This canal is part of the Upper Waitaki power scheme, which links
about four lakes along the Waitaki River in the central South
Island. This one runs between Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, the first
and second lakes in the system. The scheme is one of the largest
engineering projects ever undertaken in this country. A recent
attempt to expand it was canned due to a number of issues (some
 political, some technical, some geological).

The power company owns the road that runs next to this canal, and
allows public access. It's a longer drive than the publically-owned
road, but is more scenic. Further along the canal there is the Mount
Cook Salmon Farm, which is apparently the worlds highest. If your
wallet is weighing you down, you can take a scenic helicopter tour
 from there.

Re: Neat Image or Noise Ninja

2006-06-18 Thread Don Williams
I've just tried Ninja and compared the result to that from Neat.

The noise I have to deal with comes from different sources. The
microscope illumination system, three different cameras (two digital and
one film) plus the very strange noise introduced by JAlbum if you make a
gallery with any sharpened pictures -- this is not so important I
suppose. For unknown reasons JAlbum introduces terrible 'film grainy'
looking noise if any of the pictures included have been sharpened (I use
a little unsharp masking sometimes). Neat image cleans this up
immediately after auto profiling and a little additional tweaking. I
tried the same thing with Ninja and got bad results the first two times,
but I'll have another go and see what happens. In this case a profile
for the *ist D wouldn't help much, but I've downloaded one anyway and
will see what happens with that.

You can make your own easy enough according to the literature. Or you

It rather reminds me of the 1960's The Prisoner TV series

beach scenes at Port Portmerion. There is one time or more
 where the taxis
(mini mokes) are on the beach.

That's what comes to mind for me.

Yes, I can see what you mean.

Perhaps I just think it's a cliché because it's so obviously within a
certain tradition of British seaside photography. In the essay
included in Mark Powers' The Shipping Forecast, David Chandler talks
about the tradition of social documentary photography in Britain and
for photographers the shoreline, the beach and the seaside town have
all traditionally harboured the pageant of British post-war life. He
traces this tradition from photographers like James Jarche and Bert
Hardy, through Tony Ray-Jones, Martin Parr, Anna Fox and Mark Power. I
would also include in that list people like Ian Berry, David Hurn and
to some extent Don McCullen, and perhaps even Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.

The same influence is also evident in other media, such as 'The
Prisoner'.

Re: PESO: Gold in my backyard

2006-06-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
No, the A2X-S, like the A2X-L has only the A contacts. Mine has a
damaged lock pin. The spring has evidently become unattached, so it
won't lock on the lens. It still works fine as long as I make sure the
lens is all the way engaged. But I almost dropped my A400 yesterday,
when it spun off the converter. Luckily, I caught it with my other hand
about halfway to the floor. Close call. I think I'll take the converter
to my local repair guy and see if he can fix it. They used to be quite
expensive. It has seven elements, so it's a rather sophisticated optic.

converter, the working stop is f11 wide open on my A 400 5.6.

Hi,

Great idea for a photo nice scene, nice subject, nice framing.

This is a situation that almost requires a dozen or more frames to be
exposed. Subtle differences in the movement of the kids, your arm, tilt of
a head, may alter the effect of such a photo, some positions making it
stronger or weaker.

Working in a little closer may have helped some, but that depends on just
what the story is you wanted to tell with the photo.

Here's a FAQ for this list:

POSTING PHOTOS-- For PESO/PAW/ETC, you put it up on the web somewhere
and post a URL in your message. You can not post photos directly to the
list, the list management software will automatically delete your post.

PESO (GESO,PAW,etc.)-- Photo Every So Oftten (also PAW-- Photo A Week),
a thing introduced to the list a while back by Shel Belinkoff where you
can put up a photo you want commented on and folks will tell you how you
should have done it (grin). PESO seems to have become the preferred
acronym. You will also occassionally see GESO (Gallery Every So Often) I
personally do not like the idea, if you want to show a bunch of your
photos just post a link to your webpage in your sig line.

People post links to galleries quite frequently.

Can someone please serve me some pie?

Reading through the couple of recent threads on pixels and jpegs vs RAW
spurred me on to do another test (I hate tests because it means work).

When I got a DSLR a few years ago I did a test where I shot some books
on a shelf in both RAW and large fine jpeg and compared the results on
the monitor, blown right up in Photoshop. This was with a Canon D60.
The
detail was more or less the same in both pics, and so I kept with jpeg
as it was all a bit of a learning curve at the time and I'm for the
path
of least resistance when I can get away with it.

I sold the D60 and got a 1Dmark II (1.3 crop from full frame) and have
been happy with it. Of course, I didn't do any tests as I assumed the
results would be the same. But, of course, they're not.

Hence, I was fiddling (fondling?) my beloved Pentax SMC-A* 85mm f/1.4
(to confirm I'm on topic here) and there was a very contrasty subject
right in front of me: buckets of paint and bits of wood, backlit,
darkest shadows right through to bright highlights bouncing off the
lids.

I shot one jpeg frame and one RAW.

Into Photoshop CS with both, the RAW staying in 16 bit. Here's a couple
of screen shots:

http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/spare5.html

Guess which one is the RAW file :-)

ISO 800, 1/30th sec handheld (c'mon I don't do tripod tests - there has
to be an element of risk ;-)

The jpeg is as good as I could get it. The white lids with hot sun on
them were solid gone, but the shadow detail was full retrievable with
the RAW. With the jpeg it took a lot of bodging and it stinks. But the
level of detail in the RAW amazed me. That instantly sold me back onto
RAW.

Of course, there's no way my inkjet can cope with showing that detail,
but that's another story.

Some facts: jpeg file on card 5MB, RAW is 8 MB. I'm down from 300-odd
jpegs per 2 GB card to 187 at 200 ISO. Time for some more cards :-(

And time to pull Bruce's book off the shelf and have another go.

Some pass me a desert fork

K100D SR

2006-06-18 Thread Takeshita K
Hi all,

I just encountered a very brief review of the effectiveness of the
K100D (Beta) SR.
Reviewer is a well known camera writer who always has a privilege for
sneak previews.

He is reviewing a K100D + DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited, but no review of
the lens, only on the SR.
He talks about the difference between the RS used for A10 (using
micro-stepping motors) and the magnetic floating used for K100D which
most PDMLers know by now.

According to him (who interviewed Pentax engineers), Pentax have been
developing this system over so many years, way before Minolta
announced the CCD shift method, and even during the film camera era.
His point is that the effectiveness of Pentax's SR is more than 2
stops which Pentax so far disclosed. But he found that this was an
overly conservative estimate. He experimented it using various
lenses and was convinced that it really has more than 3 stops
effectiveness.
He went on to say, as most of us here know again, that he has to
wonder why Pentax have always been very timid (his word) in showing
this sort of specs. He said he was so frustrated that Pentax do'nt
usually brag about their accomplishments.

Well, sounds like the Pentax's SR is indeed very effective.

Just FYI.

Ken, do you mean than even when Pentax produced only film cameras, they
were nonetheless working on shake reduction for an eventual digital sensor?

Hi Joe,

That's what this reviewer is saying.
Pal was saying that Pentax had a basic patent for the IS and it is
very conceivable that they had developed all sorts of designs for the
SR over the years. I am sure that they were always trying to market
some form of SR but film plane cannot be shifted so the CCD shift
method must be a new concept. Whether they have been developing this
particular method even during the film era, I do not know, but that's
certainly what the reviewer says ;-). And it is very conceivable as
Pentax, over the years, have developed many things but only few made
into the market. Timid marketing? Maybe.
But they appear to have transformed themselves into more of a risk
taker since switching to digital.

Cheers,

ken

Probably a lot different. I've found the 43 Limited to be exemplary

I prefer the first version, with the blown out windows, rather than having
any details in the windows. Better symbolism. Also the lighting in other areas
is more dramatic.

The one thing I am unsure about is the two kids at the bottom of the pic. I
didn't really notice them in the first version. But I do in the second and
their postures are eloquent. However, I like the strong light beam on the bench
next to the right most boy, another symbol. Maybe you could just bring up
details in the shadows a little in the lower area, without affecting the light
beam?
(You'll have to use a selection tool.)

In other words, I think your first instincts were fine.

Nice concept, but a tad too dead center for me. Not so much the bench, but
the bench AND the horizon line. Also what some have said about separating the

bench dead center, this might have been better taken either closer to the

But the lines in the ground are interesting, the concept is good, and your

Sorry to hear of this Marnie.

I know what you went through, as i didi with my Mom.

 Thinking of you today.

 Dave

I don't know if I mentioned it
before, but
 while in
 the hospital with
pneumonia, Mom started refusing to eat and drink. The strange thing was,
 she didn't
  do it all the time.

For reasons I won't go into, she was in isolation for a while. She came
 out
of isolation last Tuesday but at that time was refusing to eat and drink
consistently. So I brought her home to die on Wednesday. We did the
 hospice bit and
she died early on Sunday morning (what I think of as Saturday night).

Yes, I was getting tired of taking care of her. It was a lot work, and
 my
personal freedom was seriously limited, especially the last two years,
 with
almost no freedom this last year.

But I had also become quite fond of her. We had evolved a good
mother/daughter relationship over the years -- and I won't say who was
 the mother and
 who

  was the daughter.

So grief is battling with relief.

Yeah, I am sad. I will miss her.

She did, at least, live long enough to come home and die at home rather
 than
  in a scary, impersonal hospital.

I never took any more pictures of her hands after she came home to
 recover
from the colostomy (there was about a month between the colostomy and
 the later
pneumonia). However, weird that I am, I did take some pictures of her in
 the
hospital and at home, sick with pneumonia. I don't really know why I did
 that.

Thank you, everyone, for your positive thoughts. They may have helped.

PESO - Mustard Windmill

going through my pic directories and came across this. Shot over a year ago, in
Fremont when I was scooping out Mission San Jose for a possible Norcal PDML
outing (we went to San Jose instead).

Fremont id an interesting town. This little farm was right near a townhouse
development. There were little bits of farms and/or farms scattered through out
or near the downtown area. I wanted to get closer to shoot the windmill and
barns, but there was a fence and it was private property. So far fence hopping
is something I've avoided.

Oh, the ground was sloping; it was on a hillside.

Probably a bit trite, but I think it's pretty and may make a print of it.

Re: On subject of flare.

2006-06-18 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

It would have been interesting to see how the lens fared without the
 extra UV-filter.

Probably a lot different. I've found the 43 Limited to be exemplary
with regards to flare. Some have called it the best lens I ever
 encountered in some flare tests:
 http://luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-03-01-12.shtml

Mark, all my Pentax lenses with perhaps exception of 28-105 IF are
extremely resistant to flare. So far I caught flare only once on 43 Lim
(you just saw it) and just once on 77 Lim. I say, that it is absolutely
excellent.

I am not that perfectionist although I definitely am somewhat.

To re-iterate - my point, or attempt to make one, was that each lens
*can be forced* to flare, while it is *almost* impossible to do with
Pentax lenses.

Bill, I see what you and others are saying. As a matter of fact my
exercise in grand enablement with all three Limited lenses has been
serious investment for me. So I have to protect it somehow.

Another thought. I am tall, not as tall as you, but still I have my 6
feet ;-). The acceleration caused by mother earth attraction is known to
be 9.81 m/c^2. And I am known to let things be in gentle care of
mother's earth attraction. It is only logical to prefer to have to
replace the filter than go through the hoops replacing the front element.

As a side note... So far I couldn't find a reversing ring for 49 mm

I think any impact that damages a filter is still likely to cause
