 Hi Bruce
It does not work for me. I would love a really full field of flowers here
and more of them in DOF.
Maybe you could have concentrated on the middle part leaving out the top and
bottom green and use another angle.
Can't explain it better...

I eventually had it sent over but in the meantime, the recital was
about to begin. So, I pulled out the Pentax MX which had a half used

began shooting. The film ran out just when the SD cards arrived so by
then I switched to the DS. But in the meantime the good shots were

PESO - Fairy Bower Falls

2007-04-01 Thread J and K Messervy
This is a 30 (!) shot panorama (5 rows of 6 shots). Each shot was taken at
55mm focal length and the stitched image was a little over 1gb and
equivalent to 123 megapixels! This has been heavily resized obviously but
I'll be printing this about 60cm by 35cm when I've got the money.

These falls are in Morton National Park in the NSW Southern Highlands and
last Sunday I had them all to myself. It's a 1.1 km walk one way to the
base of the falls and it is very steep...basically steps cut into the cliff.
The effort was worth it though, what a beautiful place it is.

Hmm, doe not do that much for me.

There are two or three slightly different (purple ?) colored flowers

Paul's first daff has inspired me to post this pic, hot off the press.
Our daffs (UK) have been out for over a couple of weeks now and a good
friend of my neighbour's has lived in this house for 50 years. In that
time he told me he has not seen decent photographs of either his house
or his daffs. I promised him I'd do both, for a couple of bottles of
wine. He hasn't seen it yet.

EOS 1DmII + SMC-K15mm aboard a Manfrotto 190, 1/60th at f11, ISO 200.
This will be pushed to about a 16X12 when I'm done.

This is a 30 (!) shot panorama (5 rows of 6 shots). Each shot was
 taken
 at
55mm focal length and the stitched image was a little over 1gb and
equivalent to 123 megapixels! This has been heavily resized
 obviously but
I'll be printing this about 60cm by 35cm when I've got the money.

These falls are in Morton National Park in the NSW Southern
 Highlands and
last Sunday I had them all to myself. It's a 1.1 km walk one way
 to the
base of the falls and it is very steep...basically steps cut into the
 cliff.

The effort was worth it though, what a beautiful place it is.

Two meters is a bit risky for your equipment though, you can see the little
droplets of molten metal flying arround. I know from experience that they
will attach and melt right into anything glass.

Also worth noting that looking down a lens straight at the arc can
damage your sight, possibly permanently. Never look straight at the
point of the welding . EVF's are fine.

I did plenty of welding when I built an offroad racer in the 1990s -
all sorts of odd things happen. I remember a stubborn bolt that need
some persuasion to leave its mooring, and when it dropped onto the floor
it disappeared. I later found it melted into the base of my boots.
Pulled it out, leaving a perfect imprint. Still there too. A trophy :-)

I'm sure Pentax can fix that screen quickly and probably without much
cost. But I wasn't talking about camera coverings. I've never used

Bong,

I like this.

A couple of suggestions/comments:
- In taking it, I think it would have been stronger with a bit wider
field of view and a slight downward tilt to obtain more of the piano
framing her.
- In rendering it, the primary subject is a bit hot and should be
selected and toned down a little.

But it's a good photo, a nice job.

Re: More K10D bad luck (Stupidity?)

2007-04-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hey Bob,

While I agree with Paul on using a proper camera bag to carry the
camera, there are times when I just want to put the camera and/or a
couple of lenses into your carry-on luggage for ease of transport
along with a small, folded flat shoulder bag for when I get to my
destination. In those situations, a camera pouch or case is very handy.

I recommend the lined, reinforced neoprene Op/Tech USA Soft Pouches
or Zing Action covers ... they make a range of sizes and shapes to
cover SLRs with various lenses. They're light weight, go on and off
the camera very quickly, and are very protective. The smallest Zing
model fits the *ist DS perfectly with a DA18-55 or A50/2.8 Macro ...
that's what I keep the camera in when it's in the storage drawer. One
of the middle size ones will fit the K10D perfectly. BH has them ...
as do most well stocked camera stores. I prefer to get them at the
store locally since then I can find the one that fits the particular
camera more easily.

I also use the neoprene Pelican lens pouches for transporting and
storing lenses ... most of my lenses fit well in their smallest size.
Very protective and nicely made.

These kinds of cases and pouches are washable so you can minimize
dust and dirt that tends to collect in them.

Godfrey

What I like is how the perspective draws your eye right up to the
falls. What I don't like so well is there is just too much foreground

just not dominant enough. After the crop, I'd like to see it again.

===
Okay, honest, I think you can do better. While it's not a bad gallery, it is
not a great gallery. For one thing, you were shooting at the wrong time of
day, too mid day, shadows are too deep and contrasty. Nature shots work best
in morning or late day. It looks like a pretty area. I have walked on Mt.
Diablo fairly often where I live and I have lot of photos that look like this.
(I
do like the bottle on the cracked earth). So, *if these were my photos*, I
would look at them and think I often had not simplified enough -- that I had
often not dug deep enough and figured out exactly what I liked about a
particular spot or area. Hard to explain what I mean, Boris, but nature is
pretty so
just shooting it can produce some pretty shots. But pow or really good or
great landscape/nature photography has more. Some sort of graphic or
compositional element that stands out. I recommend a look at John Shaw's work
(he has a
good site on the web). Or Harald Rust's in the PUG. :-)

I know what I aspire to, myself, landscape-wise, and I rarely achieve it.
It's not easy.

Hope that helps and is not too brutal. I guess I am saying, try again; you
are getting there.

I saw a few of the advanced shooters in the GFM contest, use the Kirk extension.

Would you still use the flash at full power, to get your range, if
using a 300 or 400 lens, or is it a trial and error till you get your

Incredible snow crystals. Leaves me in awe. And not just of your

and ethereal can still be so individual and unique, one just has to stand

Marnie aka Doe ;-)

=

It took a while, but I finally got some acceptable snow crystal shots
this season.

Here are a few:

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/stream/2007/070303/IMGP0640.htm
http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/stream/2007/070303/IMGP0646.htm

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/stream/2007/070303/IMGP0662cr.htm

I'm not a big fan of the perfect, paper cut out, absolutely symmetric
snow crystal. For me, these ragged / run through the mill subjects are
what it's all about.

It's interesting - I had shifted over to using a Sigma 50mm EX f2.8
macro lens for snow crystals last winter. Before that I used either an M
50 f4 macro or M 50 f 1.7 standard lens. (Lenses are reverse mounted on
gobs of extension.)

Anyhow - I wanted some new snowflake shots for the Pentax Gallery so I
pulled out the M50 f4 and used it on Saturday. Independent of that, I
finally remembered how to get the lighting right (it seems to take
longer every year...) I have to say - that old relic of a macro lens
really kicks. It _is_ slow and dim with all the extension, but it still
really produces the best images. I stopped using it because the aperture
was slow in the cold - not stuck, but slow. So I have to tap the
aperture arm on it to get it to fully stop down. I'll definitely be
getting it fixed.

The rest of Saturday's shot's (and the more recent other shots from this
season) are here:

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/stream/stream05.htm

Commentary is here:

 That's certainly crisp and dramatic.

I second that.

I remember that I had problems there composing a shot that would
look nice as a stand-alone picture (as opposed to a set of
photos). Chateau Chambord has too many details, and if you try
to shoot the entire castle, all details become too small (and crowded).
If you try to shoot just one (or a few) of the ... ghm.. what would
you call them - towers? - then the picture is no longer reach enough.

Even in this case, I have a bit of the same problem I had with mine:
on one hand, there is no single focus point for the sight to catch on,
(because there are many of them), and it is not, say, a mesmerizing flower
field which works without any focus point.
Dramatic look created by BW with contrast-enhancement (through
the conversion filter) helps in this situation.

There is indeed a desire to pan down a bit, as Rick Womer suggested,
but if I remember correctly, that would bring in more details of another
sort, and that can disperse the attention even more.

So, nice composition and BW solution.

Igor

Thanks, Marnie, I really appreciate your comment. Obviously those atta
boy or otherwise praising comments do less good than constructive
criticism. I mean, if I produce a good photo and everyone is telling me
it is good, it is, hmmm, well, I already knew that ;-).

So to what you said. Please don't read me here as if I am defending
myself, because I am not. I am rather trying to present my opinion so
that we can discuss yours and mine as one.

For starters, I don't normally control the time of day when my family
goes for a walk. All I can control is what kind of stuff I load to my
photo bag and as of now - do I take or do I leave behind my monopod.
This is given ;-). Though I have some afternoon trips in mind, it is not
always possible to control.

When I was shooting I did realize that the sun was high above and
shadows were harsh. I tried, and apparently did not do very well, to
look for those motifs that did not emphasize the harshness of the light.
In fact, what I was after were shallow DOF shots with my 77 Limited
lens. I shot some 'scapes but I tried to keep their number to a minimum.
And still I went for DOF motif hoping to distract the viewer away from
the lighting.

Thanks, Kenneth. In fact, after this shot I realized that I want a 100

smallest and because it has standard 49 mm filter thread. Having that
wide enablement suggestion by Cotty from earlier work I presented makes
me think real hard about my wallet :-).

I shall keep your suggestion for eliminating the sky though. It is a

BTW, it sounds like LR does a similar set up for its web page as in
PS, with the 3 subdirectories. To set that up, would one great the

then change the index page to reflect the new, main directory.

When i used PS to gen web pages a few years back, i just kept putting
the pictures in the 3 subfolders and renamed the index to index100
index101 etc.

Re: Another PayPal Scam

2007-04-01 Thread P. J. Alling
It's a numbers game. Step one, get a free web account, step two get a
free email accounts. For each 10,000 scam e-mails expect between .01 to
.1 % positive responses. Repeat step one and two after the ISP shuts
you down. If everything is free except for the labor you only have to
be successful for a few thousand dollars a week. Lets face it. If
politicians can buy votes with the voter's own money, this is bound to
work on at least 1 person in a 1000.

Makes me wonder, are there actually people out there stupid enough to
give these guys their banking information? I guess so, I mean, why would
there be so many scammers if there weren't any scammees? The usual con
game is like the Nigerian thing, where the mark is lured in by promises
of illegal money only not so blatantly obvious.

How come you are getting Shel's' email?
