OT - arrested for appalling crime of dancing in public

2012-07-14 Thread Igor Roshchin

What's more offensive than drinking sugary soda in NYC? Dancing
gleefully while you wait for a train.
http://now.msn.com/couple-arrested-for-appalling-crime-of-dancing-in-public

I suspect that the key ingredient for the arrest was the camera...
;-)

Actually, that's written in the NY Post article:
We brought out the camera, and that.s when they called backup.

Looks like I am likely to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, for
work - in a week or so.

Curious - any safety concerns that I need to be aware of ?

I've never been to South Africa so I don't have pe4sonal experience,
but the Australian Government issues 'Travel Advisories' for visitors
to many countries. The advice for South Africa might help,
 especially
  the 'Safety and Security' tab.

  http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/South_Africa

Other governments probably issue similar advisories.

US Department of State also posts those:
 http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1008.html

In addition to those advisories, you may want to check if any
 immunization is needed. E.g.:
 http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/south-africa.htm

I haven't been there myself, so, I don't know anything beyond this.

I spent a few weeks in South Africa in 1998, so my experience may be out of
date. I stayed there for a few days with a friend who was getting married,
and her family who still lived there. The advice they gave to all their
guests coming in through Johannesburg airport was not to leave the terminal
building except with a pre-booked taxi driver, and not to go with one of the
taxi touts who cruised for business.

While driving me around JB my friend's father adviced me not to rest my arm
on the window - he said I'd have my hand cut off by people trying to get my
watch.

One of their sons was burgled at gunpoint in his home some months
afterwards, and it was generally considered a miracle that he wasn't shot
dead, which was apparently the routine at the time.

So the impression I got was that Jo'burg was not a good place to wander
around naively.

We also spent some time in Cape Town which was much more relaxed and one of
the world's great cities, although even there there was a double-shooting on
the Waterfront one day - we weren't affected by it in any way though.

I have no idea what it's like there now, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back
- it's a wonderful country. You should get some advice from locals.

Re: Travelling to South Africa ..

2012-07-14 Thread Patrick Nelson

As I live on the outskirts of Johannesburg I suppose I should comment.

As always in a large city there places to avoid and places that time of
day make a big difference. Things to consider are not leaving items in a
car in view, drive with windows closed and car locked to prevent smash
and grab thefts happening. As with anywhere avoid dark places at night
on your own. Transport from the airport I am not familier with as I live
15 minutes away and normally fetch visitors. Most people are either
fetched, hire a car or catch the gautrain (high speed rail link) if it
goes where you need to be. As you did not say where in Johannesburg you
are staying I can't get more specific.

Feel free to contact me off list for more info.

Depends on the state and city. I know in some Connecticut cities there
are anti vagrancy laws that require you to have at least a stated amount
of money on your person if you can''t supply a local address where
you're staying, though there's no requirement that you supply written
documentation, and the amount of money required is between two and five
dollars, which kind of tells you how old those statutes are. You aren't
even required to have your drivers license with you when driving, just
that you /have/ one. However federal law does require that aliens have
documentation on their person at all times.

All mammals can carry rabies even if they don't show symptoms. I'm
pretty sure squirrels show symptoms and die of it. Have you noticed
that a lot of people think that nature is a Disney movie? Actually
that's not fair, Disney movies show nature a lot closer to reality than

It's pretty much the same here. No obligation to carry and produce ID (unless
you're driving a car). However if you don't comply with a police request they
know how to make your life difficult.

While we do not live in a legal police state it can be frighteningly close to a
de facto police state.

My usual caveat applies insofar as the vast majority of cops are terrific
people doing an extremely difficult job. A very few bad apples can ruin it for
everyone.

K-5 is a bit cheaper in US, depending where you buy; there were a
bunch with warranty on eBay for $800 recently

i was consider the comparison and found the choice isn't simple — it
comes down to one's personal weighting of several factors

the factors i focused on:

K30: lighter, improves AF, has focus-peaking, can use AA batteries,
and has some better video capabilities

K-5: more dynamic range, better battery life, a top display panel, a
quieter shutter, DOF-preview at the shutter button, slightly faster
film advance, HDMI output, a stronger body, and a better dust removing
sensor shake

there are a few other differences, and it really depends what matters
more to you; i weighted it for my own preferences and it came more
than 2-1 in favor of K-5 without considering price

According to what I can find on the internet, that might be almost true.
The risk of getting rabies from being bitten by a squirrel is rather low.

A squirrel that gets bitten by another rabid animal is most likely going
to die from being eaten before it can incubate the virus.

OTOH ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2003-12-20-squirrel_x.htm

Opossums don't get rabies. It has something to do with their body
temperature not being high enough to sustain the virus. That's what the
animal control officer told me when she came to retrieve the one I
caught in my kitchen a couple of years back.

Re: A photographer whose work is Blowing Me Away...

2012-07-14 Thread P. J. Alling
The individual links don't work in Firefox but I was able to visit her
galleries. They're good but then the images get old, unfortunately
quite quickly, for me at least. The few hyper realistic images were
better than the dreamy impressionistic stuff, but I doubt that the woman
in the People gallery thanked her.

On 7/11/2012 12:01 PM, Darren Addy wrote:

Greetings PDMLers,
I just discovered a photographer on 1x.com that is absolutely Blowing
Me Away. I am impressed and inspired by her work, on multiple levels:
Ursula I Abresch

First, I love her ability to create amazingly striking images from
ordinary objects. A few examples:
Chalk: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/3885/8896/
Drinking straws: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2036/8896/
Rust: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2048/8896/
A fork: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2010/8896/
The ability to see and compose outstanding images in the face of the
ordinary is one of the things that I feel I need to develop *most*
in myself.

What follows may not be everyone's cup o' tea but I *love* it. There
are very few of these sort of images that I would not like to have as
*large* prints on my walls. If you do not care for abstracts or the
work of The Impressionists, go no further.

I'm very taken by her motion blur work, either as an individual technique:
Aspens at Night: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14880/8896/
Spring Aspen II: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14707/8896/
Jerrylandia: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14227/8896/

But I'm especially turned on by her *combination* of blending blur/OOF
with straight shots:
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14709/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14881/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14883/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14533/8896/
This is the result of (I have to believe) a mostly post-processing
technique (two or more layers?), and I'm not sure if her blurred shots
are taken in camera or done from sharp images in Photoshop but just
seeing thos images, and guessing at how they were done, I've got a
bunch of ideas that I'm itching to try.

You can get lost in her portfolio which shows off her very broad
range: http://ursula.1x.com/gallery/8896 including more straight
photography.
I hope you find viewing her work as pleasurable and edifying an
experience as I am.

I don't claim to understand this stuff, but I don't think anyone claims

According to what I can find on the internet, that might be almost
true. The risk of getting rabies from being bitten by a squirrel is
rather low.

A squirrel that gets bitten by another rabid animal is most likely
going to die from being eaten before it can incubate the virus.

Animals with Rabies don't eat, they bite to spread Rabies. Although a

OTOH ... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2003-12-20-squirrel_x.htm

Opossums don't get rabies. It has something to do with their body

the animal control officer told me when she came to retrieve the one I
caught in my kitchen a couple of years back.

England 2012--Deptford St. Market

2012-07-14 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

What a wonderful trip Darrel and I had this past June, and I think the 8 nicest
people in all of the UK are, in fact, our UK PDMLers and their family members.

As to the trip, Darrel and I flew into Heathrow and stayed in London for 2
days, then took the boat to Greenwich to visit with Bob W. over the weekend.
He is a well informed and wonderfully fun tour guide, and at one point I told
him he could probably do this for a living. He's that good. We tramped around
Greenwich and Deptford and had a blast--taking pictures all the way. Cotty and
Alma joined us for dinner on Saturday night and as all of you can well imagine,
Cotty's wonderful sense of humor and charm kept us all in good humor and
laughter. It was a great night, and I shan't ever forget it!

From Greenwich, Darrel and I caught the train to Cambridge and tramped around
the colleges, did the tour of King's College Chapel, and just walked and
walked, and drank ale, and relaxed.

Then it was by bus to Milton Keynes to visit with Chris Mitchell and his wife
Karin. What a fantastic time we had visiting and seeing the sights there. The
Grand Juncture Canal was fantastic and the four of us visited some sites from
the UK's National Trust program, which is just fantastic. Very impressive.
Darrel and I had such a blast visiting with the Mitchells. Chris sang, and
he's fantastic.

Then the four of us, Darrel I and the Mitchells drove to Newcastle area to
meet up with Bob W., Mike Wilson, his wife Cath, and their daughter Katy. The
area here is absolutely beautiful, and Mike Wilson planned an itinerary that
was just fantastic. I think we'd all agree the high point was when we crossed
the dunes and found ourselves on Holy Island. Wow! Wait till you see
everyone's pictures from here, and the other sites visited. They're really fun!

From Newcastle we all said good-by, and Darrel I headed back south to catch
a flight out of Heathrow.

We traveled for 12 days, every two days on the move. As I've already said to
our UK PDMLers, Darrel and I found kindness, generosity, humor, and friendship
in abundance, and we're very grateful. We send xxoo across the pond.

When in the Greenwich area, Bob W. took us to the Deptford St. Market. Here's
a little gallery from that leg of the trip. Bob will post his gallery. His
gallery is much better, but here's a little taste of the market--wonderfully
multicultural!

Re: PESO -- The Little Black Dress

2012-07-14 Thread Derby Chang

Very nice open shade.

Interesting to see the dress in the window too. I've noticed a lot of
this season's fashions in the stores are in ultramarine green
(http://www.stylelist.com/2012/03/01/pantone-ultramarine-green_n_1311410.html),
but very few ladies are actually wearing it on the street. Hard shade to
work with, depending on your complexion I suppose.

Re: OT GESO - Oly 12mm

2012-07-14 Thread Derby Chang

Thanks Christine,

Still liking the combo very much, and shot some more this weekend. Two
little niggles I don't like so much. The battery life is, in Cotty's
immortal words, a piece of poo. I had three batteries with me, and still
ran out mid afternoon, putting an end to the proceedings. And I miss the
Pentax green button. With the OM-D in Program, program shift is easy
enough with one of the top dials. But to get it back to the program
line, you have to turn the dial until the Ps becomes P. Other than that,
it is a well thought out camera.
