Bugger.

Sorry Rob. I was so keen to place my order that the possibility of a
bulk order didn't occur to me. Mind you, we had some friends over
yesterday and after several hours of sampling some excellent reds, I may
well have ordered 'A Photographic Guide to Crazy Cormorants'.

Re: The saga has concluded

Hey Boris,

Maybe nobody else cares, but I do! :-)

Glad you got it to work in the end. I'd take the shims of your hands,
but who knows what screen the K-8 is going to have or when it's going
to be released (or when I'm going to buy it, for that matter). Give
them to somebody who needs them now.

What I will accept is a few minutes with your K-7 + A 50mm f/1.2. I'd
like to know what it's like to shoot without feeling like I'm in a
focus lottery :-)

Cheers,

Hi!

I've the following items that I don't really need or use.

1. Pentax SMC FA-J 18-35/4-5.6 (very good sample) ($100)
2. D-BG2 (battery grip for K10D/K20D) ($100)
3. B+W MRC Circular Polarizer (Kaesemann, but not thin) filter in 58mm
variety. ($70)

If there is anything that you think you can enable yourself with, do
let me know off-list. I am open to offers as well. And of course if
you come to Chicago - I can bring it with me so that you can inspect
it, use it throughout duration of my visit and decide whether you want
to keep it. In this case naturally, you get to save on the shipping

Ken,

In what way(s) is the hard cover better? I assume the inside is the same,
right?

Subjectively, the image wrap has a more finished, permanent look/feel to it
compared to the soft cover, you know like the difference between a hard
cover book & a paperback.

Yes the contents are the same.

As an aside, Mark showed me the softcover version today, and it looks
GREAT. I thought last year's had a nice layout, but I prefer this
year's much more; Mark is clearly honing his book designing skills.
And everyone's photos look fantastic; I'm quite impressed with Blurb's
quality considering the book can be had for a little over 30 bucks.

I'll also note that they left off the CureSearch logo - which I
specifically sent to Sue Barton at her request - and all mention of
the CureSearch fundraiser, so we won't be able to get the NCCF mailing

Ken,

In what way(s) is the hard cover better? I assume the inside is the same, right?

As an aside, Mark showed me the softcover version today, and it looks
GREAT. I thought last year's had a nice layout, but I prefer this
year's much more; Mark is clearly honing his book designing skills.
And everyone's photos look fantastic; I'm quite impressed with Blurb's
quality considering the book can be had for a little over 30 bucks.

Who took the photo of the kid crawling inside the pipe? You get extra
honours! :-)

Jostein, I take my hat off to you. As I said to Mark and Lisa, it's

Adobe software has a history of being Very Uncomfortable outside of the
ASCII character set. This is not a fault of the PDF spec, but of the
folks implementing the software. (The most recent version of Acrobat
finally went to an internal Unicode representation and stopped mangling
Chinese, but there are still some ticks and foibles in there.)

I've produced PDFs in Thai, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese,
Turkish, Polish, Japanese, Hungarian, and fifteen other (mostly Western

Here's a good Adobe one. I created a document in Adobe (note that word)
Pagemaker. Later, it needed to be translated into Polish. Luckily, the
text was also in Word files, so I could send those to a friend for
translation. I reinsert the text into the Polish version of the
Pagemaker documents. Then they need to be converted to pdfs for various
reasons. I also need just the Polish text into pdf format, so I shove
the Word files through a converter. These act as software printers, if
you like. You tell the file to print and one of the printer choices is
the converter software, which writes the output to a new pdf file. No
problems with the Word files.

You can see where this is going, can't you?

OT - Enablement

2010-04-17 Thread Christian Skofteland
My new job has me traveling quite a bit. The last three weeks were spent in
Miami, Florida.
The next two weeks will be New York City and then I'll have a two week break
before spending
another two weeks in Paris.

With all this travel to interesting locations I decided to enable myself with a
new P&S camera.
After much deliberation I chose a Canon G11. I wish Pentax made a camera with
the features and controls of the G11, but they don't so I didn't choose a
Pentax...

The G11 is small enough to travel with but has a real optical viewfinder and
extensive controls so that it handles more like a "real" camera. I'd travel
with a KX because of it's small size and excellent image quality but the lenses
add bulk and make it less pocketable and easy to carry. My work involves 12
hour days in a datacenter with very little free time so I just wanted something
to have in a belt pouch and be ready for any photo ops that caome up.

Something else I like about the G11 is the exgtensive number of accessories
available including third-party underwater housings and strobe setups. Again
something that's never available for poor Pentax cameras.

I've only had it for one day but so far I'm happy with the control layout and
usage. As I shoot more I'll see how image quality holds up.

RE: Paris

2010-04-17 Thread Bob W
Thank you very much - I'm very flattered - and to everyone else who has
commented.

I love Paris - it's the city I know best after London although there is
still a lot more I want to understand. For instance, it was only while I was
there this week that I learned about les grisettes (hence the photo of the
statue!) and the significance of 1830.

Paris is as interesting as London for me, but I haven't spent enough time
there yet fully to shake off the photo cliches and find my own voice. I hope
to do so of course, but I'm no Juan Buhler, and photographers such as Atget,
Brassai, Kertesz, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson, Izis, Ronis, Erwitt and so on
are a hard act to follow!

RE: Ultra-wide zooms [Scanned][Spam score:8%]

2010-04-17 Thread John Whittingham
"As far as my very limited experience allows me to opine, people don't
like primes because they don't like changing lenses."

-- Graydon

I love primes, but use a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 for the wide end. I could have
bought a DA 14 f/2.8 but I'd be limited to 14mm. Now if all the primes covered
by the Sigma 10-20mm were available, which they're not I still wouldn't buy
them because I couldn't fir them in the kit bag! My standard kit consists of
the following:

Sigma EX 10-20 OR Pentax DA*16-50
Sigma AF 24/2.8
Pentax FA 28/2.8
Pentax FA 35/2
Pentax FA 50/1.4
Pentax DA 70/2.4 Limited
Tamron Di 90/2.8 Macro
Pentax FA 135/2.8

The DA 14/2.8 is roughly the size of the Sigma 10-20 and offers very little in
th way of extra IQ, it gains a faster aperture but looses flexibility in
spades. But I have to agrree with JC on this, a modern prime will beat a modern
zoom every time if made to the same standard. I have the DA*200/2.8 and DA
300/4 and they're just awesome!!!

I ordered hardcover, image wrap and that's proven to be very durable, so

The saga has concluded

2010-04-17 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

It appears that my Katz Eye screen on K-7 is now in perfect state of
tune. Having performed the testing procedure as described by Rachael
Katz and having submitted the results for her scrutiny I have been told
that there is nothing to improve. I've been shooting with my favorite A
50/1.2 for few days now and I hit the focus consistently.

All in all, I think it is the best service I've ever received in my
life. The whole story span across many months and Rachael was always
there offering her advise and help. And finally, the effort paid off...

I can probably never thank her enough nor praise her enough.

Boris-the-happy-bloke

P.S. If anyone needs Pentax K-7 shims of sizes 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 mm -
please let me know - I can either send them to you or bring them in
person to Chicago. They may prove useful.
