Re: Computer upgrade two step.

2016-12-11 Thread Zos Xavius
I once got it combined with some choice words to startup in safe mode
with F8 at boot. The thing is the window is so small it is almost
impossible to really to hit it at the right time. If anything it
should have been left in testing a little longer. A lot of the
problems I got caught up with were certainly driver related and once
they solved some of the legacy driver issues I really haven't had any
problems. The newer builds seems a bit more reliable overall too. I'm
also on the slow testing ring, but I see no real reason to be on the
bleeding edge anymore. A lot of my initial frustrations have all been
rectified.

That's my experience as well. It ran much better on our 4GB systems than
W7 - it was even quite usable on the oldest (dual celeron processor) box.

There are things to dislike about it - there's no easy way to force it
to boot into safe mode if you can't get through the initial boot sequence,
to name but one - but overall I find it to be an improvement.

It's a very nice photo, with a very quiet peaceful feel to it.

Interesting, the right side of the bookshelf gives the photo both a
"square composition" and a "horizontal composition, and the photo is
well composed in either case.

The plane of focus seems to be on the handle of the coffee cup and the
piercing, but not on her eyes, which doesn't make sense, unless you were
shooting up at her. I think it might just be the sharp, hard edges make
those more prominent. Looking more closely, her knee and shoulder also
seem to be pretty sharp. I think it might have been improved a bit if
the field of focus were further back so that her hair was sharper and
her knee was less sharp.

Did you, by any chance, get any shots of that pose from about two feet
to your left of this one? Or was there too much clutter to the right of
the bookshelf?

What is considered cold for a Diesel?

Too many variables for that to have an easy answer. There are winter
and summer
grades of fuel. If there aren't many diesels around there, you could
have
picked up a tank of summer grade from a slow moving supplier.

Should plugging in the block heater make a difference?

Yes. There are variations in block heaters, too. Maybe your vehicle
has one
designed for higher temps than yours, fitted to keep the production
line
running. Is it plugged in all night?

Can glow plugs be flakey?

Yes but not until you've done a considerable mileage. I'd be more
inclined to
suspect the power feed, or even the software control of them in such a
new
vehicle.

It's not all that cold here right now. Anything below about -16ºC is

an

issue for this truck. This morning was -27ºC, and it took multiple
attempts to get it running. Starting is completely automatic, the

only

control the driver has in this regard is a PHD button that initiates

the

start cycle. After that, it's up to the truck.
I like the truck, but if I need to go out and start it and warm it up

every 5-6 hours during the cold months, it is not going to be a

pleasant

vehicle to own. They say don't idle it for extended periods because

of

the particulate filters, and if it is idled to much, it goes into
perpetual regeneration of the filter, which means it's dumping raw

fuel

into the exhaust to burn off the soot. This drops gas mileage to

Dead right about the filters. DPF equipped vehicles need to be run on
longer
journeys, mostly, with regular vigorous use to keep the filters working
well.

U.S. Diesel standards were much stricter than Europe's for decades. I worked

Actually, Paul;
The standars for emissions have been phased in gradually, in "tiers".
There's been a strong push from the car mfgs, starting at least a decade
ago, to make authorities in both the EU, USA, Japan and others harmonise

There's no more "banning" in the US than elsewhere, so sales drops are
more likely due to other factors such as customer preference or

Bill,
A block heater is a good idea anyhow. A pre-heated engine use less fuel
than a cold engine, and the interior heater will deliver warm air
sooner. :-)

What is considered cold for a Diesel?

Having used diesel buses for 9 years answer is, it varies on the
engine. I found Internationals and Cat engines would start in -15 or
so with out trouble, Mercedes engines had to be helped along. Older
Internationals needed to be plugeed in around -5 or so.

Should plugging in the block heater make a difference?

Yes plug it in.

Can glow plugs be flakey?

Yes they can be flaky, our rule of thub was to cycle the glow plugs at
least 3-4 times before attempting to start iyt when it got to -5 or so
with out a plug in. Yes Wabasto heaters in the newer Internationals
and Thomas built buses are a god send but they break down a lot. I ran
mine off a timer set 30 min before i arrived at the bus.

Some Webastos have the electronic controller built into the case, above the
combustion chamber. Guess what happens? Yes, "frying tonight". Long term
answer is to remove said controller to a cooler place. Actually it has to be a
new controller, as they are "potted" and effectively unrepairable.

Does knowing that make me a wonk?

Dave

If there are any diesel wonks on the forum, your thoughts would be
appreciated.

If you have a spyder 2 you will be well served by a newer colorimeter.
I would highly suggest a Colormunki Display as its the most accurate
out of all of them right now and half what the i1 that uses the same
sensor costs. Paired with displaycal it will give you a very accurate
profile.

Side note: if you have a legitimate windows 7 key you can still
upgrade to windows 10. Google windows 10 accesibility upgrade. Just
pretend you are deaf or blind for a day and do it. Windows 10 is a
pretty big leap in performance over Windows 7. I don't know how much
ram you have but 8GB is a pretty good number to start with if you are
running the newer lightroom. 16-32 is a lot better I must say.

Computer upgrade two step.

2016-12-11 Thread P. J. Alling

By which I mean one step forward one step back.

I just finished an OS replacement on my Desktop, to Windows 7 "Ultimate"
which you would think is the Pinnacle of Windows 7 but isn't, it's one
level down from that, (I don't think that word means what they think it
means).

Well anyway, I've got a working image of Win7 on my desktop, but now
comes the fun task of discovering what hardware and software that I've
come to rely on over the past few years no longer works. I already know
that my trusty Spyder2 isn't supported, (crap).

Almost 24 full hours of bug fixes and "improvements" automatically
downloaded with the occasional glitch to make you pull your hair out,
(and I really don't have enough to spare these days), at least that's
almost over.

I decided to do a clean install as my previous version of Windows was
32bit, but hardware will support 64...

Why did I finally succumb to this, one because I wanted to feel real
empathy for Dave and John in their struggles but mainly the parade of no
longer supported on... messages has been starting in earnest.

The only good thing is a few programs I've wanted to try that weren't
supported by the old OS will work on the new.

OT: Diesels

2016-12-11 Thread Bipin Gupta
The trend here in India is for Diesel Cars as Diesel Fuel is 30%
Cheaper than Petrol.
And Trucks, Busses, Tractors, Trains. Generators etc were always Diesel.

What a waste in transporting just one chap in one vehicle. Our roads
are chock a block with
traffic moving at snails pace during the Office Commute Hours.

In Delhi, India's Capital, ODD & Even numbered cars ply on alternate
days, such are the levels
of pollution, smog & fog so as to disrupt Flights, Trains & Highway traffic.

God Bless Mother Earth.

Regards.

Some Webastos have the electronic controller built into the case, above the
combustion chamber. Guess what happens? Yes, "frying tonight". Long term
answer is to remove said controller to a cooler place. Actually it has to be a
new controller, as they are "potted" and effectively unrepairable.

Does knowing that make me a wonk?

Re: PESO: Family Portrait

2016-12-11 Thread Bob W-PDML
Interesting observation!

This is the Pentax list, so to me the outlier was the M2 because it is not a
Pentax (lovely camera though). I replied to Bill's comment that it is the daddy
of them all because (depending on how you define 'family') Leica is the
ancestor of all 35mm cameras, and the Pentaxes are all in the line of descent,
even the digital one. Perhaps I should have said 'great-uncle'.

Thanks Malcolm.

I must say I am intrigued by the responses from Bill, Bob W, and Alan. Reminded
me of a sub-section of a multivariate-analysis statistics course I took many
decades ago. The issue was how to systematically identify underlying common
themes in various responses to a set of stimuli and then to apply the results
in a classification process. (For the biologists in the room, there is some
overlap here with numerical taxonomy.) In a class exercise we got together in
teams of 2-3 persons and tried to sort a handful of assorted nuts and bolts and
nails and screws and washers etc. Some brass, some stainless steel, some small,
some larger, etc. From all of this emerged an understanding of how to use one
form of question to discern perceived dimensionality and the relative
importance of different dimensions. Simply ask persons to look at a set of four
objects and say which is the different one.

I did NOT have that in mind when I posted the Family Portrait! But there are 4
cameras shown. Three from the film era, one digital. Three are relatively
small, one is larger. Three are Pentax, one Leica. Three are SLR or DSLR, one
is rangefinder. Three were sporting a 50mm lens, one with a 35mm. Bill, Bob W.,
and Alan all picked up on one or more of these differences but it is not clear
which was the real defining difference they had in mind when making their
comments. And I wonder if all three were reacting to the same aspect (I am
guessing brand name) or if they were seeing different things.

Just something to mull over while I am putting off the chore of getting the
snow blower out from underneath the pile of tarps etc. in the back of the
garage and clearing the driveway…

I seem to be having trouble with printing from LR to my Epson 2400
again after the OS upgrade. It seems to only want to print 8x10 for
some reason. I have tried picking the 5x7 mode but it wants to print
larger for some reason. Print diolouge box had 8x10 as preset for some
reason, i rest to default, no luck.I believe i downloaded the Epson
updates so i may have to look into that. Minor frustrations
obviously.:-)
