It's interesting that the usual concept of 'Still Life' involves
inanimate objects, which may be still but are certainly not living.
Your submission fits the literal meaning of still life. :-)

Same here.  All of this discussion reminded me that I have an old (very

Re: I don't understand...

2018-12-20 Thread Brian Walters
It's not just older versions of Lightroom - Google's API change affects any
older software that uses Google Maps as a map interface. My Zoner Photo Studio
17&18 are similarly affected. Fortunately the map interface in the trial version
of Zoner's current offering has been updated to support the new API - so I use
that for geotagging.

G'day all,

A varied gallery with a variety of interpretations. I'd say Dan and Bruce have
the most literal interpretations.

View here:

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

Re: K50 - Aperture Motor Failure?

2018-10-28 Thread Brian Walters
I don't have a K-50 but this problem seems to have been reported for not only
the K-50 but the K-30 as well.

If you Google Pentax Aperture Block failure, there are lots of hits. This
particular link suggested a fix - don't know if it always works but might be
worth a try:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/342828-pentax-k-500-aperture-block-failure-resolved.html

Here's another suggested fix:

Good luck

PESO - Hanging On

2018-10-13 Thread Brian Walters
My wife and I recently did a road trip around New South Wales. One of the places
we visited was Mungo National Park. part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed
Willandra Lakes Region. It's a wondrous place, not just for the spectacular,
eroded landforms - archeological work has established evidence of human
occupation here, dating back at least 40,000 years.

This small tree, clinging to life, deserved a photo:

Sonorous just means giving out or capable of giving out a sound, especially a
deep, resonant sound, as a thing or place:

A photo of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia would fit & doesn't someone from
the
list live in Philadelphia? Maybe the inside of a basketball arena. Those get
pretty "sonorous" when the home team scores.

So do I but I'm sorely tempted to include Sonorous Interiors just to see what

I don't think that's the problem.

The issue is that participation in the PUG has been tending downwards over the
past year or two and the majority of themes haven't been too demanding. I just
have the strong suspicion that a theme like 'Sonorous interiors' will get little
support.

Happy to include it but I'd need some serious encouragement from the list to do
so.

October PUG is UP!

2018-10-05 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all,

Another smallish gallery this month. Some good stuff there. My favs - Don's
'Big Wheel Keep On Turning' - great colour and the boy next to the loco
emphasises the size - and Pete's 'Larry Keeping a Weather Eye' - yes, a cat!,
but forming an almost perfect circle.

View here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

Next up: 'Upon Closer Examination'.

Yeah, that was my feeling as well. I think there was a photo to be had with
that light and that bridge but I think it eluded me.

Ditto but I cope. It's also 32 bit and RAM limited which pretty much eliminates
any possibility of using most modern photo editing programs. The thing is, it's
still going OK so I'm reluctant to update until absolutely necessary (that and
the fact that I have other priorities for spending at present).

Thanks for those comments, Igor

That was a great day we had with you, Jane & Rob - can't believe it was 8 years
ago!

We also have turtles that have to be rescued from roads - not often, fortunately
although with the current very dry conditions we're experiencing it could be
more common this year as they try to find new water holes.

Thanks to everyone else who looked and commented.

I haven't PESOed for quite a while...

Shinglebacks - I love these guys. They are the most endearing creatures but
they have the unfortunate habit of deciding that the warm bitumen of country
roads is a great place to soak up heat - with predictable consequences. I often
stop and move them off to a safer location but they don't always appreciate my
efforts. One or two have even peed on me :-)

Not a great photo but maybe a creature many of you wouldn't have seen before. I

Is Dr Blake still screening in the US? It's been pulled from Australian
channels because of accusations against the main star. A planned telemovie has
also been recast without Craig McLachlan in the lead.

Another old fashioned guy. Zoner Photo Studio does fine as my image manager -
exporting to Photoshop for editing.

Very nicely framed and very spectacular.

Every time Prickly Pear is mentioned it brings to mind the devastation that the
plant caused to farmland in Australia in the early part of the 20th century. It
was introduced here in mid 1800s and at its peak in the late 1920s covered
almost 25 million hectares.

In one of the most spectacular examples of biological control, it was tamed by
millions of larvae of a moth (appropriately named Cactoblastis) which chomped
their way through the prickly pest.

There is even a memorial to the Cactoblastis moth:

Re: PPG

2018-06-19 Thread Brian Walters
Yeah, there's obviously a problem.

Someone on DP Review mentioned failed uploads a few days ago so, even though
it's been several years since I've uploaded anything to PPG - or voted for that
matter - I attempted an upload as a test. It failed. I've just tried again and
it failed again.

Maybe it's a temporary glitch?

June PUG - Last Call

2018-05-31 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

I'll be closing submissions on Sunday evening 3 June, Sydney time.

Theme: Songlines

This is about illustrating a favourite piece of music with a photo.

As a lot of music can be found on line (Youtube etc), it would be interesting to
include the URL of the song (if available) with your submission. To this end
you'll find a few more boxes on the submission form for June only - Song Name,
Song Artist and, optionally, Song URL.

As usual submit here:
