Regarding Sigma 18-35 autofocus with phase-detect issues

2015-07-13 Thread Ciprian Dorin Craciun
Hy there all!

I was thinking at getting the Sigma 18-35 to replace my kit lens (DA
18-55 WR) for wide and normal focal lengths (mainly landscapes), but
after reading the Pentax Forums review [1,2] regarding the autofocus
issues (admittedly only while using phase-detect) I completely changed
my mind... (For that amount of money, the fact I don't use live-view,
and that accurate manual focus is almost impossible on current DSLR's
without live-view and focus peaking, it makes this lens unusable for
me...)

However I thought to ask you guys, especially those that have used
such a lens, if it truly has issues at focusing with phase-detect?
(Perhaps you upgraded the firmware? Perhaps you have newer variants
of this lens?) To be clear by "issues" I mean the outcome is mainly
(and noticeably) back-/front-focused, while shot at large apertures or
with close subjects, thus opposite to situations when large
depth-of-field would mask such a problem.

Regarding the review, the issues being reported don't seem to stem out
of sample variation, as they tested about 7 of these on multiple K-3,
a K-50 and a K-30, and the outcome was the same.

Thanks,
Ciprian.

P.S.: Playing "lens-roulette" (that is buying one, testing it,
sending it back, and then possibly looping) is not an option for me...
:)

OT travel advise for the kids

2015-07-13 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Dan, Steve & Cotty Sir, we were in London end August for 3
nights and 4 days on a Thomas Cook group tour. Towards evening around
5 PM it would start drizzling or pouring every day.

Our sad luck I suppose, but we beat the bad weather as we had very
good quality Israeli light weight wind + rain cheaters.

Actually rain is not a big deal for us, being familiar with the heavy
monsoon rains here in Bangalore India. But for a little Baby 10 months
old it could be a bother.

We spent quite some time in the Middle East where we are used to
mostly dry spells. But come November & December with some rain, and
you will see plenty of car accidents / pile ups. Expatriates like us
chose tyres carefully - half sand & half wet weather tread patterns,
and we drove with caution of course with lights on.

Regards.
Bipin.

Interesting. The are brave and inquisitive, so I am sure they can

Not so with my Malamute - Bear.

I was working in the yard today, while my wife was at the pool
listening to a podcast. She called to me said I should bring my
camera to the pool.

She had placed a flowery table cloth on one of the picnic tables on
the pool patio, and a small Praying Mantis had flown on to one of the
flowers.

Since we had recently attended a big screen version of The Princess
Bride at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (hosted by Cary Elwes),
the little fellow immediately brought to my mind The Impressive
Clergyman, as portrayed by Peter Cook.

Thanks to all who looked and commented!
Jack, I'm afraid that it would be an odd aspect ratio crop, but I will
give it a look. Thanks for the suggestion.
Toine, not IN the car, no. I realized we had storms in the
"neighborhood" late and was trying like the dickens to get to them
before dark. It didn't help that I just had to stop a couple of times
to take landscape/skyscape images in the fading light of sunset. I was
on the last leg to reach the storms - a gravel road that stretched 25
miles between the highway and the town of Stockville, Nebraska when I
saw on radar that the storm I had been targeting was falling apart.
There was another more dominant storm behind it, but it was farther
away and it would be well after dark before I could approach it.

When I saw the golden wheat field and windmill I put on the brakes.
The storm in the distance was putting on quite a light show and I
thought I might get something interesting. I pulled the car as far off
the road as I could, but left it running with headlights on and
emergency flashers going while I went just a bit further down the road
and set up on the opposite side. The road can be seen in the lower
right, but some of the light on the ditch weeds is also from my car's
headlights.

The "finger lightning" is far more impressive than what you see in the
cropped square photo. I wanted to eliminate (as much as possible) the
blown-out area of the intense lightning. I'll see if I can share the
full crop later today.

PESO: Double Rainbow in Last Rays of a Stormy Sunset

2015-07-13 Thread Darren Addy
Happy Monday all,
This was one of the images I stopped to make on my rush to reach
storms in south central Nebraska before dark on the evening of the
10th. I didn't think it was all that special (in that I don't think
the photograph captures the beauty that I saw with my eyes when I took
it), but then Ann commented on it in the "Cracks in the Firmament"
thread (thanks Ann - I had NOT PESO'd it) and then I wake up this
morning to find this image getting lots of attention from being added
to Flickr Explore.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/19648144331/

Comments and criticism welcome in equal measure.

Re: PESO: Cracks in the Firmament

2015-07-13 Thread Darren Addy

Same deal as North Wind, but the camera (phone) is pointed west down the
shoreline. Check out the waterfowl - maybe buffleheads or common goldeneyes?

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

OT travel advise for the kids

2015-07-13 Thread Bipin Gupta
David, we did this route recently. We started of from Rome, Paris and
London via the channel tunnel. Please ensure there is a parasol or a
rain proof sheet for the baby's pram because of the perennial rains in
London.

Must see:- London - the millenium wheel (London Eye), Buckingham
Palace changing of the guards, Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum, British
Museum, Tower Bridge & Trafalgar Square.

Paris: the Louvre (Mona Lisa) , Arc de Triomphe, Place de La Concorde,
Eiffel Tower, Cruise on the River Seine, Montmartre Hills, Grand
Palais des Champs Élysées.
Normandy - ?? Did not visit.

We did the group tour through Thomas Cook and they had it organized
all 4-star including the hotels, meals, all entry tickets, train bus
and air tickets, pro Guides at all the places. Best of all were the
friendly people and safety in a group. We were given plenty of time,
never rushed or felt tired. We would leave at 8 AM after breakfast and
return by 8 PM to the hotel.
There were some late night shows after dinner for people who felt like
going out for some extra fun, like the Eiffel Tower by night. The
lighting was awesome.

In Rome we saw quite some thuggery and Passport stealing, so one has
to be careful in Europe.
Look out for Starbucks, for the coffee in most European Restaurants
are cold and insipid. Ha ha! Free use of toilets too. Be prepared to
pay at least 2 Euros for using Rest Rooms.

Ensure they have medical and accident coverage please.

Good luck to your daughter, son in law and the baby.

Regards.
Bipin.

The Lord must have guidethed your hand.

If I were you I wouldn't publicise it until all the commercials were sorted
out, you had a grotto established, with paying turnstiles, press releases ready
to go and (obviously) a holy web site.
