Re: Bought new monitor - have questions
I found factory calibration good enough. I'm using two U2410, one at home and other at work. Both running on Linux. I should try to play with color profiles some time... maybe. This model is rather old, but still the best in this price range. Aspect ratio and input sources, etc etc... I always feel calibrating with a tool is probably the best way to go because you have control over the results. At least if you use good color management system software. Most monitors cover sRGB fairly well but struggle with Adobe RGB. The monitor was probably designed for sRGB since it is mostly standard, so I would stick with that. Yes, both Pentax F*250-600/5.6 and FA*250-600/5.6 are f/5.6 across the range and with autofocus. They are both expensive and difficult to get hold of, but I got one probably because of the missing tripod mount. After receiving it and checking condition, I started out with FreeCAD to make a drawing of the mount. I have never used a CAD program before and struggled a little bit in the beginning. But after three long evenings, it was finished. I sent the drawing file to Shapeways and got a plastic mount two weeks later. The plastic mount is solid enough to test it on a tripod and after some small adjustments on the drawing, I sent the files to a company who will make it of aluminum. If you do want to try one of the factory profiles, Adobe RGB is a wider color space. You might want to see how well it matches your printer output. If you're only posting photos on the web or viewing on screen, sRGB might be the best choice. But if you're serious about good printer output, I would upgrade to Spyder4 or another current calibration tool that measures ambient light and then recalibrate, you can always switch back to the factory calibration. Since calibration doesn't hold forever, I suspect the factory setting will eventually wander off mark. Paul Thanks. Excellent pics. Great to see two shots of my alma mater, the U of C. Wonderful view of the Midway through the Logan Center window. That building didn't exist in my day, nor did Mansuetto Library. Nice work on the mount. If you plan to use the lens on a gimbal tripod mount, be sure the leg on the lens mount is long enough to achieve balance. -Original Message- From: SV Hovland pdml...@heime.org Subject: RE: Soccer Yes, both Pentax F*250-600/5.6 and FA*250-600/5.6 are f/5.6 across the range and with autofocus. I am promised to have this in the week or two. I love fiction with a historic angle, especially when its set in a place with which I'm familiar. The remnants of the White City amusement park were still on 63rd street when I was a little boy. I remember my mother pointing it out when we would ride the 63rd street bus from Stony to Halsted, where she would shop at Wieboldts. That would have been 1953. I grew up on the southside and was one of a handful of commuter students at U of C when I started grad school in 1971. I got married during my second semester and moved to the Flamingo building on South Shore Drive. (At the time, student housing was scarce, and the somewhat pricey Flamingo was all we could find, mid term.) I grew very fond of Hyde Park and the University. I have a book called One in Spirit that tells the story of the University and includes many gray old photos. I first read the book a few years after graduation when my wife and I were living in Morgan Park on the far southwest side of the city. Upon reading the book I discovered that the house next door had been the site of a meeting between Rockefeller and Thomas Goodspeed in regard to the establishment of the University. I shot the house on 4x5 and made a print for the U of C archives. Fun stuff. Would love to see more of your photos. RE: Cruise: model release?
We just returned from a 90 day cruise, never once used a model release. Off the ship I asked permission to photograph, particularly in Muslim countries such as Indonesia, Egypt and Tunisia. For general crowd shots no big deal. On the ship I didn't ask because they asked me to take the photo, e.g. the knitting group. In Tangier is the only place I really noticed women hiding their faces, expecting tourists to photo them. Which is why I always ask first when doing a shot of a single person/ close-ups. There was a professional photographer passenger as well, didn't see any model releases there either. Re: PESO - Goodspeed House, Chicago
Thanks Christine. Yes, the house is still there, and it now has a historic landmark sign. Last time I was in the neighborhood, perhaps two years ago, it had been painted a different color. Photo Annual 2013 update
We're later than I would like but at least on target to have hard copy in hand by GFM. Probably earlier. Things have been slowed a little by my class work and by my own book project, but I've been working solidly on The Annual for the past few days and it's coming together. Things haven't been helped by a hard rive failure two days ago but it's by backup drive so nothing was lost. Only a second hard drive failure would do that! (I have two new drives on the way.) Photos were prepped as they came in (spreading the work out a lot and saving much stress in the long run). Photo selection was finished some time ago by the editorial staff. I've got the overall book design, fonts and layout set and the various section divider pages done. It's really just a matter of loading the photos into the pages. Oh yeah, Doug still has to write the foreword and I still have to write the Global Health Initiative page. No biggie(s). Re: Cruise: model release?
Read your ticket contract and the cruise-line's policies and procedures. For my recent cruise, buried away in the contract sections nobody bothers to read, was a prohibition against on-board photography for commercial purposes [they don't want competition with their paid/contracted staff photographers] and an open invitation to snap away to your heart's content for your own personal use. [People sharing photos of their cruise is good word-of-mouth free advertising for the cruise lines.] So, if you whip out a model release, you will be suspected of doing commercial photography and they could do anything from giving you a stern lecture to confiscating your camera for the duration to throwing you off the ship at the next port. I would guess the chances are pretty slim that anybody would notice or care, but why take the chance. stan On Apr 23, 2013, at 12:30 PM, Aahz Maruch wrote: For my upcoming cruise, I expect that I won't be focusing on people much, but I'm wondering whether I should still be prepared with a model release just in case. RE: PESO: Filter used and a question
I am not the purest on the list. Dave Brooks is. However, you correctly anticipate my reaction to your filtered cartoon tulips. If Celine Dion were a photograph, that would be her. And really, that's an apt analogy, I think. Literally millions of people like her music. Me, not so much. But who am I to say they're wrong? As for your filtered foto, not to my taste, I am afraid. There are some beautiful photos in the gallery, I must say. The one with the yellow tulips stands out for me. Thanks Mark and perhaps I should have stated a digital filter. On 4/23/2013 8:06 PM, Mark C wrote: When I hear filter I think of a piece of glass that screws onto the front of a lens... Re: PESO - Louvre Late Afternoon
Nice. Like the lighting, puts the focus on the people at the bottom and makes a nice contrast between the size of the people and the building. Like it quite a bit.
