Re: ONE FOR THE COMPUTER BOFFINS

OK Guys. Thanks for all the help. It looks like the import function just
doesn't work but I've found a work around. Using EXIF Pilot I simply add an
extra tab (Lens Type) and the lens data.

Alan,

Eric has already referred you to the exiftool (and lenstagger if you
have LR), and that's what I was going to suggest.

However, here is one additional thought triggered by this description:
Using an EXIF editor I can add a lens info tab + the lens name manually &
then Flickr finds it but it still doesn't put it into the Elements so the
Windows EXIF is not the same as the Elements EXIF.

Based on this (assuming that you are writing EXIF information correctly,
and in the correct field), - I am suspecting that you've already tried
what ExifTool does, and that route is not working for you.

But I see some possible confusion(s) and possibilities here.
 1. You said that you are working with JPEG files, and then you mention
"The lens ID is there but not the lens info because it obviously is not in
the Camera Raw look up file." Camera Raw shouldn't play any role if you
are working with a JPG in Elements. Am I missing something?

 2. Now, in case you are talking about a RAW file: I am not sure how the
combination of Elements & ACR behaves, but based on what you are
describing, I might guess that it might be just ignoring the Lens Info
field, only relying on the lens ID and the lookup of that.
Typically, (at least that's how it has been for Pentax lenses circa
2-3 years ago when I researched it), lens name is NOT in the Exif. Rather,
programs (including the one on Flickr's website) interpret the lens ID.
This lens ID tag is in the area of Exif called "Maker note".
Now, as far as I know, the tags reserverd by Pentax in that area do not
have the information for the lens name. So, when you are saying you are
adding "a lens info tab + the lens name manually", -
which portion of Exif is it going to?
There are various areas of the metadata that you might be righting to.
And PE might not be looking for the lens info in the area where you are
writing. Flickr might be smart enough to scan the entire metadata for the
tags.

Also, mind that there is a difference between IPTC metadata standard and
XMP standard, and there could've been different standards in different
years (IPTC just got updated in 2014).
I am too lazy to get into the details and how that may affect your case.
I might just speculate that if you are writing something with a modern
software (ExifTool) in the area that didn't exist in the specs of the time
of your PE version, PE doesn't read it.
In case you want to read up on that yourself:

Igor

original.

I am doing this to try & find a way of getting the HD 55-300 lens info
into the EXIF. The lens ID is there but not the lens info because it
obviously is not in the Camera Raw look up file. I could upgrade to
Elements 13 for $100 but to me that is a waste of money.

Using an EXIF editor I can add a lens info tab + the lens name manually
& then Flickr finds it but it still doesn't put it into the Elements so
the Windows EXIF is not the same as the Elements EXIF.

How hard would it be to edit the Camera Raw lens table and associate that
lens ID with the HD 55-300?

I felt the scene needed more than the few blossoms and twigs. I decided that
allowing

I seriously respect your opinion, Ann, and wanted you to know that the problems

2015-02-19 Thread John

The butterfly is cool.

I'm not in that big a hurry for winter to end. For me, it just means I
got to cut the "grass" again (over & over again).

We got some "snow" around here this week. Monday we got about an inch
before it turned into a mixture of sleet & freezing rain. Woke up
Tuesday morning to ICE; big pain in the patootie because I HAVE TO
shovel it off so the mail person won't slip on it and sue me. Lowes was
all out of road salt.

Just about the time I got it finished we started getting flurries again.

I expect that's winter's last gasp around here. The only reason I
mention it is the next street over from mine is a main thoroughfare &
they've got it closed to replace sewer lines. The detour runs down my
block. For the first time since I moved here 40 years ago the city sent
out the scraper truck to remove the snow from my street.

Note: "grass" in quotes because it's not grass. It's some kind of green
weeds.

But as long as it keeps the dirt covered I don't have to deal with the
neighborhood infestation of yuppie scum house flippers complaining to
the city about it & causing me grief.

I am doing this to try & find a way of getting the HD 55-300 lens info

obviously is not in the Camera Raw look up file. I could upgrade to
Elements 13 for $100 but to me that is a waste of money.

Using an EXIF editor I can add a lens info tab + the lens name manually

the Windows EXIF is not the same as the Elements EXIF.

How hard would it be to edit the Camera Raw lens table and associate that
lens ID with the HD 55-300?

Re: ONE FOR THE COMPUTER BOFFINS

2015-02-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Alan,

Eric has already referred you to the exiftool (and lenstagger if you
have LR), and that's what I was going to suggest.

However, here is one additional thought triggered by this description:
Using an EXIF editor I can add a lens info tab + the lens name manually
& then Flickr finds it but it still doesn't put it into the Elements so
the Windows EXIF is not the same as the Elements EXIF.

PESO -- Let's do lunch.

2015-02-19 Thread P.J. Alling
Another inch of snow last night, I'm officially tired of winter. So
here's a shot from last Fall's Monarch migration. I missed focus by a
bit, not that big a bit but. There was one in this sequence with the
butterfly in perfect focus, and in a slightly better pose, but also
partially hidden by the plant, there was a bit of wind blowing the
subject around that day IIRC.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Surely the right way to add this kind of info is LensTagger (if you
use Lightroom) or ExifTool (if you don't.)
(Note that LensTagger requires ExifTool to be installed first.)

Quoting Alan C :

That's exactly what I did. (Except I opened JPEG's). I tried MS Word
& WordPad as the text editors & saved as a text. The files are
correct as edited & saved as .xmp's but, no dice, I can't import &
overwrite the original.

That's interesting. As far as I can determine, Photoshop wont export
an xmp from jpg (or dng) files so I can't test that.

I am doing this to try & find a way of getting the HD 55-300 lens
info into the EXIF. The lens ID is there but not the lens info
because it obviously is not in the Camera Raw look up file. I could
upgrade to Elements 13 for $100 but to me that is a waste of money.

Using an EXIF editor I can add a lens info tab + the lens name
manually & then Flickr finds it but it still doesn't put it into the
Elements so the Windows EXIF is not the same as the Elements EXIF.

In Elements 10, I can EXPORT an .xmp sidecar file & edit it with,
say, MSWORD. However, I then cannot get the edited file to
overwrite the original. The IMPORT function doesn't seem to work.
If I Re-EXPORT the original, the edited version is overwritten &
the edits are lost. Any ideas?

I don't have Elements but the problem sounded intriguing so I tried
something similar in Photoshop CC. As both programs use Adobe Camera
Raw to import raw files (albeit, different versions) I would have
expected similar behaviour.

I opened a PEF in CC and exported an xmp sidecar file. I then opened
the xmp in a text editor, changed the contrast setting to something
stupid (+100) and saved the edited file.

Back in CC, I used the 'Load Settings' dialogue (I assume this is the
same as your 'Import Function') to load the edited xmp. The contrast
in the image immediately changed to +100.

I tried the same process in Photoshop CS3 with the same result.

So it seems in Photoshop at least, loading an edited xmp file does
reflect the changes made outside of Photoshop. Why Elements behaves
differently, I really don't know unless, as Igor mentioned, you used
MS Word in a non text editor mode. That certainly doesn't work.
