SSD benchmark

2013-08-31 Thread Larry Colen
I just finished putting an SSD and more memory in my macbook.

I did a very rough, informal benchmark.

So, my two photo systems are:
24 iMac, 2.4Ghz core 2 duo, 6GB ram, catalog on internal spinny drive,
raw files on network mounted drive, via gigabit ethernet (much faster than
the USB 2 setup)
13 macbook, 2.2GHz core 2 duo, 6GB ram, catalog and files on SSD drive.

11 freshly imported files, processed to 1:1 previews
macbook 1:27 - 87sec
imac1:54 - 114sec

So, the two systems are very similar except for storage, the iMac has
about a 10% faster processor, even so, heavy processing of files was about
30% faster.

Catalog intensive actions like backing up a catalog, seem a lot faster
on the macbook.

I haven't compared processing the same files mounted on the network drive.

At four times the screen area, the iMac is a lot easier to work on though.

LANTERNS - Traditional

2013-08-31 Thread Bipin Gupta
Quote Mr. P.J. Alling: I like the image but it looks a bit over sharpened.
I did use Unsharp Mask in PS CS5 - Amount 295, Radius 0.3, Threshold 0.
Taken with the K20D + the older Sigma 10-20 EX DC.
I think the Sharpness setting in-camera on Bright mode was already very
high. Probably over sharpened I agree.
I compared it with the original shot and find the sheen + gem like look on the
colored glass very magical on the sharpened photo.
Many thanks to all for taking a look and the feed back.

PESO -- Ikea's Billboard

2013-08-31 Thread P.J. Alling
A detail of the Armstrong Tire/Pirreli building in New Haven. A
building that could best be described as a whimsical building of the
brutalist school. Ikea, it's current owner would gladly tear it down,
to gain a few more parking spaces, but ironically the very institutions,
historical preservation societies, designed to protect against concrete
monstrosities burying the beauties of the past, are now protecting the
concrete monstrosities. True, this building isn't as horrific as Boston
City Hall, but then what is. The building stands vacant, and
occasionally Ikea will hang a gigantic banner off the side facing the
highway. All that being said, I kind of like it.

Put an SSD in your iMac. You won't regret it.

Yeah. I'm definitely going to end up with an SSD in my main photo
processing machine. The question is whether that'll be my current
iMac (which is a pain to open up) or some other machine, because with
this one, I can't upgrade OSX, and without a newer OSX I can't upgrade
Lightroom.

So, if I decide for a newer box, where do I get the most bang for my buck?

Or, if I keep the iMac, do I replace the flakey DVD with another DVD, or
with a 4TB spinny drive?

in any case, I think finances will dictate waiting a couple of weeks.

Re: SSD benchmark

2013-08-31 Thread Bruce Walker
Larry, are you absolutely sure it can't be upgraded? Your specs 24
iMac, 2.4Ghz core 2 duo, 6GB ram sound _exactly_ like mine (except
mine's a 20) and I'm happily running 10.8.4. The key thing is you
need at least a Core 2 CPU.

To open it up you need two small suction cups (dollar store) and a
couple of Torx drivers (T8, T6). And about 3 hours spare. :-) You also
need a way to attach the HDD externally later after you install the OS
and need to copy your old account and apps back into the SSD. That
copy will run overnight (at least 8 hours).

Re: SSD benchmark

2013-08-31 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The key is what cpu the iMac has. Intel Core Duo cpus can't run 64bit OS X,
where Core 2 Duos can.

That said, since even older Macs have good resale value if they are in decent
shape, swapping it out for a newer system is often a big win for photo and
video editing. I changed my Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro 13 for a Mac mini
with i7 quad-core 2.6Ghz ... the difference in rendering speed is pretty
astonishing.

Personally, I prefer to have a separate display and cpu unit. The Apple
Thunderbolt 27 display and Mac mini are a dynamite pair. I have 16G ram with
the 2.6Ghz in the mini, currently running a spinny 1T internal drive. I'll
replace the internal drive with an SSD of similar capacity ... I'm just hoping
the price will get down to $600 or so by the end of the year. Right now, it
seems a little stuck at just over $1000.

Re: Question for K-5 / K-7 Owners

2013-08-31 Thread Rob Studdert
Honestly if you are constantly around shooters with the top end Canon
and Nikon bodies it's not difficult to realise the shortcomings of the
Pentax system currently, and I'm including the 645D as I'm also around
new Blads. There's nothing stopping you from enjoying your K5, it's a
great camera for a huge number of owners I'm sure but it certainly
does have limitations for those of us who want a more capable body to
support their lenses and enable them to explore more demanding
subjects and photographic situations. Unfortunately as has been seen
here and on other Pentax related forums many such photographers have
migrated to other systems as their finances allowed, me I just have to
wait until Pentax raises their own bar.

The dust removal is on the K5 is ultrasonic not the old ram the sensor
into a stop method. My issue is with a significant amount of noise
being generated by the body whenever the sensor is supposed to be
effectively locked in place such as during long exposures or whilst in
sensor clean mode.

On 27 August 2013 14:54, Bipin Gupta bip...@gmail.com wrote:
I am told dust removal on the K-5 is based on ultrasonics.
Hence one can't hear any perceptible noise not even a gentle purr
 like on my K20D.
I have put the body to my ears a number of times. I can't even feel a
 vibration as with my K20D.
At first this worried me, as I was not sure if the dust removal menu
 was working at all.
I bought my K-5 with the 18-135 WR Lens in late January 2013 from
Henrys of Toronto for CAD 1108. I have checked that it was the Ricoh
manufactured model with a shutter count of (1) from the first photo I took.
My K-5 is awesome, as the combo takes great photos - almost two times
the sharpness, color and contrast of the AL II Kit Lens.
Hope we now have some happy K-5 Users out there or do I need to be
 unhappy?
 Regards.
 Bipin.

Hope we now have some happy K-5 Users out there or do I need to be
 unhappy?
 Regards.
 Bipin.

I've got three recent sigma pro-zooms in my kit that I work pretty
hard, generally 1000+ exposures per session and they have been
flawless, the only lens that I currently have out of action is a

very useful when lighting is bad (which is mostly the case).

With all due respect, and understanding that you're totally entitled to

17-70/2.8-4.5). They're good enough for me so much that I've sold DA*

any more Pentax zoom lenses as my needs are covered by Sigmas. Should
one of them fail, I would try to find another one such lens as a

Free L brackets, *ist D and K10/20

2013-08-31 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

Last offer, custom Savage/Studdert made anodised aluminium L brackets
with Manfrotto QR plates ready to go for the *ist D and K10/20, they
allow a quick transition from vertical to horizontal orientation and
keep the lens centred over the tripods centre. One 200PL-14 QR Plate
is permanently fixed to the unit (included) and a second is screwed to
the bracket over the anti-rotation/locating pins as required

Shipping only, *istD bracket weighs 325g, the other weighs in at 335g.
The cost to ship either to the US would be in the order of AU$13.70 or
approx US$12.19, Paypal with the sender accepting fees would make for
a quick and easy transaction.
