A subject I am all too involved with is scanning slides and trying to find
different ways to do so.

I've come to the conclusion that there are no shortcuts, and I also use an
Epson V600 which does an excellent job. It, as you know, only scans 4 slides
at a time and I believe the V850 does 12. That, in hindsight would have been
quicker, but I found the V600 at a super price.

I've also got a Nikon Coolscan IV, but the results aren't any better than
the V600, and it will take you as long to scan 1 slide.

What else? I've tried the tripod set up over a lightbox with a K3, and not
been over impressed. I've tried the bellows set with the slide attachment
and extension tubes and then you have light issues, or have difficulty
getting all of the frame of the slide in focus (but OK for parts of a slide
- like a pre-computer crop). I've had remote diffused flash guns set up
behind the slide to get the right light exposure - but it will drive you
nuts.

The only in camera way I've found works is to use a full frame camera; Nikon
do two lenses I think which are suitable a 58mm and (the one I've used) a
60mm macro with the ES-1 slide carrier attached. Better results, but there
are still focus and light issues to get consistent images you will be happy
with. You know where this is going

Use the scanner!

Malcolm

2015-09-11 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks Dan. It's always very interesting to hear what others look for and see.

The subject is a jet fighter. It's a detail abstraction, not a classic
documentarian photograph of a fighter. Every bit in the photo is a part of Lt.
Scott's fighter jet, all massive shapes, colors, parts of this engine of flight
and fight. No piece of it seen in this photo is complete; it is all becoming,
waiting, ready. It awaits just Lt Scott to be in his control seat: His presence
would complete the moment, after which it will take to motion, to the air. But
even in stillness it is all motion and imperative force.

Very few of the photos I post should be read literally. ;-)

Re: PESO: Supercell City

2015-09-11 Thread Mark C

Remarkable captures, both of them!

On 9/10/2015 10:35 AM, Darren Addy wrote:

Got off work yesterday to find central Nebraska to be in quite the
supercell environment and had a fun little local chase until about an
hour after sundown. Here are two images from the outing. Both were
taken from essentially the same spot.

I parked my car at a rest area on eastbound Interstate 80 south of
Grand Island, NE and ran across the 4 lanes of traffic to get some
powerlines out of my shot. Then I found myself too low and the 9-foot
tall cornfield was obscuring my view of the bottom of the storm.
Fortunately, there was an old thick tangled wild grapevine that had
grown around the barb wire fence and fence post that was sturdy enough
for me to stand on that got me high enough to shoot over the tops of
the corn. This is looking almost due north. I opted for a B
rendering of that shot:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/20664233023/in/dateposted-public/

Returning to my car I saw another cell to the west that was nearly
scraping the ground and was backlit by the setting sun. I ran down the
median towards it to get some artificial lights, from the rest area to
my left, out of the frame. I had to work fast because this whole storm
system was moving rapidly to the southeast.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/21098836120/in/dateposted-public/

These were just two of the supercells that were scattered all over
central Nebraska that evening and some produced damaging hail. I
haven't seen it yet, but I'm told that my daughter's car, a newish
little Toyota in Kearney, was totaled by the hail there.

Today is going to have severe storms nearby again, but this time
powered by a cold front. I hate cold front setups, but depending upon
the timing I may be out again this evening. This is the storm season
that just keeps on giving...

FS Friday: K20D + kit lenses

2015-09-11 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

I have a K20D body that I don't use since I acquired a K30 and is in good
working condition.

If someone is interested I am ready to send it at a very good price. I prefer
that it goes to the hands of a good PDMLer rather than bargain it in the local
second hand market.

I have also a 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses (the first edition) that I can add to
the package.
I have the box and all the original accessories, guide, and an extra battery.

If someone is interested let me know and I'll send more detailed description,
pictures, etc.
Regarding price, make me an offer. Anyway I'll sell it for less than KEH EX
current value.

Regards,
Jaume

PESO - Beetle on a Leaf

2015-09-11 Thread frank theriault
Uninspired title.

Have no idea what type of beetle this is - how many million species of
beetles are there? He's about twice the size of a lady bug. I rather
liked the iridescence (which I suspect would be spectacular in the
sun) and the little white tufts on his sides:

Any help on species would be appreciated.
