FW: Foto8 Monthly Digest May 2008
My favourite photo magazine, ei8ht, has changed from a quarterly to a half-yearly, and also changed the type of contents. The first of the new editions arrived last week and I had a chance to look at it this morning. It is even better than it used to be, and I thoroughly recommend it (once again) to anybody who is interested in contemporary photojournalism. They send a regular digest to subscribers, with links to the online presence www.foto8.com and various photo-stores, which I have forwarded for anyone who is interested. Ralf R. Radermacher escribió: Hello all, I'm looking for an AF version of my SMC-M 4.5/80-200 mm. Yes, I know there's no direct AF equivalent of this lens. I'd want something with the same image quality (I'm actually very fond of this lens). A few mm more at the far end wouldn't hurt either. What about the ubiquitous F and FA xx-200 or xx-300 mm lenses? Any other suggestions? 3rd party lenses? I have had several Pentax telezooms. The F 70-210 mm. 4-5.6 that some other people recommended is a sharp lens and an excellent choice. I also had the FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6. It isn't as good as the F 70-210, but it is a really good performer too. Now I have the FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and the F 80-200 mm. 4.7-5.6. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, the F or FA 80-200 4.7-5.6 is surprisingly good for a modest consumer zoom lens. It is very light and small, doesn't change its length when zooming (it is an internal zoom lens) and its minimum focus distance is 1.1 metres, and is optically quite good, not as good the F 70-210 but on par with the FA 80-320. I recommend the F version because it has a metal lens mount, not plastic as the FA. VESO - the end of the slide show
Video every so often I heard about the Animoto service on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] podcast. It's a simple way to make highly animated videos from your images. Here are a couple of short samples on my blog http://georgesweblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/animoto-end-of-slide-show.html. It's interesting to see the slides and special effects change with the rhythm of the music. You can generate 30 second samples for free. Longer videos are $2 each. If you get hooked, the all-you-can-eat plan is $30/year. It's really easy to get hooked. DAMHIKT Oh yeah, they make it very easy to share the videos hosted on their site. You can also download them, view them on your computer, load them on your video iPod, or upload them to your Smugmug site. They also have connections to automatically import from Smugmug, Flickr and many other photo hosting sites. Dave you didn't know it but you must have been channeling Ronald McDonald. A charity group I'm associated with collects those for the metal value. If you have a hundred thousand people collecting and dropping them off you get a metric ton of high quality aluminum alloy in a commercially recoverable quantity for very little individual effort. You can probably find a group running a Tabs for Tots program who'd be happy for the contribution. Then you don't have OCD, you're a philanthropist. Re: VESO - the end of the slide show
How do I put this gently. I can't. That is by far the most annoying way to view good images that I have ever seen. For me it would make bad images even worse as I would be spending all of my time looking at the effects and ignoring the content. If you're a good photographer you don't need it, if you do, you should sell all your expensive gear and buy a PS, the simpler the better. Only take pictures of the kids and your pets to show the family, because they're the only ones who'll bother to look at your work. I'd second what Carlos wrote below. I've had both 80-320 and 80-200/4.7-5.6 lenses. I found the adequate but both having PF issues with my digital cameras. Re: VESO - the end of the slide show
I should have started out by saying you'll either love or hate Animoto. I'm having a lot of fun with it. This is definitely not about fine photography. It's about using your pictures to generate something for fun. Eye-candy to satisfy the short-attention-span set. My 80 year old mother would hate it. She wants to stare at every photo for a long time. My 24 year old daughter thinks it's the newest hotness. She grew up on fast paced stuff like this. I created another short video from about 75 images taken at neighborhood holiday get-togethers and other parties over the last several years. The video is just under two minutes. They loved it. It generated lots of conversation about old times and how everyone's looks and hair styles had changed. A similar video from about 50 shots taken at work during a new employee reception has also been very popular. (These are not publicly posted to respect the privacy of the folks in the photos.) These videos are more on the animated scrap book, music video end of the scale and are about as far from fine art as you can get.
