Thanks, Subash. Apart from the Three Banded & some Blacksmiths, there
was nothing to see. I think the receding waterline, free of vegetation,
may be a factor.

Maybe they had the same reaction I had, when I was in a salvage yard
looking for a used part and stumbled across the carcass of an old, (not

restore-able."  After which my common sense slapped me across the face,

Re: GESO: PHALABORWA ORCHID SHOW

2018-09-08 Thread John

With AWB you have to individually correct every image.

I think I've mentioned before that I always shoot on "Daylight" white balance.
The white-balance may be wrong, but when it is, all of the images from a single
session are "wrong" in the same direction & same amount.

Later I can easily correct them in a batch ... fix the first one in Camera Raw
and apply that correction to the rest of them. May still have to correct the
white-balance in a few, but not every one of them.

PESO x 2: Bird & Buck

2018-09-08 Thread Alan C
I went for my weekly drive to Sable Dam this afternoon. Very hot & dry.
Hardly saw anything (2 Giraffe, 2 Elephants, some Dassies, 4 Kudus & a
few birds - not a single Impala). Sable Dam is still about 40% full so
should last out to the rains which are only about 2½ months away. Here
are shots of a Three Banded Sand-Plover on the edge of the dam & a
browsing Kudu Cow (scroll right) just inside the Phalaborwa gate:

K5 & HD 55-300.

Erich Lessing, 95, Photographer Who Chronicled Postwar Europe, Dies - The New York Times

2018-09-08 Thread ATT

NYT obit of a photographer I’d never heard of. (There are MANY, of course.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/07/obituaries/erich-lessing-dead.html?emc=edit_th_180908=todaysheadlines=543503450908

A couple quotes that got my attention:

“I don’t interpret, nor do I adjust anything in the darkroom,” he continued. “I
am a realistic photographer.”

When he photographed Eisenhower, he recalled, many of his colleagues relied on
their newfangled gadgetry while he patiently waited for an unanticipated
opportunity.

“I had my Leica and that was all,” he recalled. “I looked at them all and
thought, ‘There is usually some hitch — when their film is being moved along,
that will be when there’s an interesting picture to be taken.’ ”

The way I interpret it is less about making England great again, more about
relying less - not at all even - on the EU dictating what England can and
cannot do. But really, if you join a club, you play by the rules right? Or you
lobby to change the rules with the agreement of other players through
democracy. Or you decide not to play any more.

Working in the media and having access to both pro and anti advocates, I can
understand both sides of the argument. What the vociferous pros and antis don't
seem to realise is that there is no gain without some pain (for the benefit of
the whole thing). Moderates realise this and we knuckle down and make best of
it.

I think I will relinquish this thread back to the OP, and go get dressed ready
to pick up Godfrey from his pub bed and breakfast. We have a little sightseeing
planned for today and I'm running late!

Yep I'm with you there. The whole process may have been actually contrary to
the laws of the land? However, unpicking it could be worse IMO.

The next year should be interesting !!
