I have to agree with Paul here (although I recognize that I can be the
king of distracting backgrounds). Interesting lugs on that old thing.
Did you notice what make of bike it is?

I did, but have since forgotten. The model seems to be International.

As I said, one of the things I learned that day is that short lenses
are good for including background. Part of that has to do with the
wider angle of view, part of that has to do with the greater depth of
field. In retrospect that shot would probably have been better with
the DA40 or even the DFA50, at a much wider aperture.

Looks like it's seen better days, but still, all bikes are beautiful
(in their own way). As Paul said, the framing of the bike is very
well done, and I like the conversion, too.

If you mean framing as in composition, thank you. If you mean framing
as in pretty lugs, I agree.

One of these days I should do some portraits of my legnano.

frank

About a week ago, when I left the dojo after the morning Aikido class, the
weather was too nice to do what I was supposed to, so I went down to Pacific
Ave in Santa Cruz, grabbed a bite to eat then spent some time wandering
around the area learning to shoot with my 20mm lens.  I was somewhat
surprised at how educational it can be to go on a photo walk with a new
focal length, especially one that isn't in the standard range.  I'd say
that my chief lesson of the day is to use a wide angle lens to include more
of the background, no matter how much of the frame the primary subject
 fills.

With all of the work that I've been doing on the house, I didn't get around
to processing those shots until this afternoon. When I was processing them,
I saw this street shot of a 20ish year old roadbike and thought of Frank, so
I processed it in black and white:

As many of you know, when I was a kid I lived in Montreal. There
were no less than four major department stores downtown back then
(don't know how many there are now, but I know that in Toronto there's
only one of the old stores left). It was always a treat to be brought
downtown by my father during the Christmas season. We always had to
walk by all four stores, to look at the Christmas windows. Morgan's
was at one end of the shopping area of St. Catherine's Street (the
main drag), and we always started there and walked west to finish at
Ogilvy's. Ogilvy's had to be last, because they always had the best
windows. They alternated annually between two completely different
animated woodland scenes.

Sometimes the crowd was three or four thick in front of Ogilvy's
window - people stood there forever, just watching. My dad would
always exhort me to push my way to the front; being a kid had some
privileges, I guess. He'd wait patiently at the back of the crowd for
me, never once telling me to hurry or that it was time to go.

I think he enjoyed it as much as me.

As I said, Toronto has one grand old department store left: it was
once Robert Simpson's, now it's the flagship store for the Bay
(Hudson's Bay Company). I saw this mother and daughter enjoying one
of their windows, and the memories came flooding back:

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2009/12/christmas-window.html

I would have liked to taken a few more than this one, but the fur
protesters caught my attention, and the one I took of them was the
last of the roll.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

You weren't expecting anything else were you? :-)

Why, yes we were, in fact. You've let us down.

I'll try to make up for it:

CORMORANTS FOR CHRISTMAS (by Speck Roberts)

Cormorants for Christmas,
They make me very glad!
(A Christmas without cormorants,
Ought never to be had!)

If you've no cormorants this year,
I surely wish you well,
But you won't have as much fun as,
We of the PDML.

I've found most congenial way,
This day to celebrate,
I'll raise my glass until I drink,
Frank's horizons straight.

It's Cotty whom we have to thank,
For all this cormorant fun,
It's clear he's gone to the dark side,
In more ways than just one.

But Christian was first to see,
The ideal that we seek:
A dirty, smelly seabird,
With a dead fish in its beak.

Paul Stenquist shoots a lot of cars,
In motion and at rest,
But - no offense - we all prefer,
Snaps of his grandkids best.

Should any PDML member,
Get a little out of hand,
We know Bill Robb will offer,
A gentle reprimand.

And when Doug Brewer gets upset,
You'll surely hear him shout,
The traditional invective:
Marnie, clean your mailbox out!

The PDML's official drink?
Of course it is tequila,
('Cause it's the only word I know,
That rhymes with Christine Aguila)

Shall we renounce our cormorants?
Not till it snows in hell!
(Or not, at least, until Dave Brooks,
Learns how to type and spell).

And so another Christmas day,
Is almost in the bag,
I wish you all a cormorant,
Or at least a damn good shag.

Rock on! Cheers, Christine

The hardest part is coming up with the name. Choices!

Should I name it creatively, like Orange Jesus taking a chance I'll

Should I name it logically, like Internal iMac Drive so there will

The hardest part is coming up with the name. Choices!

Should I name it creatively, like Orange Jesus taking a chance I'll

Should I name it logically, like Internal iMac Drive so there will
be no doubt about it?
Should I name it after my pets? School chums? Lagers? Work groupings?

So many choices, so little time!

as i understand it, each model has a standard against which the battery

AppleCare for weak batteries, but these were for older models -- none

the iBook G4 is a little too old for this to matter, though

In the interest of full disclosure, mine are a mix.

iMac Internal 320, Imagination Imagery, Imagination Workspace, Restore
Workspace, Restored Volumes, iTunes 1 TB, Raid 1 600, Raid 2 600, Time
Machine 1 TB, Another 1 TB, Daily Retro BU 500, and McMac's iDisk.

By the way, never rename your iDisk (the data that hangs in the
cloud). You will create one or more ghost drives, some of which
contain real data, some not, and finding or changing anything becomes
a hassle. Actually, I just checked on that, and apparently Apple made
some correction so that my current McMac's iDisk and the real iDisk
are both identical alias' of the data I have in the cloud such as my
web sites, blog, etc. So it's fixed after a year!

various lenses. On the way back across the Atlantic he was building a
website with iWeb. Hasn't quite got the finesse of a proper web building
app, but it certainly works.

I've imported it into my web app and put his pages up on my site - enjoy!

http://www.cottysnaps.com/stef/index.html

Disclaimer: somehow he managed to import his jpegs at minimal settings
so file sizes are small, with no links to larger pics at this time -
we'll start from scratch once I've given him the basics in Softpress

He's not on the list, so if you want to email him direct he will welcome
