That's why depth of field increases when you go to a smaller sensor; it's because you generally want to keep the exposure variables (shutter speed and f stop) around the same, and using a smaller camera system means that you can use a physically smaller lens aperture. This reduces the size of the circle of confusion (and thus allows for parts of the subject that are further away from the plane of true focus to still yield images which are perceived as being acceptably within focus; this is another way of saying that the depth of field is increased). -- I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying. -- Woody Allen -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT - Anyone with experience with hiking poles?
I'll chime in too... in the early 2000s, when I was in my mid-20s, I did a pretty long and rocky hike by myself (Brown Mountain in the Angeles National Forest). I was in good health and never had any trouble with my joints. I used a pair of REI anti-shock trekking poles (made by Leki, I think) which I still have. Shortly after starting the return back to the car, I lost my footing and twisted my ankle. The poles absorbed the majority of the shock, but I still had a lot of difficulty hiking back out, and was sore for days. Without the poles, I might have been in very bad shape in terms of getting back to the car. I didn't see anybody else on the trail that day. That said, my poles do not attach to a camera, and I find them cumbersome to have around when I'm trying to use a camera or binoculars. I don't use them that much anymore (the trails I do now are not quite as rugged). But if you have any concerns about stability, I think they can be extremely worthwhile. Re: OT - Anyone with experience with hiking poles?
Brian, Rather late to the party, but anyway... If it weren't for hiking poles, I would have had to give up hiking in the mountains 20 years ago (I'm 62), because going downhill was becoming too painful for my long-ago-injured left knee. With poles the knee is fine, and my stamina has become the hike-limiting variable instead. I'm a born klutz, and yes, they also help with stability. My current poles are Lexi Makalus, which weigh 600g (~1 1/4#) for the pair. They are spring-loaded to absorb the jolts of going downhill, which I like. I once bought a lighter-weight pair, and one of them snapped on the first hike. Since I switched to digital, I haven't once wished that one of them could be a monopod or tripod. Re: Sensor size vs. depth of field: explanation of the relationship please
I understand what you are saying and completely agree. But you stop too soon. (Or maybe I go one too far.) I should comment that what you are calling the "circle of confusion" I would call a "defocused point" - i.e. any point that is not on the focal plan. I use the term "circle of confusion" the describe the size at which a defocused point loses apparent sharpness. A little thought experiment: Take a photo on 35mm with a 50mm lens at f8. The physical diameter of the aperture should be 6.25mm (50mm /8). Assume there is a point outside of the focal plan that is defocused but is within the DOF area and so appears to be sharp. Call the point P and its diameter D. Now I take the same shot from the same distance with a 6x7 using a 100mm lens at f8, of course needing the longer focal length to get the equivalent frame at the same distance. The physical diameter of the aperture is 12.5 (100mm / 8). Since the physical size of the aperture is now larger, the defocused point P is correspondingly larger and is 2xD. Being larger it would have less apparent sharpness. That would seem to confirm the idea that as the format gets bigger there is less DOF. But - now enlarge both those images to be 700mm wide. The 35mm exposure is enlarged 20x. The 6x7 exposure is enlarged by 10x. In both enlargements the diameter of point P is now 20xD. If the defocused point is now the same size in both prints, why would its apparent sharpness differ? (I'm obviously taking liberties by ignoring differences in aspect ratio and assuming that 6x7 is twice the size of 35mm, which it is not exactly.) Guidelines for circle of confusion size for use in DOF calculations scale with the size of the format. For example, Wikipedia's circle of confusion page says that the circle of confusion for 35mm is 0.029mm and for 6x7 is 0.059mm. That's what I don't get about the circle of confusion - it seems like all the DOF gained in small formats would be offset by the additional enlargement of the image to get it to viewing size. But that is not how things actually work. My practice is to use the plugin MCE Table Buttons. With this you get easy office-type buttons for table generation and controls. In a table with two columns you can place pics at adjusted sizes. It won't work in tables if pic sizes are too large so success is not always guaranteed. But most scenes were underexposed by about 2 stops. (And it isn’t about the scanning process - you can tell by looking at the slides that they are too dense. Shoulda’ used a Pentax!) I may have overdone the added exposure on the waterfalls - I was trying to bring up the lush green vegetation to the point where it didn’t come across as a dark mass. > and would be interested to see some of these posted next to your current ones > in a how thing's change or don’t I will do a little bit of this. Unfortunately I did not look at the slides before the trip and thus don’t have more than a couple of shots then-and-now. In general, the city still looks much the same. Different cars and buses on the streets, a couple of areas spruced up to handle higher volumes of tourists. In the countryside and around the Iguazu Falls area, major difference I saw was the existence of paved streets and roads. And walkways today to take viewers close to the falls in lieu of the wooden rowboats we used before. > I take it that is YOU at in the last frame? I (and my first wife) and my parents show up in a few frames. That is indeed a younger me in the last frame. One additional background note - these were shot with my first ever SLR, a Nikkormat I had received for Christmas 7 months earlier. I had two lenses: a 50mm (probably f/2.0) and a 105mm. I haven’t been able to extract the EXIF from the slides to determine which lenses were used for which shot > > Have enjoyed the stuff you showed on facebook from the recent journey a lot. Thanks Ann. Re: Sensor size vs. depth of field: explanation of the relationship please
I studied up on this years ago when I got started in macro photography. The Kodak Worships series book on close up photography has an excellent chapter that describes the theory of dof and gives the formula to calculate it. I think John Shaw covered it in earlier film era versions of his "Close UPs In Nature" Basically, in theory DOF is driven by the lens f stop setting and the magnification of the subject. Focal length and format are not directly involved in DOF but obviously longer focal length may mean greater magnification and the magnification (reproduction ratio) of larger formats is higher. If you fill the frame of a Q, a 35mm, and a 6x7 with a 35mm wide subject the magnification ratios are roughly 1:5, 1:1, 2:1 - ie. from 1/5th lifesized to 2x lifesized. Magnification goes up, DOF gets more shallow. In theory, if you take a 1:1 magnification image with a Q, a 35mm and a 6x7 the depth of field in each image is the same, but obviously the crop of each image is completely different with the Q showing something only about 5mm wide and the 6x7 showing something about 7cm wide. I tested this extensively with 35mm great and determined that at the same magnification and f stop setting images taken with a 50mm, 100mm and 200mm at the same f stop setting. Of course, in fact, the images were basically identical but the distance between the camera and subject varied considerably. The one factor I am ignoring is the "circle of confusion" and effect that enlarging the image itself has on the DOF of the final print and that is not something I have never been able to grok and so won't comment on. Maybe someone else can. Mark On 3/7/2015 10:32 AM, Stanley Halpin wrote: Bulent’s recent question about a possible foray into large-format film photography, primarily for macro shots, yielded several comments about how one gets a shallower depth of field with Large Format (LF). I remember in the early days of APS-C and smaller sensors, some were moaning about the difficulty of getting shallow enough depth of field. OK, so it seems that the general consensus is that moving from LF to MF to FF to APS-C to smaller sensor carries with it a corresponding increase in depth of field. But what does this mean? Really? I understand that lenses with longer focal lengths have shallower depths of field. So a 75mm lens will have shallower depth of field than a 50mm. And I understand that a 75mm lens on a 645 format will have the same effective field of view as a 50mm on a FF 35mm format. Is this why the larger formats are considered to have shallower depth of field? Because I need to use a longer lens to achieve the same field of view? What if I had a 100mm macro lens that could be adapted to fit on the 645z and a K-mount FF and a K-mount APS-C. Since the lens and its focal length are constant, does the depth of field remain constant, with only the effective field of view changing? Or does the depth of field also change? In short, I think my question is whether the accepted relationship [LF & MF = shallower depth of field] really has anything to do with the sensor format. I am guessing that people are talking about a practical issue (need to use longer lenses to get the same field of view on a LF) rather than a physical issue of the interaction between sensor size and lens. Sensor size vs. depth of field: explanation of the relationship please
Bulent’s recent question about a possible foray into large-format film photography, primarily for macro shots, yielded several comments about how one gets a shallower depth of field with Large Format (LF).
