Did you notice what make of bike it is? I did, but have since forgotten. The model seems to be International. As I said, one of the things I learned that day is that short lenses are good for including background. Part of that has to do with the wider angle of view, part of that has to do with the greater depth of field. In retrospect that shot would probably have been better with the DA40 or even the DFA50, at a much wider aperture. Looks like it's seen better days, but still, all bikes are beautiful (in their own way). As Paul said, the framing of the bike is very well done, and I like the conversion, too. If you mean framing as in composition, thank you. If you mean framing as in pretty lugs, I agree. Nice framing and sharpness to the shot. Just wish that car was not there, but what can you do eh. Dave On Sat, Dec 26, 2009 at 6:53 PM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: About a week ago, when I left the dojo after the morning Aikido class, the weather was too nice to do what I was supposed to, so I went down to Pacific Ave in Santa Cruz, grabbed a bite to eat then spent some time wandering around the area learning to shoot with my 20mm lens. I was somewhat surprised at how educational it can be to go on a photo walk with a new focal length, especially one that isn't in the standard range. I'd say that my chief lesson of the day is to use a wide angle lens to include more of the background, no matter how much of the frame the primary subject fills. With all of the work that I've been doing on the house, I didn't get around to processing those shots until this afternoon. When I was processing them, I saw this street shot of a 20ish year old roadbike and thought of Frank, so I processed it in black and white: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4217410740/in/set-72157622951220933/ -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Documenting Life in Rural Ontario. www.caughtinmotion.com http://brooksinthecountry.blogspot.com/ York Region, Ontario, Canada -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO - The Christmas Window
Nice story and photo, Frank. Reminded me of seeing the Christmas windows at Marshal Fields and Carson Pire Scott department stores on State Street. Fields is gone; it's now Macy's, and Carson's is also gone. Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: frank theriault knarftheria...@gmail.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net Sent: Thursday, December 24, 2009 3:05 PM Subject: PESO - The Christmas Window As many of you know, when I was a kid I lived in Montreal. There were no less than four major department stores downtown back then (don't know how many there are now, but I know that in Toronto there's only one of the old stores left). It was always a treat to be brought downtown by my father during the Christmas season. We always had to walk by all four stores, to look at the Christmas windows. Morgan's was at one end of the shopping area of St. Catherine's Street (the main drag), and we always started there and walked west to finish at Ogilvy's. Ogilvy's had to be last, because they always had the best windows. They alternated annually between two completely different animated woodland scenes. Sometimes the crowd was three or four thick in front of Ogilvy's window - people stood there forever, just watching. My dad would always exhort me to push my way to the front; being a kid had some privileges, I guess. He'd wait patiently at the back of the crowd for me, never once telling me to hurry or that it was time to go. I think he enjoyed it as much as me. As I said, Toronto has one grand old department store left: it was once Robert Simpson's, now it's the flagship store for the Bay (Hudson's Bay Company). I saw this mother and daughter enjoying one of their windows, and the memories came flooding back: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2009/12/christmas-window.html I would have liked to taken a few more than this one, but the fur protesters caught my attention, and the one I took of them was the last of the roll. I mean, OK, it's not in focus, the background is mostly black (at least given this rendering), but the flower does have a stem, and that's the green bit. Just because it *could* be a skulking triffid does not obviously imply to me that it shouldn't be there. Re: The Christmas Dead
I zoomed in for a look. That was reality in those days. I remember reading once that Christmas became a children oriented holiday in the late 19 th century when parents began to feel safe enough to let themselves become attached to their children. It's also extremely sad if you read the inscription on the foreground headstone. Bob I especially like the one in the lower left corner. The range and contrast give it an ethereal look. Actually, they all have some of that. --Original Message-- From: Bob W Sender: pdml-boun...@pdml.net To: 'Pentax-Discuss Mail List' ReplyTo: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: The Christmas Dead Sent: Dec 27, 2009 4:53 PM I spent Christmas in Yorkshire. We had snow on the ground for the first time in many years and it looked very Dickensian. On Christmas morning I went for a walk on Christchurch Stray, just by my mother's house, and the local church just after the morning service (which I missed, for the 52nd year in a row...). Being full of joy I have decided to relax my normally Talibanic rule of not mucking about with pictures, and slapped on a bit of Aged Photo preset, to up the Dickens quotient. http://www.web-options.com/Christchurch/ Hope you enjoy them, Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. Fun stuff. A nice narrative. The pic of Darrel is my favorite. PESO - Boxing Day1
Took a trip out to San Francisco's Union Square on Boxing Day. Lots of folks out and about. This trio looked to be enjoying themselves. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Nn-R2KLB88M/Sze6Vv-Xx6I/BBU/QAbXhMygA2w/s800/IMGP0556.JPG K7, DA 17-70 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: A Winter Walk
Lovely shots, Christine. A week ago we had almost 2 ft of snow on the ground. Today, there's nothing at all. Can't say I'm jealous of your snowfall, though!
