi brian,

I have it here, but I haven't used it for a while.
Running window-eyes 8.0, and I used to run sound taxi with 6.0 and later.

Don't know what the links on the site do, sounds like documentation
would be the .pdf, as for the mp3 I don't know about that.

What file types do you want to convert?

Joe

mp3. does this mean, one has to get different versions depending
what one wants to do with it. any help would be appreciated. brian.

Re: lowering bit rate in some mp3 files

2013-03-07 Thread Joe Paton

Adrian,

Lowering the bit-rate wil not improve the situation. There may be a
number of reasons why you are hearing distortion, and changint the
bit-rate will not fix this.

When you say distortion, do you mean over mudulation, or are you
hearing artifacts in the audio?

Hello Ray and adrien,
Good point ray. Adrien, what is the origin of the source files?

I asume that when you turn the levels up on other files they are all
clean as whistles?

Thanks.
Joe

Was it as cd you ripped, or a downloaded audio?

Hi Joe

When I listen to them, I hear a lot of distortion or
crackling when I have the audio up full. It is difficult to
get it at a comfortable level

are converted?

2013-03-07 Thread Joe Paton

Hello Adrien,

I've heard it tonight.
Dreadful audio though, but a good guitar solo, reckon he liked the
original. Brian may would have been pleased to hear his work so
expertly executed.
Drums are high in the mix as well, huge conpression all over the
place, I'd look for a better version if I liked the track.

Reckon the quality is the answer to your distortion.
particularly if other music is clean and good sounding.

Thanks.

Joe

Re: Mac Versus Windows

2013-03-15 Thread Joe Paton

Hello Vicki,
As you say, Itunes on both systems shouldn't present a problem.
Pages is a word processor for the mac, and will read, and save
documents back in to word format.
You would use numbers, as a spreadsheet package if you want, it's
fairly accessible I believe, although completely different from excel
for example.

VLC media player works on both systems.

We haven't really scratched the surface, but good luck in the new enterprise.
