The Bill Gottlieb photo collection at the Library of Congress
Hi all, Just recently I learned about another new treasure of photographs on line, which I'd like to share with you. It's the collection of Bill Gottlieb and it mainly deals with jazz photos from the late 1940s. Gottlieb was a writer and a photographer at the Downbeat (jazz) magazine and according to his wishes, his collection at the Library of Congress has now entered the public domain. This means that anyone can use them, except where rights of privacy and/or publicity may apply. (I haven't really been following the list, why I apologize if this already have been mentioned here.) Here is the start of his collection at LOC with thumbnails (at the beginning there are many clippings): http://tinyurl.com/32h8awz If you want to see or save any clippings, first click the item, then on the new page note the options to the left of the web page. This is where the collection of just photos start: http://tinyurl.com/39n58zo Note that you can enlarge the pictures on the screen up till 1024 pixels. But not only that - you can also save big size tiff versions! This is just great. :) Most of you will have seen at least one or another of his pictures on covers of jazz records and such, (mostly shot with a Speed Graphic btw). Here's a chance to see not only well known pictures but also a great load of previously unpublished ones. Being very interested in jazz and having played some, I find the collection immensly interesting and have already spent days at it. I learned about all this by chance at Flickr. Here's a link where the LOC has published a selection of Gottlieb's photos on Flickr: http://tinyurl.com/2fl2fmt This is the way every muséum, archive or other institutions holding picture collections should work. WHY does someone have to do it? Since you asked... Perhaps it is because they take being a follower of Jesus seriously: Jesus told his followers to “make disciples of people of all the nations,” and he set the example by “journeying from city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God.” The apostle Paul taught in public places, in the marketplace, and from house to house. We follow their example. Re: Caption Contest!
Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition is an American patriotic song written by Frank Loesser and published as sheet music in 1942. The song was a response to the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The phrase itself is traced to LT JG Howell Forgy, who was a chaplain aboard the USS New Orleans during the Japanese attack that Sunday morning in December, 1941. PESO - Monument
Last week my family was in Maryland at a reunion and visiting the DC area. One evening we did the walk around the monuments in DC. Here are two different views of the Washington Monument - one at dusk and the other at night. The vantage points are very different as well. Re: PESO - American Goldfinch
I've managed to have decent luck catching them. This is the best in-flight one I've gotten, and I've gotten a pretty decent one sitting in a tree. On this one, I used my old manual focus Asahi Takumar 135mm prime at 200 ISO for 1/2500 in aperture priority -- not sure what the f-stop was, but I'm guessing it was 2.5 considering how soft it is. http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/400117/#/photos/walt_gilbert/400117/lightbox/ I've had my best luck setting my focus on the feeder, waiting for the bird to land, leading the bird between its perched position and the feeder, adjusting the focus to a point between the bird and the feeder, and snapping as it passes through the frame, hand-held. Of course, I sit in a small recessed front porch about 15 feet from the feeder, which gives me just enough cover to avoid spooking them. I don't know if it would be practical for you to set up something like that -- maybe a small canopy of some sort -- but it does work for me. It does take practice -- catching birds in-flight has been my main focus since I got my K-x. But keep at it and I'm sure you'll start snapping them left and right. OT: Email client -- replying within threads
Hi all, I get my PDML emails in digest form -- usually about a dozen or so in one bulk email. Up until now, I've been using my web-based gmail interface to read and reply. Problem with that is that it doesn't allow me to reply directly to another list member when appropriate. So, when I reply to a message on a thread, it always looked in the thread tree like a reply to the originator of the thread rather than the person I was actually replying to. Now, I've finally downloaded Thunderbird and set it up as my gmail IMAP client. Now, I can reply directly to the individual in the thread, which is nice. Only problem with that is that when go about replying to the individual, it appears to only bring up that person's email in the address field, but not the pdml email address. So, as far as I can tell, I'd only be replying to the person and not the list. Since I'm not big on filling up everyone's inbox with any more mail than absolutely necessary, I'd like to avoid that if at all possible and still be able to reply to the individual in the thread tree. In short, how do I go about replying within a thread, directly to an individual without sending mail directly to their inbox, or having my message appear to be a reply to the originating list member? I hope I'm making sense here. Is anybody pickin' up what I'm puttin' down? Re: PESO - American Goldfinch
Thanks, Jack. When I took that shot, I was still getting used to the camera. I'd had it less than a month and was still trying to get a feel for exposure compensation and using it a lot. It was taken at 6:42 am on May 27 -- which would have put the sun just coming over the back of the house and hitting the lower branches of the tree at that moment. Looking at the EXIF, it shows I had the compensation at +0.7. That would certainly explain the blooming, I'd say. ;-) On 1:59 PM, Jack Davis wrote: A good catch, Walter. Re: OT RANT: Textbooks
The shitty thing is that many of these course books are written by the professor, or by a colleague, making the print runs relatively small. Few if any make it to the network of bookstores other than the campus, or near campus ones. No printing company is going to print a hundred thousand extra on spec for wide distribution. Because science and history are constantly being rewritten by the experts, most subjects are updated or rewritten every few years, causing yet another printing. It's unlikely that any given course-book in any given college is printed any more than 5000 at a time. As time has passed since the 60's when I was being schooled, incredible amounts of historically significant events and scientific discoveries have been made. Many more than in the preceding 50 years. The human population has grown by 50% since WW2. The choices in specialization in careers is vast compared to the 50's. When I majored in Nuclear Physics as a freshman for 1.5 trimesters in 1961, I don't think I paid more than $18.00 for my books. Turned out I was way too scholastically underprepared to be in that field. I guess discussing all about it with my Dad over dinner most nights doesn't count. He had home schooled himself from a BS in Zoology in 1933 to a Masters in Math Physics specializing in Nuclear Energy between 1953 and 1956. Good enough to be the US Representative at the ISO conferences at the Hague where they worked on and off for years to standardize working condition safety in everything from a dentists office X-ray, hospital usage, on to weapons production and power generation. I should have paid more attention to his Math studies instead of the dazzling Physics revelations that were happening then. I did get to meet some of the names in the business when we'd go into MIT which had a small reactor, and a toroidal particle accelerator with a cloud chamber in which one could observe (and photograph) the products of these early collisions. But I digress (as usual). Final point about textbooks. That is not to say a book that is superb in any given subject will not be reprinted for general collegiate distribution, or even globally, IF the demand for it is there. Not a lot of use if you're studying a field where the important books are recent -- say computer science or even quantum physics -- but probably great for English or history students.
