Beautiful model - great colours. My favourite is 2008-02d.htm but
they are all excellent.

I think I voted on some of these in the Pentax Gallery (I gave them

Re: Two team plowing, new crop

2008-07-22 Thread David J Brooks
Thanks every one for the comments.

The paper left it to me to decide which to submit, as they liked them both.

I sent them the second crop, which i like a bit better.

Next year, i'll take the faster 70-200 and should have less of these
semi missed shots.

Brian, i used the de saturation method from the video Godfrey sent to
the list a few weeks back. Seems to work very well, for me anyway.

Count me as one of those who likes the second version better. The first
looks as if you cut off the tops of the horses' heads accidentally. The
new version looks deliberate and really lends it some intensity, IMO.

My hard drive has the death clicks. Previously I had a couple of noisy
(clattery) startups but it has run quietly so I've just left it on full
time. Today the clicking has become almost constant. What do I need
 to do
or get (apart from a replacement HD) to clone or ghost the OS and
software over to another drive? I want to avoid a clean install
 because of
the enormous number of updates between the build version of XP that I
 have
on my backup discs, and SP3. I also want to avoid having to reinstall
 and
 configure my other software.

Should I leave it on despite the clicks? I worry that if I shut down it
won't reboot. It's Win XP Home.

Anyway, if you look at her shoulder on the right side of the frame, she's

The Tokina bodies are fairly good, but not up to Limited standards.

A warthog on a bicycle

2008-07-22 Thread Bob W
My new warthog arrived this morning.

When I was cycling around bits of Yorkshire last week I had to keep my
camera in the saddlebag unprotected, which made me nervous. I recalled
that I used to have something called a warthog into which you can
insert a camera for ample cosy protection in suchlike circumstances.

CCS, the company that used to make warthogs, are now defunct, sad to
say, but you can still get your own warthog while stocks last from
these people, who bought the remaining stock from CCS and are very
prompt:
http://www.thedarkroom.co.uk/products_class.php?productID=A108.

It's a classic photo accessory and it's a shame to see the end of
them. They were originally developed for rock climbers and similar
tough outdoorsy people, and are ridiculously over-padded robust,
which makes them ideal for sticking in a saddle-bag or a rucksack.
They are also brilliantly simple - no frills, just a velcro closure, a
removable shoulder strap and a belt loop thing. No buckles, harnesses,
pockets or other fol-de-rols. Before ordering it from the company
above I scoured the shops in London for something similar, and there's
just nothing else like it - most similar things are not very well
padded, or not water-resistant, or are covered in zips and buckles
which make it damned near impossible to get the camera out and put it
back in quickly.

I can just about get the E-1 + 14-54mm lens + battery grip in it.
Without the battery grip it's perfect.

That's really strange (to me anyway). I have one of the Pentax 35mm
Ltds, and quite clearly the outward appearance of the Tokina is nothing
like the Pentax. The Tokina's filter size is different (52mm vs Pentax'
49mm), and it weighs a fair bit more too (340g vs Pentax @ 215g). I
guess the extra weight is the addition of an AF motor req'd by Nikon and
Canon. The Ltd assumes the Pentax body's screw drive.

But all the optical characteristics match *very* closely between the two
lenses -- pretty much one-to-one. Is it possible that Tokina is using
the identical glass (minus SMC) and has wrapped their own casing around
it all?

 other mounts?

Tokina suspiciously has a 35/2.8 macro, all of a sudden...

It looks like a very different design cosmetically.

Is it possible that Tokina is using
the identical glass (minus SMC) and has wrapped their own casing around
 it all?

 -bmw

Almost assuredly so, they're already doing that for the 50-135, 16-50
and 10-17 (and Pentax does the same for the Tokina 12-24). Same
optical design, different coatings and physical design.
