John's numbers would have been accurate at one time, but digital has changed
that. It's easy to find a good photographer her who will shoot a wedding,
ceremony and reception, for $500 now. That's a no prints, turn over the files
rate. Videographers are widely available for $300. Yes, some still bill at
higher rates, but they're starving.

I know that the vast majority of my photography up to about the last 20 years
was to simply record things with a few real 'keepers' amongst the rest.

About 20 years ago I started to attempt to refine my photography and produce
'wall hangers' so to speak and stop recording the more mundane subjects out
there.

It was the collection of these 'keepers' that made me stop and weed out most of
the previous 20 plus years of my photography.

With a much improved eye and careful editing I now have a few thousand images I
truly regard as 'keepers’.

I somewhat agree with you Ken. If one’s goal is to produce a select set of
“wall hangers” that are worthy of one’s careful craftsmanship, then one
shouldn’t waste time shooting what is obviously going to be a poor shot due to
lighting issues, too much wind causing subject movement, intrusive elements in
the composition, etc.

But there are many other reasons for taking pictures. Dan and Brian talk about
capturing memories of places (e.g., a poorly lit Grand Canyon.) For many
people, it is about capturing memories of people and occasions (and places).

I am in occasional contact with a few from my high school class. There was a recent
reunion (which I could not attend.) My friend Ingrid afterwards walked to a
landmark waterfall, her husband took a P&S or cellphone image of her on the
path behind the falls. She posted it on Facebook, commented how happy she was to
have been able to visit the place. I have struggled with that waterfall. Lighting
is poor in the gorge, too many people on the path, most of whom want that shot
under the falls. It is possible but highly unpopular to set up a tripod on the
narrow pathway. It is possible to do a decent portrait but it takes care and luck.
Someone commented on Ingrid’s photo, gushing about what a wonderful shot it was. It
wasn’t wonderful. It was approaching pretty awful. Poor focus, camera movement,
subject too small to be recognizable unless you knew who you were looking at. But
for Ingrid and others, it was wonderful because it captured her in a moment in
time, at a special place she is too seldom able to visit.

I just updated my MacBook Pro to Sierra and found that I needed to
download/install the latest Canon print drivers and Gutenprint 5.2.11

Re: OT: update to macOS Sierra

2016-10-27 Thread Stanley Halpin
Over the last couple of days I have upgraded (from 10.11.x) to 10.12.0, then to
10.12.1 on my iMac and Meg’s laptop. No drama, no problems. I even woke up Siri
and welcomed her to my desktop; she said something like “I don’t know what you
mean. How about a web search…”

Do note that, once you get to 10.12.0, you need to proceed to upgrade to
10.12.1 In my past experience such upgrades are bundled and take you directly
to the latest version, so I suspect that .1 was a quick patch and is probably
important.

I hope you have a good book to read while the process moves along.

This is exactly the kind of application that DSLR video is NOT good
for. Borrow or rent a video camera for this kind of thing. Ask Cotty.

Re: Could a K-3 II video for two hours continuously?

2016-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi Larry,

I am not sure about K-3, I have never used it.

Just in case, - let me tell you what I know about K5 (and K7)
K5-IIs has a length/time limit that depends on the resolution.
At Full-HD, it was less than 10 minutes, I believe.
At 720p, it is close to 10 minutes, and it is in high teens or 20-s for
the VGA resolution (which you probably wouldn't want).

The limiting factor is the size of a single file on the file system, - I
don't remember what it was, - probably ~3-3.5 GB. That's the FAT
limitation, and I suspect it remains on exFAT (or what is it called that
SDXC is using?).

Besides, there is yet another caveat that you meed to be aware of.
Even you could get away with multiple files, - after some time (which
depends on the ambient temperature), - between some 20 and 40 minutes, the
sensor starts showing overheating alerts, and then ultimately shuts down.

I believe, this happens because the thermal sink is rather low (due to the
IS that needs to move the sensor).

So, even if K-3 can deal with larger files, - the sensor overheating is
likely to be present.

I hope this helps.

Igor

I just got a reply from Paul C Buff on this topic:

Hi Larry,
Redesigning the White Lightning to incorporate an LED would be quite
an undertaking and cost several thousands of dollars. At this time are not
looking to do this.
However, you can screw in dimmable LED lamp into the WL modeling socket.

We do not have lengthy data if this LED model lamp will work long term in
our lights. As long and nothing metal on the LED lamp touches the wire
wrapped flash tube the WL will fire. If the metal part of the LED lamp
touches the wire wrapped flash tube the WL will not fire.

Those hot modeling lights are just part of the cost of doing business
with these strobes. I only burn myself once in a while now. :)

The brand new Alien Bees -- called DigiBees -- have built in LED
modeling lights. And they have many Einstein features too. They are
looking great spec-wise, though I have yet to see one in the flesh.

Beautiful. Somewhere I'd love to visit and see skies like this through a
viewfinder.

I used the DA* 16-50/2.8.
Auroras are rare where I live. Tromsø in Northern Norway is ideal, and more
than thousand clicks North of my place.

2016-10-27 Thread Jostein Øksne
Thanks Ken.
There was some guesswork involved with regards to the shape and movement of the
clouds, they came out much more dominant I the pic than in real life. The
shapes in the auroras were quite well defined, but I think most of the activity
was North of my horizon, so that what shows is the top of it.

Glad the foreground lighting comes across. I placed the car diagonally on the
