I don't remember what the issue was, but if you go here:

you can download the latest firmware version to install.

I'll miss the BG-3 grip and the remote shutter socket and the
weather/dust sealing, but am looking forward to the Sony Exmor sensor
and the excellent high ISO performance. I'm not sure if I'm going to
really like the "Stormtrooper" color scheme or not. If I were ordering
one new, I probably would have gone with Basic Black.

A couple of questions: The K200D and the K-x use the same focusing
screen size, correct? I got a Nikon screen for my K200D for help with
MF lenses and will switch that into the K-x assuming they are the same
size.

Secondly, I think I remember reading about SOME sort of problems with
some early K-x models. Was that addressed with a firmware update? What
checks should I put it through to make sure I don't have one with
those problems?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Re: PESO - Clementine Rainbow Round 2

2010-05-17 Thread John Sessoms
I think if it were my image I'd combine "Round 2" with the original as a
layer and apply a layer mask to confine the lightened area to the water
behind the dam and the one foreground tree on the lower right, leaving
the rest of the image as original.

The darkness of the rocks and the shadowed face makes the rainbow pop
out for me, but the lighter water works in the impoundment area.

From: Jack Davis

I think the original is more dramatic and concentrates the viewer's attention
on the falls.

Possible.

Lower Yosemite Falls produces them. Also Cumberland Falls State Resort
in Kentucky, Luna Island at Niagara Falls State Park and Waimea on
Hawaii's Big Island.

Info on-line says the color doesn't show up to the naked eye. The color
is too faint to activate the color cones so it just appears as a white
bow, but long exposures will reveal the colors.

No reason why mist from that spillway couldn't produce one if the
alignment was right.

According to Wikipedia, Durham, North Carolina is another "Famous
natural moonbow location". I grew up there and can't for the life of me
figure out where in Durham it would be?

Google doesn't help. Every hit that refers to Durham being a location to
observe moonbows refers back to the Wikipedia article sooner or later.

I'll have to look around a bit next time I head over there.

Every time I hear about intent I remember this piece of "Genius of
Photography" and the NY police crime scene shots. There was no intent
of making art, but this can be considered art nonetheless.

Re: PESO: Fence Dance

2010-05-17 Thread Bruce Dayton
I can certainly see where Jack is coming from. Unless you are going
to get seriously into wildlife, a 300-400 is about as long as you'll
want to deal with. About the only other thing I could think of for
Jack might be a fast enough 300 to allow a 1.4 converter. That is
what I have and use - 100-300/4, but then, I got it for shooting
sports mostly.

I don't think I would want to deal with the real big glass just yet.

I'd be surprised if anyone in this show would not be pleased to have the

In shows I have been in in NY all sales were completed at the end of

that's a thoughtful point, but i do believe there is art made with the
"intent" of having no intent, e.g. Zen calligraphy

Isn't that intent none the less?

that's a koan: if you meet your intent in the road, kill it

in many branches of buddhism, "egoless art" is considered a practice

i would perhaps treat "intent" in your definition of art as a reasonable

Re: PESO Tilted is the new level

2010-05-17 Thread eckinator
2010/5/17 eckinator :
>
> I'll post a few gear pics later today and add some explanations

Here you go now. My kit. A combination of eBay steals and I'm so happy
I finally get around to play with it extensively.

My biggest problem at this time is that framing and focus change every
time I adjust tilt, i.e. focal plane or shift, i.e. perspective
correction. Presently I have sitting on my ballhead/qr base one macro
rail which holds an L bracket with a panorama plate attached to it
which then holds the bellows. All parts are Novoflex Q quick release
so I can change the setup around as I proceed to learn. I came up with
the pano plate idea because as you can see my tripod has no center
column nor do the legs lock in every position so there is no easy on
the fly height adjustment. The combination of a rail running at an
angle with the pano plate, all parts moving also forwards and
backwards in their respective clamps, gives limited height adjustment
and at the same time lets me rotate the camera/bellows/lens assembly
to reframe after tilting.

One or actually the only weakness of the BalPro T/S is that the rear
standart doesn't move well on the carrier rail because it isn't gear
driven. Fine adjustment is simply not possibly so you have to move the
entire assembly instead and then refocus using the lens standart. My
main learning curve at this time is to observe and understand the
impact of adjustments on framing and focus. Focal plane adjustment is
pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Once back on a regular
paycheque I hope to get another rail for sideways adjustments which
would let me frame laterally without moving the tripod. Luckily that
stuff is all relatively light.

For this shot, the relatively extreme tilt angles meant I was grabbing
light close to the outer edge of the image circle of the Copal 0
diameter large format lens I was using; it has a 59° angle of view and
I was decentering by 27°. Also this means lighting falloff as the
bellows extends plus a little more for tilt. I find IQ amazing for
that and was very pleased with the viewfinder image. Focus
confirmation was only moderately helpful. I focused using my eyes and
the screen.

I have another Copal 0 lens board so I am hoping to pick up another
lens eventually. Reason: this lens lets me focus to infinity but at
that setting there is no room for tilt, only very limited shift. A
slightly longer lens would let me do that. When I picked up the
bellows, I also grabbed a Pentax 67 camera adaptor for it but got
outbid on the 67 lens board. Have yet to meet the free camera fairy
though before I can think of shooting medium format film...

Next step I'll try to find an adaptor plate that lets me put the rail
between tripod and balhead to see if that is any better for framing.
Also, the tripod has mount holes for flexible arms to which I can
attach items such as reflectors, flashes, plane indicators to get the
Scheimpflug adjustment done faster. The goal of it all is to be able
to do it faster. Once I can set it up quickly to where and what I
want, I can more easily try different angles etc. and learn how to use
the extra DOF in framing.

There is also an interesting option to be gained from inverting tilt
as well as axial roation of assembly planes vs. subject plane - you
can create a sharp wedge running across the subject at almost any
angle, I've yet to learn that but I have some pretty good instructions
=)

To elaborate, from Falconsafety.com (makers, I think, of the popular "Dust Off"
brand):

"The Dust-Off brand offers two types of products: General Use and Special
Application, while they function the same, the contents are different.

In the General Use Dusters, difluoroethane or 152a is the liquefied gas used as
the propellant for generating the pressurized cleaning blast. The product is
not flammable in accordance with flame extension tests outlined by the Consumer
Product Safety Commission, however, under certain extreme circumstances it can
be ignited.

In the Special Application Dusters, tetrafluoroethane or 134a is the liquefied
gas used as the propellant for generating the pressurized cleaning blast. This
product is 100% non-flammable and is used in sensitive environments like
laboratories where the blast may be dispensed near a Bunson burner."

Inside a can of "air" you can hear and feel a liquid It can't be
compressed liguid air see:

You would need something like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_cylinder

The stuff you force inside your camera is an aerosol. At best it's a
very pure aerosol, most likely it's not. Spray a little "air" on a
clean UV filter and most likely it's dirty after cleaning.

That's one of the reasons I stick almost completely to prime lenses when

the aerosols they emit, the tire smoke, ..., I figure there's just way
too much stuff out there for a zoom lens to pump in and out.

Oddly enough, I've never had problems with dust on the sensor, even

Was still reclining on the patio Chaise with K20 in hand. Mocking Birds are in

Hi Team,

It's been a big couple of weeks on this little mail list, there has
been a lot of posts that I'd have liked to reply to but unfortunately
I don't have that much spare time at the moment so I hope the
following serves to indicate my appreciation.

Yesterday I received my copy of the PDML Annual 2009, it's a hardcover
ImageWrap version, ordered 23 April, curiously shipped from Sweden
(Priority shipping option). I've just had a chance to cruise though it
in a more leisurely fashion and I really enjoyed the book and its
contents.

A big congratulations to all the image contributors, there are so many
great images to study and enjoy, huge thanks to Mark and the editorial
team for putting in the time and care. The book design and execution
is excellent and leaves little to be desired, the Blurb production
quality is also very good. Very satisfying in all.

The layout in the DANK-Haus gallery looked functional and attractive,
what a huge effort, thanks Christine and team. The live video feed
from the gallery was a terrific idea and provided the on-line
participants a little of the feel of the evening. Of course it would
have been great to have been there but the live chat became a fun
little alternate forum for sporadic camaraderie and jest. I enjoyed
Cotty's video production too, thanks again everyone involved.

Finally the almost overwhelming stream of post Chicago GESO's and
PESO's generated by the attendees during the evening at the gallery
and later were all great to see. Very sad to have personally missed
out on such a momentous PDML get together but very glad to have
available so many fine and entertaining images documenting the event.

I was there in spirit but would love to be there in person some day to
share time and space with some of the talented crew that makes the
PDML such an amazing little mail list, thanks Doug et al.! ;-)

Cheers,

photographing bright red, dayglo pink and orange

2010-05-17 Thread Larry Colen

I was asked to do some photo sessions at a party this weekend.
I tried to take care not to blow out the red channel when I was setting
the exposure, but when I looked at the photos in LR on my mac the reds
seemed somewhat orangey, and the dayglow pink and the dayglow orange had
lost a lot of their "pop" and their saturation.

Was this a case of my misreading the histogram, or the histogram being
based on JPEG and not RAW so it wasn't really showing the red channel
blowing out? In future situations, should I leave more headroom in the
exposure?

Interestingly, on my work PC, the red doesn't seem quite as orangey as
it did at home, but that may be because it's a 600 pixel wide version
rather than a 24" iMac display, different curves or something:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4613138036/sizes/o/in/set-72157623949690373/

In a related issue, I'd like to get a 23" or so vertical second display
for my iMac for working on images in "portrait" composition. Has anyone
recently gone through the research shopping for one?

Dave,
That's quite a lot of pictures!
Obviously, the girls love their horses.
And the horses had ears up in almost every shot.
I thought the horses showed best against the lighter colored foliage,
Otherwise their ears tended to disappear into the dark.
(more fill light in lightroom?)
The kid with his helmit on was a smile among the girls -
'Yes this is a guy thing and dangerous, I have to wear a helmit.'
Some of the horses by themselves were beautiful.
Your client should really like those shots.
They'll be great memories in the future.

eBay listing 120569383280 is a Zörk ST-Dehner set like I have except
my manual says f/45, 67 and 90 as opposed to 40/60/80 as stated there.
It is basically a screw-in hood for a 40.5 mm filter thread precision
machined to hold one of three pinhole disks. Diffraction effects
aren't quite the same as those of a fully stopped down lens (or past
f/16 anyway)

Ecke,

Please keep the aluminum mount bits, especially if you get dead Vivitar

There can be benefits to spatial oversampling (such as resistance to
aliasing, without needing a strong antialiasing filter). See for

Exactly. Back in the silver age, if you wanted more resolution in your
photos, you pretty much had to use bigger film, though you could get a
little bit more with slower film. That's why folks used MF and view
cameras.

Today, it's not so simple. Pixel densities on the sensors probably
aren't quite down to the wavelength of light, but I've read arguments
that a lot of them actually exceed the theoretical maximum possible for
a lens to resolve.

The high level design specification would be something like:
Design an interchangeable lens digital camera system that provides the
highest possible resolution for the money in five years, taking into
account the costs of lens design, assuming that sensor costs will
continue dropping at the current rate. What is the optimal sensor size
to design for?

I have the bad habit of thinking about the design of camera equipment
when I'm driving. For a mass market system, one would expect that the
engineers would figure out how much resolution is needed, and design the
system around that. Another option is to place the constraint on the
size of the sensor, and try to optimize there.

If we can assume that Moore's law is going to hold on sensors, for at
least a few more iterations, then for long term planning, sensor cost is
not going to be an issue, and it might be best to optimize system design
on the glass. Lens quality has improved over the years, but I'm
guessing that the improvement over time is more linear, or logarithmic
rather than the exponential improvement (2dB/year) of Moore's law.

The sharper a lens (lines per inch) the more expensive it is to produce.
Likewise the larger the sharp area of a lens, (24x36 sensor vs APS) the
more expensive it is to produce. There are also physical limitations to
the resolution, it can't get any better than the wavelength of light.

So, for ultimate system resolution, is there a sweet spot for lens
design where you get the best lines per inch times sensor area for the
least cost? Or is it simply a case that as far as glass is concerned,
it's always cheaper to get the same total resolution with a bigger
target area?
