Re: Tripod in carry-on luggage?
2010/2/22 gldnbearz gldnbearz.p...@gmail.com: I've looked on the TSA web site the airline's web site, but can't find anything re: carrying my tripod in my carry-on luggage. Here's the tripod in question: http://tinyurl.com/yas76je I agree with Paul. That thing is small enough to fit snugly into a containter that's inside the volume restrictions of carryon, so you'll probably be fine. I would not have hesitated to bring it in and out of London Heathrow, at least. In December I brought my ThinkTank Airport Security bag with a Manfrotto 055 tripod (http://turl.no/80b) strapped to its outside, and it didn't raise a brow. I had to remove the tripod from the bag to fit it into the overhead locker. It looks like Sigma announced some interesting looking lenses
I was poking around in the silly hope that the various colors of K-x announced for Europe would be coming to the states. As most people expected, there weren't really any announcements from Pentax, though Sigma seems to have announced some lenses that could be rather interesting if they have good image quality for the cost. Fast glass is always appealing to me. My 20/1.8 is back from Sigma and the nasty bumpiness in the focus may be gone. Time will tell, and I've been happy with the optics on it. 85/1.4 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022015sigma85mm.asp I've been surprised at how often the 2/3 stop of 1.4 over 1.8 comes in handy. The little bit of extra reach and especially speed of this over my 77/1.8 could be handy. I'm sure the optics would be better than the Korean 85/1.4. Though I love my 77/1.8 so much that it's hard to imagine my using anything else in it's range when I didn't absolutely need the little extra bit of speed. 70-200/2.8 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022016sigma70mm200mm.asp I doubt it would be nearly as nice as the Pentax 80-200/2.8, but it'd probably be a lot more affordable. 17-50 / 2.8 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022014sigma17mm50mm.asp Same as above but with the 16-50. 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 rectilinear http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022011sigma8mm16mm.asp If you're going to go wide, this could be very interesting. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

If you want me to compare and comment on statistics, get me stats and graphs from the same source, or at least comparable sources. You're the one who's putting the stats forward, the burden's on you. Furthermore, the FBI is known to encourage police departments in the US to report crime statistics based on the charges filed. So if I'm charged with battery, that's what gets into the statistics. If I make a deal with the prosecutor or the charges are dismissed or I'm found not guilty, it's still in the stats as battery. I have no idea how this works in Canada, but in GB the statistics are based on the resolution. I'm sure you figure out where this leads. EXACTLY! You have no idea how it works in Canada. So you've admitted that your stats are incomparable, so your initial assertion is meaningless. In Canada we our calculation of violent crime includes assaults, including common assault. According to Statistics Canada: The violent crime rate declined by 2.2% in 1996, marking the fourth consecutive annual decrease. Prior to these declines, the violent crime rate increased for 15 straight years. Much of this increase is directly attributable to a large increase in the rate of common assaults (level 1), the least serious form of assault, which accounts for 6 in 10 violent crimes. Compared to 1986, the 1996 violent crime rate is 24.4% higher. If the category of assault level 1 is excluded from total violent crime, the increase drops to only 6.7%. Source: http://tinyurl.com/yk28xtp http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/af-fdr.cgi?l=engloc=http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85-002-x/85-002-x1997008-eng.pdft=Canadian%20crime%20statistics,%201996 In the US, violent crimes includes only the more serious assaults (aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon, assault causing bodily harm) and does ~not~ include (the much more common) Assault Level I. So our stats are skewed to look higher than yours. Again, your sources have compared apples with oranges. You're the one who asserts that our violent crime rates are higher than yours, the burden is on you to provide ~meaningful~ statistics to back up your claim. I've backed up my statement by showing the fallacy in your argument. Your mayor has been, very publicly, pointing his finger south for a while now, blaming the US for all the guns involved in violent crime in Toronto. The fact is, there are no facts. He's got media reports and knee-jerking lefties to base it on and that's it. No, what you said was, their [Canadian] government has gone back to blaming the US for their crime. We have never, to my knowledge, blamed the US for our crime. The mayor of Toronto, David Millar, has stated that most illegal guns in Toronto have been brought up from the US. Whether he's accurate or not, that's ~far different~ from your initial assertion. I have problems challenging what you say when you restate your position mid-argument. I will agree that Millar said that most (not all as you state) illegal guns used in the commission of crimes in Toronto were illegally brought across the border from the US. I don't know how he arrived at that, and neither do I care. He didn't say what you initially said. Have a nice day. Thanks! You, too. I will, and I hope you do, too! cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Flash sync volt of K7 and K20D
*Disclaimer: If you have any questions or concerns about the flash sync voltage, use a Wein SafeSync or other method of reducing the trigger voltage* That said, I did a Google for this and these are two answers that came up: Answer #1--*http://tinyurl.com/yjkav5v (scroll down to an entry by wildlifephotog *Pentax is ISO 10330:2002 compliant. That sets a 25 volt standard on the flash voltage. Answer #2--http://photo.net/pentax-camera-forum/00VZKf?start=20 (scroll down to an entry by Peter Zack) I took a couple old flashes to my local authorized Pentax repair shop. He's independent and services all brands. He emphatically said that with Pentax DSLR's the flash trigger circuits in the body are electronic. This is basically a computer http://photo.net/pentax-camera-forum/00VZKf?start=20# after all. Old camera bodies from the film era used mechanical contact points. Those old bodies could handle just about anything. On new bodies, the electrical circuits are designed for certain tolerances and may withstand moderate high trigger voltages for a time but will burn up after awhile. He said that the max trigger voltage should be 30 volts and you should *never * use a flash with more than 20 volt trigger voltage. Pentax flashes are all very low at around 4-6 volts. BTW, for anyone thinking of studio lights, AlienBees reports the sync voltage for their flash units is 6V. -p On 2/22/2010 11:54 AM, 27...@comcast.net wrote: Has anyone done any testing on the amount of voltage from a flash that either the K7 or the K20D can take..
