Re: LR clears adjustements upon applying "creative" presets?

2015-12-16 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I just figured out a workaround. Here it is if someone is interested:
I took a photo [a virtual copy] (just in case, it was the photo with the
minimum amount of adjustements needed) to which the desire preset was
applied, and placed it into the collection together with the [virtual
copies of] photos that I wanted to convert with this preset (sephia in
this case). Then I chose all the photos while making sure that the
"converted" photo is in the focus. Then I did "sync" and chose to sync:

"Tone curve"
"Treatment (Black & White)
"Black & White Mix"
"Split Toning".

I am not sure if "Tone Curve" and "Split Toning" were playing any role in
this preset, but since I haven't touched those myself, it wouldn't be a
problem if those are synchronized as well.

This did the job.

I am surprised why applying the presets is not set to apply the
"differential" settings, but changes all settings. Maybe they changed this
in LR 6.x, I don't know..

I just discovered a strange behavior in LR (5.x):
I had a set of photos that were all processed (exposure, noise reduction,

_all_ previous adjustments.

Does anybody know if there is a setting in LR that would allow me applying
these presets without resetting all adjustments?

Re: PESO - Bismuth Crystal

2015-12-16 Thread Mark C
Hi Ken - I think the image was in focus, though slightly degraded due to
the long shutter speed (0.4 second). I tested the setup at that shutter
speed using a dollar bill as a subject and found that the detail was
very good, but the resolution of some of the individual fibers in the
paper was not as sharp as it could have been.

I think there is just something odd about the iridescent reflection and
how the stacking software constructs the image. At full size, some of
the patterns in the gold area resolve into whorls and swirls that look
more like something in motion than something solid. Using a 10x loupe I
cannot see any of the patterns present in the gold areas, so I was
surprised to see them emerge in the 4x photos. But then, at some angles
the crystal is dull gray with no color at all, so the patterns of the
reflections probably come into play. Larry's comment about bokeh
stacking might be a good explanation.

I need to get a simple manual ring flash and try again - I was using an
LED ring light that was woefully inadequate for lighting the subject.
The crystals are are like stair step pyramids and I was shooting into
the cavity - only a straight on light would work.

Wirecutter currently recommends Dell UltraSharp U2715H, which is $400 at
Newegg; i would guess it would have much better color than the models you
looked at, but there are probably some cheaper 27" models which aren't too
bad; you can see how they chose it here:

2015-12-16 Thread Paul Stenquist
Still haven’t found either the time or the light for any serious shooting, but
i did go out for a few minutes late today to practice with this rig on a
monopod. This pic is my neighbor’s wife coming home. She’s traveling at about
30 mph and is about 700 feet from camera. Shot at f5.6, IO 3200, 1/1600th,
450mm. Cropped to about 60% of frame. Underexposed due to the headlights (I
wasn’t planning this shot) but pushed up a stop of more in conversion. Very
pleased with the autofocus and the minimal flare. Some sharpening in PS.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18142525=lg

A street sign about 300 feet distant. Cropped to about 80% of frame. Shot at
f5.6/ 1/800th, I/SO 3200, 450mm. A bit of sharpening, although it didn’t seem
to need it.

A pair of trees about 200 feet distant. No crop. Shot at f5.6, 1/800th, ISO
3200, 450mm. Minimal sharpening. Focus was on the tree on the right of course.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18142527=lg

Hope to try some lower ISO pics tomorrow if the skies lighten up. Getting used
to managing the lens on the monopod. It’s much bigger and heavier than the
60-250 but well balanced and solid as a rock. Here’s a cellphone pic of it
dwarfing the K3, fully extended at 450 mm. I now need an 86mm circular
polarizer for my car shoots. The Hoya is about $130 at B Top brands run $300
to $500. The Hoya will have to do, but i’ve had good experiences with them.

Re: Monitor Opinion.

2015-12-16 Thread Igor PDML-StR

P.J.,

Steve made a good point that the Dell monitor has only VGA (and HDMI)
connector.
http://www1.la.dell.com/vc/en/corp/peripherals/dell-se2416h-monitor/pd.aspx?refid=dell-se2416h-monitor=corp
While HDMI is digital, from experience, I am thinking that DVI is more
convenient. (HDMI had some limitations, if I remember correctly.)

In any case, - if you'd be considering a high-resoltion 27" monitor,
before buying it, make sure your video-card supports that resolution.
AFAIK, some 2560x1440 (especially the cheaper ones) do not support
lower resolution modes at all.

but if you can afford it, i would suggest at least a 27" monitor . not one

Also, some customer services outside of the US are able to message via Skype.

Thanks, that's a good idea.

The preset in question ("B Creative - Sepia Tone") has a bunch of

food items and try to get to the finish line first. If they miss an
item or supermarket, they're disqualified.

This year the finish was in Kensington Market, and Kyle, who finished
second, was all smiles. In the background is a statue of the late
Canadian actor Al Waxman, whose most famous role was the titular
character in the long-running series ~The King of Kensington~:

Re: PESO - Bismuth Crystal

2015-12-16 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Rick! I am hoping this will open up a new line of macro work.
Insects and spiders can be interesting but they are not too appealing.

All punning aside, Mark (at least for a minute or two), both of the fossil and

K01 with reverse mounted SMC K 24 f3.5, 70 stacked images. I could not position
a flash well to shoot into the crystal (it is very 3 dimensional) so I used
ambient light which resulted in a shutter speed of 0.4 seconds per shot. I
would prefer to use the flash to counter any vibration related blur, but the
long exposures came out OK.

Comments welcome.

LR clears adjustements upon applying "creative" presets?

2015-12-16 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I just discovered a strange behavior in LR (5.x):
I had a set of photos that were all processed (exposure, noise reduction,
sharpening, ...). I applied a "creative" BW preset (sephia), and that
reset _all_ previous adjustments.

Does anybody know if there is a setting in LR that would allow me applying
these presets without resetting all adjustments?

Igor
