PESO 2014 - a birthday card - GDG

2014-02-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
A friend's birthday was yesterday, and she's the one who started a tradition of
a bunch of us who get together every Thursday morning at 7:30 for coffee and
breakfast. I made this little triptych for her as a card …

Depends on how close the macro is.
The D FA100/2.8 is a good macro choice. It's a little long on the APS-C
format, but the 50 is on the short side (YMMV), and I would prefer to
err on the side of more working distance than less.
In the Pentax line up, good macro lenses to avoid are the early FREE
designation ones. Which is too bad, because they really are excellent
lenses. Unfortunately they hot spot fairly easily.

Back to the K3--I love it. If I'm not using 100% of the time it is
because along with it I got a Leica M9 to replace my M8, and I'm in
love with that too. Amazing what you get when you wait a few years to

I thought it would be a DA* lens, but you might be right, and it would
be just a * (star) lens.

I would be also interested in something that looks like 16(17?)-85,
especially if it is f/4 or faster.

With macro, as in regular photography, focal length affects the following
things:

1) working distance. If you don't have room to move further back, you
need a shorter lense. If you can't, or don't want to, get closer, you
need a longer lens.

2) How much of the background is visible (at a specific magnification).
A shorter lens will have a wider field of view, and will show more of the
background. So, if you are taking a picture of a flower in your yard,
and want to show the yard in the back of the frame (albeit out of focus)
you will want the shorter lens. If, however, you want to isolate the
subject from the surroundings, or only have a smaller backdrop, then you
want to shoot from further away with a longer lens.

Note, that this also holds true with portaiture.

Re: Which Macro Lens?

2014-02-06 Thread Mark C
I have both of those lenses. Working distance on the 50mm is pretty
tight if you want magnification at 1:1 or so. The 100 mm gives you a
lot more room.

I bought my 50 for use in extreme macro situations - reverse mounted on
extension tubes or bellows. You can easily get to 4x to even 10x
magnification without getting too out of hand with the extension when
reverse mounted. The smaller 50mm lens is also easier to use on
extension - less wegiht, less awkward. As a general purpose lens 50mm is
also a very useful. For bugs and even a lot of botanical work the short
working distance of a 50 can be a problem - it gets harder to control
lighting (especially flash), harder to not get a shadow on the subject
and (for bugs etc) harder to not scare the subject away.

I use the 100mm far more. Much better working distance which addresses
the issues noted above. The narrower angle of view makes it easier to
control the background as well. When I run into larger subjects where I
cannot use the A* 200mm macro (my main workhorse) because the working
distance is too great, I will drop down to the 100mm. It is very rare
that I have needed to go to the 50, though in a few cases it happens. I
use the DFA 100 far more than the 50.

I believe that some tests show the 50 as sharper than the 100. I've not
compared my two lenses - I use them for very different subjects. The DFA
100 is excellent stopped down a but is a little softer wide open, IMO.

DOF should be the same at any given magnification and F stop, so at 1:1
there would be no difference. But - it is a lot easier to shoot at 1:1
with the 100, because you are not right on top of the subject.

What applications would the 50mm be best for?

What applications would the 100mm be best for?

Does either of them have a reputation for being noticeably sharper

Would the 100mm exacerbate the already shallow depth of field inherent
in macro photography, in other words, would the 50mm have greater
depth of field at 1:1 magnification?

Thanks, for any suggestions!

yes, and you can also run them side by side; note that you may have hoops to

the harder it may be (but the situation is relatively benign for Photoshop vs

The 100mm is best for smaller items like coins, stamps, insects, etc.
The 50mm is best for larger items like whole flowers, groups of flowers,

Don't answer that. I know the answer.

That's one question. The other one that I *DO* want answered is:

What happens to the version of Photoshop CS6 I already paid $400 for
the upgrade?

Well, it's yours to keep. The only issues are whether it continues to
run on any future operating system you install and whether Adobe
continues to update Camera Raw to support future cameras (which seems
unlikely). However, it would probably continue to open DNG files from
future cameras.

If I sign up for PhotoshopCC and Adobe decides to raise the monthly fee
enough to price me out of the market will I still be able to go back to

Re: OT: Problem with G5 PowerMac

Get a cheap USB housing for a SATA drive & use it as external storage.

Something like:

Install a copy of MacDrive on the PC & you probably wouldn't even have

happy camper. I didn't even have to upgrade the OS - it's all
running happily under Windows ME(!).

So my current plan is to sell the G5 for parts... after I come up

Thanks. Actually everything is fine. I've just moved the mail hosting from the
previous provider to outlook, using my web-options domain, and was just
testing that the transfer worked ok. At one point I thought I'd lost my main

There was nothing wrong with the previous host, but moving it all onto outlook
gives me a lot of benefits now that I'm using office 365 rather than 2003.
