It was a damn good feature. Bill, see if you can remember to bring that

I can bring an extra Bogen 3021 with pan head and one missing rubber foot.

Film - I doubt that I will actually shoot much at all - maybe just a
couple
of rolls of Reala or NPH400, but I think it will be primarily a digital
affair. I probably won't be entering the competition, I have never really
shot slide film before and could end up with some very embarrassing
results!
 ;-)

No one need see them but you. You and you alone get them back on Sunday
morning and decide which ones, if any, you wish to enter in the contest.
The first 2 years I attended, I entered the contest. Then I found out how
much more fun it was to relax and have fun than to run all over the mountain
looking for something to photograph.

Boris for instance, get a lot from PDML and he is a lively
contributor -- I
don't know where he finds the time. There are others like him. Easy
identification of the subject might help them as well.

I think it would be more effective to split the list into sublists.
Off the top of my head I would recommend these 6 lists (perhaps with
 shorter names):

pentax-screwmount - discussion of M42 screwmount lenses and cameras
pentax-kmount-film - discussion of K-mount film cameras and lenses
pentax-kmount-digital - discussion of K-mount digital cameras and lenses
pentax-general-photography - discussion of general photographic topics
   and critiques of photographs
 pentax-medium-format - 645 and 67 camera discussion
pentax-off-topic - all of the other stuff that has nothing to do with
photography that often consumes 50% or more of the list traffic.

There is a little overlap on k-mount lenses (they can go under the
film or digital section), but I think that is appropriate. People
with digital Pentax SLRs often have different requirements for lenses
than those with film SLRs due to the crop factor and some of the
issues that only come up with digital. Plus there are digital only
lenses now like the DA 16-45/4.

There might be room for a 7th list to talk about PS cameras, but that
isn't a very popular topic on here. You don't want to fragement lists
too much because the less used ones tend to die anyway. Given that
a different split might make more sense:

 pentax-35mm - All 35mm film Pentax cameras
pentax-digital - All pentax digital cameras
pentax-medium-format - All Pentax medium format cameras
 pentax-off-topic
 pentax-photography

I would love to see such a split. Currently I find it impossible to
keep up with this list because there is so much off topic banter.
If the lists were split this way I'd join pentax-digital and
 pentax-photography.

You're probably right, but I've had no problems with either pre-set white
balance or manual white balance.

There is a big point to RAW besides extra resolution that you might
get from avoiding compression artificacts. RAW saves 12 bits of data
per pixel (instead of 8) and the data hasn't been run through the
white balance or exposure code yet. As a result you can make sweeping
white balance changes and better exposure changes than you can make to
 a JPEG file.

 Hello,
I'm about a week or two away from ordering my *ist D and I've got
another question for the group. Simply said, which Media is preferred
 by you guys:

 A. The MicroDrives, if so which brand as I've seen and IBM and maybe one
 other.
 OR
 B. CF, I've seen that these have some of Accelaration feature which the
 *ist D has support for.

I've seen a few specs on the Microdrive claiming 45mb/sec and 9mb/sec
on the CF cards with accelaration. I'd prefer to have the larger
capacity item as I'd rather not have to deal with downloads in the
middle of a party or while I'm out on the boat/lake. However, I'm
wondering how this affects battery life on the camera since initially
I'm not getting the grip since I've heard so many things about battery
 issues.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 Rod

 Yesterday I attended a friend's wedding. I took along the D and a couple
of
lenses and flash. I was pretty much in snap-shooter mode taking
pictures
of my ex-coworkers, friends, the wife, etc. and having a grand old time.

At the beginning of the event I decided to replace an old set of Lithium
AAs
for a set of Sunpak rechargeable NiMHs. I had just charged them so they
 were very fresh.

20 frames later (I was using AF, the camera was set for 3sec review and
every few shots I would hit the play button to show someone a goofy
picture)
 the batteries were dead.

Luckily, one of my wacky friends had a huge pack of AA alkalines in his
car.
I put a set in and shot another 70 frames or so during the night. They
are
still in the camera going strong.

What's the deal with the NiMHs?

Set the camera mode to manual, then use the aperture ring to set your

While I VERY seldom use AE with film, I have several ES/ESII
cameras that offer ON THE FLY aperture priority
AE WITHOUT having to stop down, even with SCREWMOUNT
Pentax lenses that I use. That is 1972 technology and
better than the *istD fix IMHO.

It takes less than one second for the *istD to set the shutter speed.

While I am not using a DSLR at this point, I THINK
my preferred exposure method would be AE with autobracketing
continous, not 1-shot stopped down AE...

I don't think the 1972 technology allows for autobracketing.

Thanks folks for getting me straightened out here...

My terminology is weak so I appreciate being corrected on not using
the word exposure in reference to the smart modes.
Also, I'm glad to see that it doesn't sound like I'll have too steep
of a learning curve in dealing with the lack of Smart modes. This had
 me a bit concerned.
A few other questions for you guys...
 1. Do my remotes (wired and wireless) for my ZX-7 work with the *istD?
I love the wireless remote when taking group pictures so that I can
 include myself!

Your wireless remote will work with the *istD, the wired, I'm not sure, but
I think not.

 2. Has anyone had experience with the battery grip? I have one for my
ZX-7 and love it. It gives the camera a bit of extra weight which helps
in keeping the camera steady along with making it bigger and easier to
 hold.

With the battery life being as long as it is, and considering the ability to
use AA NiMh batteries in the camera, I've decided not to purchase the grip.
On the *istD the battery grip is more of a personal preference than with the
MZ/ZX cameras. For my use, the vertical release isn't worth the excess
cost, whereas for others it may be

In the early 60's (maybe '61?) Life Magazine published a famous photo of a

My roomate and I are at loggerheads. She says he's hearing for the first

Can anyone recall the photographer? The issue of Life? (Most
importantly)

alone
now. Sad to note that a lot of the land for airports is still used as car
parking, as despite direct rail links to Stanstead, everyone wants the
car.

Here in the USA, airport parking lots are an airport's largest source of

Re: Firmware 1.10 and M lens

My guess is that this is a warning that if you change either the aperture or
shutter speed, the green button needs to be pressed again.

Think I'll go out and shoot some with the Vivitar S1 70-210.

Bill

My only confusion is that the associated paperwork on how to use HyM
still warns about a possible exposure error. p. 129 in the book
essentially repeats this warning. I guess I just don't see the
 problem.

OK, now for the $64,000 question:

Once the ap and shutter speed have been set,

It remembers them until reset. If you change the aperture value, you have

It only works in manual mode with basically aperture priority. Set the
aperture, press the green button and you've got the correct shutter speed
for center weighted metering (matrix is not available except on A lenses.
As long as the light is constant, the setting is fine, but does not
automatically change if the light does. In that case, press the green button
again. It takes less than 1 second for the camera to compute the correct
shutter speed.

The release mentions HyperManual mode, but doesn't specify aperture
priority. If I stop an M or K lens down and press the green button, will
this give a correct shutter speed in both manual and aperture priority
modes? If it works for aperture priority, will the shutter speed vary
with the light, or do I need to press the green button each time I want to
 meter the scene?

I try and remember to turn mine to auto when I'm done shooting for the
current session just in case an op shows up unexpectedly. When shooting, I
try and match the white balance to the current conditions. When shooting
indoors without flash, I'll do a test shot or two with the default balances
for the current lighting, and if the review isn't to my satisfaction, I'll
set the white balance manually using a sheet of Epson Premium Glossy paper
that I use for printing.

Good Point! I haven't seen much on the list in the way of managing the
white balance for the *istDers. Since my purchase of a few weeks ago,
I've
kept it on automatic white balance. Does anyone here actively change
their
white balance specific to their subjects or lighting? Any thoughts are
 welcome here.

 Have a great day,

With the *ist D, check your ISO and white balance before you start
shooting.

The comm port will be used for firmware upgrades, and I've heard that
computer control is coming via a firmware update.

Bill

The argument about USB 1.1, 2.0 or Firewire doesn't interest me. If the
only thing I can do with the comm port is download info from the card, you
may as well leave it off. I find a card reader much more convenient and
would rather have one less hole in the camera body. On the other hand, if
I could use that port to control the camera with my computer, that would
be
 great.

Cesar,

What I like about the Gossen Digisix is the ability to clip it on the flash
shoe. Kind of like the old clip ons in the days before in camera metering,
except this one has the ability to do both incident and reflected metering.
There's a newer model that also does flash metering.

 Bill,

I always carry an external meter. I do use it quite a bit. It is nice to
know that you can use the internal meter though when using an external
meter
 just is not practical.

 Bill,

Thanks for the info. I may have to look at it at GFMtn.
I used to carry around the Sekonic Studio Deluxe L-398M (from memory).
Now
I cart about the Sekonic L-358 Flash Meter (because it is a flash meter).

So nice to be up to speed,

At least the Pentax K and M lenses are usable, granted with restrictions, on
the *ist D. This is more than can be said about 20-30 year old Canon lenses
on their DSLR's

I am one who eagerly wanted to get the *istD only to be disappointed that
it
would not offer full compatibility with older K and M lenses as my PZ1-p
does. I no longer think of myself as owning any new Pentax equipment. As
long as film is around, I will continue to use my current film based
Pentaxes fully. Frankly, I think the way to go is Canon.

I can't wait to get an *ist D. However I would like
to ask everyone's opinion whether it's a good time to
jump in now or wait for the next Pentax dSLR. Where
do you see this going in the near future? Will Pentax
release a higher resolution camera (8 or 9 MP) or just
continue to update the *istD with more features. Or
will they release another 6.*MP dSLR based on the MZ-S
  or PZ-1p platform?

And didn't someone write that the Super Tak screw mount lenses were

I once had a manager that refused to go partying on New Year's Eve. She

I have no doubt you are correct. I'm only saying that Pentax didn't totally
change their mount and that they are more compatible with their older lenses
than Canon. According to my Pentax rep, FWIW, there was a technical reason
for dropping the aperture coupler.

With the greatest of respect Uncle Bill, a while back when Canon dumped
on their obviously very loyal customer base, some saw it as a brave move.
Canon took the bull by the horns and said right chaps, there's no way
around this, we simply need to move on and get on with a new design - it
paves the way for the future. It's simply no good to try and bodge with
what we have already, it simply isn't going to work.

At that time, it could have been the most disastrous thing that Canon
could do - many thought that it was a big mistake and consumers would
drift away to Nikon and Pentax and Minolta. Some did.

Years on, the pain of those days has now paid dividends and Canon is
 where it is today.

It's those wanting to use new lenses on old bodies.

Actually, when using a zoom without a constant aperture value, using the
aperture ring is a real pain since the aperture changes as you zoom.

I have to ask, maybe naively, BUT, what is the big deal about the aperture
ring? Exactly what does it add to in regards to camera function, or
more
to the point, what does it take away when it isn't availalble? Is it only
really a problem for those trying to use newer lenses with older bodies?
Or
is there something else in the way that they function that I don't yet
know
 about?
