on a par with the LX in terms of build quality and sheer respect.
Reliability-wise, no contest. I loved the LX but it needed attention to
keep it up and running. As for Godfrey's bug-bear, the design is first
rate and I find little to fault it. I really wish I could find a reason

If that's all the middle men did you'd be right. They do a hell of a
lot more than that. The view you express was discredited 150 years ago.

What else can they do? You have a producer and a retailer, who could be one
and the same if the circumstances are right. The only point to anyone else is
to move the product from the producer to the retailer. The majority of
hand-picked produce is for direct consumption, without processing. Food for
processing is generally picked by machine, as appearance is less important.

casual day laborers (mainly construction), is also illegals. No one else
will do the work. In my immediate area there are a lot of Tongans filling
  those

economy will have some illegals in California. The average stay for an
  illegal is
two years. They make their money and go home.(I saw the results of study
once, though admittedly a study was probably hard to do.) I used to live
  in an
area with a check cashing place that I used. That area also had a lot of
illegals -- they used the check cashing place to send money home each
  week. It also
had a phone where they could call home if they paid enough.

Besides we have to compete with places like Mexico that grow crops where
  the
pickers are paid squat. (Not to mention that small CA farmers, as in not
agribusiness, operate on small margins). And other foreign countries were

If decent wages had to be paid for all crop picking, decent enough for no
illegals being hired, most of CA's remaining agricultural would crash
  (despite
agribusiness and some crops that don't have to be picked by hand. There
  are
many hand picked crops here.). In fact, several small economies in CA
  would
  crash.

I saw some figures recently that suggested that the labour cost involved
in crop picking was somewhat less than 1/10th of the retail price at the
most. You could double the wages and the retail price would only go up
marginally. Most cost is added by the middlemen who do nothing but move
  the stuff around.

Now its my daughters, dressage coaches, son's first birthday, and they
asked me to shoot same.

I want to do the same set up, as the pictures turnmed out very well,
but i forget what i didi with the 280 and PZ-1, as far as settings.

I'm pretty sure it was on TTL and the camera set at manual probably
1/30 or 1/60 at f 4ish.

Does that sound right.??

Also i may try out the sigma 500 dg super as well. That should give me
TTL for the PZ-1 i think. I cannot seem to locate my manual.

Camera on manual exposure.
Set the lens to an appropriate aperture for the DOF you want/need.
Set the shutter speed for correct exposure or minimum hand-holdable
speed (whichever is faster)
Set flash on TTL or P-TTL auto

Keep an eye on changing ambient lighting conditions and re-adjust steps

Re: BW or color?

2007-03-13 Thread Paul Stenquist
Yep, my monitor calibration was off. I hadn't run it in about six
months, and the luminance level was down quite a bit. I do have to run
gamma 2.2, so that makes a difference as well. (Gamma 2.2 is pretty
much mandatory when dealing with stock houses, retouchers and other
visual arts professionals.) But this was a wakeup call. I thought I
could get away with six month calibrations. Not true.

In regard to your rendering, it looks quite good now. The midrange
contrast is a big improvement. When I first viewed it there was no
detail to speak of in the blacks, which are converted from dark blue,
by the way. I'm going to go back and rework the original RAW and do a
new conversion. A correct monitor should help a lot.

Thanks for taking the time on this.

On Mar 12, 2007, at 5:36 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote:
Thanks for the feedback. I'm beginning to suspect that the contrast on

 ...

Certainly possible. Let's see if we can know for sure:

My monitor is calibrated with the Eye One Display 2 unit and iMatch
3.2 for 140 luminance, 1.8 gamma, and 5500K white point. An
simplistic way to check whether your calibration is netting the same
on-screen dynamic range as mine is to look at the grayscale step-
 wedge on my calibration page:

http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/calibration/cal.html

If your monitor is adjusted to the same overall DR as mine, you
should be able to see each step in the wedge as distince from the one
next to it. At the left edge, the white wedge should disappear into
the surrounding white area, and at the right edge the black wedge
should be indistinguishable from the black bar above it. Each step in
the wedge should be an even amount darker/lighter than the ones next
to it. (You can check this with the Digital Color Meter application
supplied in the /Applications/Utilities folder.) If that all matches,
we're looking at the same thing with regards to contrast.

... But what do you mean by
depth. More contrast makes the blacks block up here and wipes out
 the
skin tones. Depth is a vague notion as relates to a two-dimensional
 photograph.

When I see depth in a photo, BW or color, it is an illusion
created by the expression of a full tonal scale as well as the
interaction of focused zone and unfocused elements in the scene. A
photo which has no full black or white and poor separation of tones
in the grays tends to look flat and without depth, a photo which
expresses the full tonal scale and retains good tonal separation in
all the tones looks three-dimensional. It's something I strive for in
 my renderings.

I've taken a copy of your runner photo and applied a curves
adjustment edit to it, along with a spot correction on the black suit
to hold back areas where the detail should remain. It's difficult as
I am working with the 8bit JPEG file and there isn't a lot of detail
in the black areas to start with, they are somewhat underexposed.
This composite should show the difference ... I've included the
histograms of the original and the adjusted image:

http://homepage.mac.com/godders/PS-BW-runner-adjustment.jpg

You can see that the adjustment is quite subtle. If I had the
original RAW file to work with, there might be more that could be
done to express the Zone II-V tones better.

The adjusted image, on the right, shows much more depth, to my eye,
and would be preferable to the color rendering in this instance.

Hmm. Which bug-bear was that?

What I didn't like about the Canon gear I had wasn't much connected
with the design and quality. It was almost entirely the size/weight

Glad to help.

I have a timer set to remind me to run the monitor calibration every
month on my desktop system. I find the differences month-to-month
pretty small, at least with the Cinema Display 23, but comparing the
profiles over a six month time there is enough drift to be noticeable.

Regards monitor gamma, I have calibration and profiles set up for
both gamma 1.8 and gamma 2.2. Calibrated and profiled correctly, the
on-screen appearance of image files seems almost identical in color
managed applications, but I stick with the L=140, gamm=1.8, WP=5500K
configuration because it seems to give me the closest match between
screen and print output. I've not yet gotten involved in stock photo
sales, although I probably should get some going.

In terms of a machine middle men are the lubrication that makes the
system work. Like oil or graphite in a machine. Societies without them
soon create them. By the way the retailer, if not the producer, is a

If that's all the middle men did you'd be right. They do a hell of a
lot more than that. The view you express was discredited 150 years ago.

What else can they do? You have a producer and a retailer, who could be one
and the same if the circumstances are right. The only point to anyone else
is to move the product from the producer to the retailer. The majority of
hand-picked produce is for direct consumption, without processing. Food for
processing is generally picked by machine, as appearance is less important.

Citizens, on the whole, won't pick crops.

In California, the biggest pool of housecleaners, caregivers, gardeners,
 and
casual day laborers (mainly construction), is also illegals. No one else
will do the work. In my immediate area there are a lot of Tongans filling
 those
posts. Not all CA illegals are Latino. Any country that has a depressed
economy will have some illegals in California.

And other foreign countries were
 the
pay is terrible. Competing with third world countries is just a fact of
 life
 now.

What is and what should be are two different things.

To this I would have to say Nonsense. Since this discussion centers, at
least somewhat, around food, let's use that as an example. In many parts
of the US, and certainly in my area, there are many Farmer's Markets, where
produce and other food and craft items are sold directly to the consumer by
those who produce the goods. Not only does the system work well, but it's
growing to encompass many more markets in many more communities throughout
the country.

These open air markets have been seen in Europe and other countries for
hundreds of years, and seem to have worked quite well for many people, both
producer and consumer alike.

The middleman not needed in all situations, although in some scenarios
the middleman can be valuable in getting goods moved from the source to the
consumer. It just depends on the products and the situation. Nonetheless,
for many products and in many situations the middleman is just another
source for increasing the price of a commodity and slowing down the
transfer of the goods.

And yes, without middlemen there would only be producers and consumers.
You say that as though it were a bad thing. Is there something wrong with
having only a producer and a consumer?

Re: Simplified PS workflow

2007-03-13 Thread P. J. Alling
Middlemen often make prices lower. I live in New England. The history
here is simple. It cost less and was easier to grow grain in
Pennsylvania and Ohio. Most farmers who wanted to grow grain went to
far away, (and it was far away), Pennsylvania and Ohio, to grow grain.
That was the cause of one of the first great exoduses of people from New
England. Those who chose to stay and compete couldn't, they were
undersold by middlemen who bought grain in Pennsylvania and sold it
here. The same was true of local crafts. Uniform good quality factory
produced iron work put local blacksmiths our of the tool making business
and turned them into mechanics. We built factories which produced cloth
and tools to be sold by middlemen to the Farmers in far off lands, (like
Pennsylvania and Ohio). Farmers markets sell fresh food in season, (but
they won't sell you bread made with local grain),Your model falls down
when you examine it critically. Wal Mart survives because a widget made
in China and shipped here costs less to sell here than a Widget made
here, no matter how much better it is. There's no other reason. They
are the biggest damned middleman there is and they make prices lower.

In terms of a machine middle men are the lubrication that makes the
system work. Like oil or graphite in a machine. Societies without them
soon create them. By the way the retailer, if not the producer, is a
middleman. Without middlemen there would be only producers and consumers.

The Pentax A50mm 2.8 macro will be one of my favorite lenses on the K10D, I
used it a lot on film too.

made some amazing frozen flower shots early this morning

Larger macros subjects often present an abundance of angle and plane
choices in very tight quarters.
By 'larger', I mean a larger subject to lens ratio which I feel can
create a DOF dilemma. At least, for me.
This may be one that can be managed a bit better from slightly further

A, the Sigma is an older model I've never used. Also worth consideration is
the Tamron 90mm, very well regarded.

At least they are not the last this time :-) C1 still awaits for
update to include support for K10D and K100D ;-)

RE: Peso:White dog second bw version

2007-03-13 Thread Markus Maurer
A second and hopefully better version of the polar bear white dog in toned
bw can be seen at:

I like this one more than the color version...despite one of the legs being
to hot.

I went for a stroll in the incredible golden evening sun in the nearby
forest looking for some close-up photos with the K10D and the Pentax A50mm
macro
when I met this lovely dog. I hope that the owner will let me do some real
portraits of this wonderful big pal, I sent her the first photos per email
some
minutes ago. Sharpness lacks quite a bit here in this photo so I really hope
I can have a photo session with this lovely animal soon :-)

Interesting only for dog or polar bear lovers ;-)

Re: Macro Lenses

I need a macro lens. Don't want to spend the bucks for the latest Pentax AF,
for that matter I think I would prefer a MF version. KEH has some 100mm f/4
in different versions, one being an A model. They also have a Sigma 90mm
 f/2.8 A .
Anyone know anything about these or others that I need to consider?

What kind of magnification are you looking for? If you want 1:1 the
Sigma 90 and Pentax A 100/4 only go to 1:2. For 1:1, the Pentax A
100/2.8, kiron 100/2.5 and Vivitar Series 1 105/2.5 would be good
choices. I had the Vivitar Series 1 105/2.5 with the A setting. It
is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used.
