Hi there,

first question against the conspiracy theory - does the authorized
service center have their own clean room?

BR, Margus

Mark Erickson wrote:
Thought folks on the list might want to know: I talked to a service rep at
California Precision Service (Sacramento-based Pentax authorized service
center) about my DA* lens that I gave them for warranty work. The tech
checked out the lens with their test equipment and verified the existence of
a centering defect. He contacted the Pentax USA folks for repair
information, and they told him that (and I quote) they're the only ones who
have the information and they're not getting a release from Japan to
 release any information.

So the lens is going to the factory for service.

I could be a conspiracy theorist and say that Pentax in Japan is covering
something up. Realistically, I don't think so. The fact is, the lens is
quite new. Most likely, Pentax doesn't have service manuals and tech
training in place yet to roll out procedures and parts lists to their
 authorized service centers.

I'm more interested to see if they fix/replace the lens or if it comes back
untouched with a statement that it is in spec. Since a qualified service
center (and not just me) observed the problem, I'm hoping that they'll
repair or replace the lens. I'll keep you posted

I live in China. Overall, I expect hosting the Olympics to be a triumph
for China, as the media here keep predicting. However, I'm sure
there will be problems, perhaps even some catastrophes.

Here's something I wrote to a group of friends a few months back:

Next year is the Olympics. Eight is a lucky number in Chinese, sounds
like the word for prosperity (and 4 unlucky, sounds like death), so
they have scheduled the Olympics to start on 2008-08-08.

They'll be in Beijing. My advice to anyone considering a trip to China
during that period would be to avoid Beijing unless there are specific
Olympic events you want to see. Chinese services for travellers --
hotels, transport and so on -- routinely raise their prices at busy
times. I reckon they will almost certainly raise them quite a bit for
the Olympics. Also, I suspect half the thieves, beggars and
prostitutes in China will be in Beijing for the occasion, looking for
tourist dollars. China has lots of all those.

Anybody who thinks a city full of prostitutes would be great fun,
head for Thailand instead. The business is legal there, which it isn't
in China (it is ubiquitous, but that's another story) and you almost
certainly do not want to have to deal with Chinese cops over this,
let alone visit a Chinese jail.

No doubt Beijing is an interesting place, lots of history and
monuments, plenty of shopping, good tourist facilities, ...
However, this may not be the best time to go there and the rest
of China is interesting too.

Not following, Bill. At 135 mm the lens definitely was improved by a -4

blessing. It may be a curse.

After seeing what the K20D does with high ISOs plus all the other new
features, I have to admit I desire this camera--but having read all the
stuff about the focus test capability, I'm a little nervous about that. My
head is spinning! I'd have to learn how to do focus tests, which I'm sure I
could do, but maybe down the line. Cheers, Christine

GESO: Stitched panoramas

2008-03-23 Thread Mark Roberts
Yesterday I went out for my usual Saturday morning run with friends. We
run 12-16 miles around North Park, just north (duh) of Pittsburgh, then
have coffee bagels and visit the running shop next to the bagel place.
Last Christmas I gave the running shop a print of one of my panoramas, a
shot of Point State Park with a runner which they framed and put in the
window.

So yesterday the manager of the shop tells me that someone from the
Pittsburgh Sports/Exhibition Authority came in, saw the photo and wanted
to find out about buying one. I sent an email and will probably be in
touch later this week, but in the meantime I thought I should at least
put the photo up on my web site. And while I was at it I decided to put
a selection of my best stitched panoramas on one page. So here it is:

http://www.robertstech.com/panos.htm

I think I've shown all of these in the past at one time or another (and
the Montrichard shot just last week), but there may be one or two that
are completely new. (Then again, maybe not!)

I spent a month in Australia in 2006. I found myself using my widest

I only got to visit Adelaide, Cairns, and the Outback (Uluru, Alice

I ate at a fantastic French restaurant in Cairns along with some

ACR modifies JPEG files?

2008-03-23 Thread Charles Robinson
I've recently taken to using Adobe Camera Raw as the first step to
pulling files into Photoshop - whether they are RAW files or JPEG -
because the ACR tools are a nice quick way to get an image more-or-
less where I want it before fiddling around with the finer controls in
CS3 (especially white balance!).

However, I've noticed an annoying behavior which I cannot explain. I
always sort my photo files in finder by last modified which is
usually the date/time the image was created in the camera. But any
JPEG file which I've opened with ACR has its last modified date/time
set to the date/time I opened it with ACR. This is even though the
contents of the JPEG file are clearly the same as the original file (I
always do a save as and put the results of my edits into a
completely different directory).

Just as a test, I checked out how everything behaves if I set the JPEG
file to Read-Only before opening it... and everything works as before,
except this DOES prevent the file modification date from being changed
(yay).

Does anyone know why this is happening - or better yet, a workaround
which does NOT involve setting every file to read-only before I open
it? This is definitely not an end-of-the-world problem, but it is
slightly annoying.

Some of the EXIF metadata fields, and maybe the IPTC ones, too, allow
software like Bridge and Photoshop to embed in the photo the fact that
they were used in the processing of the image. It's possible that ACR
is updating these metadata values, even if it doesn't modify the image
data. You could try using something like exifer a TIFF tag dumper to
write the metadata before and after to two different text files and
compare them to see if there are changes there.

That sounds like a good clue, thanks!

I also just figured out that I can set the preferences for my photo
folders to show the Date Created field in a column along with (or
instead of) the date modified field. Date Created doesn't change,
so that's a relatively painless solution.I'll see if I can figure
out what's being changed in the files, though, just for the fun of it.

 Hi!

I went today to one of the local shops to buy me a pair of trousers.
Apparently the shelves were almost empty. So, I asked salesperson, when
do you expect a new shipment? We don't was the answer. The Olympics in
 China are the reason.

I chuckled and went out of the shop...

I did a quick survey a while back, and concluded that it is now virtually
impossible to live
without Chinese manufactured goods, as there are, in many instances, no options
to buy non
Chinese manufactured products.

What this means to me is that it is very difficult to not buy products
manufactured in what I
consider to be a human rights nightmare.
I prefer to support economies that are not built on slave labour, I would
rather not support
regimes that use an iron fist to squash freedom of speech and association or
legitimate protest
against the governing power.

What this also means is that China now has the economic clout to pretty much
shut down any
country that crosses it by protesting the way it mistreats it's citizens (the
onging abuses in
Tibet as an example) by cutting off trade to that country.

Don't chuckle too much...

Ansel Adams mentioned a fairly common visual syndrome that effectively keeps

To check to see if your sensor isn't level, put the camera on a tripod and

Bill, you're right. In Israel we have plenty of goods produced in Turkey
that are probably even of lower quality than those produced in China,
but as a matter of fact, some Turkish or Chinese products are very good.

I did not chuckle hmmm on the means by which China became what it is
now. I chucked at the salesperson at the store. She was so hmmm naive or
straightforward about the fact that I'd better buy something now because
there may be nothing to buy in the few months to come.

I will probably take the second half of this talk off list.

You don't have to do the focus tests. If you leave them all at zero,
you have the same basic setup as the K10D. But the tests and
adjustments can be helpful with some lenses.

(Then again, maybe not!)

camera and printed home made with a JOBO CPP2, those old things that I
still do. Here is also a K20D image of a tulip. All that discussion
with AF and K20D is becoming a great concern. Keep sending post on

Frustrated With AF Problems--Update

2008-03-23 Thread Joseph Tainter
Just to refresh everyone's memory:

My defective DA* 16-50 is ready to go to Pentax to correct the fact that
it won't autofocus to infinity at 16 mm on the K20D. The K20D has to go
  with it.

Before sending them off I thought I would check the focus asjustment of
the DA* 50-135. I tested it at 135 mm, figuring that the most rigorous
test would be at that focal length because that's where the depth of
field is smallest. It turns out that an adjustment of -4 gives the
sharpest distance focus at that focal length. But then I noticed that
when I zoom the lens to 50 mm it now autofocuses beyond infinity, and
  the images are not sharp.

Arghhh! Okay, I guess the DA* 50-135 has to go to Pentax too to be
calibrated to the K20D. But this is disturbing and frustrating. I have
been concerned that it may be difficult or impossible to adjust the AF
of zoom lenses through the K20D--adjusting for correct focus at one
focal length could mean incorrect focus elsewhere. What I have seen so
far (with both DA* lenses) confirms that suspicion.

Joe, I think you ran the test backwards. Depth of field is not the
issue, depth of focus is. As focal length extends, depth of field
decreases, but depth of focus increases. Try calibrating your 50-135 at
50mm, and then see how it does at the long end. I am starting to think
that my long time eschewing of zoom lenses may not be such a bad thing
though.

William Robb

-

Can someone please explain to me why depth of focus increases at longer
focal lengths?

Anyway, I tested the lens again this morning at 50mm, running from -2 to
+2 AF adjustments. If there are any differences, they are exceedingly
small. At 200% magnification I have to conclude that at 50 mm the lens
performs best at 0 focus adjustment.

But this still leaves the lens misfocusing at 135 mm. If I correct for
that it misfocuses at 50 mm.

Joe

That sounds like a good clue, thanks!

I also just figured out that I can set the preferences for my photo
folders to show the Date Created field in a column along with (or
instead of) the date modified field. Date Created doesn't change,
so that's a relatively painless solution.I'll see if I can figure
out what's being changed in the files, though, just for the fun of it.

The latest versions of Camera Raw, as well as Lightroom, will save
metadata edits for IPTC data into JPEG files.

Date Created and Date Modified fields visible to the file system are
different from the Data/Time Original ('Capture Date') timestamp in
the EXIF data.

Obtain a copy of EXIFtool ... free from
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ ...
and look at a JPEG file prior to opening it with Camera Raw. Then
open it, edit something, etc, close it, and run EXIFtool on it again.
You'll see exactly what changed.

Yes, but, if it looks focused, but it actually is not,

Then there's an issue with the focusing screen or mirror alignment, not
the autofocus system. Needs to be repaired.

Re: DA* 16-50 lens service update

I'm not sure how California Precision does dust control. I have had them
repair several lenses, including an A*20mm F4 macro and a DA 21 Ltd. In all
cases, the lenses came back clean inside and out.

Is there something special about the DA* 16-50 that would require, say, a
class 100 clean room?

at the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. This was shot with the DS2 and
the DA 50-200. Nice light lens that performed quite well that day.
